Chat Cannot promote from reserves

Anyone else have this happen? I was able to do it in season one and in season two. I'm now in season three and cannot promote anyone from my reserves. I have demoted five players from the first team in case that was too full. But still no joy.

Are they players out on loan by any chance?

No. All of the ones I’m trying to promote were still at the club. After it went to January transfer window, two players were sold and suddenly the issue had disappeared. Both these players had been demoted to make room in first team. Weird.
