hey my dudes and dudettes,

been away for a while playing anything and everything on my Switch. Love me an eShop sale

Wanted to know if anyone has any experience with FM Touch on the switch? Better experience than on mobile? is it much different?

I originally played the PC version but it came to a point where i needed to see other humans and daylight, so had to put that version of the game aside. I've enjoyed the plug and play nature of FMMobile since.

Can anyone give me details or share experiences of FM Touch on switch?

@Nucleus has like 200 hours on it so I'm sure he can.

Any recommendations @topline?

South Park, Stick of Truth,
Golf Story,
The Way,
My Friend Pedro,
Katana Zero,
Steamworld dig, and heist
lots of Tetris 99
Mario Maker 2
Ultimate alliance 3 (not finished yet)

West of Loathing - On my at right price list
South Park, Stick of Truth - I'm after the sequel as it's physical
Golf Story - Tempted but not sure it's for me
The Way - Completed, absolutely loved it.
My Friend Pedro - Never saw the appeal of this one
Katana Zero - Looks good

Steamworld dig, and heist - Love them both to bits, Dig 2 is ace as well

lots of Tetris 99 - Solid game
Mario Maker 2 - Not for me
Ultimate alliance 3 (not finished yet) - May be eventually

That's the only way I'll buy digital. If you go through this thread around the start of each month you'll see what I've been playing :)

never though id be much of a digital guy but i stumbled across Beatemups on youtube and his 10 eshop games series.

Added them to a watchlist, and waited patiently for sales. needs to be at least 30% off before i'll take the plunge. Physical makes it more fun for me, im old hahaha

Not that keen on Beatemups/Wood, he just irritates me but I watch him occasionally. I like him on Game Chasers but I'm just not keen on his solo content.

I go physical whenever possible, it's just cooler and added protection. Even this week a solid game is being lost digitally.

Physical media all day long for me.

Hopefully! I’ve toyed with getting the classic but can’t justify the amount of room it’ll take, so this is ideal.

Huh? The Snes classic is tiny 😂

Tbf the Snes classic is a wonderful bit of kit, especially once hacked (oddly I'm currently waiting for a part to expand the storage) but I'd personally prefer to play the Switch so I'm hyped for it happening.

Lmao, the Snes classic is just a HDMI cable and an USB charger which I've put in the TV, oh and controls. I know what you're saying though, tbf why spend £90 on a classic if games start appearing on the Switch. I'm sure a few games won't show up on the Switch which are on the classic though (Super Castlevania for example) but if they release 2 a month by the end of the year we'll have more Switch Snes games than the classic has for £20 a year.

A daily reminder that everyone viewing this thread has to play the DQXIs demo! It's bloody awesome which @Nucleuscan confirm and I've just found out it's 10 hours long! You owe it to yourselves to at least try it! @Rob @zaangie @topline

I'll give it a go when I have the time.

What I've Been Playing

August

My update is late and I've not received even one comment asking where it is!! Shocking! Obviously I kid as I've said before I do this for myself and share it as why not. Anyway the reason for it being delayed is because August turned out to be a good yet busy month for me where I got and started a new/second job! It's nothing special but it's night work which I started two weeks ago now after a week of interviews and training so my schedule is a complete mess at the moment. However a new job means more money and potentially more free TV time as the missus works days/evenings which makes me pretty excited, once I settle into a routine anyway. I'm a tight arse by nature so I doubt I'll splurge too much but extra cash is extra cash haha. I think if anything it'll just mean I'm more tempted to pick up games I'm on the fence about as it's less of a risk etc.

Switch

Mario + Rabbids DK Adventure - As explained last month the missus picked up the Gold Edition of Mario + Rabbids which got me the Donkey Kong DLC and I just had to jump head first into it! I absolutely adore the base game as it's one of the best games on the Switch imo and one that I'd recommend everyone should check out, which might make your wonder why I'd not picked up the DLC yet? I wanted it and I debated getting it often but it released when I was balls deep in other games and then the Gold Edition started to get regular Eshop sales which tbh irritated me as the full game + DLC would often be on sale for around £20 but the DLC by itself never went on sale and costs around £15 iirc, I get why they do it but it felt like a slap in the face to those that already spent £43 on the title when it launched. Any time I saw an Unbisoft sale I always checked in hope of a discount on the DLC which never happened, so instead I spent £14 to get another physical copy with the DLC while also planning on selling my original non DLC copy for the same price, so I kind of came out on top lol. Anyway the DLC is excellent but more of the same where I absolutely loved the combat but the over world stuff and especially the block puzzles wore thin, thankfully the combat is that fun I enjoyed the package as a whole. In The Donkey Kong Adventure you only have access to three characters being DK, Rabbid Crankey Kong and Rabbid Peach with the story being about Rabbid Kong and his corrupt bananas/love of Rabbid Peach. Donkey Kong is incredibly over powered however in this mode as his movement and attacks make easy work of most of the enemies which I think does make this adventure easier than the main game. Rabbid Peach functions in the same way as she does in the main campaign while Crankey uses a crossbow, grenades and has access to a powerful ground pound type attack after team jumps. Personally I found the trio a joy to use as they were all unique and allowed for interesting strategies which obviously is the point of the game. I'm also delighted to say that the humour and general charm of the base game is also here as I found myself smiling and even laughing throughout the cut scenes, even without voice acting these rabbids emote so well and are just a joy to see in action, I know I can't believe I just said that either. The adventure is a decent length as it took me around 7-8 hours to beat getting perfect ratings on every course, I have however decided to leave the unlocked challenges for another time as if they're anything like the original games challenges I don't have the patience for them at this current time lol. All in all I had a blast with this DLC and I think it's a series that others need to look into more, I seriously can't wait for a sequel lol.

Mario Tennis Aces Trial - I took advantage of the new Nintendo online service benefit which was a free week of owning Mario Tennis Aces, obviously it would be rude not to try it out especially considering its free and in my case completely free as I only have Nintendo online due to Amazon Prime. Anyway I've played Mario Tennis Aces a few times when it's been released as a demo and every time something just never felt right about the game, I always found it fun but something stopped me wanting to buy it so this new service was win win in my book as a week was plenty of time to fly through the single player campaign, which was the only aspect I really cared about as I've shared my multiplayer views before. So during its week of availability I made the game my focus as I wanted to see what the single player consisted of and in the end it took me around 7 hours to see the credits roll. The story is based around the concept of Wario and Waluigi finding an ancient and cursed tennis racket which corrupts them so you have to defeat them and find the 5 power stones that powers the racket, just your typical goofy Mario stuff tbh. Gameplay wise each area consists of a few tennis matches, some challenges and a boss which when defeated gives you a power stone so you move on to the next area, unfortunately I soon lost interest in some of the challenges however as they just weren't worth my time. The story and the game are basic but the gameplay is incredibly complex as it's almost like a fighting game as you have so many shot options it can get somewhat overwhelming, however the game offers a decent difficulty curve as it's starts really easy but then has some high difficulty spikes. Two tennis matches in particular were absolutely infuriating as the rubber banding was horrendous, you'd be battering them than out of nowhere everything would go their way or they'd get a stupid amount of charge shots and catch up in no time, it turns out these fights in particular are attempting to teach you to focus on breaking rackets and not winning by tennis (not explained in game in the context of these matches). You see you can build up these special shots which are a complete bitch to counter and if you slightly miss timing a return it will hurt your racket which has three lives, if your racket breaks you're KO'd and defeated, so it's advised to use this against the AI in the stupidly BS matches. Boss fights however were pretty cool as instead of basic tennis matches you had a typical boss fight with added tennis mechanics, for example the snow boss throws snow balls at you which you have to return, unfortunately all the bosses are similar but it's a nice change of pace. My only knock against the bosses and challenges is they're time based which is unneeded pressure imo, especially as if you get hit or miss a ball you're penalised by losing time, in some cases this is incredibly annoying but it does really add to the difficulty, I was twice one hit away from defeating the final boss only to run out of time! Anyway I enjoyed playing the game but I'm glad I didn't buy it as I now have no interest in the title, while it's good and incredibly deep I just found the experience too frustrating and too dependant on the irritating special shots, it is basically just a fighting game where you rush to get a special shot and pray you block the opposition's correctly and don't damage you racket or score, admittedly it created some intense matches verse the AI which could be really fun for couch multiplayer but it's just too complicated for the more casuals gamers I'd be playing with. The story mode is basically a long tutorial as the meat of the game is obviously the multiplayer so while I don't think I wasted my time playing through this single player campaign I have absolutely zero interest in picking this title up.

Tetris 99 - Another month and another event as this time I grinded to get the Fire Emblem theme which is pretty neat. Thankfully I performed alot better this time getting some nice finishes including a 12th and a 9th, unfortunately I'm never winning a round though 😂

Demo

Cadence Of Hyrule Demo - I played it once and for only a matter of minutes, god this games mechanics are so hard and confusing, even on the easier mode I struggled to get my head around it as I have absolutely no rhythm. I absolutely intended to return to it and see if I could get good but I never got around to it which gives me a decent amount of buyers remorse for Crypt Of The Necrodancer which is meant to be alot harder.

DQXIs Demo - Reports suggested this demo was 7-10 hours long but I only sunk two hours into this, for what it's worth I absolutely loved what I played but I held off on continuing because I want to play start to finish once the full game is released. The progress does transfer but that's a months wait at the least and I might get to it late due to getting Fire Emblem late. The main reason I wanted to try the demo was to ensure the game runs well which it does so I can't wait to get the full game at the end of September, I've seen a few reports of crashes but I'm confident they'll be patched for the full release. Seriously everyone should try this game!!

Wii

The Conduit - I fancied playing a first person shooter so I looked into the backlog where I came across The Conduit which is a game I'd heard alot about but not played until now, iirc the game was built up as a true and special original shooter on the Wii but it failed to live up to the hype critically, however it did find a decent following in Nintendo circles. Firstly I'll start with the graphics which are really impressive for a Wii game, it really is a good example of what the Wii could do with a decent developer using the software. It also utilises the Wii's unique features excellently as the game is motion controlled in the same way as the Metroid Prime Wii games where you move with the analog stick but you aim with the Wii pointer which is one of the few times I love motion controls, that's not all however as you can also thrust the controller for inputs like throwing a granede or performing a melee attack which just feels awesome, the game really does make the most of the Wii's unique features without making the game a waggle fest like so many other titles. As for the story mode it consist of only nine levels but they're fairly lengthy providing a decent challenge, thankfully you can edit the difficulty at any time and the game features plenty of check points so progress can always be made, I'll happily admit I played on normal until the last two levels where I found the enemies got too bullet spongy so I dropped down to easy, which tbh was too easy but oh well. The story itself is interesting enough but fairly confusing yet pretty typical as it focuses on aliens and corrupt members of government while you play as some soldier who gets caught in the middle of it after acquiring this special technology, unfortunately it's biggest crime is just as it gets interesting you're at the end and it ends on a completely underwhelming and bloody infuriating cliff hanger which makes absolutely no sense! Thankfully the game got a sequel which I don't own as yet but having a game end how this one does simply sucked, I was seriously confused when the credits rolled out the blue. So while the story ended up a massive disappointment in isolation I can't say I regret playing the game as the gameplay is solid and fun, however I do agree with the reviews it got at the time as it is a by the numbers first person shooter that doesn't really stand out from the crowd but the AI is solid, the gameplay is fun, the controls are excellent, the visuals are top draw for the system and it's only really let down by the story's ending imo, now to hunt down the sequel.

GameCube

TLOTRs ROTK - I was having an in-depth discussion with the missus' brother about Tolkien's works which really got me in the mood to jump into Return Of The King on the GameCube, a game I absolutely loved in my youth. Back in the day I completed this game 100% on my PS2 as my best mate and I were absolutely obsessed with it, however all I really remembered about it was it was good but pretty challenging. The game follows the plot of the film of the same name starting with a tutorial at Helms Deep and ending at Mount Doom with Frodo. The game only features 13 levels (+ two bonus ones) but it has decent variety as you play four levels as Gandalf, three as Sam, one as Frodo and five as either Aargon, Legolas or Gimli (I picked Aargon). Granted their attacks are pretty similar but playing all three parts of the story is cool and this game uses a level and upgrade system so if you're so inclined as I was back in the day you can max out all the characters including the unlockable cast members. Level wise the game is pretty straight forward as you travel through levels and complete tasks to progress, with a few boss battles sprinkled in which are pretty decent. Combat is handled by a combo system where you have a block, a fast attack and a heavy attack (used to break shields) with different button combos performing bought/unlocked attacks. I said at the start I remember this game being difficult and that memory came true as I died numerous times during this play through with the last few levels especially being rage inducing as you don't only have to put up with bulky mouso style enemy numbers but also mini bosses and escorting your companions to ensure their survival, it can get very tough but I enjoyed revisiting this game alot, it might not have been as good as my memory led me to believe but it's still a fantastic game. My biggest knock on the game not including the difficulty spikes has to be how dark everything is, granted it helps set the scene well but at times it was a struggle to work out who had shields and to see what race each character was, it's not a major issue but it was one.

Recent Pick Ups

Fire Emblem Three Houses - Switch - £50 - On August the 28th, basically a month after the game released I finally found a bloody copy! I'd spent all month checking site after site, store after store and not finding it until that faithful day where I ventured into a rain storm to claim my treasure! Annoyingly I paid more than I'd have liked (pre order was £40 on Amazon, typically around £43 after) but I just had to have it, especially as it gives me basically a month to smash it out before DQXIs releases. Anyway expect my views on this in the September update. As of September the 3rd I'm only a hour in as I've been so busy though 😭

I did something unusual this month as I picked up three non Nintendo items!

Batman Arkham City - Xbox 360 - £1.50 - Many of you will be aware Arkham City is one of my favourite games, however I recently discovered it was missing from my 360 collection, iirc I lent it a mate years ago who I don't really speak to any more so for the sake of £1.50 I just picked it up again. I have the WiiU version anyway but unfortunately that version needs to be played with the gamepad which I'm not a fan of so I just wanted the original version again, I still live in hope of a Switch port though. The main reason I want a Switch port of the first two Arkham games is for the challenge maps tbh, I've 100%'d both games on the 360 and I have replayed both games story mode a few times but I've got an urge to replay the challenge maps which I'm never going to do again on the 360, however having those portable sounds heavenly lol.

Football Manager Handheld 09 + 12 - PSP - £1.50 - Again I replaced games I discovered were missing in my collection but with these and FMH 2011 I have no idea why I can't find them. My PSP games were split between my mum's and dads so when I couldn't find them when we moved I assumed they were at my dads which I've discovered isn't the case. The reason for wanting the complete set again? Well I'm intending to frame all 8 game boxes and hanging it up in the games room, it might be sad and non Nintendo but FMH and Vibe are important to me so why not, I just need to find a copy of 2011, a frame and bother to do it now lol.

The Direct was okay but alot of repeated information or stuff not really to my tastes, like come on how many team based shooters do we need 😂, it felt like hundreds were announced last night lol. It's the first direct I remember watching where I got the Sony/Xbox E3 feeling I get where everything just looks the same. Thankfully however it was an Nintendo Direct and not E3 so some magic was sprinkled throughout to make it a decent direct.

Recap/My Thoughts On Select Titles

Spoiler

Overwatch - It's neat for those that care but I can't say I do.

Luigi's Mansion 3 - Same as above but I'm not really a fan of the LM series, I love the charm and humour but the slow gameplay doesn't hold my interest, it does look kinda cool though.

Smash - I've been debating getting Smash for a while now but it's a hard game to fit in with all the RPGs about, however Banjo looks absolutely incredible, you can tell how much care went into him. The Terry Bogard announcement however means absolutely nothing to me haha, the reveal that more DLC beyond the originally announced five was exciting though. The Smash roster is absolutely insane. What was odd was during the Banjo showcase after the direct they talked about the best way to play the Banjo series is on the Xbox 360, what a bizarre world we live in!! It hit home how excited a Switch release of Banjo 1+2 would make me lol.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE: Encore - A WiiU port I was hoping for as this game looks wild, extremely Japanese and features Fire Emblem. It's one I looked at repeatedly on the WiiU but I hated that console and didn't want to play it that much so while this game might be too JRPG for me it's one I do want to try.

Snes Online - Oh yes! I expected it and I hoped for it and I popped for the announcement like I did as a child hearing the Stone Cold Steve Austin glass shattering! I love the Snes and the service launching with Super Mario World, Super Metroid and TLOZ ALTTP has me stupidly excited since they're games I have access to hundreds of ways but I see myself using this service alot! I might even order that Snes controller as that's the only way to really experience these games lol. @Rob

Assassins Creed Rogue Collection - Black Flag is the only AC game that ever looked good to me so it now depends what the port is like as the AC 3 port was apparently extremely rough.

Deadly Premonition 1+2 - I know nothing about these games, are they worth looking into? People online seemed hype for Doom 64 - Never played it or a Doom but I know it's meant to be awesome.

Trials of Mana - Looked okay but didn't really scream out to me, unfortunately the only Mana games I've played were the two DS games which are awful.

Return of the Obra Dinn - The gameplay isn't for me but I've heard it's it's excellent but can the visuals are excellent.

Little Town Hero - Obviously as it's made by Gamefreak I was interested but this latest news did nothing for me at all, the battle system looks unique though.

Daemon x Machina - This game is being pushed so hard yet I only see it dying on launch! A bad first demo, iffy looking performance and a release date that is sending it out to die...Yikes.

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast - Never heard of it before.

Devil May Cry 2 - 2 gets shit on alot but I remember liking it, hopefully it's taking us one step closer to a physical trilogy as the Resident Evil games are getting one.

Xenoblade Chronicles - This got me pretty excited, this is a remake of the rare Wii game which I have and I played a few hours of before dropping it for whatever reason, however it's a game I've always wanted to return to and a series I want to invest in so having it playable on a system I want to play is cool. Oddly enough I nearly picked up the 3DS port last week so I'm delighted I decided against it as I'd much rather play it on the Switch.

Pokemon - Not big announcements but I'm still hyped for the game, the teapot got a chuckle from me while I kinda like the new bird/water Pokemon's goofy design.
