Career Climbing on the Shoulders of Giants - An FMM18 Career

Part 1 - Renewal

"Slaven Bilic has been sacked as manager of West Ham United after-", clicks the radio as I finish the last touches on my tactical presentation.  In 3 days' time,  I'm about to embark on an epic up-and-down journey through the country, ready to find my footing and begin my climb up the ranks of football management.

Have I got everything ready? Likely.  I certainly have my tactical notes and copies of Sir Alex Ferguson's biographies together in my messenger's pouch along with copious notes gleaned from watching all five divisions of English football last season. Let's see, where might I be headed? Let's find out soon - and let's see if this apprenticeship interview at Prenton Park goes well!

Gonna pop down to the laundry while I wait for emails....

Part 3 - My First Job

"Hi John,  this is Andy Pryce. I was originally going to email you to let you know we were accepting your application to be Academy Apprentice Coach here at AFC Telford United, but we've recently received news that our First Team Manager Rob Edwards has just accepted an offer to join the Aston Villa academy set-up.  With this said, would you accept a revised offer to become Manager here at Telford?

Yours,  Andy."

-> And there we go. I'd mainly applied for academy positions knowing I'd need to earn some experience first but I've been thrown into the deep end almost immediately. That being said, I'm writing this on the train towards Shrewsbury, where I'll be meeting the Telford board to sign the contracts and head to the stadium to be presented!

Part 4 - Getting Down to Business

Staff Overview

Walking into Telford I realized the training ground was incredible - miles better than anything in the Conference and something that would rival clubs in the lower half of the CHAMPIONSHIP.  With that in mind I decided to make some calls and bring in a few friends to join the coaching staff,as seen below.

2017_11_12_04_32_58.thumb.png.ccac2f93fca24dd9793336fc4904ab3e.png

-> Yes, that's the Neville brothers having been convinced by a young buck fresh off his UEFA B badges to join him as part of the coaching staff, along with Mike Phelan. Don't worry though - apparently the Nevilles were pushed out of the Salford City train by Peter Lim after some power struggle or something.

CLUB OVERVIEW

2017_11_12_02_24_26.thumb.png.455de9002f9ac753a7da2d1fa22b46ca.png

-> The two things that worried me the most taking over were the fact that I had next to no depth on the left side and that the players were disloyal - though we can always change it.

Transfers

2017_11_12_04_26_59.thumb.png.474eb0e4f3f87538bb11450379189e47.png

- The transfers were mainly aimed at getting the squad younger and adding depth on the left side, which was accomplished with flying colors.  Gavin Cowan got salty about getting pushed out of the coaching staff and was sold to set an example.

Pre-Season and Preparations

2017_11_12_04_27_09.thumb.png.03544fe24c7b126ec80e8a49897fe0e4.png

- A great win against Cheltenham and a creditable 2-1 loss to Northampton marked a fine preseason more meant to get the youngsters into the groove of things.

2017_11_12_04_27_28.thumb.png.a0a1bfc29cd66382281d77fe404dcd2a.png

-> Our transfer business heavily improved the overall balance of the squad and now we're looking good to at worst get into the Top 7

Next time, I'll be talking about the first month of the season and invite you into the engine room to see the tactic board! See you all next time!

2017_11_12_12_19_28.thumb.png.ea57b3a76aa2ee2b7301a49756c38b4c.png

- A battling performance nicks the 3 points on opening day against a York side that really shouldn't be in Conference North.

Matchday 2 - at the New Bucks Head

2017_11_12_12_19_42.thumb.png.b1c5cb23749dd9430a96d28915213aa5.png

- We begin our home campaign with a dominant 2-1 win against a caged Brackley team.

Matchday 3 - at the NBH

2017_11_12_12_19_55.thumb.png.1ed9d274475e60649381ba70e0bb217d.png

- The Jordan Murphy show in full effect as a late attacking surge turned a cagey affair against Salford into a procession.

Matchday 4 - at the Tameside

2017_11_12_12_20_07.thumb.png.0b2a4340f9b3bca4893b065af64fc7d1.png

- A poor draw here as we fail to close out the game and allow Curzon Ashton to nick a point at the death.

Matchday 5 - at Blackwell Meadows

2017_11_12_12_20_20.thumb.png.c7967c6142aeaefc017b2952bec07671.png

Matchday 6 - at the NBH

2017_11_12_12_20_31.thumb.png.9171d23f5d5ce5b4e9dedf7cccac6742.png

Matchday 7 - at the Windmill Ground

2017_11_12_12_20_48.thumb.png.93b5a90b8e953f2e6f27da05ace1510a.png

- Boy, whatever powder we were unable to fire off against BPA was used to great effect here in Whitnash! Fair-play to Leamington for pulling to within 1 but they were just in too deep.

Part 6 - In Which We Make a March to Wembley

It's our look back at September but before that,  Jacob Murphy everyone!

SIXTY-SIX SECONDS WITH JACOB MURPHY

AFCT media: Hi Jacob, how's the start to the season treated you so far?

JM: it's been awesome so far,  and I'm really enjoying getting a shot at playing time.

TM: You currently lead the Conference North scoring charts with 9, and word on social media is you could match last season's Golden Boot-winning number(Danny Rowe's 47 for AFC Fylde). What do you have to say?

JM: i'm not thinking about it to be honest. I just want to get out there and see the match sheet at the end of the day saying that Telford win.

TM: Is there a secret to your start?

JM: It's been the service definitely - Danny(Galbraith) has been pinging the balls in well and if it's not me scoring it's the others all going into the box, so it's allowed me less pressure and more holes with a stretched defense.

TM: One last question - your deal's up at the end of the season. Would you stay?

JM: Yes, definitely.

TM: Thank you for taking the time to speak with us Jacob, and have a great day!

JM: Thank you as well.

Matchday 8 - at the NBH

2017_11_13_02_27_49.thumb.png.a51b4f4041a5887f3a97832029c3be39.png

- A batting performance from Blyth Spartans ends up for naught as Telford nick the win late on.

Matchday 9 - at Liberty Way

2017_11_13_02_28_09.thumb.png.6c9b34e6553bec77086a22cb6ef0fa30.png

- Wasteful finishing punishes us here as a defensively disciplined Nuneaton squad bag the points in the Midlands.

Matchday 10 - at the NBH

2017_11_13_02_28_20.thumb.png.f3c3908a002eadcd987fbed8075412ee.png

- Another slow start sees Harrogate lead early but get swept away late by a rampaging Telford attack in the second half.

Matchday 11 - at the NBH

2017_11_13_02_28_31.thumb.png.b24598405201ec3463f83bbf86ee7842.png

- A firecracker of a first half petered out into a listless 4-2 victory over a Stockport side that ended up sacking Jim Gannon afterward.

Matchday 12 - at Victory Park

2017_11_13_02_28_42.thumb.png.867e7659b810c780dd1ddc8af495a52e.png

- Definitely a point gained as Chorley were unlucky to have been beat for our equalizer and we were equally poor in attack.

FA Cup 4th Qualifiying Round at Kirby Road, Barwell

2017_11_13_02_28_53.thumb.png.5f18e86034889b870878e0e55bc55221.png

- Your typical early-round pasting of a midtable side in Level 8 sees us drawn against Kidderminster in the next round.

2017_11_13_02_27_33.thumb.png.b32456a6070823caf3cefbdf3576a3fc.png

- A pair of big wins sees us lead the table on goal difference and head-to-head from Darlington, though the top 4 are breathing down our necks.

Join us next time as we cover October!

They were down here the other weekend to play Hereford and got beat 1-0, but there was only roughly 30 fans through the station so it wasn't too bad, but if they draw Sunderland in the next round I'm plastering @samhardy's picture all over the station

Yeah, we had a fair few police about here as Telford have been known to stop. But there was trouble with Aldershot who we were playing anyway haha, I think that was same weekend anyway.

That's the one thing I hate working for the Railway is Football days, don't get me wrong 90% of fans a great, bit loud but generally good, but you always get those who want to fight because you support someone else and I don't get the mentality, I've been to plenty of Rugby games (as a Welshman it's like going to Church) and your not segregated and there is never any trouble everyone gets on, but football is murder.

Remember a few years back Hereford had a friendly with Birmingham and all the police were like oh it's only a friendly wont get many, 600/700 fans later and they had to call police in from 2 other counties to help out.  And they all came back and the police only deal with the first train load the rest we are left to fend for ourselves

2017_11_19_18_38_18.thumb.png.5dce29563068a4177508c3cd005454f0.png

- It's a pretty typical lower-level 4-4-2 with my personal preference for mixed passing and working through-balls combined with biting tackles.

Matchday 13 - at the NBH

2017_11_19_18_33_37.thumb.png.d58d6e0291c2170fdfed8f6ac3657d56.png

Part 9 - Football Festivus

Welcome back to Telford! It's Boxing Day and I'm sat with an eggnog in hand wishing the fans a happy holiday season.I trust you've had your festive feast and thank you for joining us at the game earlier.  That being said, let's talk about the last couple of months and get ready for the New Year!

- The mid-season signings were mainly a case of deck-chairs being arranged,  with Truro and Dartford chucking cash at our strikers and us reinforcing via bringing in a pair of young talents and a experienced EFL League 2 striker in Paddy Hoban. It is worth noting that Matthew Barnes-Homer's £55,000 fee sets a new transfer record for us here at AFC Telford.

2017_11_21_03_40_12.thumb.png.f7c15682f371e603c14869be996cc40b.png

- We knew what we were getting with the former Mansfield striker - enough punch to get his goals on while knocking balls down for Jordan Murphy,  and so far he hasn't disappointed.

2017_11_21_03_39_40.thumb.png.c9e3ca0bb6c1990651aedfba82452af0.png

- The Fil-German winger brings a bit of Germanic efficiency and continental flair to our midfield, and a sprinkle of international experience having been capped by the Philippines.

2017_11_21_03_39_52.thumb.png.f52121f9517dd311cbc3c9ea4c08cd06.png

- The prime catch of the incomings,  and a player I'd love to strike a deal with Rostock for.  The Fil-German midfielder is a wonderful player and at 19 has the world at his feet.

Matchday 18 - at Broadhurst Park

2017_11_21_03_36_14.thumb.png.c750d242544d7a7ff85804f8c6b2c4ac.png

- A frustrating beginning to November as wasteful finishing see us drop points in Manchester.

Matchday 19 - at the NBH

2017_11_21_03_36_26.thumb.png.cee7953f5555db32bb0b760d90329f6e.png

FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round - at the NBH

Matchday 21 - at the NBH

2017_11_21_03_37_35.thumb.png.f238db1160422d50a7442b8f8b9d4c2b.png

Matchday 22 -  at St.James Park, Brackley

2017_11_21_03_37_47.thumb.png.17536434a33bf2b85b98a2473a8ad4df.png

Matchday 23 - at the NBH

2017_11_21_03_38_00.thumb.png.29fb8390bf3189506f7c154da38e93f3.png

;)Nice work with the simple balance 442! And the defense seems good with just 27GA.

 In my saves, I always lost 1-3 goals per game, no matter how better my defenders are or set a DM, and I never set them to push upfront. My defense settings never seem to be solid.

Thanks man! At this level overcomplicating things is just suicide lol

In terms of the defense I actually do set them sometimes to press all over which kind of works but if they get beat it's a guaranteed goal for them!

Matchday 25 - at the NBH

2017_11_22_15_47_59.thumb.png.7b3de43e7f09294c51b10e20e60eceaa.png

Matchday 27 - at the NBH

2017_11_22_15_48_47.thumb.png.efbddbf24b3c45e7a906675cb1afe5d7.png

- Three wins on the spin now as a Nuneaton side in the relegation mire is dismissed.

Matchday 28 - at Wetherby Road

2017_11_22_15_48_58.thumb.png.8baa39cc3a925f8dd02aae50b7f2f616.png

- Sadly the clock strikes twelve on our Cinderella run here as the Merseysiders just have too much firepower here, turning us over 5-1 to dump us out in the Fourth Round.
