Career Rob tries the MSN vs BBC Challenge - Challenge finished

I’ve been trying to get a bit of enthusiasm back for FMM - my Isak 1kc pretty much drained me - so I’ve decided (alongside my Strikerless H2H with Taff) to try this challenge created by @Titjes.

It can be found here:

In a nutshell, you play three seasons each  at Real Madrid and Barcelona, starting from scratch each time. At Madrid you sell/demote Bale, Benzema, and Ronaldo, replacing them with a player each from Wales, France, and Portugal who perform in the top line. At Barca you sell/demote Messi, Suarez, and Dembele (as Neymar has already left for the riches of Paris) and replace them with an Argentinian, Uruguayan, and Brazilian who also play anywhere in the top line.

The target is to beat the goals and assists set by each trio. Points are awarded for league and cup wins, as well as goal difference.

As the Barcelona targets are much higher, and because I am a grade A chicken, I am starting with Madrid. The Real Madrid totals to beat over the three seasons are:

  • 102 assists;
  • 269 goals

So who did I picked to replace the boys?

Well, for Wales the options aren’t too great. I did ponder using Woodburn, but I opted for Berti’s brother:

Big Sam (no, not that one) has hopped on the jet to join us. So which Portuguese chap has followed him?

Andre Silva followed his heart - more likely the money - and came on over. Let’s hope he is a Giant for us.

For the Frenchman I had a few options, but I thought I would brave the mean streets of Glasgow and get this lad in.

One of the world’s many Dembele’s has come onboard.

Wish me luck!

Nice player choices, not what you’d normally expect for this challenge so it’s nice to see some new faces get some love. Vokes looks like he’ll make a quality TM. All the best Rob

Thanks. Vokes has done well so far. I was surprised to see his attributes so high.

Cheers mate. Definitely give it a go. The Barca targets are scary though!

Cheers mate. Not far from finishing season one. Not entirely sure the Madrid faithful appreciate my style of football though 😭

Season 1

(I will put the hits everyone will skip past in spoilers)

So how did Vokes, Silva, and Dembele get on in their first season at the mighty Madrid?

Well the first job was to sign the boys, sell Bale, Benzema, and Ronaldo, and then build my team.

The transfers in and out are:

Spoiler

Out went A LOT of people including the big three. Ronaldo didn’t appear on transfers for some reason, but he was part exchanged for KDB so I have included a screenshot.

And in came the players to fit my tactic.

It is a three season challenge for each club so I had to make wholesale moves.

With the transfers done, let’s see whether the VSD took the club to any glories.

Spoiler

We kicked off with the European Super Cup against United which we took home thanks to two injury time goals by the boys.

Next up was the two legged Spanish Super Cup against our biggest domestic rivals.

An excellent first leg away from home make the second leg non-consequential.

The next final was the Club World Championship. After an easy semi final...

...could we win the final?

CC4EAFF7-93A0-43CF-9A03-37CD6D5788CD.thumb.png.1f1df7f9699f16ef8a1fbe96dfdcd6de.png

Yep, with Berti’s brother netting twice.

Our Spanish cup final was against Valencia.

which we narrowly won after a shocking first half an hour. Vokes loves finals this season.

Could we add the League and Champions League?

The league came home...

...but the Champions League didn’t.

Hazard scored on the counter and their defence stood well against the VSD. It just means I miss out on two easy games next season plus one slightly trickier.

105 goals in the league.

So after that season, how did the boys do?

Not too bad.

128 goals. 79 assists. Quite pleased with that, especially considering the players I’m trying this with.

Silva also got Best Player in Europe, which is a crufts category I’ve never heard of.

2C789A86-E02D-40C7-A6F4-394593BD0E1B.thumb.png.d2f1d0256987cfc7f0af9b2d1638386a.png

So, in summary:

  • 1 league title;
  • 4 cups;
  • 128 goals of the 270 I need;
  • 79 assists of the 103 I need

Assists pretty much sorted, so I’m going to put someone better on corner and try and get the targets (near enough) done in the next season.

My biggest issue with the Spanish league is the amount of games as all cup competitions are over two legs and the season takes forever

Same in England really as you’ve got the league cup which is just a waste of time!

Yeah but you’ve only got one cup competition in Spain iirc? Whereas in England you have two. I may be completely wrong though!

If that’s the case I’d rather manage in Spain because if you get drawn against a lower league side you’ve got two legs to put as many goals past them!

Fair point, the league cup is rather pointless, just scrap it, and have the FA cup spread over the year

Agreed, and make it so that the top teams have to enter from the first round instead of the third. That would give lesser sides more of a chance to face an elite premier league team.

If you get to the final of everything it is 65 games in Spain and I think it is 67 in England.

I thought England was more. Thanks for confirming that I was right 😂

What’s the league with the most overall?

For top sides I’d think England. But then when you go down to the lower leagues it would be more. A championship side going to all the finals would be a huge total of games imo. Say a championship side won the FA Cup but remained in the championship, they’d have 46 league games, league cup and Fa cup games from earlier rounds and Europa league games on top of that the following season. Would be a massive amount 😂

Thanks mate. Once I move on to the Barcelona stage it’ll get more difficult. Their squad doesn’t really suit my tactic besides Alba and Rakitic.

A little Brucy-bonus picture: the World Eleven based on last season. Vokes?

Anyhow, on to Season  2. The targets are to beat 102 assists and 269 goals over three seasons don’t forget.

Overall it was a clean sweep during the season. Losing the CL final last season against Chelsea meant we were down two cup, but beating Chelsea in the final this year more than makes up for that.

2AD9FD4F-496E-4E00-8ADC-1F378BB15712.thumb.png.f30880314f9a602d5eba3031aa5f7261.png

Transfer wise, I brought in the two young Argentinian strikers not only as backups, but moreso to test them for my Barcelona stage of this.

034A3518-AB12-4EDC-AD01-DEB1B06D9B4E.thumb.png.8a2eaf3be6c124e6a6f73ab73c384eb9.png

Dele and Lucas came in early doors. Kessie and Diaware at two of the best DLPs this year and will form part of a tactic test in season 3.

9C4EA081-5FAC-4585-8330-19384FCEB10B.thumb.png.8913913da97b3b6b5c25a2bd7369fdac.png

Laporte barely played so I let him go. The rest are kids departing.

So, on to the main events:

A22923A6-8811-41C4-84ED-A8B07A2ED487.thumb.png.fb879d890ef131a6891411301fc4efd2.png

Dembele has a drop in goals this year. Five less games, twelve less goals.

6458B892-9858-41DF-85BF-C898E119478A.thumb.png.d31d77590f630bcb083f2857aab3c75f.png

Whereas Silva’s goals per game ratio went up.

860CB2EA-B51A-48CA-A1CA-DC68F343A7A2.thumb.png.cb29c31a99f9be5a37b7358b7dc9585b.png

And Vokes is basically a superhero. He is the complete opposite of a flat-track bully in that he scores in all the big games.

126 goals this season. 128 last year. 254 in total. 16 needed in season 3 to beat 269 goals and complete this round.

In terms of assists, we got 66 this year. A drop from 79 of last year, but I put KDB on corners in the hope we’d score more from them. But it is 145 in total and beats the 102 assists needed.
