Hertha Berlin is not the first club you would decide to be if I ask you to head to Germany for a save. Mostly overlooked and unappealing to many, but when you take a closer look the potential with this team is clear to see. Its got German youth players throughout its squad and a number of experienced individuals whos mere presence can only aid your youthful squad. 

I had a dabble with Hertha at the start of the release of FMM18 and after a number of seasons I moved on to different saves, however I have returned for round two with a different goal in mind. To win everything possible and more within the allocated time frame. 

A history of Hertha Berlin

As you can see from above they have barely graced the european stage or won the league in a serious amount of time! 

The first aims of the save for the first three seasons are as follows:

- Win the League within 3 seasons

- Win as many cups within 3 seasons

- Make it past group stages of Champs league within 3 seasons.

So It Begins!

As you can see from the picture below training facilities and youth I am more than happy with. Stadium Capacity is amazing also for what is essentially a smallish club.

The board have given me the option for what I believe I can achieve for this season. I decides Euro Cup Qualification was the one.

Mostly gold and silver badged staff however a few quick wins with the bronze ones. I quickly removed them and replaced with silver/gold. I also changed my coaches so that I had fitness, attacking, defensive and general. 

Positives and Negatives of the current crop of talent. I do take notice of this generally however I dont intend to sign a left back or a goalkeeper.

The talent within

Stark - One of my favourite defenders on the game.

Weiser - As I will be using Wingbacks he will slot in nicely. Once trained I found him to be a solid wingback.

Maier - Young and talented hes solid after a few seasons. 

Selke - Many will remember him from RBL in their debut season. Solid poacher who I will play as Shadow Striker. Quality player who grows each season.

Lazaro - Loanee at the start of the save. Buyout fee of £5.75m absolute steal. I agree to sign him at the end of the season.

Baak - solid defender who I am to loan out to gain experience.

Torunarigha - solid ball playing defender who I will blood little and often. After a few seasons he will be the first name on the teamsheet.

Mittelstadt - young and aggressive left back who will slot in at left wing back for me.

Transfers In

Martinez my favourite young striker on the game. Used him on a 1k challenge which I failed after he got a 9 month injury.

Henrique was an absolute find and Ill post his stats and form later on in the career.

Silva was a cheap 1 season option just tl be a squad player.

Sancho - the talent speaks for himself, signed on loan to aid my squad after I sold Kalou for a massive return of £16m

Hoogma - talented BPD who is a potential summer signing if funds are available.

Richard - A find who after a few games convinced me to sign him at the end of the season.

Leckie was a part ex for Leicester City need centre back Soyuncu.

As you can see I generally try to line up with a youthful squad. I always aim to sign players with the future in mind.

That was a good read mate and your right, they wouldn’t be my initial pick of teams but like the reasoning and approach you have to this challenge. It’s going to be a good journey I’m sure, and I’m looking forward to following your updates.

Season 1 Review

The season started off strong we floated around 3rd to 6th throughout the beginning of the season and found ourselves looking good coming out of January.

Below is some of my favourite wins throughout the season. 

Bruono Henrique was an absolute gem of a find, a risky signing after selling Kalou but he proved to be a complete steal of a player. 

I mixed it up throughout the season with Martinez and Selke as I could not decided which striker was my number 1.

Esswein I used rarely throughout the season as he was transfer listed and I did not see him as a squad player. He was played against Dortmund as I found myself short of players due to injuries. What a game he had!

Progress in the league was going to plan and we was doing above expectations in the Euro Cup until we drew Man City!

Drawing City was always going to be a tough two games. We was beating both times resulting in a 4-1 agg loss. Our Euro journey ended 😭.

Our season fell apart after this double loss. Injuries mounted with Martinez and Selke both out for 1-2months. 

Suspensions and injuries inflicted us to a dreaded run with the squad misfiring with Da Silva leading the line.

We fell sharply from 3rd to a poorly 10th position.

However, we go again.

Players results for Season 1

Our shining light at the end of a disappointing first season was this guy. 

Best player in Europe and Players Player of the Year.

I forgot to grab a screen shot of him at the end of the season however this is how he looks currently and his return on last season.

Kalou sold for £16m and he was signed for a bargain £5m. I was not expecting him to be as solid as he was.

Season 1 ends, the chapter ended and the book firmly shut. Season 2 beckons!

- Make it out the group stages within 3 seasons - N/A

Season 2 

As I had conducted a fair amount of business in season 1 ready for season 2 I was only expecting minor changes - youth in mind, cheap and squad players ideally.

However I was disappointed with the talent available for me in the transfer market. I had £6m to play with as Lazaro, Richard, Lunin and Soyuncu ate deep into my kitty. 

I decided to haggle my way through signing players who may not start but would hopefully stop the rot that we experienced in the last 10 games of last season.

Below is the results I ended up with.

Fossum was signed as I needed a Box to Box midfielder. Duda didnt cut it for me last season and I never rated the other options I had. Duda was sold for a mere £12m but I needed the cash to finance a few more deals.

Lunin was signed to fight it out for number 1. I wasnt going to sign Predrag as I use him so much but the goalkeeping position was in need of some depth.

Maroni I have never used in previous saved but after looking at some other Brazilian options he was the cheaper option and his age swung it for me.

Llorente and Pereira was signed on loan to boost my squad numbers more.

Minimal transfers leaving the club. Even after listing a high number of players no bids worthy of acceptance materialised.

Results so far

Sitting pretty at the top. Happy with the results so far. The squad is solid although I am still unhappy with certain positions mainly my depth in wingback options.

One surprise package so far in season 2 has to be this guy. Out on loan in season 1, I had already earmarked him for sale. However his performances in pre season changed my mind and even had me loan out Lazaro instead.

Great read there mate, not a perfect first season but it’s foundations to build upon, not a bad run in the champions league either mate, city are no walk over. To have a player win player of the year in your first season is awesome. Looks like you have had a good start to the second season, hopefully that continues.

Season 2 review

After leaving the last post 9 games in, I felt it was fitting to pick up the game from January.

Our form was decent however Bayern are an absolute beast to keep up with. A couple of draws, followed by a couple of losses resulted in Bayern moving into 1st with a 6pt cushion!

Transfers In

I decided to sign Izzy Brown who I have not used before to give me more options up top and in midfield. I also signed Davies from Everton to play in an AP role. He proved to be a worthy signing however I neglected to collect a screen shot. His value spiked to £35m with the club wanting £53m to sign him. Clearly he wont be coming back for season 3 😢.

Achraf was signed as my main right wingback kept picking up injuries. He performed well enough however he always ended the game with a crappy rating.

Positive Results

Below you can see we was scoring from all areas of the squad. Unfortunately I am testing the tactic and therefore I cannot share currently.

However our cup run was ended in brutual fashion. Losing to Bayern on penalties. The guy who missed was Martinez, you would of bet your house on him scoring! 🙈

A shining light for Season 2 was this little gem however he picked up an injury which saw his season ended for a 4 month spell on the side lines.

A fair few greens sprouted up helped by Intensive Training and some 10 games played. He may push for starting AP role for season 3.

I now have a new issue that has reared its ugly head throughout the whole season - Stark, Martinez and Selke all want to leave for larger clubs. The big clubs are circling but the offers are not high enough for me to accept currently.

I pretty much benched or left Stark out of the team for the season in the hope he may change his mind but this failed to help. I blooded a youth player who I shared in post one who was more than steady at the back

End of Season 

The Bayern steam train continued and Dortmund made a late surge for 2nd! We finished as follows.

I want to say Im disappointed but I think that would be unfair, a massive improvement on the season before and qualifying for European game time.

Genki Haraguchi who I mentioned would be a star for season 2 proved to be exactly that. 40 games played 20 goals scored for a ISF, more than happy with that!

Henrique had a fairly timid season and was subbed a fair few times throughout the season. Iver Fossum performed well in midfield as did Maier.

Second season running a Hertha Berlin player has one Footballer of the Year! The jewel of the crown this season, take a bow Haraguchi! 👊

As of yet none of my objectives have been achieved so season 3 is setting up to be a MASSIVE season.

Now to become Del Boy in the transfer market and make some magic happen!

A decent season mate, great work. Some great dominating results there mate, good amount of goals and clean sheets too. That cup final though, never easy loosing on pens. Looking forward to a great 3rd season

Season Three

The final season in which for me to complete my aims set out in the OP. No pressure 😳!

I made a few major signings for Season 3 with the rest being squad players to see us through the season. 

Amiri is an absolute talent as you will see from his stats in this post. £13m and a player was a bargain considering Southampton wanted to sell Ward Prowse to me for £52m even though the agreed buyout fee for the loan was £10.25m...how that even works lets not get me started! 

Dan-Axel is another favourite BPD ive used on a number of saves this year. Relatively cheap but an asset to the squad for future seasons.

Burnic I loaned straight out and Perea was a backup striker to Selke and Martinez.

Maffeo was a free signing that played most of the season at Wingback keeping out Weiser! Bargain!

Results 

Our delightful form had me excited for the season ahead. Only negative was I was hoping to score more goals!

Sitting pretty at the top - unbeaten!

First three games in European Cup was fantastic! Beating all three had me hopeful.

Through to Febuary we were unbeaten in the league, top of the table by a decent margin and only one loss in the European Cup to Napoli - My centreback was sent off after 20minutes! 😡

Meeting Chelsea proved to be the end of our European Cup run as we lost 5-0 on agg. Disappointing end to a decent run.

End of the Season

We finally WON the league and with a decent points gap from Bayern who were actually 3rd throughout the season. Have I finally caught the beast or was this a lucky season??

We only lost 2 games all season! Love that!

As you can see over 3 seasons I havent spent the world and also made a decent return from player sales with the majority of the squad kept and developed. 

We completed the three goals I set out to complete within the three seasons

- Win the league within 3 seasons ✔

- Win as many cups as possible - We won 1 ✔

- Make it out the champions league group in 3 years - ✔
