Not enough room in squad

I started a new game as Everton. I sold 6 squad players and bought one player. I then had a bid accepted for Dele Alli. He accepted my contract offer but I was told the deal was cancelled because I didn't have enough room in my squad.

 

Does anyone know how this is possible as my squad is much smaller than the one I started with and the deal for Dele Alli included a player exchange!

How many players do Spurs have in their squad when this happens? 40? If so, then this is a known issue (it thinks their squad is too full). If less, can you send a save to help@sega.co.uk for us to have a look at? Thanks.
