Can players be retrained to play a new position even if your assistant recommends against it?

They can yes but it may take longer and there is a risk they won't. Players have hidden attributes such as versatility and normally the assistant judges by this.

As long as they have aptitude to retrain there, it's possible. Though sometimes the player just isn't versatile enough, which makes it really difficult.
