Help How do you "troubleshoot" tactics?

I have been trying long and hard to make my own tactics but I keep failing drastically. One tactic seems to work for one save and in the next save with the same team, it won't work anymore. I have some basic understanding of the roles and stuff and I put great on paper tactics, give time to settle in (2-3 months) but it won't work, even with the big teams.

The problem I am facing is I don't know how to troubleshoot my tactics and by troubleshoot I don't mean test it, I mean once I make a tactic how do I know which role is not suitable or wrong for the given team. I troubleshooted through the post game ratings but they don't seem to help at all. Can anyone help regarding this?

    P TM T

WM    BBM AP    WM

   CD CD CD

      GK

- Attacking
- Direct
- Mixed Passing Focus
- Mixed GK Distribution
- Normal tackling

With Pressing and Counter attack

This tactic worked GREAT for my save with Manchester City save and also when I switched to Liverpool. Worked for both. I know it is not defensively strong but believe it or not I once conceded 15-20 goals one season with Manchester City. I had to replace my phone and lost all the previous data, I reinstall the game with Manchester City with everything like the same and I got sacked first season.

Also what I am looking for is not to perfect one specific tactic, I am trying to learn how to kinda do trace and eliminate troubleshooting with any tactic I want to develop..

P.S: Sorry for no screenshots, as I said I lost all the data on my previous phone.

A 3 at the back is notably harder to get right but you are playing very attacking. No defensive midfielder (use a BWM not a BBM OR DLP not APM) and also a lack of width with two poachers and a TM up front provides no movement. You then use WM which again doesn't provide width they don't go forward. My advice is try a 4 at the back first, these are easier to get right.

TLDR:
You lack a defensive midfielder and have no width.

I don't know how it worked then.. It worked perfectly fine for Man City. I used to player Wingers instead of WM but conceded lots of goals so I though I'd change to WM so they can also be a part of the defense and the central midfielders can be more of an attacking type.

Also can you advise on how to know which roles are not working for a said formation after some analysis.. Oh yeah, the word I was looking for was analyse (not troubleshoot),

You conceded goals as wingers are more attacking and you don't have any defensive midfielders or defence in width. That is why 4 at the back is easier. But then if you pull the wingers back to defensive wingers and play Advanced Forwards not poachers you should be fine. ADFs run into the wings.

To analyse how roles are working you need to know which roles do what. For example no point looking at passing for a BWM.

Do you play same team and same tactics in different version?

Except what Dec mentioned, you also should adjust based on match performance.

For example, if your team got many shots but sccore little, maybe you need change attacking to balance.

Well, not exactly the same team but some players in/out. Like in the first save I was got a good offer for Kompany and sold him and made some replacements. The second time, I wasn't able to get exactly the same offers or players.

Pardon me, but how is that supposed to help? I can't understand the logic.

Playing 'Attacking' will have your players shoot when the chance is there even if the better option is to pass to a teammate.

Playing 'Balanced' your players will look to shoot from better opportunities.

So overall shots maybe less when using a balanced mentality but the chances could come from better scoring opportunities.

I Think what he's saying is the same as Billy2shots has, when you play attacking mentality your players will shoot from everywhere, but a balanced mentality means there looking for the better scoring opportunity, so less shots but more good chances
