Career When In Rome - A Racing Roma Career

I've been a fan of S.S. Lazio for a long time now, but after several saves with my main Roman club, I've decided to take a slightly different approach. This time, I will be taking charge of Serie C side Racing Roma, who were only founded back in 2013. My plan is to guide this team, who to be honest is not the strongest of sides, up to the Serie A alongside their neighbours Lazio and Roma, aiming to win the league and possibly even claim the Champions League - although that seems unlikely.

The board's expectation of me is to stay clear of relegation and I've been given a quite comfortable transfer budget of £525k to make a few additions to the team, although I feel a huge shift in both backroom and first team squad personnel. My wage budget is £28k, with the current bill standing at £17k.

I plan to do an update at the end of pre-season, after I've made all my main signings and tested a few tactics in my pre-season fixtures. This next update will be a full feature, including my best signings, star players and an overview of my tactic and my reasoning behind it!

If anybody has any suggestions for signings for Italy's lowest league, let me know, I'm open to any positions as my team doesn't quite have the quality required to get promoted just yet.

Funny you should pick this club. I came across them the other day and did a few test saves with them with the idea of possibly doing a future career with them as well. Looking forward to seeing how you bring them to the top and rival their big brothers. Goodluck!

End of Pre-Season Update

Pre-season is over, and this update begins on my first official game in charge. We had two friendly matches, both of which were highly successful: the new tactic (which I will share later in this post) is working a dream and the boys are high on confidence heading into the first game of the season. Incidentally, this first match is against our local rivals in the league, Lupa Roma, who are, on paper, a far better team. Hopefully pre-season is a sign of things to come and we will grab all three points here in the Cup.

Screenshot_20170731-214622.thumb.png.c6d4217dceb22b51f1c468525c39f34c.png

In terms of transfers, we brought in five players and sold none, sending five boys out on loan. Our top transfer was the £400k Filippo Perucchini, a goalkeeper from Bologna. The other two players of note here are Mattia Montini, a striker who cost us £50k from Bari and Luca Ceccarelli, a versatile right-back and right-mid who cost us just £30k after a prolonged transfer saga. Riccardo Lanzotti is a young keeper who we will look to use in the future and Nicolas Claveria is an ex-AC Milan winger who has the potential to grow into a decent player.

The Tactic

The formation I am planning to use is a 4-4-1-1 due to it's basic nature and an overload of full-backs, CM's and wide midfielders who can fill in for a number of roles. With just a few strikers at the club, I opted for a single-striker formation, with Majtan certainly a great player to spearhead the attack.

597fa01712234_Screenshot_20170731-214856(1).thumb.png.9e510abdf6252e9c774fd324c44b8d9e.png

When it comes to player roles, these are the ones I have chosen, and I'm going to give some justification as to why. I've opted for the use of wide-midfielders and wing-backs, as wingers would get in the way of the wing-backs, whom are some of the strongest individual players in the squad. I've chosen a normal CM and a deep-lying playmaker in the middle to hold and reinforce a solid midfield, yet providing options to link defensive situations into exciting attacks. An advanced playmaker is sitting just behind my striker to provide assists that the wide-midfielders may not. Finally, I chose an advanced forward because many of the strongest players in my squad are strikers, and therefore they need to be a complete package in front of goal.

Screenshot_20170731-214901.thumb.png.b881d2574a17421353ecc1816287c596.png

Here are the Team Instructions that I have chosen to use. I like to play attacking football, especially in Italy where a lot of teams opt to choose 3-at-the-back formations that can be caught out with wide play and consistent attacks. A direct passing style is best for a team who probably cannot string together short passes too easily. I have chosen to use pressing yet am thinking of switching it off when my team are in a comfortable 2 goal or more lead.

Players to Watch

3. Filippo Perucchini

Screenshot_20170731-214927.thumb.png.f8252bc66fa3f5ae5968e2d65c0e903d.png

Perucchini is the keeper who I used a hefty chunk of my transfer budget to sign from Bologna. He isn't the best keeper in the world but is better than my existing keeper and was one of the best options on the market. I will most likely look to improve on him for next season but he'll do the job that I signed him for this time round.

2. Giovanni Caldore

Screenshot_20170731-214934.thumb.png.90374a78c01233533eaede4e14167f3a.png

Giovanni Caldore was one of the best players at the club when I joined, which is saying something. He doesn't have outstanding attributes but he isn't bad, especially compared to the rest of my team. He has some good physical and technical attributes for his position, and his mentals are not too bad either. I expect him to play a big part in our season.

1. Tomas Majtan

Screenshot_20170731-214941.thumb.png.3d389d9d0d91fbae213a070347d01c82.png

The top player to watch, in my opinion, is Tomas Majtan. This Slovakian striker is set to lead my front line for most of the season and he has extremely good stamina, meaning he can be a regular starter throughout the year. His technical attributes are good for a striker and his mentals are pretty nice too. The 5 positioning is a bit of a let down but his 15 movement makes up for it. He was a vital part of pre-season and I hope that he can contribute a lot to the regular season too.

The Derby

Screenshot_20170731-215403.thumb.png.9942b8c3457af45eca863350fa5f1771.png

I just had to share this result as it was my first of the season and really shows my statement of intent. I thought my world was crashing down when Lupa Roma, our rivals (and for the purpose of this season, our fiercest rivals at that), were 2-0 up by the 13th minute. Advanced playmaker Luca Ricciardi pulled one back in the 31st minute. By the 63rd, I had subbed on Mattia Montini, the striker who we signed from Bari for £50k, and he equalised making it 2-2. Montini scored his second by the 70th to pull us into the lead and by the 73rd, Ricciardi added to his tally to make it 4-2. An impressive comeback against our rivals in the cup puts us in a great position for this season ahead.

The next update will be coming at the end of this first season where I will cover what happened over my first year in charge.

I'm wondering how many Roman teams there actually are. No lack of derby games for you, but great start!

There are certainly a few that I can think of. In real life, now that Racing Roma have been relegated to Serie D, there are only Lazio, Roma and Lupa Roma in the top 3 flights in Italy. There are a few amateur teams dotted about the city too though!

End of Season Update

As you can see from the league table below, we fought to a valiant fourth place, earning ourselves a place in the playoffs. Although, nine teams from each division qualify for the playoffs so it is not really saying much. I am impressed with the team's performance and I can't help but feel we would've been right up challenging for the title if it wasn't for two injury problems we suffered to our star players about two thirds of the way through the season.

Screenshot_20170801-031436.thumb.png.89c68cbf9c7d51071e7a7e75bd16e703.png

The first round of the playoffs was a home clash against ninth-placed Giana Erminio. We didn't really dominate the game but the opposition suffered two injuries at a pivotal point and Mattia Montini scored a first half brace to sink the opposition. This is another example of Montini and Ricciardi linking up (who became my main striker and playmaker duo over the season - and incidentally the same two who got injured for a month or so at an important time).

Screenshot_20170801-032055.thumb.png.17e4cc5dba8160d28181d11dfdd55c72.png

The first leg of the second round saw us travel to Ancona where, despite the home side outplaying us, we managed to steal a 2-2 draw.

Screenshot_20170801-032815.thumb.png.116eb69f2aa2a3eecb1e2a6c1fa7aed0.png

The second leg was a closer fought affair, with two early goals putting my Racing Roma side seemingly in a great position to win the game. However, a 30th minute Ancona goal and an 89th minute equaliser looked to be taking it to extra-time. However, main man Mattia Montini popped up and scored a 93rd minute header to grant us the victory and move us through into the quarter final.

Screenshot_20170801-033352.thumb.png.e7eb71e99e7abcd81b400600e6fa611f.png

I can't help but feel we were given a great opportunity to knock a much better Lecce side out of the playoffs here. They had a player sent-off in the first minute but unfortunately we couldn't make the most of the chance and they even managed to score a single goal to put them in a prime position for the second leg.

Screenshot_20170801-033840.thumb.png.f3783f3d51abca4c7d325db7c4c4fe8f.png

Despite playing much better in the second leg, we just couldn't do enough and unfortunately have been knocked out in the quarter final of the Serie C playoffs. I was disappointed but couldn't help but think how well my team did, given our expectation to battle bravely against relegation.

3 Stars of the Season

3 Stars

My star player, and player of the season, ended up being Mattia Montini: the striker I brought in for just £50k from Bari. His value has shot up to an impressive £1.1m over the season and he managed to score 39 goals in 42 games, with a further 10 assists. He will definitely be a key player in my side next season, as we push for the league title, so I need to make sure I retain him.

2 Stars

My second-best player of the season was a man who was already at my club when I became manager. Luca Ricciardi fitted perfectly into the advanced playmaker role in my tactic and picked up 18 goals and 22 assists in 46 games. Ricciardi, alongside Montini, missed a month or so of games when he got injured, costing us a run of momentum we were building up in the league.

1 Star

My young player of the season does not have extraordinary attributes but at just 20 years old, formed a vital part of my central defence. I will definitely keep Giura in my plans for next season but I'd like to improve on my defence greatly over the summer transfer window, as I can't help but feel a weakness at the back cost us promotion last season.Screenshot_20170801-034447.thumb.png.8548f86d7f23ec710f25a66bd64be89f.pngScreenshot_20170801-034453.thumb.png.2abe1584aa284d50d134f13eb1631eb7.png

Awards

As you can see Montini cruised to the position of top goalscorer in my league, destroying defences all year long and converting 28 league goals.

Screenshot_20170801-034511.thumb.png.d2a6a75fb0ec237eb45c08584fa10bf4.png

Because of this, he managed to be announced as Serie C/A Player of the Year, with my attacking midfielder Luca Ricciardi announced as runner up. This was an impressive 1-2 for my star players and here's hoping that they can continue their good urn of form into next season.

Screenshot_20170801-034614.thumb.png.f986e55053d2aebdd83a1a50a3180cf1.png

Individually, I managed to be awarded runner up in the race for Serie C/A Manager of the Year, which, for this stage, is an impressive recognition of the work I did from taking the team, who finished bottom of the league in real life, to fourth place.

Looking Forward...

For my second season, I have told the board that I expect to at least make the playoffs. I have been given nearly a million pounds to improve the side and will be looking to do a total renovation of the side, getting rid of a lot of deadwood and bringing in some top quality transfers to really challenge for the title. I have already let go of four players on free-transfers and had two top quality players graduate from the youth academy. The next update will come at the end of pre-season, where I will give an overview of transfers and any tweaks I make to the tactic before the new season.

Depends how long I dedicate to it. In one sitting I'd say 3-5 hours too, depending on the division - obviously seasons with less games take less time!

I just look at regens forever. I spend 2-3 hours in pre-season looking at probably every regen in the game. Don't know why, but I love doing it.
