Career Ian - La Masia Double Trouble - Final Update

Season 4

We move on to season 4 of this double trouble attempt without incoming transfers. This season I was hoping to get Fati to 100 goals before his 20th birthday to get him onto that particular leaderboard and also an improved return from our duo would be welcomed so let’s see how it went.

 

Transfers

We brought three youngsters through from the academy this year with two of them being forwards and one a central midfielder. The two forwards both look very promising and we kind of needed one due to Pérez leaving but I’d really like to get a great young centre back through as if we’re going to go long with this I feel we’ll need better than the younger ones we already have. We’re alright at the moment though and have decent cover in most positions for the next year or two at least.

Race to 100 Goals

I mentioned last time that I wanted to try and get a Fati onto this particular leaderboard but an injury towards the end of last season really put the cat amongst the pigeons and made it rather uncertain. I started this season gunning for that and had him on free kicks, penalties and to the right of my two which is the near post for corners position to see if we could get him to 100 goals before his 20th birthday on the 31st of October. He needed 16 goals and….

He scored the all important 100th goal on the 1st of October which will put him right at the bottom of the leaderboard but I’m happy. It was also rather fitting that it was his strike partner Ruiz with the assist for the all important goal. I always have a go on these occasions at getting a decent live screenshot and this one worked out great. 

 

 

Team Results

The league was won and it was quite similar to all of the seasons so far with similar goals scored and what not and it was Real who we’d battle against in both of the domestic cup finals winning the Spanish Cup but losing out on the Super Cup via a dreaded penalty shootout. We went all the way to penalties in the Champions League semi final too and it was Chelsea that broke our hearts this time so still no Champions League success for us as of yet.

The Duo

It was Fati this year with the bigger hauls with the highlight being this 4-0 victory over Gefate where he scored all of the goals.

 

He hit another three goals in a 6-0 victory over Oviedo a couple of weeks later to put him well on his way to the 100 club goals that he craved.

 

It was Abel with the only injury to one of our two challengers this year as he twisted his ankle in our Spanish Cup final victory over Real Madrid in mid April.

 

Ansu Fati

Fati put up the biggest return of either player so far as he managed much more game time and hit 47 goals in 50 games. He’s developing nicely with his stamina rising all of the time and if we could get that up to green level I’d be very happy.

 

Abel Ruiz

Ruiz with just 30 goals this season but he was hindered a bit by the quest to get Ansu to his 100 goals early on in the season and then his little injury towards the end but all in all I’m happy enough with 77 between them as this was that World Cup in the middle of the season year. Not much to say on his development as you can see he’s looking good and both look good enough to do this but the only question is whether the squad behind them will remain good enough to back them up as we need domination and good team goal returns particularly in the league for to get it done with my system of choice.

Thank you B.L.T. Yeah I’d like a few 100 plus seasons but right now my target is 90 and then I can take it from there. PedrI is good as are a few of the other youngsters I’ve let go but if I can’t give them enough game time I prefer to get rid as it gives me a headache when the squad is massive and I have good cover in most positions. Could come back to haunt me though if I have some squad unrest and end up losing some key players.

Thank you Rob, I’ve put a few limitations on myself and wanted to see if I could complete the challenge that way. There won’t be any massive returns in this though I can’t see and in hindsight maybe I shouldn’t have posted it but I’ve started so I intend to finish it one way or another.

Another great season. Just like Foxy said up there, some huge seasons aren't far away but I think Fati will be really key to that happening. Ruiz seems not to be performing as I thought he would. His attributes are even kind of declining

Thank you Shosky, yeah I think Fati could end up being the main man. Hopefully that little decline for Ruiz was just because he was coming back from his injury but we’ll see next season.

Season 5

On to season 5 now where we hoped to get a better return from our duo, let’s see if we could manage that.

 

Transfers

This was probably the best season for young academy graduates with some nice looking youngsters coming through. Arribas in particular is the most promising out of them all and I think he’ll become a very important player for us in a few years. I’d still like a great young central defender to come though so hopefully one year we’ll get our wish.

Team Results

No problems in the league as we went unbeaten and scored a very nice 140 goals. Things went a bit wild in the Super Cup final though as we ended up losing 7-5 to Atletico Madrid and our long wait for Champions League success will have to continue as Man Utd dumped us out at the quarter final stage. We did win the Spanish Cup though but it wasn’t one of our finest games and you could say we were relatively lucky to come out on top against a tough Seville side.

The Duo

Our boys started the season in fine form.

 

The good form continued and Coutinho is in the AM position so as a three we had some decent stuff going on.

 

Ruiz back on the pens and Fati with one of those in game injuries that turns out not to be an injury post match so we’ll take that.

 

Not really related to our duo but Griezmann damaged his cruciate ligaments in training to put an end to his season and I’m thinking that might be it for him as at his age I’m not sure he’ll feature much when he returns.

 

More quality duo action towards the end of November.

 

Another heavy scoring affair against Red Bull Leipzig in the Champions League.

 

A three week injury to Ruiz followed by a four week lay off for Fati.

 

They returned ok and had one more highlight game towards the end of the season.

 

Abel Ruiz

Abel had a fantastic season finding the net 64 times in just 52 games and also chipped in with 12 assists. He’s looking the real deal now with that movement looking nice, hopefully he maxes that one out over the next couple of years and those high physicals are also pleasing. I haven’t had any problems in terms of unhappiness from either player so far so long may that continue.

 

Ansu Fati

Fati contributed 32 goals and 19 assists so a drop off from last season but considering Abel’s great return I’m more than happy. So a combined total of 96 goals and right where we need to be. It’s easy to forget Fati is still only 21 years old too so plenty of time for him to flourish later on.

Thank you Shosky, I’m not sure exactly how the youth policy works but I’m starting to think it’s based on the age of the transfers you make so although I’ve only been bringing the youth through I’ve also been gradually selling off a good few of the youngsters from the reserve team of which they outnumber the graduates coming in. Might be wrong on that though so it’ll be interesting what happens with that as the years go by.

Season 6

Going into this season we’d scored 969 goals under my management so it was clear we were going to hit the 1000th this year and subsequently qualify for another leaderboard so I’ll start there.

 

The Managers 1000 Goal Challenge

It was Fati who scored the all important goal in a 5-2 victory over Alavéz at the end of September which was rather fitting and it gave us a goal per game ratio of 3.40 and goal difference of 689 so we’re happy enough with that.

Now onto the rest of the season.

 

Transfers

Not a great deal going on here as we just offloaded a few unneeded youngsters, the ageing Griezmann and Wagué who I felt we could let go due to having enough cover in his position. Some of the graduates look decent but still no centre back unfortunately and I think the next few seasons will be transitional as a few of our main players are getting older so we’ll need to try and bring the younger ones through. I’ve included Phil’s shot below as an example and you can see he’s more than likely going to decline shortly along with a few others so the next few years could be key to this as we’ll find out how good the youngsters actually are.

Team Results

We lost out to Atletico Madrid in the Super Cup but got our revenge in the final of the Champions League by beating them on penalties to win our first European Trophy. The other Madrid side were left frustrated as we beat them in the Spanish Cup final with a last minute goal which must have been very hard for them to take. The league went very well indeed as we only drew one game and scored a massive 156 goals and winning the Club World Championship at the end of the season means all we need to win now is the European Super Cup and we’d have won everything we could have except for the Europa League which we haven’t had a chance to play in.

The Duo

The team and the two challengers started the season well.

 

Some double trouble in October as our duo contributed four goals in a 5-0 victory over Sevilla.

 

They went one better at the end of October in scoring all five in another 5-0 victory, this time over Valladolid.

 

They combined again with a brace each in a 4-2 victory over a tough Atletico Madrid side which was pleasing.

 

Abel Ruiz

Abel added another 54 goals to our tally and contributed a decent 21 assists in 61 games to help our cause. We managed to get him tied down for the next five years which is always a relief on these challenges so hopefully we can keep him happy and scoring over the next few years.

 

Ansu Fati

Fati had a great season this year with 52 goals and 16 assists in 61 games and like Ruiz he had an injury free season which always helps. So with that we break the 100 goal barrier with 106 for the season to give us a grand total of 476 for the challenge. We’re well on our way but the next few years where we try to transition the youth through could be pivotal.

Season 7

We had our highest return yet last time out which was largely helped by the rather high amount of games the duo played in due to suffering no injuries. This season we were trying to give some of the younger players more game time basically because we had to with me not allowing myself incoming transfers.

Here’s how the season went.

 

Transfers

We finally got a couple of decent centre backs come through the academy which was a relief and Dembélé finally left at the end of the season which I can’t say was a disappointment as he’s been nothing but a pain in the arse. He’d just kick off over everything and then accept a new deal, be happy for a few weeks and then rinse and repeat. Fabulous player but I’ll certainly never use him again this year unless I’m forced to.

Team Results

We beat Chelsea in the European Super Cup early on in the season only for them to get their revenge later by dumping us out of the Champions League at the semi final stage. We lost out to Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup which seems to have become a regular thing yet we were victorious against their city rivals Real in the Spanish Cup final. The league was comfortable but unfortunately we just couldn’t score anywhere near the quantity of goals as last year and we dropped from 156 to 125 which was disappointing.

The Duo

Our duo didn’t set the world alight this season but it was Fati with the two best moments with a couple of nice hat tricks.

 

We had another good season in terms of injuries to the duo as only Abel suffered a rather short spell in the treatment room.

 

Abel Ruiz

Just 42 goals for Abel this season and 13 assists as we struggled to get the required dominance. He should be hitting his peak years now but unfortunately for him it’s looking like the rest of the squad are very much not.

 

Ansu Fati

Ansu also dropped off with just 34 goals and 16 assists in the 57 games that he played in. We extended his contract at the beginning of the season but we’ll need to keep him longer than that if we are to do this. The drop off in goals this season is frustrating and I know my system isn’t perfect but I know we can hit those 90+ returns provided the squad is kind of right and I’m still confident that the younger players will develop into good enough players so I’m not going to change much at this stage. Fati is 23 years old and Moriba who is another great youngster from the original starting squad is of a similar age. He’s also now a key player and whilst he’s great I’m sure he’ll be even better when he gets to 25-30 and we’ve got some other nice graduates who we are developing well and I think there should hopefully be enough quality there but it’s just a matter of waiting until they come of age I feel. If not we’ll have to hope both players play on until a good age especially Ruiz with him being the older of the two.

Thanks Lord Danish, yeah the drop is frustrating but I’m fairly optimistic that we can get back to the higher numbers over the next few years. Moriba is fantastic but still a little young, I’ll post his screenshot up later but it’ll have to be my season 9 update as I’ve played beyond 8 now.

Thanks Shosky, the drop was annoying and I could feel it coming straight away as we just weren’t quite as dominant. Hopefully we can get back to those days and if so with still enough time for the boys to hit their target.
