In my experience, it's only worth praising players who prefer private feedback. If you praise them privately it almost always improves their morale. It's probably not worth praising them for their form if they are playing terrible or praising them too often, but a bump once a month seems to work for me.

Players who prefer public praise are another thing entirely and I don't have much success with them.

If you're assistant is not sure which approach to take, try private as more players are private than public.
