Eight seasons in now which meant that it would be my longest save ever in any edition of FM/CM in the 20 years I have played the series. I have never completed an eightieth season in any save as I would get bored by then and move on to a new save but then that’s the beauty of these challenges as they keep the interest going. I will admit that I was starting to flag a bit with this save early in the season but by mid-season the motivation was back with  a vengeance. After 2 seasons scoring 89 goals I was also hoping to break the 100 goal mark with a striker for the first time as well.

Transfers

The usual mix of letting unhappy players go and bringing in some fresh blood. I have a habit a little like Arsene Wenger of letting players contracts expire as happened with Eric Dier but I counter balance that by always making sure I pick up one or two players on a free. This year I got a player I had been tracking for awhile in Marko Rog but had never prioritised spending the £70+m on him that Napoli wanted. Fosu-Mensah comes in to add some versatility to the squad as he can play in a number of positions including CB,RB and CM and replace the versatile Dier. Mancini is an Italian regen who looks ok and may develop if I can get him some playing time.

The last two seasons we have missed out on a clean sweep by first losing a Champions League final and then last season the Copa del Rey final but this year we were back on top form as we won it all for the third time in the save. Arp was certainly prolific in finals this year as well.

The Challenges

Goretzka GaM

We will start with this challenge first as Leon had his best goal scoring season in four seasons with 13 goals. Out of those 13 goals he managed to tick off 5 more times which was one more than last year but its still slow progress. He managed to play 6 more games than last year as he was less injury prone but he also hit the dreaded age of 30.

Amiri vs Havertz assists challenge

Last season Amiri had his best haul of assists as he set up 56 goals for the team, this year it was Havertz turn to produce his best season assists wise in a Atletico shirt has he created a whopping 18 goals for the team. Amiri played 6 games less than last season and was 10 down on last seasons assists total with 46 this year. He is 24 short of 300 career assists now and at 28 he still has a good number of seasons ahead of him hopefully but I don’t expect him to get a leaderboard topping total by the end of this career.

Arp 1KC

So the target was a 100 goals or more from Arp this season. Luckily he had an injury free season with just a couple of games missed towards the end of the season as he got tired. You will have also noticed he did pretty well in our finals this season as he scored 13 goals across the 5 finals we played so did he make the magic mark?

He was prolific all season and with 17 games left to play he needed 21 goals to get to his 100^th so plenty of games to get those goals. Another 6 goals meant he was on target with 11 games to spare and despite needing to sit out a game I felt confident we would get there…but….FMM had other ideas as it decided that by Arp’s high standards his form would fall of a cliff meaning that he would score 10 goals in the final 10 games and he even rated at an unheard of 5 for one game! 10 in 10 sounds ok but it meant he would miss out on the ton by 2 goals as he finished on 98 for the season.

Ok I should be happy with that total and I am to be honest as it’s a huge total towards the 1k but I’m still so disappointed not to reach that magic total and it feels like one of those situations were FMM has screwed me a bit as there was no reason for this loss of form and it’s almost like the game decided he needed to slow down a bit . The team itself still performed to our high standards and although Arp was getting tired he was still going into games at 98% - 100% fitness as I sub him once he gets below 75% especially when we have smaller teams coming up that I expect to thrash as we did in these final games. He also missed out on a 9 AvR as well due to some of those dodgy ratings.

Oh well he is still a good age so maybe next season.

Funny how 2 goals or the lack of can put me in a grump at the end of a good season but it did. Lets hope I’m a bit more cheerful in the next update or not if you are one of the people who hope I fail

Feels like it because if he had remained consistent all year and had got 98 goals that would have been more bearable compared to form falling aweay right at the end of for no real reason.

After the hilarity of Germany crashing out of the World Cup earlier I thought I would celebrate with an update on how my German’s have been getting on for me in season 9. Last season Arp missed out on being my first 100 goals in a season striker by just 2 goals so let’s start straight away with him and see if I could go at least 2 better this season.

Arp 1K

Arp was lucky to avoid major injuries again this season and like last year only missed 3 matches when I needed to rest him. He was consistent for the whole season and by February he had 70 goals and needed to average under 2 goals a game to get to 100 in the games remaining but after last year I was taking nothing for granted.

In our final league game of the season he scored a penalty that matched last season’s total and so he went into the Champions League final needing at least a brace to hit the magic 100 total.

One game remaining, two goals needed and just Manchester Utd’s defence standing in his way. Could he do it?

 

 

Course he did the guys a legend and he got an extra one just in case!

Really happy to have got him to the 100 goal mark as it’s a huge step towards the 1k but also just to prove to myself that I can do it.

Amiri vs Havertz assist Challenge

Despite not changing anything I saw a drop in assists last season from Amiri and this season that trend continued as he could only manage 35 all season. I don’t think I scored from quite as many corners this year which had an impact as his attributes are still looking good. Those 35 assists did take him above the 300 career assists mark and with a few years left in him I’m hoping we can at least get to 400. Havertz had his best season with 22 and has crept over the 100 assists mark.

Goretzka GaM

This is slow progress now as can be expected as I tick off more times but I did manage to match last seasons total of 5 times completed. I now have 23 times left to get in the final years of Leon’s career. He again had some injuries and missed around 6 weeks of the season which has been a trademark of his for most of this career.

Little bit of fresh blood was brought into the squad this year some needed like left back Harrison and some not so much like AP Mauro De Lucas who is good but my main reason to sign him was to steal Real’s best young player.

I have a question for any of you who are still reading this. Now that I have got Arp 100 goals in a season and ticked of that unofficial challenge I had set myself should I change my tactic and try and get more goals from Goretzka to try and complete the GaM in the years he has left?

Arp is 322 goals away from the 1k and at this rate he will get that in 3 and a quarter seasons and then potentially go on to get a 1.5k. If I change tactic I’m sure Arp will still get plenty of goals but not at a rate that would lead to a 1.5k but then I may complete the GaM.

Any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

I think you are all right and I need to focus on Leon for a season or two and get this GaM done. He deserves it as in my opinion he has been a key player in this save when you consider he has scored the 2nd highest number of goals for me and has the 2nd highest number of assists as well.

I thought I would see if I could get Goretzka some familiarity as a striker but it turns out I had the same idea 6.5 years previously!

Yeah like everyone else has said focus on Leon and cross that line!

As for Amiri I have a question for you, I'm about to play a make or break season in my own 1kc, it's not looking good at the moment (I picked an older striker) so I'm going for one final hopefully career saving season where I just throw everything at it support wise. I'm currently looking for a top assisting right winged APM, is Amiri suited to this task? His results for you speak for themselves but I dunno how you're using him or if you've said so before. I'm at the point where I'm scared to take risks, even calculated ones as I need this season to get me back on track lol.
