Brazil 2002 Tactic (3-4-1-2)

Here’s my first attempt at a tactic, inspired by Brazil in the 2002 World Cup. I’ve tested this with Fulham for five seasons – half of those using a 3-4-2-1 and the other half using a 3-4-1-2. And it is the 3-4-1-2 which saw the best results, hence the title.

Control was decent, but I went to Attacking as we worked our way up the league. Expressive creative freedom was a legacy of my first tactic leaving a huge gap at CM, but it’s an excellent team-oriented approach. I put on Work into Box if I feel my team is too wasteful.

Spoiler

This game vs. Liverpool might be the best representation of the tactic.

BastoniDiaz.gif.2d8aff429f29b21177f0e1ef1f5f51fd.gif

With no full backs, left CD (Bastoni) provides the width. He sidesteps the Liverpool right winger’s press and plays it out to the left DW (Vinagre). Vinagre, the DM (Gedson) and DF (Shabani) form a nice triangle, before Shabani feeds the Poacher (Diaz). No one comes near Diaz and he gets the easy goal.

As hinted in the GIF above, we also lose our ace Camavinga to a red card after 58 minutes. Liverpool have a chance to come back, but instead concede another as we Slow down the tempo and go Direct in the shape below.

Results

Spoiler

Our first half season with this 3-4-1-2 resulted in a 5th place finish (2021/22).

In the 2022/23 season, we cleaned up in the Cups. Far too many draws in an unsuccessful title chase was the trigger to shift from Control to Attacking.

In the 2023/24 season, we finally won the Premier League, but went out in all Cups on penalties.

That shows there is much work to be done, but considering we won the league while playing some great football, it’s surely worth a try.

Looks like an interesting setup. Just wanted to know that who scored the most and with a world class team how much would your strikers score?

Now that's an interesting setup! I like it.

Curious why you have hidden it all though?

Thanks, the Spoilers were added to keep things tidy.

Moise Kean (poacher) has been top scorer for the past two seasons. Had a few minor injuries though, so hasn't played that much. Mitrovic, Kieron Bowie, Meritan Shabani all chipping in.

DWs seem to have most assists, but again very spread out. Amiri was mental, but as you see from the green > he was angling for a move. He's off now, but Ander Barranextea seems like a great replacement. Green Crossing, Technique and Strength seem to do the job.

New season, so far so good, but no real itch to play on as we've won almost everything. Will eventually return to this though as I want to complete 30 seasons.

Looks like a great return there. DW certainly a useful role
