The ‘not so’ Nasty North - Season Two

Welcome to season two of the north’s quest to beat the south to 1000 goals. After looking at my esteemed colleague @Woody‘s first season and the transfers that he made I was rather happy as there were some great names there plus the squad already had a lot of tasty young players so the aim for me this season was to try and win the league and go far in all of the cup competitions.

I was always going to go with my Jun Se-Jin 1k set up here to test it out in another league so it’ll be interesting to see how it performs.

Anyway let me now reveal my player choice for this season.

Mariano - Dominican Republic

A few players with similar attributes came up in my search and it gave me a bit of a headache for a while before I finally decided on Mariano from Real Madrid. I mainly went for this lad for his attribute number of 20 for Shooting but the concern was his Stamina at only 14 which was a risk so we’ll see if that comes back to haunt me.

Other Transfers

I spent big on the main man but still had money available for some other signings. Henrichs is a right wing back who I’ve heard a lot of good things about but haven’t used him myself so hopefully he’ll do the business. Marius Wolf was brought in to play on the right wing as although we have the great Pavon I feel there are more than enough games available to keep them both happy. I actually only signed him as we lost Sabitzer without my consent so had to replace him. Simón is a decent young goalkeeper and the other Wolf must’ve been a pre organised transfer as I didn’t go for him. I used Burke as a makeweight in the deal to bring in young Italian midfielder Mandragora who I’ve used loads of times, not sure why Burke isn’t showing as an outgoing transfer. No need to go into much detail on McKenna as most will know about him but he’s a nice reliable centre back.

In terms of outgoings Forsberg was the biggest and he really only went as he became an outcast.

Team Performances

We had a fantastic season from a results perspective as we won all of the competitions we were competing in. Of course that doesn’t necessarily mean my striker scored a lot of goals but more on that later.

League

No problems in the league as we won comfortably with an unbeaten season.

European Super Cup

I wasn’t too confident going into this as Liverpool are quite formidable but we dominated them and the main man scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the first half.

German Cup

A total hammering in the final against Kaiserslautern but we could only manage a 2-0 win.

Champions League

Man Utd were our opponents in the final and after they scored in the first couple of minutes I was fearing the worst. Mariano made up for missing a penalty by equalising in stoppage time at the end of the first half. We were much the better side throughout and managed to get the winning goal fairly late on in the second half to give us a nice Champions League win.

Fixtures

Nice run of fixtures with just a few hiccups along the way. The 4-4 game against Inter was the result of our new young goalkeeper having a stinker so he was dropped and hasn’t actually played a game since but I’m sure he’ll get another chance at some point. The semi against Atletico looks close as we only won on away goals but their goal in the away game was literally the last kick of the game so the result was never in any doubt.

He improved his aerial number as the season went on which was helpful.

How many goals did he get?

He got 55 in 49 games which isn’t exactly earth shattering and I had hoped for 60+ but can’t be helped. I did have a bit of a problem with his fitness as towards the end of the season he was always slightly tired and I can’t help but think if he had just had say 16 for stamina he’d of scored a good few more goals.

Well that’s the end of season two for the north and although I wanted more goals I’m happy enough as the team performed really well.

We’ve got a nice young squad and most are great now but they still aren’t fully developed so there’s plenty to be positive about.

Anyway, I fully expect @Foxy to jump all over this which will put us a good bit behind but it’s early days and it’d only take a poor or injury ravaged season for the south and we could easily make up the difference.

I’ll pass the save over tomorrow to my colleague @Woody where he will play season 3.

North

Season 1 - Woody: Oliver Burke - Scotland: 34 goals in 46 games.

Season 2 - Ian: Mariano - Dominican Republic: 55 goals in 49 games.

South

Thank you Rob, I just used my Ajax set up where I have one tactic for most games and another one for the harder away games and they seem really good. I have only used the systems here, at Ajax and for the VWC Messi challenge. 

@Woody will get the tactics so he will be able to test them also if he wants to as they might be able to be improved upon.

Love Mariano mate, he was understudy to Rashford when i started at Real Madrid and always seemed to score. Shame he's not a bit younger as he'd be prime for a 1k.

Yes we’ll just have to wait but there’s plenty of time to make up ground anyway so don’t you worry about the North.

Yes he’s a nice player and I think he scored all of his penalties apart from the one in the Champs final which makes a change as usually my takers on goal scoring challenges are rather poor from the spot.

The Superior South: Season 2

@1759 posted an excellent 2nd season as he won plenty and got a good goal total from Mariano so the pressure is onto me to make sure that I can maintain the lead that @Rob built in season 1 as he scored 19 more goals than @Woody.

My Challenger

I decided to stick to a homegrown player for my first season and used a German. This is slightly risky as that means we can’t use another German during this save but I hope that it will be worth it.

I went for Davie Selke who is a player I don’t think I have ever used before but I have seen in saves before and liked the look of him.

He set me back £20m which was a decent chunk of the budget but I got £13m for Marega so that went some way to find the deal. Selke pissed me off early though as he decided after a couple of games that he was too big for Frankfurt and he wanted out. I had to fight if Bayern in January as well which just annoyed him more so I will be happy to see that back of him.

@Rob had left me with a good squad and my aim was to build upon his good work this year. Hopefully we are sorted for a few years in a few key positions now.

I actually had some surplus transfer budget and had a couple of players turn me down to join but this could be a blessing in disguise as I used the money to max out our training facilities although they did turn me down for a 2nd improvement on the youth facilities.

Competitions

After Ian won the league, cup and champions league treble in his season I have a bit to live up to.

German Cup

I made it through to the cup final and it was Davie who stole the show in the final.

League 

This was the big one for me as I fully expected to win the league and anything less would have been a disappointment. The big obstacle though is always going to be Bayern and they started the season in fine form as at the half way stage they had yet to lose a game.

A lack of goals was hampering us although defensively we were solid.

Luckily we stepped it up in the 2nd half of the season and Bayern couldn’t maintain the pace they had set. We played Bayern in the penultimate game and a win or draw would see us win the league.

No problems for the lads and we won the league with a game to spare.

Champions League

The CL didn’t go to plan at all as we crashed out in the 1st KO round to Man Utd with the damage being done in the first leg.

The big question is how did Davie get on?

The answer is he was pretty average. You saw we struggled for goals in the first half of the season and that was theme for the season as Davie was our only goal threat and he was wasteful. We created plenty of shots in most games but didn’t convert as many as I would like.

Saying that it is still early in this save and the squad is still being built so the 52 in 46 games that Davie got isn’t so bad and it helps keep the South in front although Ian has clawed a few goals back for the North.

The North Season 3.

@Foxy & @Rob have had solid starts to their careers and @1759 is holding us up after my shoddy 1st season.

Ive been trying to get my 'Pecker' tactic to work on this years game for some time now but its finally ready to be unleashed. So i have whipped it out and thrashed it around Germany for my 2nd turn.

So to give me a chance of making up for turn 1 i needed a solid striker who met every bit of the criteria i required. I chose......

I thought we needed a few additions just to bulk out the squad abit. And we managed to sell Mariano but for only £45m as we struggled for takers.

After turn one i wanted to focus more on winning se silverware and that started with the league season.

Our luck ran out here as we just couldnt finish off some solid attacking moves and ultimately paid the price.

Well he managed to knock him self 60 goals showing the Pecker is well and truly back(i hope)!!
