I’m assuming that’s the same Daniel Harvie that I had at Queen’s Park. A nice left wing back he is.

It is, he turns out to become fantastic but got a bit too big for his boots the season or two after this and left to a higher division!

He seems to be failing at this tremendously at the moment 😛

I know, anyone would think I'm using League 2 and conference players against established European sides 😂

You'll be calling for me back when they're in the Northern League under your leadership!!

  • Europa League Matchday 4
  • 7th November 2019
  • Partizan v Gateshead - Att: 32,009
  • Partizan Stadium, Belgrade

Line-ups

Partizan: Kljajic, Miletic, Markovic, Valiente, Vulicevic, Ilic (c), Njie, Gomes, Tosic, Derlek, Nikolic.

Gateshead: Eastwood, Bennett, Sibbick, Isherwood, Harvie, Paton (c), Bates, Adshead, Thomson, Redmond, Brunker.

You have to think that this is pretty much do or die when it comes to Gateshead’s chances of qualifying for the knockout phase. The draw in the return fixture didn’t really do them any favours and nothing short of all 3 points in Serbia is what is required with an intimidating trip to Zenit next on the horizon.

A packed out Partizan contingent and 85 Gateshead fans added up to a 32,000 attendance for this crunch clash. No arrests made as of yet but you get the feeling they are to come, maybe they could start with whoever designed Gateshead’s exotic, nauseous pink European away kit.

For the first time in this Europa League campaign Gateshead made a fast, encouraging start and were enjoying a lot of possession in the opposition half. However this wasn’t really going anywhere, and the tactic of lobbing it up to Kai Brunker up front was almost instantly becoming obsolete as the big bastards at the back for Partizan were eating the long balls up for breakfast on a plate surrounded by seasonal vegetables. For all this early possession though the first chance went to the hosts, after Devonte Redmond needlessly gave the ball away inside the centre circle the Serbs broke at pace, great work from Armin Derlek and Nermanja Nikolic to get round Paul Paton and give the ball to Zoran Tosic who caused Gateshead a few nightmares in the return fixture, Tosic completed a couple of stepovers and fired just wide from outside the area.

Partizan were starting to get Tosic on the ball a lot more at this point and a couple of agricultural challenges were flying in from Gateshead, Paton got away with one but Toby Sibbick didn’t get away with another just outside the area as the referee whipped out the yellow card. Tosic’ free kick deflected off the wall and out for a corner, which flew straight into the grateful hands of Jake Eastwood.

Further chances were spurned by the hosts, with skipper Sasa Ilic stinging the palms of Eastwood from distance and Nikolic dragging wide from inside the box. Gateshead weathered the storm though and had got to 40 minutes with the match still deadlocked. They knew they needed to win but it would be dangerous to go all out for that, and maybe their best chance would be to explore any avenues on the counter attack.

None of those opportunities arose before the break though and the teams went into the break level and a few impatient whistles were heard from the Partizan faithful who were obviously fully expecting their team to be in front.

Half Time - Partizan 0-0 Gateshead

The second half started quietly and you could sense the unrest in the crowd more and more as the game went on. 10 minutes after the break though and Gateshead had a huge shout for a penalty turned down, a rare corner went over everyone and arrived at the feet of Daniel Harvie at the edge of the area, the Scotsman sent it back goalwards and it appeared to strike the arm of Svetozar Markovic, the Gateshead players were going berserk but the referee remained unmoved.

Shortly after this the game swung into the favour of Partizan again, and yet again it was Tosic at the centre of it. A mazy run and ball sent Armin Derlek away on the right, he had Harvie’s life on the wing and put a low fizzing ball across which Thomas Isherwood stuck a leg at and for a heart-stopping moment it looked like it was flying into the net but it just went wide. From the resulting corner Marc Valiente headed down into the floor, it bounced up and over clipping the bar and landing on the top of the net.

With 20 minutes to go Gateshead freshened things up bringing on Benji Kimpioka for Jordan Gibson and Greg Olley for Devonte Redmond. It wouldn’t be long before they really had to start going for it but to even get to that stage they had to keep holding firm and stop giving stupid free kicks away as yet again a header flew over the bar, this time from Nikolic. Was it just going to be one of those nights for Partizan.

The final throw of the Gateshead dice was throwing on Ben Hinchcliffe for Alfie Bates. 10 minutes to go at this point and the game had entered another lull, as both sides prepared for one final push. You would have though that there’s one big chance left in this game, and whoever it was going to fall to the player simply had to take it.

That chance fell to the visitors. As the clock ticked round to 87 minutes Jake Bennett played a one-two with the quiet Daniel Adshead and got the ball in a crossing position. It wasn’t the best ball but Nemanja Miletic wafted a leg out, it arrived at the feet of Hinchcliffe with the goal begging, just around on the penalty spot and... he blazed it over the bar! Heads in hands for everyone concerned with Gateshead, surely that was the chance gone now.

6 minutes of injury time was met with roars from both sets of fans, there was a stoppage halfway through the half due to an injury to Tosic after the brutal challenges. He was still having a go though, Partizan were still very much going for the winner and he was still playing a central role. He won a corner in the second minute of the six added but for once the delivery was poor, but Bennett could only put it behind for another corner. Vital seconds being lost for Gateshead and another minute had ticked by until eventually the ball was in the hands of Eastwood. Olley then launched an effort from outside the area which had some dip on it but it was just over the bar, but a slight deflection had sent it out for a corner. This was it and everyone bar the keeper and Paton were up. Bennett swung the ball in from the right, Isherwood got a vital knock on to the far post and an almighty scramble emerged, a Gateshead boot swung at the ball and it crept under the despairing dive of the keeper and it went in!!! They had done it in the 5th minute of time added on, no-one knew who had scored but that didn’t matter a jot as bedlam ensued on the pitch, on the sidelines and in the away end. Everyone wearing Gateshead colours were going wild and the same could be said for the home faithful but for opposite reasons as missiles were being thrown onto the pitch, fans throwing season tickets at the manager and loud choruses of boos. They had just been beaten at home by a side from England’s 4th tier... well not yet but 30 seconds after the restart they had been, and they were not happy.

It was finally revealed who scored on the stadium scoreboard but apparently whoever designed the graphics doesn’t know how to spell his name :P

The good thing about you waiting 6 months between me making the graphics and you actually posting is that I can’t remember what actually happened.

Great win for Gateshead.

Looks like it’ll all come down to the final game against Prague at the International stadium and hopefully we’ll see that before FMM20 comes out.😛

  • Europa League Matchday 5
  • 28th November 2019
  • Zenit v Gateshead - Att: 52,522
  • Krestovsky Stadium, St Petersburg

Line-ups

Zenit: Kerzhakov, Ivanovic (c), Anyukov, Mammana, Smolnikov, Kranevitter, Barrios, Shatov, Driussi, Dordevic, Dyzuba.

Gateshead: Eastwood, Bennett, Sibbick, Isherwood, Harvie, Paton (c), Olley, Adshead, Gibson, Redmond, Brunker.

Gateshead had only just got over their dramatic win in Serbia by the time this game swung around and on paper it was the toughest assignment of the group staring at them. Zenit ran out comfortable winners in the reverse fixture and having already all but qualified maybe they would take their foot of the gas here. The other group stage game between Partizan and Slavia is just as important as this one and could either provide some great news for Gateshead or a potential disaster.

For those that didn't play in the FA Cup final this 50K+ attendance is the biggest they have ever played in front of and wilting under it was not an option with crucial points to play for. Thankfully there was no need for the pink away kit this time out.

The opening exchanges didn't go as anyone expected as Gateshead kept the ball nicely and had most of the possession of the ball. They were pinning a far more talented and experienced Zenit side back in the first ten minutes but lacked a real killer pass. However out of nowhere Daniel Harvie unleashed a thundercunt from outside the area which whizzed narrowly over the bar.

That was as good as it got in terms of the first half though for the visitors as it didn't take long for Zenit's class to shine through. To give Gateshead some credit they stayed resolute at the back despite the tricky wing play from Sebastian Driussi and Luka Dordevic coupled with the array of passing in the middle of the park. They were passing the ball a lot quicker and smoother than their L2 opponents but there wasn't anything they could do to get through the commanding centre back partnership of Thomas Isherwood and Toby Sibbick who were clearing everything in their path and also getting away with a few agricultural challenges. Paul Paton didn't get away with a two footed lunge in first half stoppage time though as he was booked but overall it was a successful first half for Gateshead. They would be absolutely delighted if it stayed this way come the end.

Half Time: Zenit 0-0 Gateshead

The second half started in a lacklustre style for both sides. No-one could really string any possession together and Zenit reacted with a double change, bringing on Aleksandr Kokorin and Sardar Azmoun for Dordevic and Igor Smolnikov respectively. This was far from the most entertaining of games but that suited Gateshead just fine as they continued to deal with the surprisingly weak threat Zenit offered.

Then out of nowhere controversy. Hero of the hour from the Partizan game Toby Sibbick turned to villain as he was harshly adjudged to have handled inside the area and the hosts were awarded a penalty kick. Driussi was trusted with the responsibility and he hit it hard down to Jake Eastwood's right... But he got a strong hand to it and tipped it round the post! It nearly got even better for Gateshead shortly after as an over hit Daniel Adshead cross sent a desperate Mikhael Kershakov scrambling to top it over the bar.

After those mad 5 minutes the game appeared to be settling down again but just as Gateshead thought it was safe to breathe easy again Zenit struck and there was nothing they could do about it. A hopeful shot from Artim Dyzuba crashed off Thomas Isherwood and back out to Kokorin who hit it straight back goalwards. This strike took a savage deflection off Jake Bennett completely wrong-footing Eastwood and into the back of the net. Disappointment for Gateshead who had looked more than comfortable in this game.

1FF94EA0-AEA6-4215-82D5-C2D5DAAB238F.png

Gateshead had put a lot into this game chasing the shadows of the opposition for the most part and now had to find a way to muster a chance to get back into it otherwise they're relying on other results. In fact the opposite happened as 90 seconds later Kokorin nearly added a second as he crashed a right footed half volley off the bar.

They huffed and puffed but the tables had turned now and now it was the brutal fuckers at the back for Zenit that were sweeping up everything in their path. Everyone was forward for Gateshead and after a hopeful shot from Adshead was blocked and cleared Zenit countered and had a 2 on 1 in stoppage time to kill the game off. Some good defending though from Isherwood stopped them in their tracks but it was too late and there was no more time for Gateshead.

This turned into a disappointing night as they matched their much stronger opponents for the best part of the game and it was just a slice of luck that turned the tables against them.

Full Time: Zenit 1-0 Gateshead - Kokorin 71

However there was excellent news awaiting the Gateshead players in the dressing room afterwards as Slavia Prague had come from behind to defeat Partizan 2-1. That means that if Gateshead can beat the Czech outfit in the last group game they will remarkably be through to the knockout stages. A draw would be enough providing Partizan fail to beat Zenit.

Exciting stuff if I do say so myself.

Hard lines on the result but a successful match day nonetheless.

Pretty sure you’ll get the job done at the International Stadium and make it through but of course we’ll have to wait for confirmation on you next update.

  • Europa League Matchday 6
  • 12th December 2019
  • Gateshead v Slavia Prague - Att: 11,623
  • International Stadium, Gateshead

Line-ups

Gateshead: Eastwood, Bennett, Sibbick, Isherwood, Hume, Paton (c), Bates, Adshead, Thomson, Redmond, Hinchcliffe.

Slavia Prague: Kolar, Coufal, Kudela, Boril, Frydrych, Stoch, Ngadeu-Ngadjui (c), Pavlenka, Husbauer, Skalak, van Buren.

To recap from the previous matchday Gateshead knew that a win and only a win would guarantee a place in the knockout phase. A draw would only be enough if Partizan also fail to beat Zenit. A packed out International stadium for the 3rd time this European campaign were eagerly anticipating what was going to happen and phones were also at the ready to keep bang up to date with the other match in the group.

The reverse fixture between these two was a free-flowing 2-2 draw but it was obvious early that this encounter would be a lot less pulsating and a lot more nervy. Both sides started nervously especially the hosts and it nearly started in disaster for League 2 outfit as a hopeful effort from Mick van Buren took a deflection off Denver Hume, who was deputising for the injured Daniel Harvie and left Jake Eastwood scrambling to tip it round the post. If anyone looked like they were going to break the deadlock in the opening half-hour it was Slavia but there was nothing clear cut.

Gateshead won their fire corner of the match was greeted with a roar by the home faithful but Alfie Bates' inswinging delivery went through everybody and out for a goal kick.

Just before the break there was a wonderful piece of play from Juri Skalak who beat two men down the right hand side before pulling it back to Josef Husbauer on the edge of the box, however his effort fired into the side netting. Half time arrived with Slavia slightly on top but the scoreline still at 0-0, and with the same happening in Serbia Gateshead were heading through with just 45 minutes to go.

Half Time: Gateshead 0-0 Slavia Prague

Live Score: Partizan 0-0 Zenit.

Slavia came out meaning business in the second half, a draw would not be enough for them unless it was 3-3 or more and they knew they needed to grab a goal sooner rather than later. But the problem for them was that yet again Toby Sibbick and Thomas Isherwood were standing firm at the back.

Just before the hour though they got the chance they'd been waiting for. Paul Paton picked up his customary yellow card for bringing down van Buren in the D. The Dutchman stepped up to take it himself and leant way too far back as he spooned the ball into the delighted home fans. There was more for them to smile about shortly after as the striker left the field due to injury, met with sarcastic waves and obscene hand gestures.

Gateshead were looking more dangerous on the counter after the introduction of Benji Kimpioka and Tom White. It was the two substitutes who nearly combined for a priceless goal but a strong left hand from Ondrej Kolar denied the Swede with a stunning save. 75 played and Gateshead were still heading through, but a goal in either game could change that at any moment. Fingernails were being chewed at a rapid rate.

The International Stadium soon erupted though and it was nothing to do with what was happening in front of them. News filtered through that Zenit had put one in against Partizan and with less than 10 minutes to go it looked unlikely that the Serbs would take the win. What this now means is that all Gateshead need to do is hold on to what they have but a goal from Slavia would send them through instead.

Live Score 81 mins: Partizan 0-1 Zenit

Every minute was taking forever if you were of Gateshead persuasion at this point and a succession of 3 Slavia corners weren't doing anything to ease the nerves. Eastwood claimed the third though and did the fall to ground keeping the ball for about 45 seconds despite only actually being allowed it for 6.

Daniel Adshead then promptly went down with "cramp" and having wasted a good 2 and a half minutes which everyone knows the officials don't bother adding on play restarted. But the Slavia assistant wasn't having this and did the Arsene Wenger "water bottle slam". Unfortunately this hit the fourth official and he was dismissed from the touchline.

There was one more heart in mouth moment for Gateshead as what looked to be an underhit back pass from Isherwood was dealt with just about by Eastwood but there was one more terrifying long throw to come in from the huge long-armed Czech full back Michal Frydrych. It was up in the air forever but Eastwood came and punched it, Hume knocked it on further and the referee blew for full time.

Pitch invasions ensued as there were no more goals in the other group match and Gateshead had miraculously made it though their group.

Full Time: Gateshead 0-0 Slavia Prague.

Gateshead qualify for the knockout stages on head to head away goals.

Europa League First Knockout Round Draw

flag-england2x.png&key=32908f503b67f98de Gateshead v Spartak Moscow flag-russia2x.png&key=8629f47cdafd0f1a30

It appears that our luck with draws shows no sign of ending as to name a few teams we could have got - Chelsea, Sevilla, Inter, Lazio but instead we are taking on another Russian outfit in Spartak Moscow although it didn't go well in the two matches against Russian opposition so far this European campaign.

The first leg will take place at the International Stadium with the return fixture a fortnight later in the Russian capital.

I remember in FM18 I led Eastbourne to FA cup semi finals, stunning Crystal Palace on penalties and a four nil drubbing of Cheltenham. We faced Man City and  lost 8-0. I got promoted to the League Two (I had done a season before) but got sacked at the end of that season as we were relegated, and were humiliated 2-0 by Billericay (including an own goal from my striker)
