Season Seventeen

The first thing I did after moving over to the new season was to open up the contract negotiation page for Kean with the hope that he would be open to discussing his final long term deal. Well unfortunately I got nowhere with that which was annoying but we had the World Cup to play out so I put it to the back of my mind and concentrated on Italy and you can see how that played out further on down the post.

After our World Cup campaign had finished I was debating what approach I should take now as I was starting to resign myself to the fact that Moise would never sign. Of course you will all be thinking I was being daft as he still had two seasons left and would probably sign nearer the end but I have memories of Tekin and Se-Jin who both seemed to sign whenever I wanted them to and this felt different here with Kean. The last thing I wanted would be to get any closer to the 2k goals without getting to the target and that would likely be the case if all I could play was those last two seasons so I decided to try a risky approach. 

The decision was made that I would attempt to sell him and then buy him straight back with the idea that if it went belly up I could just end it here on a nice total but if it worked then I’d have five years left to get the 2kc done. 

He was offered out and Porto came in and bought him for £5.25m. Goodbye Moise!

I then made my approach and had a £24.5m bid accepted from Porto but of course we still needed Kean to agree terms and sure enough as I opened the negotiations I was met with the perfect screen with him basically happy to sign and all I had to do was max it out to five seasons and that was that. I went through all of this so quickly that I didn’t even put a sell on clause for the original sale to Porto as that could have resulted in us making a profit but quite frankly I’d of happily used our whole transfer budget if that was needed as we now have a five seasons including this one to get the job done.

Now to the season at hand.

International

Kean had another great World Cup as he won the Golden Boot scoring 11 goals throughout the tournament and also picked up the best player award. He helped himself to a hat trick in the semi final against Spain as we ran out comfortable winners which set up a potentially tricky final against Germany. We were confident as we’d always done well against them when we’d met them in the past and this was no different as we won 4-1 in a rather one sided affair. Only downside was that Kean could only score one of the goals but he is on the decline now so can’t have any real complaints. We also won the International League friendly tournament at the end of the season as we beat France in the final but unfortunately no goals from the main man. Big drop off for Kean this year as he only hit 16 goals for Italy but I’m still more than happy as he is 35 years old now.

As you’d expect Kean is slowing down but he still managed to score 75 goals in 54 games in a fantastic club campaign for the veteran. Combined with his 16 Italy goals we get a season total of 91 which I’m more than happy with at this stage. As was the case last season I felt as if his attributes really declined shortly after his birthday towards the end of February but I’m still happy with what I see and reckon he still has a few goals left in him yet.

Team Performances

A clean sweep of trophies this year. We drew a couple of games and suffered defeat on one occasion in the league in an otherwise dominant campaign. Kean performed fairly well in the cup finals as he scored six goals in total across all of them and scored the club’s last goal of the season in the Champions League final against Real in a 2-0 victory.

Final Thoughts

Brilliant season with us finally managing to get Kean to sign a long term deal, okay we had to do it in an unconventional way but the job was done all the same. I was more or less in celebration mode once we had bought him back but I had to reign those celebrations in as although it does look promising now, the job is far from complete. Anyway, he now stands on 1857 goals and needs 143 goals in four seasons to get the job done which is on average around 36 goals a season. My aim for next year is to hopefully get anything above 50 as that would then lower the amount needed for the following seasons.

Season Eighteen

Last season we managed in a roundabout way to finally get Kean tied down on a long term contract which really increased our chances of hitting the 2k goals. He also put up a great return for the season which only further added to the positive vibes but we need to keep our focus as he is declining all the time so we just have to keep going.

Moise Kean

Ironically since we brought Kean back he has always been willing to sign another contract and I was tempted to extend him again after New Year last season to give us the extra season but decided to hold off. Anyway, this season once we got to New Year I decided now was the time as that would then give us another five years after this season. So he was happy to sign up and even had the cheek to accept my offer for him to reconsider his retirement which means in theory he could potentially play on until he gets to 46 years of age.

His goal return dropped this season to a still respectable 47 goals in 51 games. I feel his pace dropping is the main reason for the drop off but as I say I can only be happy as it keeps us well on course especially now we’ve got another five seasons to go.

He added another 11 international goals to his tally which puts him on 362 goals for Italy under my management. Add on his club goals and his season total was 58 which I’m happy with as it lowers the total we need each season to just 17 goals.

Team Performances

A poor day in front of goal in the Super Cup final against Empoli prevented the clean sweep this year. Still a great season but you can really see the decline of Kean if you look at our total league goals which dropped to just 106 from 129 last season. It’s to be expected I suppose and as long as our results don’t majorly suffer then I’m fine with it. None of the other finals posed us much problems.

Regarding Tactic

I’ve had a fair few PM’s from members asking for my tactic. Just to clarify things, if I want to share the tactic then I will do so in the tactics section rather than via PM. Not sure if I will now with FMM20 being so close and quite frankly I’ve never before created anything anywhere near as effective as this so I’m just enjoying it at the moment and hoping it will still work fairly well on FMM20. I had used this tactic shortly after the game launched last year using inverted wing backs and it was a decent tactic for club results with a good amount of goals going to the striker but once I found out about the aerial bug I then went on to use normal wing backs for practically everything thinking it’s obviously going to be the way to go with having a guy so strong in the air up top. I now feel that that really set me back as I never entertained trying inverted wing backs again until this career when I thought I’d give the original tactic a try again. It went well early on as I was tweaking as I went and then before season eight, I decided to go out of the save and try to perfect it. In the end one midfield role was changed and through ball was dropped which resulted in such a difference as you can see looking at my returns from season eight onwards. I was always aware that through ball would probably be a poor idea with us being a strong team due to a lack of room in behind as we’d often be playing weaker opponents sitting deep but I had it in my head that it would result in a higher percentage of the goals going to our striker so stuck with it before deciding on a whim to try it without and it was night and day. So just two changes made such a difference to my tactic and I guess what I’m trying to say is to try everything as even little changes can make a massive difference. I mentioned my use of inverted wing backs as it’s a role that could often be overlooked but I highly recommend a few of you test the role a bit more as you may get a pleasant surprise.

Final Thoughts

We are well on course now and I’m rather confident that we’ll do it but obviously we still have to play it out.

Inverted wing backs used correctly are a lethal weapon this year imo, I have used them in most of my careers. Players like Alaba, Alves, TAA and then their regens are just beasts as inverted WB's. I even found a converted winger like Alphonso Davies in the community save can be effective there.

Like you say Ian you tweak your tactic as you have gone along and it takes a lot of trial and error to hit upon that ideal one that works for you, and there is no guarantee that it will work for anyone else due to different players, league etc.

Cheers Smoggy, yes I love the role too. You still seem to get the early crosses but I think they help you out with numbers in midfield which I like as I find it means you can get away with using two more attacking roles in midfield without it hindering you too much defensively.

My personal best is somewhere in the 1900+, just a few goals short of 2K, with a German player. A challenge I relished but at the same time a mistake which painfully meant no added INT goals.

Thank you, I’ve never used international on any of the other goalscoring challenges I’ve tried so far as I’ve never enjoyed it in the past. I usually try to stick to real players for as long as possible but I took a different approach here as it seemed like a good idea to get the best young Italians in at Juve and develop them especially with Italy being a top nation. I think that has made international quite fun as our team at Juve and Italy have almost always been identical throughout which makes it less of a headache when it comes to the day when I have to pick the squad. 

With the contract thing I’m only going off of my previous careers this year. On my DT at Ajax I tried to take Jun Se-Jin to the 1k after I’d reached the DT and he played his out to his early 40’s I think.  I tried a similar thing on my TT with Emincan Tekin and he played late into his 30’s and still had time left so I’m just hoping Kean sticks around but of course he might not which would be horrible if that happened only needing a few goals. I have looked at some stuff on the forum from previous years and it seems players used to be kind of done by the time they got into their early 30’s so maybe something has changed but can’t be sure. We’ll just have to see what happens with Kean.

Season Nineteen

Here we are with just 85 goals to go and five seasons hopefully including this one in which to get them. I’m fairly confident now, although there’s always that little bit of doubt there in my mind so we just need to keep on going at this stage.

International

We beat England in the European Championship final with Kean scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory. We had another great international season as Moise ended up scoring 11 goals for Italy including a hat trick in the International League semi final against France where we ran out 4-1 victors. Unfortunately he wasn’t fit enough to play in the final against Spain but our back up striker Gelmini more than made up for him as he also scored a nice hat trick in a one sided match that ended 5-1 in our favour. The Confederations Cup started just before the season cut off point and this is a tournament I really like as Moise has always performed really well and scores plenty of goals in in the past. He started off this year's tournament in style as he scored yet another hat trick in a 4-0 victory over New Zealand.

Moise is slowing down there’s no denying that but the veteran still has plenty left in him it would seem as he scored a decent 40 goals in 45 games this season. Fitness is starting to become an issue which is to be expected so I am starting to pick and choose the games I put him in for as he’ll probably have a much better chance of scoring against the weaker sides and in home games in particular. Plus it means I can sometimes keep him on for the full 90 minutes in a few games knowing he’ll be rested for the next.

Here are the transfers below and no point in going into detail about them as apart from Jérémy Doku who left on a free I think every other player on the list is a regen. I probably should have tried to sell Doku earlier as he was valued highly even as he aged but my replacement winger just wasn’t developed enough so had to leave it but getting Doku off the wage bill should prove to be helpful financially over the next few years.

Team Performances

We had a great season at Juventus as we went unbeaten in the league with just four draws. We aren’t scoring as many goals these days but that’s to be expected with Kean declining. I’m sure there will come a time when having Moise in the team will hinder us but that time hasn’t come yet as the results are still ok. We were lucky in the European Super Cup against Manchester United as it took two late goals from our winger Campo to send us victorious in an even game in which the 2-0 scoreline was harsh on them, no goal for Kean though unfortunately! New York were our opponents in the Club World Championship and it’s safe to say we had a fairly poor day in front of goal as we only managed to get two of our 13 shots on target but we got the 2-1 win in the end with Kean scoring one of the goals. Moise didn’t play in our Super Cup game against Roma but again as is often the case our back up striker Bove came in and produced the goods in scoring a nice brace in a 3-1 win. Again Moise was left out of another final as I was resting him for the next game which I thought would offer him a better chance of scoring. It worked out well as our other young back up striker Franco stole the show with a hat trick to win us the Italian Cup in a 3-1 victory over Sampdoria. I did start Kean in the Champions League final against Benfica but unfortunately he couldn’t score and even though we were much the better team, the match went to extra time where Bove who had come on for Kean earlier scored what would turn out to be the winning goal.

Final Thoughts

A fine season for everyone as even with Kean declining the team are still really dominant and our back up strikers rarely complain and produce the goods when needed. Only 34 goals required now and hopefully he can get them next season if possible and then anything after that will just be a bonus.

Anyway, thank you to all of the people who’ve followed this and for the fantastic support throughout and not just on this career but all the careers I’ve done so far as it’s highly appreciated.

Season Twenty

With Moise just needing 34 goals to hit our target we were hoping he’d get the job done this season and then any goals he gets after that could just be considered bonus goals. 

Let’s see how he got on.

Moise Kean

He did indeed hit his target as he scored 32 goals in 36 games for Juve and 10 international goals for Italy to bring his total goals to 2008. He’s looking rough now but still seems to score the odd goal.

We won the Confederations Cup at the beginning of the season as we beat England 1-0 in the final, unfortunately Moise was no longer on the pitch when we won a penalty late on which was converted by Bassa to send us victorious. We’ll be hoping to go far in the World Cup after we move over to the new season after making a decent start in the earlier rounds.

We’ve reached our target and now we are more or less in celebration mode. He’s still under contract for another three seasons so might still have a few more goals left in him so I’ll have to decide how much further I want to try and keep him going.
