Introduction and Transfers

Welcome to my first save of FMM19.

So what will I be doing? Well as you may have guessed from the graphic I will be managing Roma in Serie A and if you have excellent knowledge of French football you will know that the player is Nicolas Pepe who will be involved in this save.

This will actually be a team challenge though so it won’t focus on one individual player. The challenge I am taking on is a new one that has been created by @Ashez with a tiny bit of input from myself.

The Challenge

In this one season save I will be building a new squad of players who all speak the same language, in my case French is my chosen language. This means that I can sign any player who comes from a nation with French as an official language so for example France, Switzerland, Belgium and Cameroon are all available to me. I have used this page on Wikipedia as my guide as to which nationalities I could sign.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_territorial_entities_where_French_is_an_official_language

That gives me 28 different nations to build my squad from because as far as I know there are no players with Monaco as there nationality. I should just say that this is a players first nationality so I can’t go picking players based on a 2nd nation.

Points

·        League points

·        Goal difference

·        3 pts for each round of the Copa Italia and Champions League I pass.

·        1 point for each different nationality that plays at least 1 game.

Transfers

Hopefully that all makes sense so lets take a look at the transfers I made.

The first job was to pick the leagues I would load.

·        Italy obviously as I will be managing Roma

·        France: Ligue 1 and 2 so that I got plenty of both Frenchman but also the large number of Africans that play in France.

·        Belgium: Should get some got Belgians and again Africans.

·        MLS: This should give me access to Africans as well as Canadians and French Caribbean players.

The first job was to offer everyone already at the club out so that I could bring in the cash to rebuild the team as the £30m I was given by the club just wasn’t going to cut it. I never managed to get rid of everybody but I managed to bring in £196m to build myself a healthy war chest.

As players were leaving I was bringing more in which can get confusing at times as anyone who has done complete squad rebuilds will know but I love the new transfer system in 19 and it did make it more streamlined and easier.

I’m not going to pick out every player that I bought but I will separate them into positions and look at my favourite from each section of the pitch whilst posting everyone else under a spoiler if you wish to take a look.

Goalkeeper

I initially brought in the Swiss ‘keeper Diego Benaglio as at 34 for was a very good cheap option but then towards the end of the build I had the money to bring in another number 1. I went for the Belgian Simon Mignolet as my No 1 man between the sticks as although he isn’t perfect he is a decent shot stopper and with the money I have available one of the best options I could get. He will also have a world class defence in front of him to protect him.

Defence

OK when I said Simon had a world class defence in front of him I may have been lying a little! I focused on getting players that wouldn’t cost a fortune and had good numbers in the key areas for a CB those being Tackling, Aerial, Positioning and I wanted them to not be too slow. I felt I didn’t get the best FB’s in but they had a bit of pace about them and would have to do.

The defender I will pick out is Nicolas Isimat-Mirin. He is a classic example of what I said above as he will never make a good BPD but he has everything needed and at £7m from PSV looks a real bargain to me.

Central Midfield

I kept Steven N’Zonzi as he was already at the club and fitted the bill of what I wanted in my midfield which is big, strong, box to box players. My most expensive signing was Lucas Tousart who would play the holding role and came in for just shy of £30m and I also brought in Mousa Dembele from Spurs but they weren't my favourite CM. That honour went to Gelson Fernandes who only cost £1.7m from Eintract Frankfurt but fitted the model of midfielder perfectly and was a steal at the price.

Attacking Midfield

I ended going with all left footers for the wide roles with 2 wingers and two inside forwards to provide a goal threat. Ibrahima Traore will be my 1st choice LW as he has good pace and can dribble and cross. On the right I have the aforementioned Nicolas Pepe and Knockaert who joined from Brighton. I expect Pepe will be my first choice though.

Strikers

Just two strikers brought in as Pepe can be a back up there if needed. I went for strength, pace and aerial ability with my two guys. Sebastien Haller is a player I am familiar with having used him last year to good effect and Mbokani will be a decent enough back up who is in a similar mould to the younger French man.

In total I spent £199m on my players with the most expensive being Tousart and the cheapest was Hugo Baque my 3rd GK who was only £7k. You might think £199m sounds a lot of money but when you are buying 24 players for that amount it only works out at £8.2m a player on average and as we all know £8m doesn’t get you much in modern football. Saying that I’m happy with my rag tag bunch of Francophones and it will make any success all the more sweeter by doing it without any true worldies if I get any success that is.

Nations Breakdown

As I said above I get a point for every player from a unique nation that plays at least one game so at the moment I provisionally have 9 points from that so long as they all play at least once. I hope to add a few more nations in January as well.

That concludes the intro.

So what do you think of my team and do you think they stand a chance of fighting for honours?

Cheers lads

I think the team will succeed but with the leaky defences nowadays you will concede tons. Nicholas Pepe and Haller are going to be the breakout stars of the Serie A.

A wonderful write-up as ever, but what I do love is the thought that has gone in to the players you’ve chosen. Best of luck - I’m sure you’ll nail it.

Nice mix of players there. Nice easy challenge to follow too, although I’m guessing it will be rather difficult. I’m certain I used Isimat-Mirin last year in the CC I think? May have been Vibe World Cup though. Good luck Foxy!

I have been hearing a lot about high numbers of goals conceded so I am looking forward to seeing how I get on at the back with a bunch of defenders that mostly have the right attributes but aren't top class by any stretch of the imagination.

Cheers HandsomeRob! I hope that the near 2 hours of searching for players and doing transfers pays off.

Part 2 – August to January

In the first instalment I took you through the challenge I was doing and the players I have bought so please check it out if you haven’t already.

Right lets get straight into the action as we take the save from August to the beginning of January.

August

900622788_Photo04-11-2018163842.thumb.jpg.c95121b2301ee46795d928a89c100d2b.jpg

Two relatively simple games to start the season and two straight forward wins meant I ended August fairly positive about us as a team.

September

This is were the season really begins as we have a full month of game to get stuck into. It doesn’t get any bigger then taking on Juve and that is exactly what we did in our 4th game of the season.

IMG_0164.thumb.PNG.eaa0aecc05591f2b54ffb089e79cb4e4.PNG Wha

What a brilliant result! I never expected that and when you look at the game stats it could be argued we never deserved it but we made the most of the chances we had and goals win games.

Only two games later we had another tough trip as we visited Napoli.

IMG_0165.thumb.PNG.ddaf0e90296e36c85825694b33cdbb71.PNG

This time we were absolutely out classed by Napoli as they simply blew us away.

1124458953_Photo04-11-2018163918.thumb.jpg.bb756883fa825858dd441ef2adfdb717.jpg

We dropped our first points before the Juve game but despite that and the Napoli game we had a decent month as we won our first Champions League game and then had two routine league wins

The team seems to be shaping up nicely but that Napoli game proves this season is going to be all sweetness and light.

October

Two really tough games at the start and finish of October and we lost them both 😣

1242799734_Photo04-11-2018163943.thumb.jpg.63b33e6b4d75a631532bfc514c7ac2fc.jpg

We are shaping up as a team that can easily beat the smaller teams as we should considering the squad cost £199M to assemble but in the bigger games we struggle. We did bounce back in the Champions League to smash Lyon 3-0 which leaves us looking good for at least 2nd place in our group.IMG_0166.thumb.PNG.f34a55e30d75151763122a7b7a3650c0.PNG

November

November looked like a straight forward month for us as we didn’t have any big opponents but it was also going to be make or break in the Champions League but a draw versus Lyon and a win over BATE means we go into December with a chance to top the group if we beat Barcelona.

152032270_Photo04-11-2018164001.thumb.jpg.b7c535391e1a3884c6b0172fcd3e8ba9.jpg

This game versus Bologna was pretty typical of how we have done this season so far as we didn’t create massive amounts of chances but we were clinical with the ones we had. Pepe and Haller seem to be forming a good partnership as well.

IMG_0167.thumb.PNG.6ef417f05354b4ded26a626e4299415e.PNG

December

The final month of the update and it was a busy one with 7 games to play.

We started the month against AC Milan and we played out an entertaining 3-3 draw. It was a frustrating game though as we had a 2-0 lead which we threw away and then we needed a Nzonzi goal to get us a draw.

IMG_0168.thumb.PNG.2d4cab755a222531bc69e60c8091b1db.PNG

We had a chance of topping our Champions League group if we could beat Barcelona.

This has to be our best win to date as we took a 5-0 lead into half time and although we conceded two late goals we still ended up topping the group.

IMG_0169.thumb.PNG.03902df9791e81ff9dc45ebcb186a068.PNG

1072383342_Photo04-11-2018165247.thumb.jpg.22a74da4d168376770412e3a2279d86e.jpg

Maybe I could have thrown away the group and tried to get third place to go into the easier Europa League but that isn’t really my style. I would rather see how far I can get in the Champions League then the Europa. In the next round we take on Liverpool.

On boxing day we took on Lazio in the Rome derby and its fair to say we sent our fans home happy as we crushed them 3-0 with us again proving how clinical we are compared to other teams which statistically out play us.

IMG_0170.thumb.PNG.acab5d5c8d611fbef01e32db6fcaa3e7.PNG

2049704890_Photo04-11-2018164022.thumb.jpg.19f30edb2d958c97dee8390a602826ad.jpg

This leaves the league table looking like this with half the season still to play.

1476701830_Photo04-11-2018085612.thumb.png.430d747ed20bc454a58bd39008cb7806.png

A six point lead is not what I expected at this stage of the season and it bodes well for the rest of the season. The Champions League is going to be tough with Liverpool in the next round and we also have the Italian Cup starting straight after the winter break so it really is all to play for in the 3rd and final part.#

I hope you will all join me on Saturday when we will see how I finished the season but in the mean time any comments are massively appreciated.

Cheers lads

What has pleased me most is that we are pretty strong at the back most of the time. We have had a few dodgy moments of course but on the whole considering the defenders I have aren’t top notch I am pleased especially as I here a lot of talk about goals conceded so far with the game.

Awesome idea for a career. Always enjoyed such limits.

Did the very same but with "hispanohablantes" in La Liga. It was pretty fun :)

Btw notice Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. Though French is not an official language there, the vast majority speaks it on a very high level.

Wish you good luck!

Part 3 – January to May

Welcome to the third and final part of my first FMM19 challenge.

When we last meet I had got the season up to the 1st of Jan and we were sitting pretty at the top of the table and had a Coppa Italia 1st round tie versus Sampdoria and a Champions League 1st knockout round against Liverpool to look forward to.

Here the current league table.

Spoiler

In January I decide to try and bring in some more players of different nationalities for a few more bonus points. The MLS contracts tend to expire in December/January time so I offered a few players deals and managed to get in two more lads. It should have been five more but three of the transfers never went through possibly because there contracts expired after the Italian transfer window had shut.

Neither of these guys will play many more then 1 game for me just to get the points but this was who I got.

Spoiler

This means I will have used 11 different nationalities in this season giving me 11 bonus points.

January

Our first game back after the winter break was a cup game versus Sampdoria and clearly my guys had enjoyed the break a little too much as we crashed out the cup at the first hurdle. It was an even game as many have been so far this season and we came out the worst of it.

This is a blow to our final score as every cup round we negotiate is an extra 3 points on my challenge score and as I don’t expect much in the Champions League I was banking on a good cup run.

Only three games in January but two loses was not the way to resume this save!

February

The Champions League returned this month and a tough trip to Anfield brought another defeat. I would have loved an away goal but 1-0 wasn’t the end of the world considering we got dominated and with the home leg to come were we would blitz them.

1782092803_Photo04-11-2018165817.thumb.png.283ab6f93c74fd6b40386bed4d82d672.png

In the league we got over the Cagliari defeat with three straight wins including a 3-0 revenge job on Napoli and another win over The Old Lady as we came from 2-1 down to win 3-2.

We did end the month with a stodgy 0-0 against Sassuolo which took the gloss of the month a little.

2142745403_Photo04-11-2018164202.thumb.jpg.5cce6175cac013153fe2d599db8a8d4f.jpg

March

The biggest game this month was the return leg versus Liverpool as we looked to overturn a 1-0 deficit and progress.

971410360_Photo04-11-2018165827.thumb.png.5f6fe818ce3ce2d53f1a39f3b4764034.png

Nope we crash out in an even game although Liverpool had 2 CCC to our none. I never expected huge success in the Champions League and Liverpool was a tough ask but it was still gutting to get knocked out this early.

This means we just have the league left to win and wins over Genoa, Chievo and Frosinone kept us on track until we met Inter at the end of the month…

Another league defeat over one of the big boys and not just that we really didn’t play well.

April

We are really into the business end of the season now.

We took on Torino in a tough game as they were challenging for a Champions League spot at the start of the month but we made it back to back 1-0 loses.

We bounced back with wins over Empoli and Bologna before we took on Milan at the Stadio Olimpico

We dominated but just couldn’t create that CCC that would win us the game.

Worse was to come in the next game as we crashed to defeat at Atalanta and we thoroughly deserved to lose it as well.

So a mixed month left us 4 points clear at the top of the table over Torino with their city rivals Juve a further point back with just four matches left to play.

May

This is the four games we had left and our fate was firmly in our own hands as three wins would see us crowned champions. The penultimate game against Lazio sticks out for me.

We started off on the run in by taking on our cup conquerors Sampdoria.

The perfect revenge as we take another step closer to the title.

Next up was an away trip and a win here could mean we would go into the Rome derby with a chance of winning the league.

No issues and that leaves us on the brink of the title.

We beat Lazio and we are Champions and it won’t matter what Juventus do in an easy game versus Frosione.

At half time Juventus were winning and had cut our lead at the top to 3 points and we only had 1 goal advantage in the goal difference.

A time for heroes….

Spoiler

A fine second half sees us get the job done as Haller and then Fernandes get the game and the title wrapped up.

We had one last game to play and we had a routine 4-0 win over Parma to sign off in style.

Only 25 goals conceded in 38 games with the defender I have I think proves that defences aren’t broke on this game.

Our final challenge points work out like this.

·        League: 88 pts

·        GD: +52

·        Cup first round exit: 0 pts

·        Champions League 1st knockout round exit: 3 pts

·        11 nations: 11 pts

Total: 143 pts

Crashing out the cup in the first round was the biggest disappointment in this season for me and the champions league as well but success in that competition would have been tricky against the calibre of teams in that. Winning the league was awesome and although we lost more games than I would have wanted we still did it in some style considering the squad I had. Add to that the fact we only conceded 35 goals in 47 games with the limited defenders we had was a huge plus for me as well.

Above all that though was the fact I got to use some players I never would have done in normal circumstances and that was what I wanted. I love squad building and hunting out that player that overall might look bobbins but in the context of the challenge I have set could really do a good job.

In the intro I said that I spent on average £8.2m per player in my squad. That kind of money buys you nothing yet I built a squad that won Serie A and that makes me so damned happy 😀

Thank you to everyone who has read this short career and an even bigger thank you to those of you who have commented. I will leave you with the song that inspired the team to the title and the name of this career.

Cheers lads

Brilliant! I loved that writeup - had me on the edge of my seat. I love how you purchased players for your formation, who aren't necessarily the best overall. That should be a lesson to those on here constantly begging for tactics.  And you beat Lazio too - to quote Punch and Judy: 'that's the way to do it.'

Enjoyed the read as well as the challenge. Well done, Fox, building a top-league title-winning squad with no more than 10M/player is simply amazing. Congrats!!

Great write up that had me as anxious and excited as you about the derby result!

Finding new and different players is hugely satisfying as you said.

Well done @Foxy
