Career Middlesbrough 4-in-1 Academy Challenge COMPLETE

Hi all, as a fan of Middlesbrough I wanted to do a challenge involving them this year.  A very brief history; in 1986 Steve Gibson saved the club from going under, he has subsequently funded massive signings such as Boksic, Ravanelli, Juninho, Emerson, Merson, Gascoigne, Mendieta, Ince, Zenden, Boateng, Ehiogu, Southgate, Viduka, Hasselbaink, Yakubu.  I could go on.  However the one thing he has also valued is the youth academy and over the years the club has produced some quality talent and the latest crop looks to be very exciting.

It was Steve Gibson’s dream to have a team full of local lads from the academy make up a side and on 7^th May 2006 Steve McLaren named a squad of 16 of which Malcolm Christie was the only player born outside a 30 mile radius of the club.  The side had an average age of 20.  The main reason this squad was named was to rest the players due to play in the UEFA Cup Final a few days later, but still some feat and one the clubs is proud of.

Therefore my challenge is going to involve 5 of the most promising youngsters currently at the club:

·         Nathan Wood (defender – son of Dean Gordon the full back)

·         Lewis Wing (midfielder who was on Boro’s books as a kid then went to play non-league and was then re-signed by the club)

·         Stephen Walker (promising attacker plays for England youth sides and has had a handful of first team appearances this season)

·         Harry Chapman (attacking midfielder who has enjoyed some loan spells away but has suffered with injury so is yet to really make his breakthrough into the first team)

·         Marcus Tavernier (attacking midfielder of immense promise and has been in and around the first team for a year or so)

 

The challenges I am going to tackle are:

·         Stephen Walker, Harry Chapman, Marcus Tavernier - TT goal challenge

·         Lewis Wing – Assists Challenge

·         Nathan Wood, Lewis Wing, Marcus Tavernier – TT Assists Challenge (51 assists by defender/162 assists by midfielder/102 assists by forward)

·         You can’t win anything with kids challenge (I’m sure I’ve seen this before but can’t locate it so not sure if still valid?  If not maybe this could become a challenge in its own right; win the league, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup using purely academy players)

 

As mentioned above with the mantra of Steve Gibson in mind I am going to attempt this by only using my academy players.  This will take a few seasons to weed out the other players which I will only use if absolutely necessary but after 2-3 seasons I hope to have a complete squad born from the academy.  

I doubt I’ll be breaking many records with this challenge, it is more a personal goal, but hopefully keep you guys interested and get a few scores on the leaderboards.

Season 1

First couple of things to do was to re-train Wood to right back and Chapman and Tav to forwards. I also had a juggle about with coaches and training to try and benefit my players abilities.

Team Performance

Very up and down, which was to be expected playing some very inexperienced players. Came through to win the league though and have two very good cup runs.

Only just beaten in the FA Cup final, had one of the kindest runs to a cup final i have ever seen!  I was hoping this would get me into Europe as Spurs finished second but i have just started the next season and it doesn't appear to be the case.

Obviously no-one in, and shifted a few out.

 

Challenges

Seeing as he only just turned 16 at the start i am pleased enough with this. A few discipline and fitness issues but 5 assists in the bank. Now comfortable at right back so the idea is to turn him into the Boro Cafu!

Great season from my playmaker, 14 goals and 23 assists. Stats are looking great too, would just like to bump those physicals but he is the oldest player in this challenge so not an easy thing to do.

My brightest hope hitting 40 goals and 21 assists. He's reluctant to re-train as a striker but he has been playing up there regardless and i will keep trying.

Chapman i was hoping for slightly better but still 38 goals and 13 assists to start us off. Re-trained as a striker straight away so just working on getting that shooting stat up.

This guy i really struggled with so was happy to get 21 goals out of him. I'm hoping with some more experience and training he can develop further. Still very young. One benefit was his stamina was good from day one so managed to get 55 games from him (bookmarked him for a future 1k).

Assists Challenge: 23 from Lewis Wing

Cracking on now with second season, board want mid-table, i'm aiming for top 8 with plenty of goals and a few cup runs. Fingers crossed.

Season 2

Team Performance

Unfortunately no European football as hoped so limited games.  Very inconsistent, scored plenty but conceded way too many.

Crucial last two wins saw me clinch 7th place and a European spot to give me those vital extra games next season.

Unlucky in the FA Cup, had a last minute winner disallowed then gubbed in extra time.

Transfers

Four new academy graduates, of which Dion Robinson looks a great prospect. Screenshots taken at end of season but in future will take them at the start as soon as they graduate.

Few more shifted out.

Other Players

In the first season i had some quality players out on loan who i couldn't recall so was nice to bring them into the fold. These guys have all gone straight into the first team squad.

Connor Ripley (son of Stuart) straight back in as my first choice keeper following a loan at Acrrington Stanley.

 

Challenges

Developing nicely and 13 assists is a much better return.

Great season with 25 assists.

36 goals but only 10 assists from Tav. This injury at the start of the season seemed to take longer than expected to get over. Still reluctant to re-train as a striker but i keep trying.

A steady 22 goals and 9 assists from Chapman. I cannot seem to get that shooting attribute above 10 no matter how much he focuses on it.

Better season from Walker with 23 goals and 12 assists.

The totals were enough for the lads to get 1,2,3 in the top goalscorer chart for the league.

 

All in all i'm reasonably happy considering the lack of games and the inexperience of my squad. I'm hopeful of a few nice easy qualifying rounds in Europe next season to get the TT total over 100.

Assists Challenge: 48 from Lewis Wing

From my squad appearances Howson was the highest non-academy player with 17 and as you can see there is limited input from the rest. The aim is to start next season with a whole academy based squad.

Season 3

Team Performance

I currently have the attacking aspect nailed, however my defence is absymal and i concede way too many goals. I will have to have a look at tweaking in season 4 as i don't think i'll challenge for the league carrying on like this. 

Good enough to finish 7th and get into Europe again but like is say that goals against column needs sorting. These 3 games came in the space of a few weeks.

Also had to include this, the first time my keeper has scored for me going up late in the game for a corner. Unfortunately we lost the second leg.

Plenty of awards.

Number 1 and 3 in Europa League Player of the Season.

Chapman and Tavernier both in the World Best XI.

 

Transfers

Three academy recruits, who look decent prospects, particularly the two midfielders. 

 

Challenges

Little drop in assists but still happy with ten.

Not too happy with this, played ten more games but less assists, however i think i know why and will look to rectify next season.

50 goals, fantastic return, plus a call up to the England squad.

Steady from Chapman, pretty consistent looking at this rating the last three seasons.

This guy is fantastic for getting time on the pitch and with a combined 63 goals and assists that's a decent return.

 

Massive help in having those extra Europa League games ands our best return to date. My only concern is improving my defence without taking too much away from the attack.

Assists Challenge: 66 from Lewis Wing

The only non-academy player now featuring is Marvin Johnson who to be fair played well. However i have sold him in the off season so from season 4 onward we are totally made up from academy based players.

Season 4

Team Performance

Again plagued by inconsistency, but to be expected with a constant stream of young players filling the squad up and the senior pro's probably not at the elite level required. Conceding goals still a major problem. However at one point i was sitting pretty in second but end of Jan the wheels came off a bit.

Cleaned up most awards.

Both Chapman and Tav in World Best again.

Closest i have come yet to winning a cup. I hate Origi, he was my nemesis last year and again this year.

 

Transfers

Four new recruits this season, of which i hope a couple will go on to be first teamers. Theo Thacker has good reports from the coaches.

 

Challenges

Equaled a season best of 13 assists for Nathan Wood and he will smash his target.

Another 18 assists for Wing, not as many as i want but takes him pretty much half way to his target.

Another great season.

Consistent again.

Again plenty of games and better goal return for Walker this season.

 

So in summary my aim is to get 120ish goals a season and we are on track with that, but i'm not getting anywhere in the league (7th for last 3 seasons) and no major trophies yet. I need to find that balance between keeping my attack producing but tightening up at the back, and without being able to go and purchase better players it isn't easy.

Season 5

Team Performance

So, i had a terrible start to the season and these two results prompted me to try and change and as few players were losing faith.  Although great for my scoring challenge, no good in the long term when trying to win trophies etc. Tightened up a little bit and managed to just qualify for CL. Also got to two finals and a semi final.

Stunning two legs in the Europa, just couldn't find that extra goal i needed.

Chelsea did me in the League and FA Cups, thrashed in the FA Cup unfortunately.

Awards again.

Choules and Campbell look to be the pick of the bunch this year.

Challenges

Another 13 assists.

Better return from Wing so will look to build on that.

All 3 forwards very similar totals this season, down to a tactical shift mainly.  Lucky to only suffer the odd injury here and there, nothing major.

 

Season of progress i would say and still hitting my goals target. Be good to have a crack at the Champions League next season.

Team Performance

Finally some serious success this season, however it came at a cost. In changing my tactics to a more stable, efficient setup i have been able to win the league and get to the later rounds of all other competitions. However i had a really poor season scoring wise for the challenge. I need to do a lot of thinking before deciding how i approach season 7. Fixtures and manager profile etc in the spoiler.

Assists way down as he had to play at CB for 6 months as Dael Fry broke his leg.

Frustrating season, i know i can get these guys scoring more but it seems to come at the cost of results. Yet to find a happy medium. Chapman particulary poor.

I have included their stats page this time so you can see how they're looking as they come into their prime. Not working with diamonds here so just trying to squeeze what i can out of them.

Nathan Wood - Should be a CB but i play him WB for the assist challenge. Capped by England and is a solid prem player without been spectacular. Another 13 assists in the bank this season.

Lewis Wing - the oldest of the contingent, has enjoyed one of his best seasons now i have tweaked my tactic. Should pass the assists target next season. No England cap unfortunately.

Harry Chapman - really not progressed how i would like. some of his stats i just can't seem to improve. Only 15 goals this season.

Stephen Walker - for some reason scores plenty more than Chapman despite been similar ability-wise. Think i have mentioned before i have earmarked him for a future 1K.

Marcus Tavernier - the star of the show. Best return yet as a CF and England regular.

Now I've settled on a tactic which seems to get me results but it is largely built around Tav as a CF with Chapman and Walker chipping in as IF's either side. He therefore scores the bulk of my goals. Just hit the half way mark so i am going to need these guys to play until their mid 30's to have a chance with the TT goal challenge. The good thing is they seem to play most games, i have been lucky with injuries and towards the end of the season i tend to sub them off at half time if they have scored to keep them fresh for the next game.

TT Goal Challenge: 57+39+15 = 111          752/1500

Assists Challenge: 154 from Lewis Wing

The one trophy that had alluded me so far was the CL, i had been close before but couldn't quite get over the line.

Bit of a sticky patch around January but a great season overall and i finally managed to get my hands on the coveted CL!

I thought i had blown it in the semi, from 3-0 up i was 3-3 and going out on away goals until Chapman got an 85th minute winner!

Final was reasonably comfortable.

Just my academy influx, usually send them out on loan and see how they develop. Otis Jordan was one my coaches said could be a star.

Really enjoying the England experience. Using a lot of my club players and of course my TT players were straight in. The fixtures list missed the early fixtures (i will have to screenshot at end of calendar year i presume) but i qualified for the Nations League semi and got through to win the final! Hope to hold onto this job long term and use it to my advantage with developing my players and contributing to the challenges set.

For the record these are my TT players as i got the international job. Tav had 9 goals, Walker and Chapman yet to be capped.

And this is them at the end of the season. 14 goals for Tav, 5 for Walker and 2 for Chapman so a nice 21 goals towards the TT challenge.

Great season from Wing, 34 assists.

Tav excellent again.

Much better from Walker this season.

Slight improvement from Chapman.

Season 11

We left last season prior to a second round game against Denmark in the Euro's so this is how the rest of the tournament played out.

Winners!! We also won the Nations League at the end of the season too.

Last season Tav finished on 35, Walker on 10 and Chapman on 11 INT goals.  They finished this season on 57, 17 and 13 respectively giving a total of 31 INT goals.

 

Challenges

105 goals from Tav including international. We're really carrying Chapman but at least he keeps chipping in. Wing declining now and playing less but still trying to squeeze as much as poss out of him. Now Wood has completed the challenge he has been alternating between CB and WB so that's why there are less for him.

Last season Tav finished on 57, Walker on 17 and Chapman on 13 INT goals.  They finished this season on 80, 28 and 17 respectively giving a total of 38 INT goals.

102 goals this season from Tav including international. Chapman improved slightly but Wing had an injury hit season, if i can get him to 300 assists i will be happy.

World Cup win!

Unfortunately lost the Nations League at the end of the season.  Had to rest Tav in this game as he was only 80% and we had a friendly against Zambia just after which i wanted him fit for and i thought i would have enough to win.  On the plus side he scored all 4 against Zambia.

Again i'm sorry i missed the back end of 2030, i keep forgetting to screenshot after the November games.

Last season Tav finished on 80, Walker on 28 and Chapman on 17 INT goals.  They finished this season on 101, 34 and 23 respectively giving a total of 33 INT goals.

Challenges

A monster 114 goals this season from Tav including international (at one point i thought he may get the ton for club goals but wasn't quite there).  I tweaked the tactic a little as you can see by the drop in appearances and goals from Walker and Chapman and it seemed to squeeze a few more out of him. Wood played mainly at CB and Wing had a better season and is approaching his last one before retirement.

TT Goal Challenge: 93+16+19= 128 + 33 INT goals = 161          1662/1500    (COMPLETE)

Assists Challenge: 297 from Lewis Wing

Really in the final furlong of these challenges now.  Lewis Wing retires this season so this will be the last update for the assists challenge and the TT assists, however the TT goal challenge stills rolls on to try and set as high a score as possible and i am trying to get Tavernier to 1000 goals as well.

Team is flying now and so nearly got a +100 goal difference this season.

Nothing much to report from England, just qualifiers and as you can see i am just in the middle of the 2032 EURO's when the season finished so i will conclude that next time.  Some really nice fixtures and to be honest i was hoping to bang in some more goals than i did.

Last season Tav finished on 101, Walker on 34 and Chapman on 23 INT goals.  They finished this season on 119, 43 and 25 respectively giving a total of 29 INT goals.

 

Challenges

This will be the last screenshot of Wood as it's my last entry into the TT assists because Lewis Wing is retiring. Used him mainly as a CB in recent seasons.

Got Wing to 300 assists but as you can see from his profile he is ready for retirement!

Tav was out for a few months which is his worst injury to date so played less games, but looking at his goal ratio it is actually his most prolific so i still hold a bit of hope i can get 100 club goals in a season.

Walker and Chapman really stepped up to the plate when Tav was out and scored more than recent seasons.  40 more goals until the 1K and with any luck he will have that wrapped up in no time. Maybe i can get him to 1000 club goals too which would be nice.

Season 15

Two seasons to go until Chapman retires so this will soon be wrapped up.

Unfortunately lost the Nations League.

A significant decline across the board. Understandable when you see their age and stats shown in the international section.
