Match Day 35 and 36

Today’s update is a bit of the calm before tomorrow’s storm as we have our League Cup Final versus Man City tomorrow. Saying that we have an FA Cup tie against Crystal Palace which of course is important and then we have a league game against Newcastle as we look to stay top of the Prem.

Match Day 35 versus Crystal Palace Away

Martial is proving to be a good steal for us as he seems to have taken the mantle of team goal-machine from Hazard although he was a little keen a couple of times in this game and had 2 disallowed. Palace were clinical with there chances in this game and pushed us to the end but we deserved to go through.

A one goal win suited me as Palace don’t have an abundance of players I want but the steal of Justin Kluivert isn’t bad although as he was on loan from Roma his parent club might not be happy when they hear Palace lost him to us.

Match Day 36 versus Newcastle Away

Martial kept up his goal scoring form with a hat trick as we gave @Woody boys one hell of a thrashing!

Tony now has 10 goals in 7 games for us and this is from FR and not as an out and out striker. The first half was one of those crazy FMM games where everything goes in and it was 4-3 at HT before we ran away with it in the 2nd half.

7FB5CFD7-EF88-4F18-9A38-3205B13CB45E.thumb.png.52ad1c65fa9377d747d4f4296ca3fe5b.png

Its very nice to score 7 but it was handy the Mags got 3 A’s it meant just the 4 players coming our way. We got some decent players including Shelvey and Rondon but again they won’t be first XI standard at the moment. We also took Matt Ritchie (lacks pace) and Yedlin (has pace but lacks else were) as well.

These 4 filled both squads and I have started releasing players in the reserves that were at the club at the start of the save!

We stay 3 points clear at the top now but for the first time this season we have the best GD in the league which is something I always take as a really good sign.

Tomorrow’s Update is the big one as we take on Man City in the League Cup final looking for our first piece of silverware so wish me luck or not if you don’t want me to win!

Typical Newcastle that result!!!

Basically you have pinched our best 4 players and they are still pants 😂

Good luck for the final mate.

I still have Manquillo somewhere in the reserves as well although I don’t think you were too disappointed when I took him!

Carabao Cup Final

We are well in with a chance of winning a treble this season and that attempt starts today as we take on Manchester City in the League Cup final. It would be a daunting  prospect but we have an excellent team and well of a match for Man City or at least going forward.

Man City: Road to the Final

  • Round 3: Watford 4-3
  • Round 4: Liverpool 2-1
  •  Quarter Final: Man Utd 2-1
  • Semi Final: Huddersfield 6-1

Bournemouth: Road to the Final

  • Round 2: Peterborough 3-1
  • Round 3: Chelsea 3-0
  • Round 4: Fulham 3-0
  • Quarter Final: Everton p3-3
  • Semi Final: Middlesbrough 6-3

Both clubs had some good results on the way to the final but despite playing a game less it could be said that Man City had the trickier route with Liverpool and Man Utd needing to be beaten on the way.

Bournemouth go into the game 11 points clear of 3rd placed Man City and on a run of 18 games unbeaten whilst Man City come into the final on the back of being knocked out of the Champions League by Borussia Dortmund.

The Match

The game was an entertaining affair as the attacking players on both sides lived up to there billing and put on a show in front of a packed Wembley.

Eden Hazard gave The Cherries the lead but it was short lived as Gabriel Jesus equalised 14 minutes later. As the game wore on both sides had chances to win it although it was Bournemouth who created the most. In the end it was going to take extra time to decide this.

In the 98th minute Zaha drifted in from the left and fired in from the edge of the area to make it 2-1 and it looked like Bournemouth could be on there way to a first ever major honour. Jesus has other ideas though and just 3 minutes later he too fired home from the edge of the box and the game was going to the lottery of penalties.

It was actually the Citizens goal scoring hero who blinked first as he fired his penalty straight at Randolph and when Jonjo Shelvey scored Bournemouth’s 4th spot kick it was up to Sané to keep City in the game.

The German winger bottled it and Bournemouth had won the cup 🏆

4B9438E3-4A03-45C7-A7E8-F624D6B9B00C.thumb.png.87dd3d933e303e1a689aefec07aa3eff.png

Once the trophy had been given out and the lap of honours completed the business of player exchanges could take place and as it was a draw both teams top performers would be swapping clubs.

444603C6-9A53-4872-B416-8AD836E94634.thumb.png.f2fdc9f22e93401077783f5a90e62381.png

No surprise that after his brace Gabriel Jesus was Man City’s top rated player despite his penalty miss and will be heading to Bournemouth along with the trophy but which poor sap needs to join the losers?

We had 6 players including Zaha who was subbed that scored 8’s so it came down to season AvR and I was sure it would be the end of the road for Hazard who we have kept far longer than I expected. What I had forgotten was the goal scoring form of Martial in the last few games and with a 9.04 AvR it was him that would head to Manchester. Hopefully he hadn’t sold his house up there when he left Man Utd!

Let’s be honest that is pretty much a straight swap!

The most important thing is we have the trophy in the cabinet and I can wish @samhardy a very merry Christmas.

Match Days 38 and 39

Following yesterday’s excitement of winning a trophy it is back to league action today as we look to consolidate our position at the top of the table. This update also contains my favourite moment of this save so far.

Match Day 38 versus Cardiff @ Home

I had to make a few changes to the team as there was a lot of tired legs in the team after the cup final but we have a deep squad now and we still came out with a comfortable win. The Sterling injury was just for 10 days so not a biggie.

71C84FE3-D217-4CC6-BD38-9F14BD50BF76.thumb.png.588b57301afac9f0667893406523f0c4.png

Back in January I released a few players from the reserves to make room for new players being stolen, these were mostly youngsters but also a few older original members of the squad. One of those players was Harry Arter who was on loan at Cardiff so I made that deal permanent using the editor and another player was winger Marc Pugh.

I suspect you have guessed where I’m going with this!

71F76099-8CAC-4FA2-A69B-F0FC674D9656.thumb.png.5d03d5542091a935c396e53d23dbbb46.png

Thats right Marc Pugh went to Cardiff and alongside Arter had a good game against me and clearly they are both enjoying life in South Wales as they have the highest AvR.

Thats right I won back 2 players that I had got rid of to make room in the squad 😂

I love this save!

This made me chuckle as well as I got my board appraisal and apparently they are happy but also concerned about my transfer strategy!

Match Day 39 versus Leicester Away

We have been pretty lucky so far with sendings off this season but this game was made tougher as Ben Gibson got sent off. I remember discussing how I approach going down to 10 men with this Gegenpressing tactic with @Ashez when we developed it so I will show you here.

10EBEB5B-A14F-406E-9C66-BEE557345F83.thumb.jpeg.79d3c2f2b6cd84769ac99e1f4606cd99.jpeg

We actually had different approach’s and mine is to remove the LW as although it adds more work load to the LWB I feel it keeps me solid in the centre of the pitch still. The rest of the TI’s remain exactly the same.

On this occasion the approach worked as we ran out 2-1 winners in a bit of a bore fest. I feel although we lose an important part of the attacking threat with the LW gone at least we keep the spine of the team together and that then in turn gives us a chance to win.

No players I had released to take today and it was one of Leicester’s title winning side that came to us as Danny Simpson made the switch. He is a decentish RB but I doubt he will see much action for us.

The Scousers have a game in hand over us but we have the points in the bag as we are now 6 points clear with them to play next.

I can't even remember what mine was, I'll assume ditching the SS to keep both wide outlets? This tactic I do remember gets hit hard by red cards though.

Match Days 40 and 41

We have a pivotal update today as we take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final 6th round (Quarter Final) and first off we take on 2nd placed Liverpool in a match that could go a long way to deciding the title.

We have a 3 point lead in the table so we could go 6 clear or Liverpool could level up with us with a win.

Match Day 40 versus Liverpool @ Home

Or it could be an inconclusive draw!

We left it late to get back into this game and avoiding Liverpool doing the double over us thanks to a late Pereyra goal after Hendo had given Liverpool the lead. The draw does suit us but we had the chances to win this game and open up a good lead at the top of the table.

When I saw Mané had got an 8 along with Hendo I thought he would probably have the higher AvR out of the 2 as he is an attacking player but as it turns out Henderson has had a better season. That is ok with me as Pereyra has been playing BBM and pulling up trees for me since I stole him from Watford and now he is off to Anfield so Hendo makes a good replacement even if he isn’t quite as good going forward.

This draw keeps me top by 3 points, we have both played the same number of games and the GD is very close as well.

Match Day 41 versus Chelsea @ Home

We knocked Chelsea out in the League Cup on our way to lifting that trophy so let’s see if we can repeat the trick.

We seem to like going behind in games and then coming back to get a result and this was another case of that as Fàbregas gave the Londoners the lead. This woke us up though and goals from Hazard and Zaha gave us a lead at HT before Hazard wrapped it up 3 minutes from time.

We have now taken 6 players from Chelsea this season with only 1 going the other way because of a draw in the league. This time Fàbregas joins us alongside Azpilicueta who adds to our defensive numbers but I doubt Cesc will fit in our style.

Match Days 42 and 43

We start with a league game against West Ham and then it’s the Cup semi versus Arsenal as we look to get to our 2nd cup final in this season.

Match Day 42 versus West Ham @ Home

In terms of shots on goal we didn’t create a lot this game but we did have 3 CCC so they were good chances and we took 2 of them in a pretty routine win. It was 2 of my main men that got the goals as well with Hazard opening the scoring and then vastly underrated (@Ashez @Yung.Gabe 😛) Ross Barkley making it safe.

I’m massively happy with my squad now and there really aren’t many players that I could take that and not many from West Ham I would want.

I took Balbuena who is actually a very good CB although he lacks technical ability to play as a BPD and Joe Powell who is an ok young CM/CAM who could develop but it won’t be in this save.

We are now 3 points behind Liverpool but we have 2 games in hand so it is still in our hands this season.

Match Day 43 versus Arsenal

Arsenal are 3rd but they are 9 points behind us so we have a good chance to make another final.

This was a real dominant performance for us and Zaha settled any nerves with a 17th minute goal and then that man Barkley scored his 12th goal of the season to double our lead. Another Zaha goal made it more comfortable in the 2nd half before Zelalem got a consolation for Arsenal but Jesus got a late 4th meaning we take 3 Arsenal lads back to Bournemouth with us.

We take 3 players with Zelalem being one and Lichtsteiner being another. It then came down to AvR and we take the Welsh wizard Aaron Ramsey with us.

Ramsey is a nice take although I’m not sure he will get in the side before now and the end of the season, Zelalem needs to develop and Lichtsteiner is past it.
