Career Socceroos - The Golden Generation (Final Update)

So, after completing a few short-term challenges and with FMM 2019 less than a month ahead, i thought i would wrap my 2018 with the same challenge that is started my Vibe career with:

So, this time i am choosing the mighty Socceroos.

Alongwith the 200 International Goal Challenge for which i will be using this player:

jamie.thumb.png.ae5fc26194980811d5da5e397de7f23e.png

                                                              Jamie MacLaren

Bio: Jamie Maclaren (born 29 July 1993) is an Australian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Hibernian, on loan from Darmstadt 98. He has also previously played for Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar. Maclaren initially represented Scotland at youth level, but has since appeared for Australia at both youth and senior international level. He won the 2016–17 A-League Golden Boot with 19 goals.

In addition to this, i have created some new challenges for this save. One is the Calendar Year Scoring Challenge but with a twist i.e how many goals can you score with your national team in a calendar year, second is how many total goals can you score with your national team under your management. I don't know if this warrants enough attention so i have not put this under official challenge but may do so if it gets popular.

Apart from this, i will look to erase all the records of Socceroos and create some new records. The brief records history will be posted next which will be updated time to time depending on the records i create.

Thanks for anybody looking at this and wish me luck and i promise this will be my last career for 2018.

Update 1 - The 2017 wrap-up & Lead up to World Cup 2018

So, having taken over the reigns of the Socceroos, my 1st piece of business was the World Cup qualifiers. We were already sitting at the top of our group with only two matches left so this was already in the bag. So, i went about testing my tactics and:

World Cup 2018 Qualifiers

Screenshot_2018-10-08-15-16-28-91.thumb.png.b98ba6f488757c1635d31857bf24efbd.pngScreenshot_2018-10-08-15-25-44-17.thumb.png.0dbb583fc9a2eb52648b5e6ed6aa9c92.png

Very ordinary performance, especially the draw against Thailand was stupid. Perhaps complacency crept in but Maclaren managed his first goal under me so not everything was lost.

Friendlies - 2017 & Pre-World Cup

Screenshot_2018-10-08-15-40-17-29.thumb.png.46cdad22d0922ef27136e1fdec926791.pngScreenshot_2018-10-08-15-48-32-05.thumb.png.7c19e2092eeb9c9ad21a1d1a63973ca7.png

And then our ordinary performance continued. Firstly, the hosts of 2018, Russia crushed us 3-1 with all four goals scored by them and then Iran took the lead against us which we somehow managed to equalize against them.

Screenshot_2018-10-08-16-26-12-72.thumb.png.3b656bbec2553252ffe0b9f974ca54cc.pngScreenshot_2018-10-08-16-30-36-09.thumb.png.337a1010da0a98ffbc06819dcc9c3678.png

The pre-world cup friendlies were better as Maclaren notched up his first hattrick against Cape Verde but we were brought down on earth by a resilient Wales team with Bale becoming the hero of the match.

Leading in to the World Cup, Maclaren had 5 goals from 6 matches.

We were drawn into Group F alongwith Portugal, Wales and Ghana. Though not a very tough group, it was not a easy one either. The next update will be of our World Cup adventures.

Update 2 - World Cup 2018

So, we head to our 5th world cup looking to better our record of 2nd round finish but first we need to qualify from a tough group. Our preparations were not good at all as we only won 1 of our 4 friendlies. We start against the group favorites Portugal:

Match 1 (vs Portugal) - Guns of CR7

Screenshot_2018-10-08-16-58-10-38.thumb.png.75b59bfd0c126e8df0bd6390397d7399.png

Everybody had predicted the outcome but nobody had predicted the scoreline. What a crazy match!!!! Moutinho, Silva and Ronaldo scored in a space of 7 minutes to go 3 up while Maclaren pulled back before a foul on Ronaldo earned him a penalty and he notched up his second. We went in the break 4-1 down but i gave them one hell of a pep talk and the Socceroos came out all guns blazing. 3 second half goals and an OG from Danilo meant we had drawn the match 5-5 but CR7 played spoilsport as usual notching up his 4th of the match in the 90th minute to break Aussie hearts, but what an incredible fightback. One of my finest i have watched in FMM 18.

Match 2 (vs Ghana) - Slaying the Stars

Screenshot_2018-10-08-17-04-10-93.thumb.png.f48b0fcbf2b495df59ac0ff3360bfff4.png

Our confidence was sky high after that showing and Ghana was dispatched off easily. Maclaren hit his 3rd in 2 matches and Leckie, our impressive ISF notched up his 1st of the Cup before he hobbled off to a challenge.

Match 3 (vs Wales) - Parking the Aussie Bus

Screenshot_2018-10-08-17-20-18-89.thumb.png.41fe033653a0d2e017dce15968644a04.png

Well, after the goal fest of the first match, we organized our defensive capabilities against Ghana but this was a tactical battle which ended up with both teams having the same ideas. So 15 shots apiece still couldn't yield a goal.

So, with these results, we somehow manage to qualify for the next round.

Screenshot_2018-10-08-17-15-05-41.thumb.png.1880abd4cb462c4a1a9acf535f76be36.png

In the second round, we faced the mighty Germans. Surely, our run would end here as we all know even the fake Germans are strong like hell

Round of 16 (vs Germany) - The Giant-Killers??

Screenshot_2018-10-08-17-24-47-31.thumb.png.ce82f137b1c2b0ebad9aa139d2fa2e93.png

Oh holy shit!!! We actually did the unthinkable. Defeating the world champions 6-1. Maclaren bursting out with a hattrick becoming the first Australian to score one in World Cup. Germany, unable to cope with us also got two send-offs.

Quarter-Final (vs Switzerland) - Still going

Screenshot_2018-10-08-17-35-07-97.thumb.png.0a12aabe4b61f5cadfc7e110d5651c05.png

Our confidence was sky high and all it needed to dispatch Switzerland was a solitary goal from Maclaren. We were in the semis, in my first world cup in charge and it was looking like we were living a dream. Surely, we would be caught now.

Semi-Final (vs England) - Bubble has burst

We went into England having lost most of our star players to injuries and suspensions so we were wafer thin on talent and experience.

Screenshot_2018-10-08-18-00-26-00.thumb.png.6c01dbc2eca30861f85dbaf4231d5b9e.png

Yes, we were humiliated. Barkley and Rashford fired hattricks in tandem with Maclaren and Kruse managing to grab consolation goals. We were finally out of the World Cup but i was proud of my boys. Defeating Germans 6-1 is no mean feat.

3rd Place Playoff (vs Belgium) - Bad day at office

Screenshot_2018-10-08-18-16-04-87.thumb.png.aab23d8761f83b66a232a0b8bbb67348.png

What started as a fantastic run ended badly as our second choice and subs after being humiliated by England couldn't keep up with the pace of the Belgians and we had to contend with 4th place.

Some more great news followed:

Screenshot_2018-10-08-18-05-19-42.thumb.png.5bf6461fc42c6e528f4e4b3c7a57a18d.png

Jamie Maclaren wins the FIFA Golden Boot with 9 goals at the World Cup.

World Cup Final - Spain vs EnglandScreenshot_2018-10-08-18-16-39-01.thumb.png.e783b2fbfccb2e9937ec75502e24c3c0.png

Spain picked up their 2nd title via penalties after 120 minutes of play yielded 2-2.

Friendlies - Slaying the South Americans

Screenshot_2018-10-08-18-37-34-95.thumb.png.6db3096c2198af8fc00f6c9278c5680c.pngScreenshot_2018-10-08-18-43-23-62.thumb.png.7559b676bf024d9f74754162f15eddeb.png

Our run at the world cup had filled us with confidence and we slayed the South American giants Chile and Brazil with Maclaren netting his 3rd hattrick of his international career.

Brazil takes revenge

Screenshot_2018-10-08-18-52-25-34.thumb.png.999ed24a90ba1750af9d1ea8fbc3ead7.pngScreenshot_2018-10-08-18-58-50-00.thumb.png.19aad264c722a4198b8715ba8d8bedc8.png

Brazil comes back next month and this time they take revenge while Wales edged us in a highly competitive match.

Stupid AI

Our final two friendlies were against a pair of Central Asians - Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan and without looking at the squad, assuming that most of our top players will be present submitted the squad. But stupid A.I actually omitted Maclaren, Oikonomidis, Mooy and many others and we were left with bunch of youngsters.

Screenshot_2018-10-08-19-08-49-29.thumb.png.5bc5210b77bae0017552c31b433f0cf3.pngScreenshot_2018-10-08-19-12-46-18.thumb.png.7f9b3e10ca62243e08421f5deaddfbd1.png

So, that brings an end to this long update.

Update 3 - Asian Cup 2019

So, after our exploits in the World Cup, we looked forward to 2019 and our 1st order of job was the Asian Cup as we looked to make an impact.  We were drawn in a relatively straight-forward group of Tajikistan, UAE and Saudi Arabia with UAE the only one who could cause problems

Match 1 (vs Tajikistan) - Warming up

Screenshot_2018-10-09-09-30-21-83.thumb.png.cf20532e94e44ee06a68fea73301c5b4.png

A straightforward win with goals from Maclaren and Williams sees us defeat the Tajikis.

Match 2 (vs UAE) - Shock for the ages

Screenshot_2018-10-09-09-56-28-94.thumb.png.c772227df8a74002af3f2d1b8817347c.png

This was a shocker. UAE dominated us from start to finish as we couldn't cope up with their pace. Maclaren scored a consolation for us as we were thoroughly unbeaten.

Match 3 (vs Saudi Arabia) - Getting back into form

Screenshot_2018-10-09-10-02-06-87.thumb.png.ace42293e551b8b219f4ddd96aa2cea5.png

We needed to win the last match and win we did with a brace from Maclaren ensuring full points for us though he hobbled off due to injury at the 67th minute.

Here is the final group stage table:

Screenshot_2018-10-09-10-02-42-82.thumb.png.2d0681920c210ee708d2da277138ba85.png

Saudi Arabia actually tops the group after winning their other two matches.

Round of 16 (vs Iran)

Screenshot_2018-10-09-10-17-16-25.thumb.png.bb688eb926097bb31f046f9c234539cd.png

Iran were a strong opponent but we dispatched them easily, again via a Maclaren brace.

Quarter-Final (vs Kyrgyzstan)

Screenshot_2018-10-09-10-36-28-06.thumb.png.ce9c370497dda83ce237750804eeb238.png

The Central Asians were no match for Maclaren as he smashes four past them with Troisi adding a 5th.

Semi-Final (vs Saudi Arabia)

Screenshot_2018-10-09-10-47-51-49.thumb.png.1fd85165ed4c46d4404ef3c0ccd4f0b9.png

Once again the Saudis crossed our paths and we dispatched them easily. Maclaren continues his scoring spree while Kamau chips in with a brace.

Final (vs Korea)

Screenshot_2018-10-09-22-20-50-15.thumb.png.4eb138464e9c410d506f9ec86c6e9ffe.png

We had to go on penalties after 120 minutes yielded 3-3. Maclaren finishes with a high scoring a brace in the final and we held our nerves to win the shootout and the title!!! Fantastic.

Screenshot_2018-10-09-22-21-10-48.thumb.png.12340ceaa830eb070cd163eb3bd28cb0.png

Jamie Maclaren wins the Golden Boot again, this time with a staggering 13 goals. He scored in every match. He has now won two golden boots in two major competitions successively.

Screenshot_2018-10-09-22-22-13-12.thumb.png.4943f4bdf8b119c8b98a4f8672867d16.png

This is how he looks after the Asian Cup.

Friendlies - March to June

Screenshot_2018-10-10-07-53-14-41.thumb.png.9a628ae9bd399fe71fc643e749daa1b0.pngScreenshot_2018-10-10-07-57-56-68.thumb.png.69751236773b4f2c56057abef7858337.pngScreenshot_2018-10-10-11-25-03-82.thumb.png.974a3dae2470004258b8209482e7578e.png

Some big goalfests there with us coming out on the losing side on 2 of the 3 occassions. The tie against Russia was the most exciting with Smolov netting 5 and Maclaren grabbing another hattrick.

Friendlies - June to September

Screenshot_2018-10-10-11-36-48-44.thumb.png.6258a2d9591a2fc6a24bf4a5079b4aa5.pngScreenshot_2018-10-10-15-41-55-41.thumb.png.da1365401a885835a13171107c1ca56b.pngScreenshot_2018-10-10-15-49-58-36.thumb.png.55dee22e249fe1312a72f9b4f049cd8d.png

Maclaren continues his goaling spree scoring in every match he has been a part of this year. He missed the NZ match due to injury.

Friendlies - October to December

Screenshot_2018-10-10-18-36-00-43.thumb.png.514723ea1cc3f14166de093b7b4b4d3f.pngScreenshot_2018-10-10-19-06-03-35.thumb.png.47c6a8dcb0ca654ef491de50cd31cee3.pngScreenshot_2018-10-10-19-20-11-82.thumb.png.c3cd08aecef808399ab3cc2f3ff3cb99.png

The end of the year is a bad one for us as Russia trumps us again and we fail to defeat Jamaica and Montenegro though Maclaren continues his goaling spree scoring in every match he has played, his scoring streak standing at 15. We need to organize our defense well and that is what i would be looking at for next year.

Nice job mate, great to see troisi scoring in the Asian Cup final, as it was his goal that won it for us in 2015. KIU

Thanks mate. Troisi is a decent player. He has never got below 7 AvR so far in this save.

Update 4 - 2020 Friendlies & 2021 Confederations Cup

Since, we are the hosts of 2022 World Cup, we will not get any qualifiers which means less goal scoring chances for Maclaren. Oh my!!! this challenge just got harder.

We played only 9 friendlies in the year with two big losses against Belgium and Italy.  Maclaren missed only the UAE match due to suspension but he played and scored in the remaining 8 taking his scoring streak to 23.

Build up to Confederations Cup

Spoiler

We dispatched the African champions Angola with ease and survived a late surge against South Africa before losing a competitive match against World Champions and current #1 Spain. Maclaren adds three more games to take his scoring streak to 26.

2021 Confederations Cup

We qualified for this after winning the  Asian Cup. There are no easy groups in this tournament as it is literally the tournament of champions, but we got the short end of the stick when we were drawn with Copa America winners Argentina, World Champions Spain and Oceanian champions New Zealand. So, except New Zealand, the other two were virtually unbeatable for us.

Match 1 (vs Argentina) - Dream Start

Screenshot_2018-10-11-19-19-06-77.thumb.png.6e62c8e59ce72a6d84e8a05034baf899.png

What a start. A famous Maclaren hattrick saw us win against the Argentineans and the entire nation went into a frenzy. Maclaren knows how to step up in the big tournaments and we couldn't have asked for a better start.

Match 2 (vs Spain) - Goals galore

Screenshot_2018-10-11-19-32-30-80.thumb.png.102b952b68067c383f6f6b8ae5b27799.png

Spain was always going to be tough and Morata showed his brilliance notching up 4 against us, though Maclaren was not to be left behind as he pumps his second hattrick in as many matches becoming the only player to do so.

Match 3 (vs New Zealand) - Easy win

Screenshot_2018-10-11-19-36-26-82.thumb.png.3871fca583b1b3feab8081e1d6002b6d.png

We needed to win to have a chance at qualifying and it was straightforward with Maclaren getting a brace. He has raced up to 8 goals in this tournament now and we qualified for the semis.

Screenshot_2018-10-11-19-36-56-83.thumb.png.7522d6a23a5ae46159596564e82c2642.png

Semi-Final (vs USA)

Screenshot_2018-10-11-19-51-23-43.thumb.png.aebe4b28c8ee796366b90726669219a5.png

We had to wait till extra time to see off USA but this was a thrilling match. Maclaren scored his 9th of the tourney and McGree scored the winner in 95th to send us in finals. Fantastic again from the Socceroos, though we would be a depleted side going into final as 5 of our players including Mr. Maclaren would be unavailable due to suspensions.

Final (vs Spain)

Screenshot_2018-10-11-20-00-14-90.thumb.png.8cb6937cb2a3490cbe4961fdb3ef720f.png

Of course our depleted side was no match for the world champions but we fought well. The absence of so many players, especially Maclaren and Oikonomidis hurt us badly.

Nothing to see, another golden boot for Maclaren.

Socceroos in the Confederation Cup final 😎

Thanks @URz. Yes, my team is definitely performing above par in the major tournaments now. The only problem is the defense as Maclaren is definitely handling the lone striker duties very well.

Update 5 - 2022 World Cup

We had two major friendlies before the World Cup, against Germany and Austria, both much higher than us in the food chain so i was hoping for just a decent fight from my lads.

Lead up to World Cup

Spoiler

Screenshot_2018-10-12-12-50-57-43.thumb.png.9176dcf5b762da06d79b209f5f18c306.pngScreenshot_2018-10-12-12-57-38-87.thumb.png.51ca703c885f2b2f13e6a21ee35b498b.png

But Socceroos surprised me. First they held Germans to a 2-2 draw even after playing with 10 men for 86 minutes with Maclaren notching up yet another brace. Then we destroyed Austria 4-2 with Maclaren again on target with 2 goals. So, with Maclaren on song, we were confident heading into our home world cup or should we??

We were drawn with Argentina, Czech Rep. and Senegal in Group A. Quite a tough group but we were confident to qualify. Heading to our first match, we got a major shock as Maclaren got injured and would miss about a month which meant the entirety of World Cup. There goes my dreams 😖

2022 World Cup

Match 1: (vs Argentina)

Screenshot_2018-10-12-16-20-43-01.thumb.png.5f30e2bd498d89e84c596c02bb00b0a9.png

This was a thorough domination by the Argentineans and without Maclaren upfront we couldn't create any chances. A strike each from Icardi and Pavon gave them an easy 2-0 victory.

Match 2: (vs Senegal)

Screenshot_2018-10-12-16-46-26-39.thumb.png.9181e7dfcd8c94338eca0c9f6a31e855.png

We needed to win to keep our hopes alive and win we did - by a solitary goal from Taggart who has replaced the injured Maclaren for the tournament.

Match 3: (vs Czech Rep.)

Screenshot_2018-10-12-19-31-18-02.thumb.png.a02c5486d1edca0d9c73cb7ccb9b0f77.png

Czech dominated us and even went ahead via a Schick goal but Taggart pulled level and then neither of the team could find a goal as the match was drawn. Now, our fate was in the other match between Senegal and Argentina.

Screenshot_2018-10-12-19-31-41-00.thumb.png.49a672340ab6a5e478b81f2e0f76c636.png

and, we qualified for the second round with Senegal holding Argentina 1-1 and giving us a lifeline. We had drawn Spain in the second round and of course, our hopes would come to an end now.

Round of 16: (vs Spain)

Screenshot_2018-10-12-20-08-03-20.thumb.png.3e166e2cc8204c8a0c00168da44505f5.png

We put up a good fight frustrating the Spaniards with our ultra defensive game but a late Koke goal in 79' was enough to send them through quarters and dash our hopes. I had zero motivation for the tournament once i found out that Maclaren would be unavailable so considering everything, this was a decent result.

Screenshot_2018-10-12-20-12-38-34.thumb.png.8cb27e37cda4fe61c94f1f55884c8ef3.png

Spain could not repeat their heroics as Italy downed them by 2 goals picking up their 5th title.

Screenshot_2018-10-12-20-12-50-51.thumb.png.17d90b980893280d84ed2b4760a42cfb.png

Mbappe wins the golden boot with 7 goals in the tournament.

Maclaren missed 2 matches out of the 6 that we played post World Cup. So, this year his tally is very low. I am now seriously worried about his long term prospect if he keeps getting injured like this.

I don't know if i have hit a bug or something. Can you guys shed some light?? I have now full motivation to pull the plug on this as if i dont get any matches, how will Maclaren score goals??

You are having terrible luck!! Losing Maclaren for the World Cup through injury and then the Asian Nations Cup bug 😕

Would be sorry to see Maclaren and the Socceroos journey end here.....but understand how de-motivated you must be

Update 6 - 2023 & 2024

So, with the bug hitting us we had to only rely on friendlies.

2023 Friendlies

Some big wins in the friendlies. Beating the Teranga Lions 4-1 and then the mighty France 3-2 even with an out of form Maclaren meant our future was looking bright. Oikonomidis performed exceptionally well against France snatching a brace. The end of year friendly against the same opposition Senegal, was a much tighter affair as we shared the honors 2-2.

The world cup qualifiers were an easy affair and just a chance to get Maclaren up to speed and he did not disappoint, scoring 8 goals in 4 matches including his 10th international hattrick. He missed the last 2 qualifiers due to injuries again.

World Cup Qualifiers - Part 2 (2024)

We wrapped up the first qualifying stage with Maclaren continuing his scoring form notching up another hattrick and 6 goals in 2 matches.

The friendlies were a mixed affair. The win against Ecuador was good while Bosnia's Almir Seferovic, the new hitman for At. Madrid put in a crackling performance to defeat us and then we conceded a late goal to lose against Switzerland.

We were clubbed with the major Middle east nations and North Korea with Iran and Qatar the strongest rivals in the group.  Maclaren played only 2 matches before another 5 month long injury derailed his season. I may have to find a new candidate for my challenge as Maclaren is getting injured almost every 3 months.

So, we have been clubbed in Group F along with Belgium , Chile and Norway. Again not an easy group but you expect that in World Cup.

Just one friendly before the World Cup but what a match:

Screenshot_2018-10-16-15-49-05-55.thumb.png.35fbc2cf0eb7fe32bdd6c3c9f16d4e24.png

Wright and Maclaren combined to down Romania though they hit us with 3 goals. Mitch Wright is our new contender for the 200 goal challenge alongwith Maclaren.

Screenshot_2018-10-17-10-01-30-29.thumb.png.7ca62782dbdae7eb9af5d0ce008d9271.png

An easy win against Chile with Maclaren and Oikonomidis scoring for us.

Match 2: vs Belgium

Screenshot_2018-10-18-09-33-25-56.thumb.png.e531b02ca4587eda9e6e82fc102b5895.png

Once again we crossed paths with Belgium. Wright notched up his first international hattrick but it was not enough as a Gethin Jones own goal created the downfall for us.

Match 3: vs Norway

Screenshot_2018-10-18-09-38-22-15.thumb.png.f477dbf6eac150446a8fdcc35f20e2c2.png

This time we came out on top as a Maclaren brace on either half and goals from Oikonomidis and Wright helped us to win after the Norwegians almost got back to us.

Screenshot_2018-10-18-09-38-59-75.thumb.png.551ac5d4aa781e1509e6e84c82d1ed95.png

Screenshot_2018-10-18-09-51-45-04.thumb.png.00edd9f48d6da33a7f8b03c9d62ad3cd.png

A very tight match where we had to rely on the lottery of penalties to proceed.

Quarter Final: vs Portugal

Screenshot_2018-10-18-10-02-40-69.thumb.png.3028b1d5aa08c618b042bc004e31aa10.png

Wright on fire. He smashes his 2nd international hattrick and first in world cup as we edge out Portugal despite Jota's heroics.

Semi Final: vs Italy

Screenshot_2018-10-20-09-35-13-17.thumb.png.75c34f816f51458a58ea3b28d9afdf6d.png

And our run continues as the mighty Italians fell prey to our counter-attacking game and now the Socceroos are in the final. What a run!!!

Final: vs Spain

Screenshot_2018-10-20-10-06-12-61.thumb.png.0f69a7d86a34e16d09270c8218dc56ea.png

Unfortunately, our run ended as we couldn't cope up with the tiki-taka of Spain and the 33 year old Alvaro Morata who hit 4. Our front two combined for three goals but it wasn't enough.

Still our first ever appearance in the World Cup finals call for celebration. Proud of the mighty Socceroos.
