Massive season that mate on both fronts! Armstrong still impressing but I hope you can tempt him back down to the lower leagues!

Update - Season 8 - AFC Wimbledon

Sorry for the long break between updates. Not getting much free time lately...

When I last posted an update, I'd successfully gotten Bolton back into the Premiership and was anxiously waiting for a second chance job to become available. I'd started to sweat a bit, when in mid July an opening came up:
secondchance-season08-04.png.19692f15ba528a8541e9d20acc875156.png

With only 12 second chance teams left and none of the other managers in danger, I jumped at this chance. Hello AFC Wimbledon!

Targets

Here are the targets I set myself:
  • Win the league with AFC Wimbledon
  • Sign Armstrong and get him to score 100 goals!
Could this be the year Armstrong hits 100? Fingers crossed!

Transfers

Once again, the team I left somehow decided to buy a bunch of players from my new team for £150M. Those unexpected funds allowed me to buy Adam Armstrong (he cost £26M this time!) and a bunch of other good players (though I tried to find very good players that were bargains).

Here are our transfers out:

I had a few player exchanges to second chance teams, but not as many as in the past.

Coming in were a whole new team, with many of them being players I'd worked with before. Some came directly from Bolton (Armstrong, Seabra, Sampaoli, Borre, Keane, Bruma, Walker-Peters, Mings, Leali, Arkenberg, Romero). Some had moved on to other clubs since I'd managed them (Palmer-Brown, Carabali, Lima da Silva, Lucioni, Heintz, Wisdom). All top players and mostly fantastic bargains! There were a bunch of other good players coming in. And a gaggle of goalkeepers joined us in January...

Charity

Once again, I did all the usual things:
  • Exchanging players with second chance teams (but once again, not many takers).
  • Finding clubs standing between second chance teams and promotion/safety and buying all their goalkeepers.
  • Throwing games.
There's probably no point focusing on this any further, it's the same old same old by now.

Job Opportunities

Athletico Bilbao (with £46M) and Southampton tapped me up, but I'm not going anywhere!

Results

We were good in the League this year, but not in the cups...

We won the League comfortably:
secondchance-season08-75a.png.8d789c5c52790c6f867a87e1a8b78e1d.png

We won the Checkatrade Trophy 3-0 over Sheffield Wednesday.
secondchance-season08-57.png.3623c99342662f565f8afd24d008639f.png

We started off looking pretty good in the League Cup, with a highlight being 4-1 win over Newcastle, with Armstrong scoring 4 against his hometown club. Epic!
secondchance-season08-22.png.5a4255f22538d8e4bc29338b18b3bb83.png

But we failed at the Quarter Final stage, where Stoke beat us on penalties.
secondchance-season08-29.png.4e826bc6b050cfd1157ae3fba68a60b7.png

If only Armstrong's goal hadn't been disallowed, if only Soyuncu (my former Bolton player) hadn't scored 5 minutes into stoppage time, if only Success (my former Bradford City player) hadn't scored the decisive penalty in the shootout.
secondchance-season08-30.png.1bd0147b412f637a1e50d7e2ab64728c.png

And we were bundled out of the FA Cup in the 3rd round by Liverpool, who beat us 2-1.
secondchance-season08-42.png.03275f03e213c2e9f058baea8ade2b8c.png

An acceptable season, but not glory covered like some years have been.

Accidental Armstrong 1KC

Armstrong had a couple of minor injuries this year, first missing two games in September after being removed from training as a precaution, then missing 3 games after being injured in January.
secondchance-season08-11.png.2b6504b6fe41a006b4d3788d15f104e5.png
secondchance-season08-40.png.e8d05f009d055711ff74be09d52c6a10.png

He got off to a reasonable start to the season, but hit awesome form in October / November to finish with 61 goals in 32 games by New Year's Eve:
secondchance-season08-21.png.8a5aa00df27f95330e9b8a8f3193e482.png

The second half of the season had a pretty slow start with that injury, but he kept up a decent pace once he was back:
secondchance-season08-53.png.18f59409b2aa519ef41321433daa578d.png

He finally broke through the 4 goal barrier, scoring 6 against Billericay and 5 against Chesterfield:

secondchance-season08-35.png.02e285a95a85f31ddf2d535f47dd4918.png

So, did Armstrong make it to 100 goals? Well, he was on 97 goals with one game to go. He needed a hat-trick in the final game against Fleetwood. Here's how it panned out:
secondchance-season08-62.png.6e8b13c9e825ac83e0ab8dd00d66e3a2.png

Oh so close! He scored two and had the crucial third goal disallowed. He ended up scoring 99 goals in 56 games and now has 538 goals total under my management.
secondchance-season08-67.png.8c98535ce51bf498f6540f90c43c2c08.png

He's 27 and is probably only 5 or 6 seasons away from 1000, so looking good! I still want him to break that 100 barrier. I know he can do it, in League 1 at least. He would have done it this year if not for the 5 games out injured, but that's football.

League Tables

Here's the top and bottom of all the English leagues:

Man Utd won the Premier League (again), so no bonus points (again). Man City were the closest past winners (again), but they were 23 points behind.

In the Championship, 2 second chance teams (Barnsley and Ipswich) were promoted, while none were relegated.

In League 1, AFC Wimbledon, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton all went up. At the other end, we lost a dismal Blackpool down to League 2 (and Sheffield United only escaped on the last weekend).

That leaves us with 10 teams left to go. Steady upwards momentum, so I have to be happy, but it's a shame that we have a second chance team back down in League 2 for the first time in years. I was hoping we'd left League 2 behind us... Still, I'm wondering what sort of damage Armstrong might be able to do down there!

Go for the Blackpool job, 2 years and you can leave them  in the championship, 200 goals for AA in that time would be a huge leap forward on both fronts! Keep it up buddy!

Thanks! Yeah, if it becomes available, I'll almost certainly take it! But the Blackpool manager is only rated as Insecure, so I'm expecting he will hand on to it...

99 , man that's even prettier than 100 I think :) It sounds better but I'm sure you'd disagree hehe!

With only 10 remaining and Blackpool all the way down in League 2 this'll be over in probably another 8 seasons :D

Haha, I'd take an ugly number like  113 over 99. ?

Update - Season 9 - AFC Wimbledon

Last season, AFC Wimbledon destroyed League 1. This year they are in the Championship and eying promotion to the Premier League. Meanwhile, Armstrong is at 538 goals and is powering towards 1K.

Targets

Here are the targets I set myself:
  • Win the league with AFC Wimbledon
  • Armstrong to score 80 goals

I set Armstrong a target of 100 in League 1, but better bring it down a bit now we're a level higher.

The board expect us to battle bravely against relegation:
secondchance-season09-01.png.cf7461aae69cbadca593bdf5a320d181.png

I told them "Shove that, we're going to win it!":
secondchance-season09-03.png.6375556ea27c6b717408f8a0c66d71f1.png

Notice the difference in wage budget? Yep a £2.5M difference per week. That's £125M over a year. Why would I tell them we'd be struggling when I could access that?

Transfers

Here are our transfers out:
Spoiler

secondchance-season09-44.png.34c910c24aa55524be4494e115ec26cf.png

I had to sell a few fringe players to keep the squad relatively happy. I couldn't get them to second chance teams, but some needed to go to whomever would take them. Once again, the number of player exchanges was lower than in the past, but I still passed on as many as I could. At least one of them was directly responsible for crossing a second chance team off the list, but more on that later.

Here our transfers in:
Spoiler

secondchance-season09-48.png.8acdd57c23e6bdc57e784bafd354b81d.png

You'll see a lot of £12M signings, sometimes with an exchange, sometimes not. I basically decided to pass on some cash to these second chance teams, to hopefully allow them to buy better players. Doesn't really work, but if they aren't going to take my exchange players, I'll give it a try. There's also a bunch of very good free agents. The rest? They're all goalkeepers that joined in January...

Charity

Once again, I did all the usual things:
  • Exchanging players with second chance teams (once again, not many takers).
  • Finding clubs standing between second chance teams and promotion/safety and buying all their goalkeepers.
  • Throwing games.
One thing that annoyed me a lot was other teams buying stars from the second chance teams. I always outbid them, but once you cancel a transfer once, the player won't sign with you next time. So quite a few were lost (especially from Portsmouth who lost 3 top players and were left with not much).

Job Opportunities

The Blackpool job became available soon after the transfer window shut at the start of the season. I thought about it, but it was too far out to assume AFC Wimbledon would be able to make it through to promotion and it would have messed up the 1KC attempt.

Stoke, Villarreal (with £55M), Athletic Bilbao (with £41M), Vigo all wanted me, but I didn't answer the door when they came round.

At one point this year I was back to World Class and ranked number 2 manager, but then I slipped to National and unranked. I finished the season at Continental and about 19th.

Results

We won the League comfortably:
secondchance-season09-table.png.8447a1a25f9f4101aee239c013770861.png

In the League Cup, we progressed through to the Quarter Final, where Newcastle beat us 5-2, paying us back for knocking them out with a 4-1 win last year:
secondchance-season09-16.png.fd4a3176ec6fcafd108055d3fa1c5e27.png

In the FA Cup, we beat Liverpool 1-0 (revenge for them knocking us out last year), Newcastle 3-1 (why are we always drawn against Liverpool or Newcastle?), Cardiff 2-0 on the way to the Semi Final, where we drew Championship rivals QPR. We beat them 2-0, setting up a final against Tottenham, which we won 3-0:
secondchance-season09-36.png.e4a369d4d2dbce68640bb8b61af42dee.png

It was great to win a cup again after being knocked out early of both of them last year.

Accidental Armstrong 1KC

Here's what Armstrong looks like these days:
secondchance-season09-37.png.3589e70d677f1e4140afd55864fe3416.png

He scored 5 goals against Wolves (who are in the Premier League).
secondchance-season09-07.png.b9ebefc84e4e6cb3477d64363c41f7a3.png

He also scored 4 a few other times (we tried to throw the Swindon game, but they didn't want it):

secondchance-season09-19.png.ef9050d0d2799ceaed78c0ee0b30c12a.png

Here's a game where he could have had 5, but 2 were disallowed. He must have had at least 20 goals disallowed this year.
secondchance-season09-18.png.742e744beb20c9c542bff8550cae3656.png

He was out for a couple of games after being injured in training. Thank goodness those clever physios noticed his bruised head before it developed into a case of exploding head or something.
secondchance-season09-25.png.c7bb50d8f0c9ac4a2551210752c9baf0.png

Armstrong ended up scoring 88 goals in 56 games and now has 626 goals total under my management.
secondchance-season09-39.png.40d58230c62136a1e2ee563011e0049e.png

He's 28, so the clock is ticking, but if he keeps scoring at this rate he'll make it with plenty to spare.

You'd think that with that many goals, even at a lower level, he'd at least get a sniff of an England call up. But Southgate doesn't fancy him and it looks like he's in the job for a while yet. England didn't make it out of the group stages at the Euros, so he was Insecure for a month or two, but the FA love him so hard that they were never going to sack him...

League Tables

Chelsea won the Premier League, so no bonus points. Man City keep letting me down.

In the Championship, 3 second chance teams (AFC Wimbledon, Swindon and Wigan) were promoted and get crossed off. At the other end Portsmouth was relegated. Here's some highlights of the final day action:
Spoiler

Wigan's promotion came after a 120th minute goal in the Playoff Final. The scorer of all their goals? Daniel Giggs, who I sent to them on exchange. :D
secondchance-season09-34.png.d06fb1ca9443d7fc6f7317e11d54a207.png

Portsmouth lost on the final day, but it was always going to be a difficult match for them (away to a better team). Earlier in the season, we tried to throw a game to them, only to have Romero and Wisdom score for us after we'd given up. If Portsmouth had won that, they would have stayed up... :'(
secondchance-season09-29.png.72dd95deb8f2b688d41489c911d57248.png

In League 1, Birmingham were promoted (after winning on the last day), but Sheffield United just missed out on the playoffs (after losing on the last day). No second chance teams were relegated.

In League 2, Blackpool bounced back, winning the league and getting promotion back to League 1, meaning League 2 is clear of second chance teams again.

Down to 7 second chance teams left! But none of those are particularly strong, whereas in previous seasons there were good teams who just missed out on promotion. I'm expecting it to be tougher from here on in.

So, a great season! But now, we need to pack our bags again and find a new home. There are only 7 to pick from and none of those have managers under threat at the season close, so we'll have to see what happens.

Battle bravely against relegation?! Ha! Only 7 teams to go and, if everything goes perfectly, you could get this done in three seasons... That'd be amazing. In fact, the race is on to see whether you'll finish the second chances challenge or the 1k first!

Well, the next season didn't start perfectly, that's for sure. Or ... maybe it did!

No second chance teams were available, so I did something drastic that I thought would mean less progress on the second chances challenge - but then I found a loophole I might be able to exploit... Interesting times!

Thanks mate! This season is looking interesting.

Crushing the 1KC, going to blow right past 100 this year. I'll have make this just for fun rather than for the leaderboard, as I'm pushing the limits a bit too much (moving around teams and transferring a fortune with me).

Not so great with the second chances part, but slowly shaping those remaining teams. At one point there were several relegations on the cards and no promotions looking likely, but I'm slowly shifting that needle.

Technically you haven't broken any rules of the 1KC so it's still remarkably eligible for the leaderboard :P

Hmm, I think it shouldn't be allowed. Buying a bunch of players at £150M each from the club you are about to move to is not realistic and creates an unfair advantage over everyone who's doing it properly. For example (spoilers for current season, not that anyone will care!):

Spoiler

Armstrong has scored 49 goals from 19 games so far this season, playing with a Champions League level team in the Conference North.

If everyone follows what I'm doing this season, then basically we'll all be hitting 2K or higher. That will ruin it. I vote that we add a rule that over-inflated transfers from a club you're currently managing to a club you will be managing is not allowed for a 1KC attempt.

cc @danovic78 @Ashez @BatiGoal and anyone else (you too Sam!) - thoughts?

Mate @scratch99 why worry now, we have all been following this and commenting and at NO stage has anybody pointed out that this looks illegal on the 1K rule, maybe what you need to do is look at how your a genius for thinking it up maybe an others are attempting the same, there are RULES set out in each and every Challenge and if the Creator agrees there is no wrong doing, then I say go for it and set an all time record, it's then up to the rest of the Vibe community to either stare with admiration on your achievement, or simply say to themselves well done Scratch, either way it's your achievement and so far we have all enjoyed the story so far, (except me as Oldham still in 1st Division!!!!)

Keep it up, I'm certainly jealous I couldn't get them numbers in my own Challenges (y) regardless of the Division you are managing ;)

Thanks mate. I appreciate what you're saying, but I guess I'm suggesting that the rules should be changed on this one - which is why I pinged people to see if they agree. I was just pushing the boundaries a bit, but this season I went way through them and I think it's too much! I think I'd like the 1KC better if this wasn't allowed. ?

Don't worry about Oldham - they'll be back in the Premier League sooner or later! I'm thinking about leaving them to last, so you won't have to witness me pulling them apart to transfer all the monies to the next club! ?

Ah @scratch99, i think i'm with @Cockers2505 on this one. You haven't broken any rules, you've just discovered a crazy way of exploiting transfers. I hope FMM2018 will fix the "bug" but for this game I think it has to stand...

Thanks for your support, but as I said to @Cockers2505 I actually think it's a bad thing.

Even if they fix the bug that lets you transfer more than you have, there'd be nothing stopping me from starting with Barcelona and legitimately building up £600M (like I did this time), then transferring all of that to a Conference team and get 150 goals a season.

If everyone thinks there's no need for a rule about this, fair enough, but it's been bugging me. I don't want to accidentally ruin this challenge!

Note, this is not really about whether I'm doing the wrong thing or if my result should be included or not, but more about what's the right thing for the challenge.

It's great that you're being so humble and honest with this and if it really bugs you I'm sure you could ask @danovic78 to not add you to the leaderboard.

But I agree with everyone that this is a genius move and you have found a way to exploit the game, I agree it's not realistic but then again neither is the EME so I wouldn't feel too bad

But the final decision has to lie with you

Thanks mate, I really appreciate all the support. I guess I'll sleep on it - it's midnight here! ?

Interested in anyone else's opinions. Thanks!

Sorry, can't allow it! It's clearly stated in the 1 KC rules that you are NOT allowed to score more than BatiGoal's striker. You need to stay under 1091 gls. Thank you.

Hmm, I think it shouldn't be allowed. Buying a bunch of players at £150M each from the club you are about to move to is not realistic and creates an unfair advantage over everyone who's doing it properly. For example (spoilers for current season, not that anyone will care!):

  Reveal hidden contents

Armstrong has scored 49 goals from 19 games so far this season, playing with a Champions League level team in the Conference North.

If everyone follows what I'm doing this season, then basically we'll all be hitting 2K or higher. That will ruin it. I vote that we add a rule that over-inflated transfers from a club you're currently managing to a club you will be managing is not allowed for a 1KC attempt.

While it's not a trend I'd like to see followed it is all legit so it is eligible if you'd want it counted. Part of me thinks this stuff is scary and game breaking while at the same time it's smart playing and just exploiting the system. I suppose it depends if you see this as cheating? I don't think you can as everything you've done took time, effort and clever thinking. Yet by saying it's legit it does open the door for similar saves to operate in the "grey area". In fairness I have no idea haha. I get every point of view mentioned here haha.

If he gets to 1000 goals without breaking any of the rules mentioned in the challenge then surely that's the matter closed there? As simple is at sounds it's a clever yet perfectly legal way to complete the challenge.

Haha, I've been following this rule so far! I hobbled Armstrong in my first 1KC so he wouldn't pass Villalibre, I abandoned PinaColada when it was clear I'd have two strikers passing him, and now I'm trying to get the rules changed to disqualify this career! :P

Thanks for the perspective. I'm a bit torn too. I set out to see how far I could push the game, so I don't feel bad about what I'm doing and it's not breaking the rules for the challenge. But I wouldn't want to see this become common....

@samhardy @Cockers2505 @Mr.Manager @Taff @BatiGoal @Ashez

Thanks everyone for your input and support! As I said to Ashez above: I set out to see how far I could push the game, so I don't feel bad about what I'm doing and it's not breaking the rules of the challenge that I can see... But I wouldn't want to see this become a common approach for the 1KC.

So, after thinking about it, here's what I'm going to do:

I'll keep on with this career and see how far I can take him, but at the end of the day, I won't put him forward for the leaderboard. If others start doing the same thing and putting their players forward, fair enough! In that case, I might add him to the leaderboard later. But I don't want to be the first one to do it! ?

Hope that makes sense and thanks a lot for helping me think this through! I appreciate that a LOT.

PS This also helps be keep to BG's golden rule above! LOL!!
