Season One - Results

Hello Vibe,

Welcome to the season one review of this vibe a-z community challenge. As I revealed a couple of days ago the chosen team for this challenge was Tottenham Hotspur and my chosen A and B players for season one were winger Lautaro Acosta and centre forward Andrea Belotti so let’s see how they and the team got on.

Transfers

As I spent nearly the whole transfer budget on my two challengers we were left in a position where we had to wheel and deal to improve the rest of the squad. One of the great things about managing a top top team like Spurs is that they have such a lot of great players already at the club so you don’t necessarily have to make loads of transfers anyway. I did want to bring in a few younger players for the future and tried to shift a few of the players I didn’t fancy whilst also keeping in mind that this is a community challenge and other players might have their heart set on using a few current players so balance was required.

So these are the incoming transfers apart from my two challengers with the majority arriving in pre season and just one or two in January.

  • Tanguy Ndombele (Central Midfielder) - A top young midfielder who was my main priority as he’s class.
  • Rolando Mandragora (Central Midfielder) - Another great midfielder who I’ve used many a time. He actually arrived in January as we couldn’t quite raise the funds pre season.
  • Claud Adjapong (Wing Back) - A tidy right footed wing back who can play on either side.
  • Weston McKennie (Central Midfield) - Another young midfielder and one I’ve used on a few saves. He’s a great all round player who usually develops great physical attributes.
  • Issa Diop (Central Defender) - Bought in January after the sale of Sanchez to bolster our numbers in defence. I didn’t want to sell Sanchez but Barca came in with a big bid and I thought I could use some of the fee to improve the squad.
  • Alphonso Davies (Left Winger) - He’s a young prospect who looks like he’s going to turn into a great player.
  • Alex Telles (Left Wing Back) - Fantastic wing back who won’t let you down.
  • Cristian Pavón (Winger) - Just had to sign this lad as he usually turns into a beast of a player.
  • Scott McKenna (Central Defender) - After the sale of Sanchez I decided to go with the highly reliable Scott McKenna who is always great value for money.
  • Yuri Ribeiro (Left Wing Back) - He was signed as a back up left wing back as we’d ended up short there. He seems steady.

I shipped a few players out but I’d like to think I kept most of the great younger player at the club. Sanchez was a tricky one as he’s young and class but the offer was too good to turn down especially as you can often find cheap reliable centre backs.

Full list of all transfers below.

League Cup

We had no real trouble in early rounds in this competition until we were taken to penalties by Fulham in the quarter final. We came through that but the semi final draw was worrying as we were drawn against the Mighty Reds of Liverpool. I wasn’t confident and that proved correct as they sent us packing at Anfield in a 2-0 first leg defeat with big Divock getting a goal. It was harsh really as we were more than worthy of a goal but it kind of felt as if that was it for us in this competition. The second leg was a similar game but this time it was us that got the two goals as Belotti netted a brace which forced penalties and lady luck shone on us as we won the shootout to give us a trip to Wembley to face Chelsea in the final.

Final

It was never going to be an easy game against Chelsea and that proved to be the case as we couldn’t get going in the first half. Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored a goal for them fairly early which seemed to wake us up and we dominated from there on in but couldn’t get that all important equaliser so we will have to wait for our first trophy I’m afraid.

FA Cup

The early rounds were routine until we again faced Liverpool at Anfield in the sixth round and again I wasn’t overly confident if I’m honest. I should’ve had more faith as we were by far the better side with Belotti scoring both goals in a 2-1 win with Acosta assisting both of them.

Semi Final

We were drawn against North London rivals Arsenal in the semi final and I fancied it as we are much the better side these days. Unfortunately we just couldn’t get going and a Harry Kane stoppage time goal wasn’t enough as they went on the score the winner during extra time.

League

We can finally celebrate something as we won the league and were rather dominant too in only losing two games and drawing seven. We’d have liked more goals but that can often be tricky in first seasons. We came through the early season well in only losing one game against Manchester United at Old Trafford and once we hit the mid way point of the season I was confident we could win it. A home defeat to Fulham at the end of January was the only time I was overly concerned but we put that behind us and ran home comfortable winners.

Champions League

It’s safe to say we didn’t start off the group stage very well as we lost the opening two games. One of them was away to Hoffenheim which as bad as it was can be accepted with it being away but the Juventus home defeat that followed had me wondering if we’d even be able to make third and the Europa place. We managed to fight back as I got my rotation right and won four on the spin to take second place. The final game against Juventus had no meaning as both of our positions were gaurenteed so I played reserves and kids thinking we’d take a hammering. Didn’t plan out like that and my 1kc hero Troy Parrott scored the only goal in a famous win.

Semi Final

We had no real problems in the knockout rounds and ended up meeting our group stage foes Juventus in the semi. We played well enough in the away leg but just couldn’t get that often important away goal which was a shame as I felt it was in us. They only scored one goal though so we still had a good chance going into the second leg. I wasn’t happy with the fact we had two league games sandwiches between the two legs but we didn’t let that get to us as we dominated them in the return game and two penalties from Belotti were enough to send us to the final where we’d face Atletico Madrid.

Final

I was happy to face these in the final and I don’t mean any disrespect there as they are a great side but one I’d fancy us to beat. We were the better side throughout and how fitting it was that Acosta and Belotti scored the two goals in a 2-1 victory to win us the big one.

Players

Lautaro Acosta

Acosta had a decent season with 30 assists in 44 games which I’m happy with as my target was only mid twenties. He did suffer a month long layoff too in which he missed most of December.

Andrea Belotti

Belotti scored 49 goals in 52 games and I’m fine with that too as it is the first season where it can often be tricky to get a lot of goals.

Player attributes and notable matches

You can see Belotti has improved a little bit during the season which I wasn’t expecting. I suppose he was only 24 when we signed him so he must’ve had a bit of development left in him.

Conclusion

Well that’s the first season and I’m more than happy enough with it as we managed to win the league and champions league which is great for our development. I’ve actually left the club with no budget and slightly over on wages but Toby Alderweireld is leaving shortly after the season switch over as he had a £25m release clause which Dortmund exploited so there should be a decent enough budget available for season two.

I’ll pass the save over to @Foxy now who will then distribute it to @Krenzar who’s taking over for season two I believe. The save slot will be slot 4.

A-Z Challenge

Welcome to the Vibe Community Save A-Z Challenge

You can find the community save challenge here.

The Challenge

The challenge is an A-Z challenge and each season the member who’s turn it is will have to sign a goal scorer and assister who’s surnames (can be first name on tricky letters) begin with the letters for that season. So season 1 is the A and B season then season 2 C and D and so on....

When you have the save you may manage the club how you see fit and buy and sell whichever players you wish and your season score is striker goals+ midfielder assists from the two players you sign.

Season 11 U and V: @Titjes

Season 12 W and X: @Lord Danish

Season 13 Y and Z:

Season 2 C-D

I will be taking charge from @Ian. He has done a very good job and set the bar extremely high with 49 goals and 30 assists. He has been nice and won a few tourneys and given me a sizable transfer budget (especially for spurs). With that I hope to do even better.

Player Choices

Spoiler

C : Douglas Costa (assists)

IMG_0974.thumb.jpg.a93e41f09d9f1907f35e5457717b0268.jpg

I knew I either wanted Costa or Countinho as my assister, going to be honest I only went with costa because Countinho would not negotiate his contract with me. I signed him for a whopping $113 Million. Hopefully he can make every dollar count.

Spoiler

D : Paulo Dybala (Goals)

IMG_0973.thumb.jpg.7dce698b771ce58acfc04f42d477641f.jpg

Another expensive signing, except not in the form of cash. I figured I would only need one star backup striker so I kept Belotti and did a straight swap with Kane for Dybala. He is linked to spurs at the moment so I figured I could test it out.

Other notable pre-season transfers

  • Spoiler

    • loaned out some young players who would not get any game time
    • Donnarumma - $56 Million, will be a solid keeper almost the whole save
    • Varane - $39.5 Million + Cameron Carter Vickers, who wouldn't want varane in their team?

I'll get started and let you guys know when I'm done. Wish me luck!!

Excellent player choices.

I have merged this into @Ian thread as everyone needs to post in this thread so it is easy for us all to follow.

Hmm... I just wanted to ask wether the selected can be a regen or not? @Foxy

I would rather keep it to real players as much as we can as it’s probably more interesting to follow players we know or can buy ourselves but as we eat to tricky letters regen maybe needed.

Surely some need but mostly I thing you can get real and young players like Trincao, van Bergen, Wesley, Xadas and Zirkzee

Hummels - 47 million got me an experienced center back

Donnarumma - one of the best young goalies and should be one for the future in this save

Isco - felt i needed a switch up after receiving a huge offer for eriksen, cashed in and bought isco.

League

was a close race the whole season but this time it wasn't man city. Liverpool ended up pulling ahead and winning by five points with city finishing 14 behind me. Could have won a few of the close loses and changed the outcome completely but what can you do?

Started Strong with a 9-0 win against Middlesbrough and had high hopes. Put in a bunch of solid performances but it just wasnt meant to be.

Champions League

Spoiler

Could there be a happy ending to this so far not so happy Story?

Group stage went well with the only defeat being 1-0 to Barca

Walked past Valencia and SLB in the next two rounds.

The Semi Final was against Liverpool, I knew I had a game on my hands. Beat them 2-0 in both legs and was laughing my way to the final.

The final was against Bayern, it started off bad, 2-0 down at half time. Unlike the real life spurs we did not bottle it at the end, tied it up with 7 minutes to go and we were heading to overtime. Dybala scored 2 minutes in and the rest is history.

A little ironic to say the least, but Dybala, Eriksen (sold in Jan) and Costa won Best Player of Europe IMG_0982.thumb.PNG.47c0801c372b7535770ecc84a4b59e2c.PNG

Conclusion

Spoiler

Could have definitely done a lot better in the competitions but the goal and assists tally was not bad at all. The Champions League was a nice way to finish the season

Costa- 22 Assists

Dybala - 51 Goals

Total - 73

All in all I struggled to score the amount of goals necessary to really excel in this challenge, bringing in some more solid central midfielders would probably benefit down the road. Good luck to the next participant

Season 1: @Ian

A: Lautaro Acosta (assists) - 30

B: Andrea Belotti (goals) - 49

Total: 79

Season 2: @Krenzar

😄 Douglas Costa - 22 assists

d: Dybala - 51 goals

Total: 73

Thanks everyone it was a blast!

Well done on the CL win but you were definitely unlucky with some of the other cup draws. Really good total with Costa and Dybala as well.

I have passed the save onto @Rob so it will be interesting to see what players he chooses for E and F.

Season 3 - Player Reveal

So I have the honour of going third in this wonderful community challenge and have the letters E and F.

Seeing as I don’t think I can particularly fail this challenge, unless I get the sack, I wanted to go a little less obvious, so I’ve opted for Niklas Fullkrug as my F and my striker:

He is a lovely player that a few of us have used before, but he isn’t one of the main boys.

As for my E, and therefore my midfielder, I have gone for Anwar El Ghazi

Not the greatest, so this will be kinda interesting! Still, I have the honour of managing Spurs so it should be a fun season!

(@Ian please can you tweak the thread title? Ta)

Fullkrug is a very great striker especially for his price. What a surprise seeing you have never used him yet

el Ghazi doesn't seems that good for the mighty Tottenham Hotspur

Goodluck @Rob

Season 3 - Letters E and F

So aside from the utter pleasure of manage the wonderful Tottenham, I also got to pick letters E and F. El Ghazi was my E and midfielder; Fullkrug was my F and striker. Let’s see how we go on, shall we?

Transfers:

A3F84E3E-3EEE-4524-8512-C78AE4511285.thumb.png.56d4ed008cc5e09ecc4ad04c21fde184.png

Dybala went for £121m. Although we don’t have a rule to sell previously selected players, I figured he wouldn’t play much and the cash would be handy. The same applies for Belotti.

Son, Dier, and Hummels were unhappy, so I let them go. Dier is the only one I’d have wanted to keep hold of to be fair. The rest were squad players who were upgraded.

A862FD9D-D852-45C9-938B-D878D82029C8.thumb.png.972e37beec74483ee2b0b8a80273de01.png

Henrichs was my upgrade on Trippier. Lovely player. Diawara came in to provide competition for Ndombele. Los Celso came in to increase competition in attacking central midfield with Isco and Dele. Dayot joined to play alongside Varane in my dream central defence, with De Ligt and N’Dicka as my more than capable backups, along with McKenna who is already here.

Anderson is a young Swede striker who scouted really well and, I am not going to lie, looks a bit Zlatan reborn. Mallo and Garrido are two excellent young Spaniards.

Then there is Fullkrug and El Ghazi, who joins the boys at the home of English football.

Competitions:

Our first final was against Atletico Madrid in the European Super Cup.

0F02F5A8-48D0-40CF-A45F-627C3B814DE8.thumb.png.7ca7e87d1709077a488ca98884769c12.png

Fullkrug netted, and got one disallowed, in a convincing 2-0 victory.

Next up was the Club World Championship Final, where Fullkrug was hilarious.

5550196E-21B8-40C5-9FF2-B14B19A3F6B4.thumb.png.77d8d51d213a3c62c0a2146994606643.png

Two disallowed and a sending off. Magical. At least we won.

We also got to the League Cup Final, playing Manchester City, where Fullkrug redeemed himself with a goal in a narrow victory.

FDCF00F9-CEFD-4595-87C4-EFCB50807842.thumb.png.b1aa868e6fd0eee4829a5b038b487b9a.png

A league victory four games from the end allowed me to rotate players a bit more.

9F178A3F-48D3-4454-8026-8B82654BAC6F.thumb.png.0dcfb030a8925de7e58fe90fcd4d9e47.png

With a final league table looking like this:

447BF87D-D723-4E28-BFA2-50873D724157.thumb.png.55920aa06f688989c3ac3947b9ea818d.png

I’m quite pleased with the league season. I had to play a B team quite often and the boys did well. I think this challenge is about growing a complete squad together and the work of the boys before me meant that our second team was more than capable of beating most teams.

However, the team that really became our bogey lot was Manchester United, who beat us in the FA Cup Final.

943CB026-6C95-4632-85E0-086833EA9F13.thumb.png.ae99fc71be72767daa78e266a02229a2.png

As for the Champions League - the big one - we had a bit of a tricky group, which we navigated our way through.

E29408F1-1A8E-4C2E-8D88-821EBEDD7A27.thumb.png.6de612cfaaf72484fef1cc6efc28735a.png

A solid 2-1 victory away from home meant our 2-0 victory at home versus Bilbao meant we sailed through the first knockout round.

0D407EB8-2682-4699-9D68-EDA24BE64DC6.thumb.png.a18bc34ac595dfb509cf987ee966c81f.png

We then got Real Madrid in the quarters. We lost the first leg away 3-0 and then this happened in the second leg.

CE5032C7-8F28-4A89-8108-286A7ED8D16E.thumb.png.dcd88a67f221f727dd41a5ba4a5044b2.png

Wooha!

The semis was against a Dybala-infused SLB. Two 3-1 victories sent us through to the final.

B02748D8-3954-415B-8820-B5956E014FC1.thumb.png.62747004cb71586e6a077131e4a6067e.png

Sevilla were our opponents in the final. A comprehensive 3-0 victory meant we retained the big one.

Fullkrug:

So how did our striker do? Well, this is how he looked at the end:

E8F749F2-4BC0-49C9-BF50-C28079C5AA84.thumb.png.53b7bda5e60acb35a461e95014f60007.png

Top class training facilities, 28 years of age, and his attributes declined!

He got us a respectable 41 goals.

997E02C6-13CF-40B4-804C-F11DD8D52B3F.thumb.png.36edac2d0883ea03430d3ce9ba7510fb.png

So I’m pleased with that!

El Ghazi:

Here is where it gets funny. He got a month-long injury.

B4CBEC24-A988-434C-BEF7-A39B9DB46FE5.thumb.png.24e7050122a1bcc3bacc757faf067015.png

And another.

And another.

And a ten day injury right at the end just to pee me off!

F34A2E21-2DA7-4DF1-B720-3794AD269A3C.thumb.png.5f23e7e9e8f8171729bf1f9da480cdaa.png

Here is how he looked at the end:

32A32DD9-764C-47A3-B269-3487DE246C5C.thumb.png.9e091acc8da3f0d9501f3cd548295642.png

And he got us a massive 15 assists.

A3822A1E-2AD7-44D9-9CCA-A65565731EA4.thumb.png.dda8fec55a728c5b57b547996c46ee03.png

Again, I’m actually fairly pleased with that considering injuries and his ability.

Summary:

Despite the score not being brilliant, I really, really, really enjoyed that. We are building an excellent balanced squad and the team is winning tournaments, with only the FA Cup not coming home this year.

Over to @Woody to carry on the work - good luck!
