So, after i unfortunately overwrote the MU jersey save, i wanted to get into the thick of things, so i am attempting another jersey challenge which also has gone unnoticed by the community:

The Curse of Chelsea's No.9 Shirt Challenge

So here is the third our the trilogy of famous shirt number challenges, myself and @NucleusNTwere looking at another club for this final challenge but I found an interesting alternative in Chelsea!

One of Chelsea’s first tasks when Alvaro Morata completed his switch from Real Madrid was to allocate him a shirt number. There are a few to pick from – and while one stands out it might be a mistake to give it to the striker.

But which shirt number will he be wearing? 8, 20 and 25 are also unused. But the obvious option is No.9 – the traditional number worn by a club’s leading striker.

But when it comes to Chelsea, that particular shirt has become the one to avoid. Most Chelsea fans would agree that the last striker to live up to the billing of the No.9 jersey was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink – and he left the club in 2004!

Since then the wearers read like a who’s who of total let-downs. Since the Hasselbaink the occupiers of the No.9 jersey have been Mateja Kezman, Hernan Crespo, Khalid Boulahrouz, Steve Sidwell, Franco Di Santo, Fernando Torres and Radamel Falcao. It’s little surprise many Chelsea fans think the shirt is cursed.

Can you break the curse?

RULES

  • Load up England and any other countries you like.
  • Become manager of Chelsea.
  • You must first buy in an Serbian striker to start the challenge, the new "Kezman" and first Number 9.
  • You have one season with each nominated Number 9 before they are demoted or Sold, never to play first team football again.
  • You must follow the list below to sign a new Number 9 each season from country of birth, these players must be bought in at the start of each season.
  • Mateja Kezman - SERBIA
  • Hernan Crespo - ARGENTINA
  • Khalid Boulahrouz - DUTCH (Must be a Defender)
  • Steve Sidwell - ENGLAND (Must be a Midfielder)
  • Franco Di Santo - ARGENTINA
  • Fernando Torres - SPAIN
  • Falcao - COLOMBIA
  • Alvaro Morata - SPAIN
  • Each season your Number 9's goals and assists will become your total.
  • With Boulahrouz and Sidwell not being Strikers you can either play them in their own positions or in a Striking role but these players cannot have any colour in the striking postions on the postions screen.
  • In total, 8 seasons with 8 players to post the highest combined total of goals and assists.
  • Usual other rules apply.
  • No Regens allowed

Curse of No. 9 Stage 1 - Serbia

So, we are using Mitrovic as you all know but first, let us get the transfers:

Had an abundance of players so sold out those i didn't need.

Brought in Goretzka as usual as i am a fan of this man and Cuadrado was brought in to give depth to our wingback.

We were leading the league for most part of the season but a bad last month coupled with a surge meant we lost out to my nemesis Man City again, this time on goal difference. 😫

Got dumped out of Champions League by Juve and Carabao Cup by the Spurs. Won the Community shield and FA Cup though.

Great first season from Morata. Leading the goalscorer's list in the league and winning an impressive 12 POTM. Scored 45 goals in his first season for us.

Not good at all. Only 14 goals and 19 assists giving me a total of 33 points. He missed a month due to injury and then when he came back his performance dipped, only hitting in form in the last few games.

Carvajal was brought in to play on either of our wings while Rulli as usual becomes our rotational keeper.

Fantastic. Clean sweep. First time in the history of my FMM that i have achieved this.  We just missed out on 100 points and 100 goals in the league as after winning the league with 8 matches to go, i started playing my backup players and they messed it up, losing 2 matches and drawing 3.

He completely wiped out the dissapointment of Mitrovic. With 39 goals and 27 assists, he gave me a total of 66 points.

Anyway, not a great start, I thought Mitrovic would be better than that, but there you go, injury can mess things right up. You are well back on track though, great work! 🙂

Thanks. Mitrovic was a letdown but Vietto has made it up. Now the next stage is trickier as De Vrij doesn't want to retrain. Although i have an idea as to how to utilize him. Expecting some low score for this stage.

Our two forwards, Batshuayi and Morata combined to fire hattricks apiece in the two legs to completey destroy the Gunners.

Again dominated against The Reds with Batshuayi netting a brace and pretty much everybody chipping in.

Hazard and Morata fires hattrick in semis and finals respectively for an easy title win. de Vrij misses penalty each in semis and finals but then redeems himself by hitting one, and look at the name of the goalscorer for America, Oscar Boy. Now, i would love to bring home the Oscar.

Batshuayi's first proper season where he was constantly played upfront and he shined in his blue jersey, netting in 50 goals in 66 appearances, which not even Morata could manage.

Went in with zero expectations. So, 10 goals and 14 assists gave me 24 points which is decent enough. The goal tally would have been more if he hadn't missed penalties.

Yeah I thought Mitrovic would have had a better season too, unlucky start mate but a better second season, ok third and I’m interested to see how you do with your 4th. I like that you have chosen a less obvious player to use, always makes it more interesting that for sure.

Yes, gutted to lose the league in third but De Vrij did the best he could do and yes, the less obvious choice makes for a better read and if they shine for you, that becomes more worthwhile.

It sure does mate, I always like seeing different players being used or players that you would instantly think of, it always makes for a more interesting read/career.

Great job - not a bad season mate, always going to be hard with a defender! I hate when they miss penalties though... 🙁

As for next season, that will be fascinating - I like that you are not going with the obvious players you mentioned. Can't wait!

After losing poorly in my H2H challenge with @Damilare, the only work remaining was to get back to this save, so here we go again.

Curse of No. 9 Stage 4 - England (Midfielder)

We select Lewis Cook as an unusal choice for this season.

Had to spend huge to bring in Cook. The others were brought in as solid backups and to give depth to the squad. Kane was brought in as Morata is becoming too injury prone and i am thinking of selling him out. The squad is now really looking like world beaters.

Another clean sweep. My second in 4 years. Also, we score 100 league points for the first time in this career. Our defense is also shaping up well. Just 34 goals conceded in the league.

Lewis Cook take a bow!!! Look at all those greens. He made it up for his lack of goals with his assists - 43 in total, the highest ever in a season in this save. He missed 8 penalties in all otherwise we would have been looking at a handsome points total.

These guys are eating their opponents out over three meals. The only complaint is they miss important matches, especially Carvajal who is a fantastic assist man, though it has not caused any major hiccups so far.

A really good effort, shame about those penalty misses but the assists are awesome. 

I bet those cards can get a little annoying when your missing them for key games!

Curse of No. 9 Stage 5 - Argentina (Striker)

Paulo Dybala comes into the fold for us this season.

Made some huge profit selling Cook for 129m which is my highest transfer fee received till date and Morata was let go as he was becoming too injury prone. Also, i would not like to have him as he is one of the players on whom the challenge is based. Both were snapped up by PSG, how deep do their pockets go??🤔

Almost an unbeaten season in the league with 100+ goals scored and 101 points achieved - my first. We retain the Champions League, our fourth straight title but other cups were a dud.

Kane and Dybala gets in 20 goals apiece at the top while Dybala also gets in second position in assists with 16. Our defence was fantastic this season conceding only 24 to give us a +81 GD.

This season was pretty close. We just about manage to progress in the knockout stages while in final we take revenge for the Carabao Cup by destroying the Spurs with Michy netting in a hattrick.

An average return from Dybala. Wanted him to break the 40 mark but he could only muster 37 and combined with 29 assists gave me 66 points. So, both the Argentinians putting up the same tally.

I am back with the next stage and as you know, it is Sandro who will be leading us to glory.

Dybala breaks the transfer fee record again and it is PSG again who snaps him up for 150 mil.

Again signing some solid players to take us forward. Umtiti comes in place of Rudiger and de Ligt will be backup for Goretzka. Jota is a fantastic player and couldn't leave the chance of signing him.

Fantastic league performance. We improve our goals scored and points with a massive 120 and 105 points respectively. Our defence once again conceded only 24 goals to give us a massive 96 GD. Wanted the 100 GD but there's always next season. Also again missed out on unbeaten run in the league with 1 game lost to Man City. Sandro leads in both goals and assists.

Better than last season. We progressed to the knockouts with 100% win record and then swept aside BMG, PSG and Napoli to reach the finals where we destroyed Dortmund. PSG has been our whipping boys facing us in the last three seasons and losing on each occasion. We have now won 5 straight UCL titles.

Most of the young graduates were let go for free while Sandro, Rahman and Salter were sold to trim the bloating squad.

Unbeaten league season. 134 goals scored in league with only 30 conceded giving us a GD of +104 and 108 points earned. Just brilliant. Hernandez and Bailey tops in the goals and assists table with 33 and 27 respectively.  Bailey has been brilliant this season as you can see later.

We again progressed with 100% win rate in group stage. Thereafter, it was very close and the final was the most competitive we had played in the last 7 years. In the shootout, it was the day of goalkeepers as both of them saved a plentiful. Courtois managed to save one more than his counterpart to help us in winning the title for the 6th straight year.
