The Art Of Winning A Penalty:

In this guide I'm going to be looking at the art of winning a penalty kick in Football Manager Handheld, there isn't loads to cover but we have a few sections we can look at which could increase our chances, so lets crack on.

What Is A Penalty?

A penalty kick (also known as penalty or spot kick) is a type of direct free kick in association football, taken from 12 yards (approximately 11 metres) out from the goal.

Penalty kicks are performed during normal play. They are awarded when a player commits a foul inside their own penalty area.

The Award Of A Penalty:

A penalty kick may be awarded when a defending player is within the penalty area (commonly known as "the box" or "18 yard box") and commits a foul punishable by a direct free kick against an opponent or commits a handball offence. Note that it is the location of the offence — and not the position of the ball — that defines whether a foul is punishable by a penalty kick or direct free kick, provided the ball is in play. The location where the foul is originally committed determines whether the penalty is awarded.

Translating This Into Football Manager Handheld:

A penalty kick is awarded if a foul takes place inside the penatly area, thinking about this logically you'll come to conclusion that the more players you have in the box the more chances you have of one of your players being brought down.

Getting Men In The Box – Outside Of Strikers:

There are a number of ways to get men into the box on Football Manager, especially if you have some understanding of the in game player roles. So lets have a look at the ones which could help earn your team a penalty.

Box To Box Midfielder:

The non-stop dynamism of the box to box midfielder enables him to contribute greatly to both defending and attacking

As the FMH tactic information states the role involves contributing to the team in both the attacking and defending aspects of the game, this means like the name suggest the player will be working in and around both your box and the oppositions. When the player is on attacking duty he will be adding an extra man into your oppositions box and causing them problems. Which means he'd be an extra man they could potentially foul for a penalty, but remember this role will also mean he'll be operating in your own box so he could end up costing you one.

Advanced Playmaker:

The advanced playmaker aims to drop into the holes between the oppositions midfield and defence, making himself available for team makes passes.

Although this role is more about creating opportunities by abusing the space the player finds he will still often find himself on the edge of the box or inside it on occasions. For example if he had space in front of him he could burst into the box and be brought down.

Inside Forward:

The inside forward aims to cut inside from the flanks and run directly at the centre of the opposition's defence

With the players key goal involving running at defensive minded players in and around the box this role is sure to cause last ditch tackles from defenders. If you play with two wide players set to the inside forward role you have gained an extra two players in the box when you are attacking, add this to a striker and the odd midfielder helping out you're storming the opposition, mistakes are bound to happen.

So I've shown you a few ways to increase your numbers in the box thus increasing your chances of scoring or winning a penalty. Although all of these ideas in one formation sounds unbalanced and unusable but I'd like to point you in the direction of Toms 4-3-2-1 which uses all these roles beautifully.

Penalty Winning Attributes:

Now it's time to look at the attributes which could help win your side a penalty, we've looked at how to add numbers to the box but what skills do these players need to win a spot kick, lets have a look.

Dribbling:

A fairly obvious needed trait if you wish to be brought down in the box, if you can keep the ball under control and glued to your foot the opposition don't have much choice but to time their tackle correctly.

Technique:

Another great way to draw in a tackle is with quick feet and quick ability, look at players like Suarez who dance past the players in the box. A lot of opposition defenders are too scared to challenge a player like this since all it'll take is a quick step over, flick or turn from the attacker and they've conceded a penalty.

Movement:

Movement may seem a less important stat to be needed but it can have its uses since it can stretch play and create space for other members of the team. The opportunity of an eye of an needle through ball could be created by some fine movement resulting in a rash tackle from the defender and a penalty.

Pace:

Without a doubt the most important attribute needed in my opinion, beating a man purely on speed and getting on the wrong side of him is one of the easiest ways to tempt the defender into making a risky challenge. This is even more so important for the wider attacking players since if they manage to beat the full back they are one on one with the central defenders with the attacker running at full speed, it would only take a knock and the referee would be pointing to the spot.

Conclusion On Attributes:

Every attribute is important in this game and many more like strength could also result in a penalty being awarded but if you can find a player with these core stats green they'll be being tripped up game in game out. Now imagine having five players with this attributes assaulting you opponents penalty area? Scary stuff indeed.

The Final Way To Increase Your Chances:

Be Manchester United......Only kidding lads, in all seriousness you have more chances of winning a penalty if your side is simply better than the opposition. A lot is said about United, Chelsea, Liverpool and the rest of the big clubs getting the decisions when they are needed, some times it maybe down to the referee being under pressure and intimidated by the surroundings but most of the time they get the penalty because they are technically better than the opposition. Think about it, if you have a right winger who is incredibly quick and skill full like Valencia running at a mediocre wing back, there is always going to be a chance the wing back will make the mistake and lunge in.

Anyway it's time for me to stop now, hopefully you've enjoyed the read and will continue to win spot kicks  :D.
