Posted June 7, 2020 Great write ups Mr Tree, a really good read and I like the idea of using different tactics. Do you have a favourite so far? Also do you watch key moments or text only? I ask as I wondered if any particular tactic was enjoyable to watch. It sounds daft with just dots on the screen but I love watching my teams put together a good move and finish it off. 0 Quote Report Share
Posted June 7, 2020 Nice season there. I know you are running out of seasons but I may have another tactic you could try, I’ll send it over to you tomorrow. 2 minutes ago, smoggy90 said: Also do you watch key moments or text only? I was just thinking about this earlier. I usually go with commentary only but with replays on so I can see how the goals went in. It’s right what you say for me anyway as with some systems the goals can be very nice to watch. On my Liverpool front three system there’s often a lot of interplay between the front three with one if them scoring and another assisting and it is great to watch. I think they just added the skip replay button this year but I may be wrong but I do like that feature as sometimes it’s obvious from the start of the replay what kind of goal it is and then you can just skip it. 1 Quote Report Share
Posted June 8, 2020 Hi. Just came across this thread and it’s a really great read. Love the idea. If you’re still looking for tactics, I started using this but never got round to finishing a season with it. Would love to see how it does with your squad. 0 Quote Report Share

Posted June 13, 2020 (edited) Thanks @Cziffra- I've bookmarked it, still trying to decide which four to use in my last four seasons... Season 26 So as mentioned I was using the forum's "most popular" tactic (by views), a fairly standard 4-1-2-2-1 with a DLP behind two AP's, not something I'm a fan of much (too many tarts in the middle, not enough grit, it feels like... But part of the point was to try new stuff here, so we went for it). It was effective but dull - not many thrashings, and it felt like half of my matches I didn't let the opposition even have a shot in the first half. Here's the final damage: Toby again had injury woes, and I bought two strikers because it felt like I've been struggling for a partner for him for a while. Obviously that didn't matter much here with a lone striker formation. Abraw was the main new guy, an Adebayor regen's regen (!!) - and the tactic specifically mentioned having a hard worker for that role, and this guy is not that, so...... He did alright, but not convincing. I bought a young English DLP too cos my squad didn't have anyone specialised for it - he looked great but got so many 6's in wins, before finally having a good run of form towards the end. Classic DM issues. Not too much in the way of rising stars, and obviously I'm caring less now that I don't have much time to bring them through... I like this centre back but not sure he'll ever muscle past Dutton-Kay or Guilbert, if they stay fit (big if though). And I signed this young winger too who looks useful... No Toby here unfortunately, but two places on the podium: This was my new youth crop, for reference: And we had 9 past or present bees in the England squad at the end of the season - my seven plus Iseguan and Willis. Thanks for reading Edited June 13, 2020 by Mr Tree 0 Quote Report Share

Posted June 24, 2020 (edited) Cheers @Paul186- always appreciated! I've slowed down a bit cos of Life, went a couple of days without even touching the game 😮 But we're back now... Season 27 For this season I used @danK7RNY's 4-3-3 wide formation, on @Cziffra's suggestion: As ever, we started a bit slowly as the team learned the new system, plus the eternal issue of squad transition, but we got rolling and the formation certainly proved to be very effective (although it's far to say my team are awesome by now too). I think we were 29-3-0 in the league before "limping" home with the title in the bag: I won everything else too, beating arsenal in the FA Cup and Champions League (despite my midfielder Targett getting sent off in BOTH games!). This stats screen isn't from either of those, I think it's just the league game, but gives an indication of the dominance of the team and the tactic... My favourite win of the season And on the way to CL glory, this was an imperious 45 minutes: This was the new youth crop, btw - but it's less interesting now, I won't see any of these lads turn 20... The outgoings were more interesting, with two legends retiring... Jesus H, my poor 75-year-old bones! (Although no doubt I've kept myself as fit as a fiddle!) Both fell just short of 500 appearances for me, with loan spells boosting their overall total... Gerson was the other guy ending his career - he got the exact same message as Aarons above i guess they had a joint event! Which meant finally, I had a son! He's not much good And despite the occasional appearance from the bench, the coaching staff remained unconvinced: Here's how he looked at the end of the season: By the way apparently I had this lad in my late 50's - tough times! Squad overview - Cartwright was establishing himself well, being a central or wing option, but then he got a long-term injury. Hargreaves was out for three months or so. Ojebode's become awesome. It's a shame now, with the end in sight, I won't see how some players pan out - this guy looks like he's gonna be a cracker: I had 10 past or present bees in the England World Cup squad - the eight guys in yellow plus recently sold defenders Hetzke and Rooks. I've got three formations, three saved tabs, ready for the last three seasons - not sure which I'll do first, but we'll find out soon... probably! Posted July 2, 2020 (edited) Many thanks @Ian @Cziffra @smoggy90 and @Paul186 - much appreciated! Season 28 For this season, I went with @Dan13l's suggestion of @El Sheim's 4-2-2-2 This wasn't much of a departure for me because it was the same shape I played for the first 20 years of this career, but it's a little different being Narrow, Fast, Expressive, High and All Over, all ways I don't usually play. Youth crop: Pretty irrelevant now. Good news though - 80 years of hurt were finally ended! But no goals for my lads - and indeed, an injury! It didn't matter much cos Toby was finally fading - he only played 5 games and then went to the footballers' graveyard that is Scotland at the end of the season: I never loaned him (you see he got up to speed quickly), so for me he had 621 appearances and 536 goals - pretty decent, although not elite of course... Here's how he looked by the end. Smashed Rooney's England record It was also goodbye to another legend as we let Rich move on cos he wasn't getting games any more: Those were his only loan spells, so for me he had 537 games, 125 goals and 135 assists. He was still pretty decent, I just had better, and no room for sentiment here... Anyway, we had a couple of early losses, but we got rolling. I loved this spell: Worth noting that in both the domestic cup games, as usual now, I didn't play any of the first XI - so the loss at Wembley was a heartbreaker, but they responded well!! And then trounced the Putney scum Here's some match stats, from the Champs League semi: I did struggle a bit with the final though, holding on for dear life before finally prevailing for our seventh CL in a row: My best FOUR wingers were injured in the weeks leading up to the match, so thank god for my strength in depth and prospects (Sheckleford and Bakambu stepped up, with Mikey Tree even coming on off the bench, go on my son!). The defending was more of a problem, wtf - I was playing a young keeper, with my experienced Croatian keeper deciding he didn't want to spend any more than his initial three-year contract in smelly old England. Once he signed a pre deal to go to Portugal, I gave my boys more game-time instead, and they did well... So I don't blame the keeper. Not really sure what went wrong, but we survived! So here's the season summary: And the lads: Goals flying around. I used this tactic first out of my last three cos it had two up-front and I had four or five strikers. Next year I'll use one up front and then the final year will be strikerless, so it's a bit like Survivor now - this year saw Adebayor-regen Abraw get eliminated cos he's just a twat, despite being talented. Chambo, Carty and Lofty will fight for the shirt next year, along with a returning loanee. Conspicuously absent from the above too - Europe's Best Player. Can't get him firing really, but they love him. Maybe he'll get on better as a number 10 next year... 9 past or present bees in the England squad - only five of my own, plus Iseguan, Hetzke, Rooks and Rogers. So two years to go now, and two slightly more interesting formations to try - I'm looking forward to it, hope you are too! Thanks for reading! Posted July 8, 2020 Thanks @Avengiz! @RichDave32- thanks, I appreciate it. Not sure what's next - this was my second 30yr career this season, so I might just stick with short challenges for the rest, but we'll see... I have some ideas in mind, but it all depends... Season 29 For my penultimate campaign, I went for the 3-5-1-1 tactic posted by @Plimmerz92, mainly due to the shape being radically different to anything else I've done recently... I was a bit lazy, both in terms of recruitment and constantly forgetting to push mentality up to Attacking when I needed a goal. We didn't seem as tight at the back as Plimmerz managed, and of course it took some time to get comfortable with the formation, especially working out which midfielders were best to use... When Arsenal beat me in November, they stretched their lead... But over the next 20 games (until I beat them in the return), we went 15-5-0, gaining 11pts on them. We needed to win on the last day to be sure, but we did, relegating West Ham in the process Again, this isn't necessarily indicative of problems with the formation itself, as there's always some transition going on with the squad, plus other factors, etc. I was using my "worst" keeper for a long while (he looks like he'll be good though), and my midfield could be stronger, etc. Still, job done - and we swept Europe aside once again, too: Yarney did enjoy the number 10 role, although Ferrer came back and nabbed "Best Player in Europe" from him by the end of the season: Otherwise, here's the squad overview: Chamberlain had a bad run and then got injured, I think, and young Pleavin came in and took his chance! (Cartwright was away on loan most of the year). Rubbish stats for the wingers compared to usual, with their roles reduced this year. Our new striking sensation: Plus young defender Milner enjoyed his chance in a centre-back trio: I have another couple of rising stars - it's a bit of a shame that we won't get to see how good they'd have turned out... (some red arrows due to a late-season injury) Speaking of "we'll never know", this was my penultimate youth batch, none of whom will ever see their 19th birthday Great year for my impact on the England squad: Eight of my own, plus another SIX old boys! (Rooks, Rogers, Milambo, Iseguan, Hetzke and Willis) I think that's a PB of 14, although I'm too lazy to check now so we'll find out when I post a new snazzy graphic summary after the last season. Thanks as ever for reading - got an interesting strikerless tactic to try for the final season, so please give me a week or so to bang that out while pretending to look after the baby, and then I'll post that and some career summary stuff next time 1 Quote Report Share

Posted July 11, 2020 (edited) Many thanks @Paul186 and @Cziffra, much appreciated! Season 30 So this season I went with an unconventional tactic used to great effect elsewhere by @smoggy90: He shared with me that he couldn't decide between WM and DW in midfield - I found DW better, because in the early games (with WM) the WM's and IF's were standing in the same place defensively. It wasn't a problem going forward, they separated, but it was like playing with nine men in defence! Anyway, it was wildly successful, winning everything except the FA Cup, where my reserves got knocked out. I had plenty of talented wide players, so I loved the tactic. Squad overview: Not sure I've ever had so many lads finish with such good averages. Here's a couple of examples of in-game stats: A last look at the England squad - I managed to get it up to 15 past or present bees, with my seven joined by ex-players Hetzke, Rooks, Loft, Iseguan, Willis, Rogers, Berthonneau and Milambo. I'll be back with some hi-tech graphics to track my presence in the England squad soon (need computer, lazy to get it out now). So that was that... So true. But no mansion on the beach 24 EPL wins in a row And 19 champs leagues is pretty decent, the last 9 consecutively. Not bad really. Far from perfect, but no actual comical choices. Got my youth policy figure up by the end! Spent a billion, net - bit dubious to be honest, because that means I averaged £90m+ in purchases per year, which doesn't seem right. But I guess it's not lying - maybe a couple of splurges skewed the overall figure. Otherwise, you saw the league table, showing that in 30 years the top three teams in the land are current Championship teams. There were two current League One teams in the EPL in the last season, Burton and Sunderland, but both got relegated. Spurs are in the Championship but I didn't find any current Prem teams any lower, except for... Oof! Got a Championship team who would have been facing up to VNL football if we had another season... And there were a few current L1 / L2 teams down in the VNS / VNN, for example @Foxy... The biggest riser I could find were Tamworth: And before I go, cos it's been a little while, a quick look at my boys - just the starting XI for my final ever match, a CWC group match against the Congolese champions, plus the two lads who would have started but missed out due to suspension and injury. Maybe not the best keeper to start with, but he did alright. Signed from Sampdoria for £8m as a 19-year-old, he's played 111 times for me, conceding 79. Excellent CB for many years, slowed by a few injuries this year. Signed from West Ham as a 19yo for £77m, he played 393 times for me, scoring 18 goals. Academy graduate who finally broke through the last two years. Finished with 125 appearances for me (and 6 goals). Quality LB who had to adapt for the last two seasons. Signed from Inter Milan as an 18yo for just £3.5m, he went on to make 222 appearances for me, scoring 14 goals (including one injury-time equaliser to save the Champions League for us) and adding 51 assists. A legend from my academy, he ended with 437 games, 112 goals and 170 assists. Signed for £1m from Plymouth when he was only 18, Buck went on to become a legend, racking up 317 appearances, 149 goals and 85 assists. An academy graduate who's had to bide his time breaking through to the first team, his final figures are 108 games, 28 goals and 26 assists. Signed from Roda JC for £50k before he'd turned 17, he was a useful backup, making 67 appearances with 5 goals and 14 assists. But he was only playing cos Ibu was injured... Carters was another academy graduate who's had more than his fair share of loan spells away, but he did play 157 times for me, ending with 72 goals and 42 assists. Another cracker from my academy, he's struggled to break through but has racked up 51 appearances, 9 goals and 7 assists. But again, only played her cos Dill Mill was suspended... Another from my academy, he's been a faithful understudy and never let me down. Made a round 250 appearances for me, only scoring 7 times but adding 55 assists. Signed from Liverpool for £110m when he was 21, he's had 5 good years with me, with 225 games, 26 goals and 43 assists. Multiple European and World player of the year, including more this season: Signed from Birmingham for £55m just after turning 19, he ended up with 453 games for me, scoring 124 goals and adding 116 assists. So that's 13 of my 37-man squad. For the record, 15 of the other 24 are academy products too. I'll work out the squad value, but I've spent long enough on this so I need to just post it now and come back to it later!! Thanks for reading and for all your support throughout, it's highly appreciated! Edited July 11, 2020 by Mr Tree 0 Quote Report Share
