Season 8

Form was quite patchy this season, knocked out Champs League in quarters, scraped wins on pens in Betfred Cup and Club World Cup. Overall plenty more silverware.

The season started with a friendly in our new stadium.

Super Cup win.

Scraped a win on pens.

Ditto!

Got schooled by Dybala in both legs here.

Nice finish to the season but no goals for Chuba.

Goal Count

Chuba played in 53 of our 60 games, which considering this injury i was very pleased with. Our physios must have done a good job as he was back within 6 weeks and it landed nicely with an international break.

His goal return was still excellent as it took him a while to get back into the swing of things. He's 29 now so i hope he can keep this rate going for a few more seasons, having used him in the past i know he can play at this level until he is mid-30's.

Season 9

Brief update.

Nearly a clean sweep, gutted to lose that Champions League final in extra time, especially after being 2-0 up.  Anyone who manages to consistently win that competition i take my hat off to you!

Goal Count

Chuba managed to play in 58 of our 60 games so happy with that, goal return not as great as recent seasons but still in the 80's so not complaining. I found myself tinkering with my tactics when he went a few games without scoring and ended reverting to my original tactic anyway so that maybe cost me some goals. He is now 30 years old but i hope another 3 seasons should see us home.

Season 10

Fantastic season, nearly 100% record in the league and finally another Champs League win!

Chuba always shows up in the big games.

Goal Count

He played in 59 of our 60 games which is fantastic going, helps that he never gets an international call up from England or Nigeria. I knew from previous experience he has a good injury record and holds his fitness well and this just shows it.

79 goals for the season which is a bit of a dip but nothing to be be too concerned about. It seems his assists increased so that is something i need to keep an eye on, i don't want him to start turning into provider rather than goalscorer!

Season 11

Lost Super Cup late on, tends to be a theme to me losing late goals but as this is a goals challenge i try and keep attacking rather than try to close out games.

He loves playing against Barca.

But then bad news straight after this game, this ended up ruling him out until January after the Winter break.

Cup final without Chuba, went to extra time but then won emphatically!

World Club Cup win.

Again late goals in the second leg knocked us out, in complete control until 85th minute.

My turn for late goals, 3 in the last 8 minutes including 2 own goals!

Goal Count

First of all due to that injury Chuba only played in 51 of our 62 games this season, however his strike rate was still very good and he ended the season on fire.

He has now signed a contract until his retirement in 2032 so 4 more seasons which gives us plenty of time, and his stats are holding up pretty well.

All in he ended up on 69 goals for the season which i am happy about considering the games he played. Even though he is getting older i'm still confident of getting 80+ goals out of him if i can keep him on the pitch. If so i may hit our target next season but more likely the season after.

Season 12

Clean sweep this season!

Goal Count

Although it was a great season for the team there was a dip in goals from Chuba. He still managed to play in 57 of our 60 games but his goal return was the least it has been.  He is nearly 34 now so understandable, but he's contracted until 2032 so got another 3 seasons to play and only 22 goals needed.

Having failed this challenge so many times now I’m pretty impressed mate! Wish I could learn the art of getting that many games out of my striker without him spending half the season injured 😜 do you do light training schedules or something?

Thanks mate.  The training schedules are just standard, i don't change them. However i have used Chuba numerous times in this years game and i knew from experience he has a brilliant injury record. It also helps that he never gets an international call up, i find it strange as he qualifies for Nigeria as well as England but i have never seen him get called up for either so he gets crucial rest periods in international weeks. Even now at the age of 34 his pace is 17 and stamina 15. What i do tend to do near the end of the season if his condition is 85%-ish going into a game i start him and if he scores a few goals in the first half i will sub him off at half time so he's 100% (or near enough) for the next game.

So after a cracking start to season 13 Chuba Akpom has hit his 1000th goal for Glasgow Rangers (below figures include 3 goals for Hull) in 692 games for the club! What an achievement and chuffed to bits to get him to complete this.  He still has two more seasons after this so i will press on and see what total he reaches when he retires.

 

I have just noticed his games played has only increased by 4 games from last season when he has actually played 15 so far. I am just going to go through and manually count his games and goals. Is this a bug anyone has come across?

Funnily enough I’ve been using Timo Werner today doing that Man City Pep 1 season challenge and noticed the same thing coz he doesn’t play internationals. Nice info mate 👍

I have added up games and goals from the beginning and they all add up to a total of 746 games and 1003 goals.

Going back to my first season the total games played should have been 112 but looking at my screenshots it says 123. No idea why but it appears to now be correct and goals count not affected anyway. If anyone else has experienced this let me know.

Season 13

So close to another clean sweep but just came up short in Champs League Final.

Extra time is a theme of this season.  This time we won.

Penalty miss from Chuba but netted in extra time when we blew them away.

Gutted about this one as it was at my home stadium. Would have been the perfect fairy tale for Chuba near the end of his career.

One of my best players of this career retired at the end of this season, however in his place i gained a son!

Scott McTominay was a stalwart as a box to box midfielder, a player i will look to again in another career or challenge.

So my son Iain has been promoted to the squad.

We'll see how he develops........

Goal Count

So Chuba hit the 1000 goal mark back in October as he got the season off to a great start.  However his form dipped after Christmas but picked up again towards the end of the season to end on a very respectable 65 goals and managing to play in 57 of our 63 games.

Stats are still decent considering he's nearly 35.

Season 14

Disappointing to lose the semi final of Betfred cup and champions league in an epic few games with Real Madrid, 93rd minute winner was a killer. Usual story in the league, plenty of goals. 

Goal Count

Chuba managed to play in 50 of our 58 games. This injury kept him out for longer than the 3 weeks probably because of his age.

Still a great scoring record banging in another 60 goals.

One more season until retirement and still decent stats.

1103 goals and last season coming up!

Season 15 - Challenge complete and finished

Really patchy form towards the end of the season so not quite as successful as previous years.

Not sure why transfer acumen is so low after bringing in £1b from player sales.

Trophy cabinet.

Big win in the Betfred Cup Final.

After winning 4-2 at home i really should have gone through here but Mercado was unstoppable.

Well and truly FM'd here. Totally dominated but just couldn't score and lost on pens.

My son has developed nicely but only managed two games as he is a striker.

Over to the main man.

 

Another 56 goals in 51 games and looking at those stats i'm sure he could play until he was 40 and you could get nearly a goal a game out of him!

Despite offering him a new contract time was up.....

So in summary;

825 games played

1159 goals scored

231 assists

and plenty of awards!

 

So glad i got him to complete this challenge, by far my favourite player this year.  Other bits of info if anyone is interested.  The tactic shown below is what i used for 75% of the challenge i would say.  I tweaked at various points with instructions and player roles but this was my go-to formation/roles. My only frustration is that i managed to only get one 100 goal season out of him and for some reason i just couldn't replicate that. I have no idea what was really different in that particular season to any of the others.
