Career Idol Attempts the UK Challenge Take#2

Recommended Posts

Having fallen at the 3rd hurdle on my first attempt by the finest of margins, I'm going again! Going back to my old haunts of Northern Ireland I decided to ignore current strikers and pick the biggest rep club in NI, Linfield. Trawling through the epic list of choices (maybe 2 pages?) I found a little gem. Alex Nimely. I'd tried to sign him last time around for Crusaders but he wasn't for dancing. I figured I'd try again, and he signed on the dotted line!

Stats on Signing -

After Some Training -

2 Points on all his physicals and a jump in his Attacking stats too, he looks like a good league 1/2 striker now, which should easily be good enough for the Danske league.

The season went fairly well, we won the league, we won the 2 big cups and lost the 2 little cups, which is odd but I guess that's how it goes, and we lost out in the opening round of the Euro qualifiers, although they'd already played the first leg before I joined so I can't take all the blame for that!

59102acf8e194_S1_Summary1.thumb.png.0be327e3cd5fb0a8442226c7e84f892d.png

And Alex did fairly well. Not Kyle Vassell well but pretty well.

So, 63 Goals in the bag. Now for the 4 seasons of rep building and trying to beat it!

However, Alex Nimely spat his dummy out at the end of the year. Capture.thumb.PNG.6886f2e245edc907a8ad506c39d2d083.PNG

Wrecked his career?! Screw you Alex! So, S2 would start with a different striker (well, nearly start, Alex has played a little bit)

Wow, that's a fantastic number @Idol well done, good luck waiting for the next 5 seasons for a Scotland job, get a INT job, that usually ups your Reputations, I find that you have to be a National Coach before someone in Scotland will come knocking, good luck mate

Cheers @Cockers2505 & @BatiGoal, it feels a bit low compared to the 72 I got last time but the more I try the better it seems!

Season 2 - Out with the Old, In with the New

As an NI team the easiest way to buy people is basically to steal them from other NI league teams! I trawled through and came up with 2 options, Daniel Hughes and Andrew Mitchell, one of whom was out for a month which made it a pretty easy choice!

Here he is before I signed him.

5911bf03aebed_Mitchell_at_Dungannon1.thumb.png.7b02208decfc7aac3251dd7d5f125df8.png

And here he is after his massive pay rise and a bit of training. Those extra 2 points on all his physicals make him look pretty good imo. 5911bf0b5f818_Mitchell_at_Linfield1.thumb.png.2a9793e0f572bd18546686d52470d002.png

The season went pretty well, despite getting utterly hammered by Rosenborg in the first CL prelim. 3 Cups, 92 Points and 81 GF in the league is respectable.

5911bf1072890_Linfield_S21.thumb.png.232bc95d43ea15a9f27081b61bb170a6.png

And the main man? He did well but not quite well enough to beat Nimely.

5911bf148ec5a_Mitchell_End_of_Season1.thumb.png.428b466178fa1229fe9cfc791fc5ae97.png

He did miss the first league game and both the games against Rosenborg because Nimely hadn't decided to leave until into August, so it could have been a few more but who knows.

Season 3 - Slackers Gonna Slack

Not a lot to show in this one, I stuck with Mitchell and he started slacking early in the season. He was still playing well but just didn't score with any consistency. We only lost 2 domestic games all season, sadly one was a final (0-0 and lost on penalties). We banged in 86 league goals despite Mitchell misfiring and racked up 99 points, which felt a bit of a shame. The CL ended early, having drawn Celtic in the first knockout round we absolutely battered them and lost on away goals some terrible finishing. Using the xG formula drawn up by @veerus I was on 6.3 vs Celtic's 2.1 so it was a bit unfortunate!

And the main man, Andrew Mitchell, was a Slacker. I hate that little message 'Slacking'. I really struggled all season to get any sort of form as if he played a couple of full 90 minutes and scored some goals he'd just go back to Slacking and then give a couple of 6 ratings.

5911c316af9bd_S3_Mitchell_EoS1.thumb.png.88d747631ebcaf65dbcdbf72f561089c.png

44 Goals isn't a bad return but it's nowhere near where he needs to be. I was really undecided as to whether or not I should buy a new striker or give him another season. In the end I decided to be honest there wasn't a lot of alternatives out there so I'd give him another run. I suspected I'd end up 5 seasons in NI like last time so I'd have one final run at a big number if S4 ended up being a write off.

Just read through all the updates, must say mate you have done really well! I attempted this a while ago and only managed 48 goals, so for you to hit that number is incredible. Will follow this with intres, good luck mate!

Glad to see you're using it!  In my test runs of Man United vs Leicester, the biggest xG blow-out was 6.495 vs 0.320 and the match ended in a narrow 3-2 win for United.  I also had a 4.10 vs 0.32 match which ended 0-0.  These things don't happen often but when they do, they're frustrating... and realistic!

I sometimes think that if someone was playing Manchester United's 2016-17 season in FM, they'd probably quit in frustration by now.

@veerus Yeah, I don't know how accurate it is realistically, as you can poke a lot of holes in it compared to IRL xG but it provides a nice way of quantifying those unlucky results.

@Taff & @BatiGoal Cheers guys, I'm dreading going back to Wales, definitely going to take my time in Scotland this time and pick a decent Welsh team.

Season 4

Season 4 was rubbish. I decided to give Andrew Mitchell another bash since he was reaching his peak and I hoped he might put some bloody effort in. I was wrong.

One bright moment was that we finally qualified for the Euros group, even managing a win against AZ. Breel Embolo at Gelsenkirchen did score 6 goals against me however, he's a bit too good for the NI league!

5914439d86ba1_S4_Euros1.thumb.png.df32387067ed3340264c0dc2abe77286.png

We won the league easily enough, but only managed to pick up 1 Cup after a run of bad form dumped me out of the 2 early season cups.

5914439836d9c_S4_Summary1.thumb.png.5e40574e5ceccb231b61a7687d415197.png

And the main man, Andrew Mitchell? Well... He played some football...

591443a4c70e1_Andrew_Mitchell_S41.thumb.png.b84f0824907e4516239ef28c5e99089d.png

A steadily diminishing return in goals, assists and average led me to the conclusion that he was ready for the scrapheap. His stats hadn't moved in the last few years but his effort levels clearly had. I think if I had to do this again I'd be tempted to run a different striker every year just to avoid this happening...

Anyway, I've had worse years but I've had far better. Moving swiftly on.

Season 5

Having shopped and shopped and failed to buy anyone decent I decided to go back to the player I'd turned down for Mitchell 3 seasons ago. I'd seen several people use him on the NI leg and pick up over 50 goals so I knew he could do the business. I'd started the season with another player who's name escapes me but after he'd played like a one-legged man and got me knocked out of the Euros I decided Hughes was the man for me! Especially after we'd had a little windfall in the summer.

Windfall.thumb.PNG.d1da09c64fa33067fc4c732cf0161f55.PNG

Hughes has decent stats after a bit of training, I always like to see 3 greens in Shooting Movement and Pace, he might not be great in the air but he should find space.

591446994ff84_Hughes_after_Training1.thumb.png.be94c3c4d409cbe3b0bd41258c898800.png

He struggled a little early on in the season settling into the team, but still scored well... Until!

All in all, it was a good season for Linfield. We won the league... in mid February!

591446ab3d3a4_FebLeague.thumb.PNG.873ec73256dc46d42f42656a0947c9ab.PNG

We went through the entire league season undefeated, although again we had a really odd dip in form which led to us losing out on 2 cups (back to back games!). We picked up a nice round 100 points in the league, having scored a last minute equaliser in the final game. I would have been really narked if we'd lost the last game to lose our invincible tag and finish short of 100 points!

Alex Hunter was an absolutely glorious grey player I'd signed up and near-instantly became my #1 Keeper. He even has the Pace to play my preferred Sweeper Keeper role. Technique of 19 as well! I was genuinely tempted to get him taking my Free Kicks.

Hughes had a good season scoring at a goal a game, I think if it wasn't for the injury he might have hit the 60 mark but I doubt he'd have beaten Nimely or at least not by much.

Goals at 2.08 p/g, conceding at a decent rate of 0.61 p/g despite playing an attacking formation which I'm pretty pleased with. However my reputation was still Regional which I put down to the fact that I'd failed to get anywhere in the CL whereas last time I'd been in the group stages 2 times iirc and maybe once in the Euros too.

However I decided to take the plunge. 5 Seasons in NI is enough but there's definitely some trepidation there. Will I be able to get a job in Scotland or will I have to go back to Ireland to build rep??

Resignation.thumb.PNG.e00f1bbcc47677ea4e165546c78edc18.PNG

Interestingly the man who was likely to succeed me in the 'Linfield Manager' already? First time I clicked on his name he was Linfield manager then next time he was unemployed. Very odd. I think the job went to Eddie Hill in the end anyway so god knows what was going on there.

Now's your time to get that job in the SPL and spank that one to give you a little extra time in Wales if needed

currently playing with Tranmere in League 2 trying to get my rep up as no one above league 2 would have me after my time in Wales

Good luck dude

Stage 2 - Scotland - We Stand Aloan

S6 Mid-Way Updated

Given my worry about getting a job at all in Scotland I obviously applied to all the jobs going. Thankfully one of the newly promoted clubs saw my potential and ability! Or possibly they saw that I'd work for free? 5914669794e5a_Hamilton_Job1.thumb.png.5ca417478c3337d6de3170f2ba88762f.png

Hol-y Shit. I'm supposed to compete in the SPL with a budget significantly smaller than the budget I had in Northern Ireland? To add to the difficulty I'd missed out on the major freebie splurge in June.

To make matters even more interesting I looked at the squad. We had 3 players. £4.6k of a £9.25k (increased to £10k when I targeted mid-table) on 3 players?!

59146715e3b06_Francomb1.thumb.png.955ed4e80741cc0522589b40584aebeb.png

The culprit! £3k a week on a mid-rate right winger. Considering the only other outfield player we had on the books was also a right winger and that Francomb was looking to move onto bigger things I didn't have much alternative but to offer him out, eventually landing £75k for him.

I had absolutely no idea what to do here except to dig for freebies and sign some loan players. I'd picked up 3 loan players and all of one freebie when I popped over to the league rules to see how many loan players I was allowed and I saw 3 words which quickened my pulse.

591467e966c0b_SPLRules.PNG.defc8c4872ecc84226964573b6a3f48a.PNG

Let's have a look at my transfers! Dong-Won Kasperczyk the Englishman is my favourite. Love Multiculturalism!

59146b2d09aeb_TransfersP1.thumb.PNG.eba387e0bca4ca6db98f1468e66cb82a.PNG59146b329dd18_TransfersP2.thumb.PNG.806c5eb9aa1875f5273cb8b58493935f.PNG59146b35d65ca_TransfersP3.thumb.PNG.29309f10161ebebc2c73f7a82b7451e5.PNG

And some of them are absolutely world class, I've picked out a few favourites just because it's been so long since I've played with decent footballers!

Spoiler

59146c9dd93e5_Bammou_AMC1.thumb.png.e2ea0d6ccd35bc998a1b41b457dc7f94.png 59146ca4aa6d1_Granqvist_CF1.thumb.png.15a0daa1cb63f2f50a2f80433b617432.png59146cac907cb_Lucchesi_DC1.thumb.png.1803b0194623da8ecdbf95aa8cfe7d8f.png

Any my absolute favourite player right now. He was worth £1.2m when I signed him on loan. He's now worth £4.8m despite being paid £550pw! I haven't got a clue why he's playing for Hamilton Academicals but just wow. 59146cf8264f0_Autret_FL_Jan1.thumb.png.6e502b333a4427968b6168d41fbec9db.png

The only issue I was left with was that Grandqvist is a Regen so I wasn't allowed to just utterly smash the record with his majestic pace and finishing so I had to go shopping. I started out thinking I could probably get a decent striker. After that had been destroyed I went looking for ok strikers. That was clearly too ambitious so I went back to Linfield to see if I could pick up one of my failed strikers over there. No luck! Either Linfield wouldn't sell or they wouldn't join. Having got to the very bottom of the strikers list I ended up signing an ex-Linfield striker after all, Paul Smyth. He is Bad, no other way of looking at it.

So, apologies for the mid-season updated which is longer than my normal 2 season updates but I think I got excited!

Just caught up pal, well done on getting to Scotland! Some very good signings in there, and I really like your Update style. Paul Smyth wasn't too bad for me when I attempted this challenge, hope he does well for you. KIU!

Cheers @mcandrew003 , I suspect you might have used him in NI where he's not too bad, he lacks a bit for Scotland.

Season 6

Should be a quick update just to bring us up to date. Paul Smyth struggled for about half the season with 'Unhappy with Training' until I eventually worked out (**cou-googled-gh**) how to fix it (put to a very low training regime until happy then he apparently doesn't mind full training again). As such he spent most of the season with low morale and stats which are worse than shown below.

591572d984c4d_Smyth_Stats1.thumb.png.9ac99f18ab7270838815c851486f5d18.png

And to be honest he's not that good even at his peak!

We clocked up 2nd in the League, a long way behind Celtic but a long way ahead of Rangers. A good solid haul of goals and not too bad in defence but Celtic racked up a lot of points.

591572c9878ec_League_Standings1.thumb.png.7670872664675774b79c4eae470dee2e.png

And we won the Betfred Cup which was a nice bonus. We beat Rangers in the final of the Betfred and lost to Rangers in the final of the Scottish Cup. 591572a817066_S6_EoS_Summary1.thumb.png.ea2f54bdef70f9973df7f40cf3f650d9.png

All in all, a pretty good season. How did Smyth do?

591572d1157b3_Smyth_EoS_S61.thumb.png.ad3b4cd4d26ce807b3b4120d3230915f.png

Not completely rubbish but not far off to be honest! He picked up in form a bit when I sorted out his unhappiness but it was too little too late. He'd also missed a couple of weeks with an injury. I was planning on spending 2 seasons in Scotland so I'm not too fussed about not making the target but it does add a bit of pressure to the next season.

A couple of interesting things did happen this season!

I got drawn against the team I was battling for the title with, I won! Apparently this was a shock.

CelticCupWin.thumb.PNG.722b55e86699ee9d0d820566fcee6295.PNG

My transfer budget went up a significant %, quality.

59157503c9a56_LoanRules.thumb.PNG.4f064f63bb79c7a9da7b522336bb8d0f.PNG

And apparently there had been loan restrictions before? Because I'd really been struggling! ;)

Aythami Salvador was an utterly quality DLP who sadly suffered with chronic injuries, he played 30 games and bagged 10 goals and 9 assists and had an average rating somewhere around 7.8 having come on loan from Sporting Gijon.

Thankfully for season 7 my wage budget tripled and I had a bit of a transfer budget, add to the fact that I sold Paul Smyth for £950k and I had no more excuses!

A quick season this as the bug really had me bitten and it was a slow day at work.

The Main Man

He looks good. Really good. Check out that wage too! Unlimited riches! I really don't know which way to go with this update to make it interesting so I guess I'll just go from the start to the finish?

19 Games In

Paul Smyth's record? 28 Goals?

24 Games In

Scottish Record? 37 Goals? Pah!

Yep, 57 goals in 40 games. Pretty good. He'd missed game 33 with a suspension from Yellow Cards (although looking at it now he didn't get a yc in game 32 so god knows how that works) and then missed game 40 with...

Injury.thumb.png.2dc5bb85375e0a6c250c9c79bb15d099.png

ARRGHH. He was on a 70/80 season and now, less so.

On the way back from injury he decided to ask for a better contract... On the plus side it was on the same day as we won the league!

I can't really argue with him wanting a better contract tbq, but clear he wasn't getting it from me!

He slowly struggled back from injury, playing maybe half an hour of the next 5 games.

5915c1121f6a7_PoleonLastGames.thumb.png.69d7be1c25cc2812fea992d4100a1add.png

But he did finish strongly with a good hat trick against Celtic as I rubbed their noses in their 2nd place.

5915c12d593bc_ScrewYouCeltic.thumb.png.f1918a9d9776aaed9405c5ed546ac6e7.png

So, as I'm pretty sure you can guess he did pretty well!

So did the rest of the team, although we didn't pick up either of the cups, losing out to Rangers in the Betfred Final (they got their vengeance!) and to Hearts in a replayed QF while my main man was out injured.

Season 8? - What a Mistake-a to make

Those that read my first attempt at this will know that I decided to not bother with any of the smaller clubs and just wait until one of the big 3 clubs became available. Sadly I am an idiot. Riding the crest of a big 63 in Scotland I thought 'how hard can it be, Taff did it with Llandudno for god's sake with a striker who was useless'.

@Taff I honestly don't know how you did it.

Anyway... Season 1 in Wales. The club were Carmarthen, one of the smallest teams in the league. To be honest I thought they had no players when I joined but apparently they had a £300 wage bill so they must have had someone.

After he'd been sent off in the first match of the season (after scoring in fairness) I realised he had the mental status of 'Highly Strung'. I wasn't quite sure what this would translate into but I didn't think it would be good! He did pretty well for the first half of the season... Then.

His End of Season form was suitably sparkling.

591ac90f55964_AFInihEOSStats.thumb.png.20a8020097015ddaa2712784ef743fed.png

And he ended the season with a 36 goal haul. We won the league with ease despite having a back 4 entirely consisting of signed up grey players.

591ac919a654d_ADLeagueTable.thumb.png.043f4d0f1dc854b77f1fefedfd65b047.png

And we won the Nathaniel MG Cup as well, making it a successful season for the team.591ac905bf5f6_AHEoSHistory.thumb.png.a0caec22a5171f33f29b3fe18d67029a.png

My manager stats were still relatively sky high, Continental Rep and 26th Manager Rank. 591ac90b3a286_AGEoSManagerStats.thumb.png.711618e343497a96a88035da9c927850.png

So I moved into Season 9 still holding onto some confidence. I'd spotted a name I recognised on the free transfers and signed up ex Morecambe striker Jack Redshaw.

Some sparkling mid season form left him sat on 37 goals from 26 games, needing 11 more goals from the last 15 games. Surely this would be a doddle. A walk in the park. So simple. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha.

There was no change of tactic, no change of personnel behind him, his stats dropped a little but really nothing changed.

It's been a few days since this happened as I had to let it process. In my many many seasons in Wales that was the first time I'd felt any confidence I was going to complete this stage and it just stuttered and died and I couldn't do a bastard thing. We won the league blah blah blah.

And here's how he looked at the end of the season.

unlucky dude, but keep the confidence I know you can do it

It's tough to have any confidence at this stage but the team is slowly getting to the stage where I should be able to totally dominate the league which will hopefully make it easier.

@BatiGoal @mcandrew003 @Eogtuc0910 Cheers for the support guys. I hate Wales.

Season 10

I decided to stick with Redshaw for another season, then he started the season like he ended the last one so I decided to try someone else. Injury made me turn back to Redshaw and he all of a sudden turned it back on. Sadly he'd missed a bit too much of the season to really have a great run at the target but he did OK. Carmarthen were getting better and better but attracting players is still a massive issue. I think if the 'interested' button was fixed this challenge would be a lot easier.

He still looked pretty good for a 35 year old!

591c2defcdfd7_RedshawStats.thumb.png.9bb6ab55e7b1262354cd83b8088018de.png

We won the league easily.591c2de9d71f8_S10LeagueTable.thumb.png.dd80456bf7066859765c6b01ab44f65c.png

However we made a right mess of the cups. Also apparently Wales had moved up in the co-efficients enough to get us straight into the 2nd qualifying round, which was irritating because I scored a few goals in those first round games! 591c2de31b81c_S10Summary.thumb.png.59931e37619008fd641d37d59c566bcd.png

He did alright, nearly scoring at a goal a game and getting his rating up towards the 8 mark. But nowhere near 48.591c2dddf2e97_RedshawEoS10.thumb.png.d95f1297f76b6e24eab799241c367501.png

Season 11

Redshaw was getting on a bit at this point so I decided to try with someone new. I went back to basics and picked someone with awesome physicals. Shooting of 13 and a bit of aerial ability as well looked good. His major problem looked like it would be his Movement but I hoped his Pace might make up for it.

591c2dd8a8ed3_PhillipsStats.thumb.png.fbf232389d6c4ecc5f6eaa9f68ae48f2.png

We just about edged the league, only winning by 29 points.

591c2dd21db4a_S11LeagueTable.thumb.png.6c9029bc7d81d5ec897e8e0011d2487b.png

And won one cup, the Welsh cup still eludes me this save though.591c2dcc0cd27_S11Summary.thumb.png.670eef484af1100ff29857f59f875057.png

And the main man, well... He wasn't very good. He didn't managed to score a hat trick all season and while he scored in a lot of games, braces were quite rare.

591c2dc5ac533_PhillipsEoS11.thumb.png.93c8f679d474ee1cf7e1266b94999521.png

34 goals and even further from the target than Redshaw was... Maybe I'd be able to find a good striker for next season from the 14 options I get when I search for interested strikers.

Spoiler

No. No I can't.

Unlucky dude keep plugging away, take the interested filter off, it's trash I never have it on in any save! What's your highest wage you can offer?

I use it initially then take it off, it's the hours I then have to spend trawling through hundreds of players who are utterly uninterested I don't like! I started the season on about £1,200 to a free transfer, I sold a player to boost it up a bit, which got me to £1,400 but still players aren't interested.

I can't really work out how to play more attack minded while maintaining my goal % with my main striker. I think the fact that I concede so few goals in Wales is more to do with the fact that the opposition are terrible. The only thing I've done before is pushing my FBs into WB to make a 2-2-2-3-1 but it's hard to find players who can actually do that who are willing to play in Wales.

@mcandrew003@Taff @Eogtuc0910 Cheers for the support peeps, it's really frustrating.

The season after the next one I spent a lot of time in pre-season shopping and offered contracts to about 100 strikers, literally none of them who were better than what I had were interested.

My three most frustrating picks -

591d57da49838_James_Wilson1.thumb.png.ff01b98462a6ba31253d6ff55c7ad986.png

James Wilson, ex Man U. I offered him £1,400 a week and he turned around and went to HALESOWEN. Where the actual mansfield is Halesowen?

591d57df08b92_Andrew_wtf_Mitchell1.thumb.png.f8f571e72ec852847a8f45dcad90c00a.png

Andrew Mitchell, £275 a week at Linfield. I thought maybe he'd manage one final hurrah in the Welsh league. £3.1k a week? Are you having a laugh?

591d57d035ac0_Chuba_Akpom1.thumb.png.76e80f2fe2c0a1616e36a16c7e7f7807.png591d57d4c50d7_Chuba_Akpom_21.thumb.png.da86b1808b177eef310380a502e33423.png

What a player, he would have walked this challenge. £575 a week at Wingate. and. Finchley.

https://sortitoutsi.net/football-manager-2017/league/130672/dafabet-welsh-premier-league - Carmarthen rep 1400

https://sortitoutsi.net/football-manager-2017/league/5103714/english-isthmian-league-premier-division - Wingate and Finchley rep 1600.

The Welsh league is equivalent to tier 8 English football, it's no surprise I can't sign anyone.

Okay, what I would do is interested off, Max wage set to 500pw and only bid for players in more obscure league or lower division cause the higher division players expect the world and then some
