Career Dai's, "It's a long way to the top" challenge *COMPLETED*

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this is in the wrong place or I'm using wrong tags. (Just popping my 'start new topic' cherry) It's my first challenge attempt on FMM20. Always take a lower-league team & attempt to win everything. Usually, Wrexham, Hereford or Newport in previous games. As per the rules of this challenge, I couldn't pick them (unless they became available).

I Was actively looking for my first job. Tried a few League Two teams but they went with other options which freed up, Solihull Moors.

I took the job with them sitting in 10th in the Vanarama National League. Signed a few free agents, nothing overly special as there wasn't very much quality available with my very limited funds.

Managed to pick up a trophy, however.

Performed really well in the league also. Pushing Notts County all the way but ultimately, couldn't catch them so had to go through the play-offs.

Delighted! League football awaits!

Second season, not much movement regarding transfers. No money spent. Just free agents picked up. Hoping my tactics would push me through another League campaign. Abandoned any attempt at cup competitions as promotion is the only success!

Thought I had a very good season but same as previous, couldn't catch eventual winners, Walsall. I'll win a league yet.

An award to go with it. 😁

Financial control never increased even though I managed to get it into the green from January onwards.  Loyalty declined after I applied for jobs at Cardiff & Newcastle. Couldn't resist. 😂 Had every intention of staying put with whatever club I started with just some opportunities come along & there's no stopping yourself. (Glad they both rejected my applications now 😉)

Should have been a career tag not a challenge tag.

Any way really nice start to this challenge and I look forward to seeing how you get on 😀

Doh! Sorry.

Season Three. Daunted by the much bigger & better opposition in League One, I tried to seriously improve the squad & staff. All funds went on upgrading facilities & youth setup (slightly). Still, couldn't attract many better players than I already had. Very frustrating!

Started off awful. Lost five of the first six games. Decided to change formation & style of play completely & results picked up immediately.

Lost in the Semi-Final of the Leasing.com trophy. Not that bothered as I'm still in the promotion over cups mentality. 😇

Still a few games to go. Just had to match Wigan's results to finally win a League Trophy....

Whoo! (Screamed like the great, Ric Flair!)

Led me to another award, of course.

Again, jobs came up that I just couldn't refuse going for. They rejected so from now on, Solihull is my home until this challenge is complete or I give up.

Poor financial control again. Couldn't get out of the red all season. No big deal really. Board & fans are happy. 😁

Fourth Season. Scary biscuits! The Championship. Chairman surely going to back us? Nope. Transfer budget of £6m. Again. Improved facilities & youth setup. Went hunting for bosman's. Picked up a little gem in Josh King. As free transfers go, this would end up quite a deal.

Started him off on the left wing as I had Dan N'Lundulu as a main striker & he banged in 43 goals in the season previous so i had to give him a go. Switched King to striker after about a quarter of the season as were struggling to score & picking up too many draws. King ended up top goal scorer. 33 goals and was the man reason for success. Along with the 22 assists Brad Lyons laid on.

A few handy fixtures saw us make the Carabao Cup semi-final. Losing over two legs to Liverpool, 6-2 on aggregate. Again, promotion over cups was a success.

Was surprised how we ended up smashing this league. At the start  I thought we might sneak the play-offs & had even conceded that I might have to spend another season here. Not to be... we were Champions!!

Personal awards keep coming.

Season Five

Seriously needed to improve the squad for the Premiership campaign ahead. Chairman gave me £60m. Not bad for a newly promoted club. Had to use it wisely though. Went through every other Prenier League team & looked for players I liked that were under-played or had low morale. Managed to sign Maitland-Niles & Shackleton for £12m each. Picked up Andre Green & Rabbi Matondo on bosman's too.

Managed to do better than I expected, yet again.

Now, I thought I had qualified for the Europa League but I noticed at the start of the next season that it wasn't the case. Very disappointed, obviously.

Season Six

It was important to build on an incredible first season in the premiership. Further improvements to the squad were essential. The board gave me £90m to do so.

Again, I scouted through unhappy players from rival teams. Picked up Thilo Kehrer from recently relegated Aston Villa (😲) for £21m. Bargain! Also signed Ben Woodburn from Liverpool for £24m. Mickael Cuisance for £7.75m from FC Bayern where he had hardly kicked a ball in 5 years. Adding solidity at the back, creativity in the middle & fire-power up top.

Worked a treat!1799474145_Screenshot_20191204-104430_FM20Mobile.thumb.jpg.086d23e1cc8a21c2352964f6b7d4ad9e.jpg

Which led to another Manager of the year award.

Now I'm at the point where Solihull Moors need to gain a bit of silverware if this challenge is to be successful.... and we did, in style!

Over the moon with how this is going. Will hopefully have the next season up by the morning. 😁

Again this is jaw dropping work

Tbh, I've always taken lower league teams through back to back promotions on previous games. Usually takes a bit of time once I get to the premiership. Difference this time is that I found the right formation early on so didn't have to tinker to get results. I'm proud of how it's gone but not overly surprised. (I sound really full of myself, don't I? 😔)

I’ve done the same with Aldershot and Wycombe Wanderers but especially at Championship the points tally was a lot lower whilst you just came in and demolished it!

Season 7

While doing well last season I felt we needed to strengthen more, plus add some depth if I was going to compete on all fronts this season. It had been going better than expected so why not try & win everything?!

The board rewarding us with a £120m kitty. Same as previous, I went hunting for players I liked that weren't getting games at their current clubs. Firstly, Kieran Tierney. £33.5m from Everton. He wasn't really under-played there but Everton signed him from Arsenal a year previous. I tried signing him there but he opted for Everton over us (good job I don't hold grudges!). Next, Joe Gomez. He had played a total of 38 games in the previous 4 seasons (😲). Picked him up for a mere £12.25m + a decent youth player with average potential.  Sandra Tonali was next. Unhappy at Juventus. Signed for £21.5m.

That's the defensive stuff sorted. Now to strengthen the attack. No pattern emerging here. Harry Wilson, signed on a bosman. Yes.... FREE! I love this kid. He's going to be massive for Wales in the future so I always look to sign him on FMM. Never usually successful, never mind getting him for free. Next is, Antonio Marin. Another played i used to death in FMM19. Chelsea signed him but after loan spells at Villarreal, Brighton & Leicester (not like Chelsea to stock up on youth & loan them out every season 🤣) we agreed on a £35m fee to sign him.

I always look for new players appearing & snatch them up when 15/16 years old. (Jeez, that sounds bad 🙈) i had a couple ready to break into the first team so that was the end of the signings, until January anywho.

Season started with a bang.

Massive result & a real signal of intent.

League season started well too & by Christmas we were joint top of the League with Man City, who just didn't seem to ever lose. Champions League group navigated successfully also. Lost to Barcelona, twice, 4-2 & 2-1! Beat Ajax twice & Lokomotiv Moscow, twice.

Was hit with injuries during the Xmas period so delved into the transfer market again. Two massive signings! Matteo Geundouzi, who was not playing for Arsenal, at all. Paid £8.25m. Board & fans not happy with that. Wait! What!? Wise up. Also signed, Fiete Arp. One of my all time favourites on the FMM series. He was transfer listed. I only had £12.5m in the bank so had to pay that plus a very promising midfielder for him. Totally worth it. 😁

We made it to the Carabao Cup final, pretty easily. Southampton in our way...

Couldn't manage to defend our FA Cup, though.

Champions League was going well though. Beating Internazionale & Valencia in knockouts rounds before being drawn with our nemesis from the group stage, Barcelona. Managed a 'plucky' 0-0 draw at the Camp Nou. Before bringing them back to Solihull for this....

Real Madrid await us in the final. But first, League matters to attend to.

Final standings:

Inevitable award:

Just the task of playing Real Madrid in the Champions League Final. No big deal? Right!

Not gonna lie. WTF? Whilst I almost pee'd with excitement during this match. I calmed down & remember my screenshot. I pressed continue and recieved....

THIS NEWS! The very next day.

How do you play so quickly? Personally I might play a game or two a day but you’ve just gone through 7 seasons in a week or so!

Had the first few seasons done before I started the thread.
