Scottish Players For Liverpool FC

Liverpool Football Club have a long history of great Scottish players wearing the famous red with names such as Dalglish, Hansen and Ian St John rolling off the tongue. If I remember correctly Liverpool have not won the league without a Scottish player within the squad but could any currently playing player prove to be the difference? In recent times the club has tried to incorporate Scottish players with signings such as Charlie Adam and Danny Wilson but these players failed to make it at Anfield, could the five players featured below change the fate of the club? Let's check them out.

Ryan Gauld

When talking about Scottish players with potential Ryan Gauld is always going to be apart of the conversation, especially after how good he was on 2014. Since his move to Portugal Vibe has seen less of the creative winger but his stats scream potential quality as at his tender age he already possesses some eye catching stats including 16 creativity, 14 teamwork and solid 13's in dribbling, passing, tackling and movement! His stamina is a worry but intensive training and time should turn this young player into a superstar!

One area in which LFC are currently blessed in game is in the attacking third, especially with wide and central players. With the likes of Lallana, Coutinho, Ibe and Markovic already in the squad Gauld could be seen as a poor signing. However Gauld is younger than the players currently at the club and he could easily replace Lallana in a few seasons once he's passed his best. He wouldn't be a player I'd sign on a day one save unless I had some spare cash to invest in youthful potential but he will struggle to break into the starting line up for a number of season in my opinion, however I currently have no idea what his PA is currently or will be on 2016 so he could well be a better option potentially than anyone already at the club.

Andrew Robertson

In a disappointing season for Hull City the young left back Robertson was one of few highlights as he won over the fans with solid attacking and defence displays. At the age of 20 Robertson is a wash with blues but many of these stats are rather high and it wouldn't take much intensive training to bring the best out of him. It doesn't take much imagination to picture Robertson with greens in crossing, dribbling, tackling, decisions, positioning, teamwork, pace and stamina! What a player he could be and with Hull's relegation he could be a nice and cheap signing from the Championship.

Robertson is a player I always forget I want to try and in my opinion he could be a worthwhile signing for Liverpool in game. On 2015 LFC don't have many options when it comes to the full backs, especially the left hand side as the only natural players they have there are Enrique and Moreno and this seems like it will continues onto 2016 apart from the teenage arrival of Joe Gomes. Personally Enrique is a player that is best off sold and it would make sense to flog him while bringing in Robertson to compete with Moreno for the starting spot, this would also free up Gomes for the versatile John O'Shea role within the squad or a loan move to develop.

Jordan Rhodes

Rhodes' needs no introduction as he's been a fantastic option on FMH for years, I personally think he's one of the best finishers on the game! At the start of a new season the Blackburn man starts with a mouth watering 18 in shooting and solid supporting stats including 15 movement, 18 stamina,16 decisions and remember these will only get better, as will his other stats! He's not the youngest and he can be expensive but from personal experience he's well worth a gamble!

As I said Rhodes is a player I really like in game and I think he would be a good signing, especially on 2015 as he'd be a much better option than Borini, Aspas or Lambert. On 2016 however his signing wouldn't make as much sense as Liverpool have Ings and Origi fighting for the back up of the back up role with Benteke and Sturridge being the first choice. It's also worth noting he's a player that doesn't come cheap from experience.

Gary Mackay-Steven

Gary Mackay-Steven is a player who Liverpool deemed not good enough as they allowed him to leave a few seasons ago, however since then the young attacker has blossomed and is now one of the stars at his latest club Celtic. Looking at his stats it's clear to see this left winger has plenty of potential as he starts off with two solid greens for his position while also having high blues in other needed attributes such as crossing, passing, shooting, movement and pace! With a starting value of just £2 million and with his wages only being £8k he could be a nice little signing for the right club.

Mackay-Stevens faces the same problem that Guald does all be it he's a less reasonable purchase, with his current age he'd be lucky to force the bigger names out of the side even if he does handle intensive training well. Personally I'd agree with the Liverpool of the past and dismiss this Scottish international but I'd keep him in mind if I needed a cheap back up option for rotation. Realistically i couldn't see him getting near the starting eleven, especially as he'd be fighting some of our brightest players like Coutinho and Jordan Ibe.

Grant Hanley

When you're in the market for a young central defender what attributes do you look for? Decent heading, tackling, positioning, leadership and teamwork? In that case Hanley could be a fantastic signing as the centre back from Blackburn has solid greens in these areas apart from positioning, positioning however is an attribute that can be easily trained! In no time at all this Scottish international could be the first name in your defence and a cheapish option to boot with a starting price of just £2.3 million! I've not used him in a while but Hanley used to be a player I picked up often.

Hanley is a player I've used a lot in the past and he always turned out to be a worthwhile purchase and I think he could be a decent option if you're in need of a central defender at Liverpool. The side currently has three "first team" centre backs in Lovren, Sakho and Martin Skrtel with Kolo Toure and Llori waiting in the wings. Llori is apparently the next big thing in his position but Toure will soon need a replacement on 2015 and 2016 so Hanley could well be worth the investment, especially as it should be a reasonable buying price.

That's my look at the five Scottish players with the most potential from my limited knowledge and I hope one of them caught your eye! Thank you for reading and please remember to leave a comment.

Great article and read again! Didn't realise Mackay-Stevens used to play for Liverpool. Robertson has always performed for me when I sign him, as has Ryan Gauld.

Very enjoyable Ashez, a great idea for content.  As you say Liverpool and Scottish players have been entwined in footballing history.

9/10 ,  you would have scored 10 if you mentioned Souness  :-)

Finished reading it, but upvoted it earlier though :P Gotta say amazing work, KIU. Actually I am going to do something similar with Borussia Dortmund once I return haha got the perfect idea for my work, amazing indeed :)

Nice article Ash :)

Gotta say that Hanley or Rhodes would be the two most likely to squeeze their way into a Liverpool starting XI in game. Interesting that they are both Rovers!
