                            SEASON 5.

 

Welcome all the my latest turn in our threesome challenge.

With Foxy posting a more than respectable 90 with Pjaca last season i felt i had to match that.

One thing stood in my way...who do i choose as my converted winger? Well, the way my chosen tactic works requires a aeriel beast uptop and to be honest there isn't alot of wingers with fantastic heading abilities.

I didnt fancy changing my tactics to suit a different winger so i had to think outside the box and that lead me to my choice.

He isn't from a silky country like Brazil and isn't a  technically gifted Frenchman either...infact he comes from a near neighbouring country and lovers of IRN BRU! 

Please be up standing for my player of choice.

Yes....i went for a player who is infact a fullback but can play as a winger.

 

Now that little introduction is out of the way lets get into our season.

Rob and Foxy had snapped up some gems on their turns and the squad looks pretty damn good so the transfers in were very minimal. 

Foxy had snapped up Gk Onana on a free from Ajax and i added Paterson for £10m and another CB in Soyuncu for a cool £45m.

The outgoings were mostly reserve players who were out of contract and weren't progressing so they had to go.

Ruben Dias was moaning his arse off and most of the squad hated him so he had to go to keep the harmony.

COMPETITIONS

 The league campaign got off to a storming start and we went through the season without losing a game.

SUPERTACA

The curtain raiser to the season had us pitted against Sporting Lisbon.

It took penalties for us to take the victory but it was sweet non the less.

 

TACA DE PORTUGAL

We reached the final where we faced Porto.

LEAGUE CUP

We reach another domestic final and its Porto once again in our way of a domestic quadruple.

PAVON ASSISTS

Now onto our other little target of seeing how how many assists Christian Pavon can get.

Foxy set a fantastic 44 last season, could i better that.

Unfortunately Pavon couldn't match last seasons total but 35 is not to sniffed at.

 

So we come to the point in the update where we find out if our fullback/winger has converted to score us the 30 goals required to carry on.

You saw how Paterson looked at the beginning of the update and this is how he looked by the end of the season.

Despite being on striker training the entire season he never actually mastered the role and stayed yellow throughout.

He does look mighty impressive though thanks to @Nucleus's training programme.

So how many goals did Paterson get? Well....he did manage the 30 we required but he did get a few more, infact he smashed in 92!!!

From a player not even renowned as a winger or a player of attacking stature i have to say i am pretty damn pleased.

Thats it folks, the save has been passed over to Rob for his turn, so stay tuned as i think it could be a doosey.

What a season buddy! Joint Best with Foxy’s first one IMO. Your tactic is an utter machine and I can’t wait to see you try a 1kc with it once we have finished this. You’ve set a massive target again.

Great job @Woody mate! That is a massive massive season. Callum is a favourite of mine (and a few others around here if I remember correctly). I think I eventually got him green as a striker in one of my 1KCs last year. Love him!

Yeah i only ever get the odd youngster who sometimes moan but on the whole i think its perfect. Players improve so quickly.

To be honest i can see Rob hitting 100 on his turn, the squad is awesome now and he was really close on his 1st turn so i can see happening.

Firstly, a bonus photo. @Woody‘s last converted winger - Calum Paterson - who played up front and scored 90 goals got In to Team of the Season. At right back! (Which I think may have happened in someone’s (Sam, I think?) before)

Season 6

This challenge has met really high standards so far, which has bizarrely put a lot of pressure on us all. Both @Foxy and @Woody have both hit 90 in their last seasons, so I had a challenge to match them and also hit my previous effort of 96 goals.

So who did I sign as my converted winger?  Well, I scoured the transfer market and looked at players who fitted my profile and had a green on the wing. One player caught my eye - one player I have a bit of history with. This man:

Yep, my Strikerless hero Asensio has joined us! I know he isn’t ideal for the challenge, but I couldn’t resist.

Transfers 

In terms of other bits and business I sold Vinicius and Rodrygo for large profits having purchased them cheaply in my previous season. I also couldn’t turn down the offer for Krovinovic. I also managed to sell Paterson, which will upset the Woodster.

Incomings were the main man, but also Pulisic. The others were more investments. I’ve also got a few more lined up for the end of the season, so it’ll be interesting if Foxy confirms them or not.

Trophies

The chaps has smashed the competitions so far. It gave me all the fixtures but also made me want to give Foxy everything to play in. The Supertaca and Euro Super Cup double came first. 

A Keita hat trick and one for Marco in the Supertaca.

And then a brace apiece for the main man and Joao Carvalho (who is brilliant). 

We bashed our way through the league, crushing teams. At Christmas we had a break whilst we played in the CWC.

  

Another Asensio double got us the cup.

I tightened the formation up a bit towards the business end of the season to give us the best chance of winning everything. Next up was the League Cup final, which we took comfortably. 

The league was won nice and early and we had progressed nicely towards the domestic Cup and Champions Cup finals.

Despite dominating the game we lost the Cup on penalties. Would we do the same in the Champions Cup?

Nope!

 

We actually had the reverse. Bayern dominated the game but we nicked it, with Asensio grabbing what turned out to be the winner.

We only lost one all season, which was the League Cup on pens. Job done.

Our overall record and percentages looks good still.

Asensio

How did Asensio do? He had a few injury niggles, but still managed to play 59 games as the main injury of almost a few months had a busy international period in it.

His attributes looked great at the end, but I never managed to retrain him fully.

Sadly, though, he didn’t hit the 90 goal mark. He still did great though, with 86 goals.

So now we only need 484 goals to get our 1kc from Converted Wingers.

Excellent season from Acensio when you consider the injuries and the fact he never retrained to even dark green as a striker.

Great stuff @Rob2017! he didn't quite get to the 90 mark, but that shows you the amount of excellence going on here that that's the mark you're aiming for! Given the injuries etc, it's a massive result. 😄

Season 7

This is my third turn with the save having previously used Cervi and Pjaca as my converted wingers with Pjaca the most successful with 90 goals. My aim was to at least beat that total this season. My choice this season was controversial as it turns that @Woody and @Rob2017 have both had there eyes on him as there potential next choice and I may have neglected to put him in my shortlist of targets when I sent it to the guys.

My choice was Mikel Oyarzabal that I shall from now on be calling Mikel for short.

He maybe isn’t as quick or strong as I would like but they should improve over the season but his shooting, movement and aerial are all good so he will do for me.

First up lets see what else went on this season.

When I looked in the reserves I noticed that Pjaca was still rotting away down there so I sold him to Lille at an absolute bargain price £1.6m so he can get his career back on track. Another club that got a bargain was Barcelona as they snapped up Rob’s pick last season Asensio for £47.5m. The rest was players that weren’t going to get a game and wanted to leave but I was sad to let Lemina go to Hoffenheim as he was one of my hero’s from season 1.

The squad we have assembled over the last 6 seasons is awesome so not much business was needed here. Rob had set up a lot of wonderkids to sign when the window opened so I accepted all them but the only first teamer I needed to sign was a LB to replace Aaron who left on a Bosman. In the end I went with Jannes Horn who joined from Roma for £60m.

Competitions

Rob won everything going last season so for the first time in the save I had a chance to go for the full set of trophies that Benfica can go for. In the league we only dropped 4 points all season as the game screwed us out of two games as it seems to like to do. The super cups and domestic cups were won easily enough and we made the Champions League final versus Real Madrid who we dispatched 3-0 with Mikel getting 2 goals.

How did all that success translate into goals for Mikel?

He started the season on fire and knocked off the 30 goals needed to keep the challenge going in 15 games making me hopeful that he could get a really impressive total this year. Unfortunately after that his form took a bit of a drop and by drop I mean he was only scoring at just under a goal a game for a couple of weeks. Luckily that form picked back up and the 3 goals he got in the last 2 games of the season took him over Pjaca’s total of 90 as he ended with 91 goals for the season.

As silly as it sounds considering he outscored Pjaca but I was a little disappointed with Mikel. This may be because he started so quickly and then tailed off for a little while. I had hoped that his better aerial ability may have made a difference by getting a few headed goals but that didn’t really materialise even with wingers like Sessegnon and Pavon providing the crosses.
