Career Super Eagles flying high [200 Goal Intl. Challenge] Complete

 Share

Recommended Posts

So, after exiting my previous challenge due to some bizarre reason (saving a new game over my save), i thought I will do an international career.

My choice of team,

I would try to break some of the achievements and create some new records with this save.

Update 1 - End of Year 2017

Immediately after getting signed, i was handed the tough job of qualifying in World Cup Qualifiers.

Nigeria was grouped with Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia. Algeria was the favorite to top the group.

World Cup Qualifiers - August to October

A mixed bag of results. While we beat Cameroon comfortably with the veteran John Obi Mikel and Iheanacho firing apiece in the second half, Algeria hammered us comfortably and we rounded up the series with a poor draw against Zambia who we were expected to beat.

We comfortably defeated Angola and completed the sweep against Cameroon before losing a hard fought friendly against Egypt.

Th damage had been done in the World Cup qualifiers though as Nigeria had already lost their previous tie against Algeria before my joining and so Algeria proceeds to 2018 world cup as the top finisher of the group and we will not be part of the spectacle. Such a shame. Hopefully, i can build up in the coming years for the next edition.

Records since my joining:

Top Scorer: Kelechi Iheanacho 3 goals in 6 appearances

Biggest win margin: Nigeria 4 - 0 Angola (Friendly)

Biggest loss margin: Algeria 3 - 0 Nigeria (World Cup Qualifiers)

Update 2 - 2018

Just a lone friendly against USA before we started our African Nations qualifiers.

All the action was there in 1st half as Bonaventure fired us ahead with a long distance shot but the evergreen Clint Dempsey drew level with a nice tap-in.  The rest of the match saw both the sides trying to find that winner but could not finish the job.

A fantastic qualifying campaign saw us pump 25 goals in 4 matches and our win in friendlies against New Zealand and Honduras meant we finished 2018 on a 6 match unbeaten streak.

It also meant that i have bettered the existing record of the biggest win margin which will be updated in the first post.

And remember the name Paul Onuachu. The striker who plies his trade in the FC Midtjylland in Danish Superliga just went on a scoring spree since his debut against New Zealand. He scored 9 goals in 4 matches including 5 against Seychelles getting off to a fantastic start to his international career.

Records since my joining:

Top Scorer: Paul Onuachu 9 goals in 4 appearances

Kelechi Iheanacho 5 goals in 10 appearances

Biggest win margin: Nigeria 10 - 0 Seychelles (African Nations qualifiers)

Biggest loss margin: Algeria 3 - 0 Nigeria (World Cup Qualifiers)

Update 3 - 2019 African Cup of Nations

This year would be our first tournament, the African Nations Championship and my first major test. We had done fantastic in qualifying and now it was time to carry our form into the tournament.

I rested most of my regulars against South Africa as we had already qualified but South Africa took advantage and trumped us 2-0 to break our undefeated streak. We finished on top winning 5 out of 6 matches and pumped in 27 goals.

There was a lone friendly against Iran which was the only preparation we would have. Onuachu was back with his goal scoring ways and Musa showed his form as we won it easily.

We were drawn into a pretty tough group with Ghana, Tunisia and Congo. Tunisia was the group favorites with Ghana a close second.

We opened with a tough encounter against Tunisia which we lost after Onuachu had a rare off day missing 3 genuine chances.

We followed that up with a come from behind draw with Ghana after we fell 2 goals behind thanks to a Aborah brace.  But Onuachu's tap in from a fantastic cross from Musa and a Haruna screamer from 20 yards gave us a point.

We rounded off with a dominant win over Congo where Onuachu got injured.

Second Round

We drew Algeria in the second round and for the first time in this career, we managed to hold them to a goalless draw  in 120 minutes of play but then lost out in the penalties which ended our run.

Next, we wrap up this year and take a look at the goals Onuachu scored in 2019

Update 4 - 2019 Wrap up

After the disappointment of African Cup of Nations, we scheduled some friendlies to get back in track.

After a tough match against Egypt where we left till late to grab the equalizer via Osimhen in 80th minute, Super Eagles went on the offensive and hit 15 goals in 3 matches with Onuachu scoring 6 of those. He has been a goal scoring machine against the weaker sides. Now, only if he can bring his A-game against the better nations, he will surely be a legend of this save.

We finished the year with a 2-legged 2nd round against Djibouti and we beat them by identical scores in both the occasions with both our strike force, Onuachu and Osimhen getting goal apiece.

The disappointment of African Cup of Nations would mark this year as one of our lows but i am sure we will bounce back in the future.

Records since my joining:

Top Scorer: Paul Onuachu 19 goals in 15 appearances

Biggest win margin: Nigeria 10 - 0 Seychelles (African Nations qualifiers)

Biggest loss margin: Algeria 3 - 0 Nigeria (World Cup Qualifiers)

Update 5 - 2020

We once again took part in two qualifying tournaments - the World Cup Qualifiers where we have been drawn in a tough group again in form of Morocco, Tunisia and Sudan.

The other one was the  African Cup of Nations qualifiers which would be an easy passage.

Onuachu had an outstanding year with 24 goals from 10 caps becoming the top goalscorer in the country.

Also, we moved up to 38th rank in the world rankings which was a career high of this save so far.

Update 6 - 2021

This will be the year when we get another chance at African Cup of Nations. With the last edition's disappointment behind us, we were looking forward to establish ourselves in this tournament and of course Onuachu was closing in on 50 goals. So, much to look forward to.

We scheduled some friendlies to get some practice before the tournament.

But also, another striker has come through the ranks, Victor Osimhen. With 4 goals in his debut match, he looks like a long term fixture.

Congratulations on the battle for the ACON's mate, it was an enjoyable ride! Paul Onuachu is my favourite striker on 2018 so it's ace to see him doing the business for you!

As for the 200 goal challenge all I can say is best of luck!

So, i am feeling cheery. So, here is a second update of the day.

But before i go in, let just give you some stats on Victor Osimhen.

Here is how he looks statwise after 2 years of pro football.

He won the Fifa U-17 world cup Golden Boot in the 2015 edition where his 10 goals helped Nigeria to their 5th title. He got signed with VFL Wolfsburg in 2017 and he has been playing for them in the Bundesliga ever since.

And, here is our current leading scorer, Paul Onuachu looking like in 2023:

We win the ACON back to back and Victor Osimhen announced his stardom at the international stage with an outstanding 20 goals in 6 matches with Onuachu supporting him with 7 of his own. The semi-final win over Egypt was the toughest game of the journey but we finished the cup with 33 goals scored and only 4 conceded.

The easier part was said and done and it was an out and out Osimhen show in the final game of the year with Osimhen pumping in six goals. The hard part was about to start next year though as we have been failing in these and it's about time that Nigeria played the world cup.

Now, this upset me. While we were able to beat all these teams in the ACON qualifiers, when it came to the world cup qualifiers, we performed poorly. With 2 draws in 2 matches, we were looking again at another exit from the qualifiers and it would be the third consecutive disappointment.

Osimhen was like a goddamn freight train hitting through the opposition. His goals in league matches read as 4, 9 and 6 respectively. In all, he had scored an outstanding 19 goals in 3 league matches. A goal a-piece in 2nd round and quarter final took us to the semis where Victor was injured and we had a rare off day with Ivory Coast  beating us 3-0. Victor channeled his anger in the 3rd place playoff scoring another 5 goals against Cameroon to bring his total to 26 goals from 6 matches.

This was a real heartbreak. We exited the qualifiers without losing any matches but the draws nailed us in the coffin and it meant that for the third consecutive world cup, Nigeria will be a no-show. I am now getting desperate and if by the next edition, we don't qualify, i will call it quits on this save. Onuachu didn't feature much in this year as he had a long term injury which kept him out for 6 months. This is surely the last year that he played and his niggling injuries and the emergence of Osimhen means he may not have a place in the team come next year.

I’m loving this! The 200 goal international should be in the bag now. I’m intrigued to see what Osimhen looks like attributes wise?

I have played quite ahead to give you a screenshot but he has greens in aerial, shooting, stamina, pace and close to green in other areas. He is a perfect successor to Onuachu with 18 in aerial.

Osimhen was badly hit by injuries in the run-up to the tournament that he had made his own and so he could only muster 3 goals en-route to Nigeria's 3rd title under my coaching. Iheanacho and Bonaventure stepped up to fill the shoes if Osimhen and finished as top 2 goalscorers of the tournament.

Osimhen started well with 2 goals in group matches before getting himself suspended thus missing the first knockout game. We managed to beat South Africa although it was a very nervy match. He showed his true class in the semis against Ivory Coast when he smashed a hattrick after being behind twice and then in the final his penalty sealed the title for us.

6 goals in the tournament is nothing to be laughed at but it is too modest for Victor's standards.

So, the world cup year is upon us but first our regular order of business, the ACON 2031 qualifiers:

Another 47 goals scored by Nigeria with Victor scoring 14 of them. We also bettered our biggest win beating 14-0 against South Sudan.

World Cup 2030

We were drawn into Group H with Belgium, Slovenia and Colombia.

We started against Belgium, the toughest opponent of the group but we were delighted when Victor gave us the lead on 23rd minute with a scorching volley. We managed to hold them on for 89 minutes before they equalized via a header from a corner on the 90th thus snatching a point. The next two games were fairly easy when we beat Slovenia and Colombia by identical scores of 2-0 and qualified for the second round.

Round of 16

We met Cameroon in the second round and they fought tooth to tooth with us but finally we managed to beat them by a solitary goal.

Quarter Final

We met the mighty Netherlands in the quarters and drew first blood through Ndidi on 18th minute.  Holland drew level on 21st but we again took the lead via an Ohawuchi header. The second half was all about us defending while Holland trying to equalize and in the end we held on for a famous victory and a semi-final appearance. We had already bettered our previous world cup record and anything could happen now.

Semi-Final

Spoiler

Screenshot_2018-07-25-07-52-24-63.thumb.png.02d6c8fcce6fe97df6e9fe5c24559063.png

What a match. We were facing the giants i.e Germany and to their surprise, we took the lead and then doubled it on 30th minute. Everyone was shocked. Nobody had expected this. Germany pulled one back via Nagelsmann (regen) and we were a goal ahead into the break. We doubled our lead again on 58th and held on but Nagelsmann put in a fantastic performance scoring two more to complete his hattrick and send the game to extra time.  No more goals scored so now it was down to the lottery of penalties. We lost and it was heartbreak for the Eagles but what a fight it was. We had still not lost in the world cup in normal time.

3rd Place Playoff

The heartbreak in the semis ignited a fire inside the Eagles as they demolished Ivory Coast 8-1 to win a deserved 3rd place in the world cup. I was so proud of this team. They had defied expectations. Victor added 5 goals to his tally in the world cup.

Yes!!! I conquered my 5th ACON title and we did it three in a row this time. What a moment. Victor was on the job again firing in 17 goals and taking the Golden Boot honors. This tournament was his favorite as he became the all-time leading goalscorer of ACON with 72 goals across 5 tournaments, which will take something special to beat.

My final year with the Super Eagles also yielded an unbeaten year with 6 wins across friendlies in addition to our ACON exploits. Victor hit 2 more goals to add to his tally and i forgot to take screenshot of our world cup 3rd round playoff against Mozambique where Victor hit six more before he rode off to the sunset as injuries conquered him.

The next update will be the final one detailing the players who were standouts in this save.

Also, we achieved a historical high ranking:
