Gotta Get Me Some ZZZ’s

Welcome to my latest career where I intend to bore you all to sleep.

Right, the challenge I’m going for here is The Strikers Peak Years Challenge created by @Foxy. The challenge states that you have to use a player between 24-29 years old at the beginning of the save and his goals and assists over five seasons will be your score total. You can even use multiple challengers of up to four in a single save so plenty of ways to go about it.

I had an idea to go to Portugal for this with a player from a stronger league and whilst conducting my searches I stumbled across Wilfried Zaha who I really fancied trying. Benfica was my chosen team and after setting everything up I went about trying to sign my chosen player. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get him or whether it’d take too much funds but luckily I got him with no real problem as part of a player exchange deal. I was all set but unfortunately whilst searching for Zaha I also stumbled upon Simone Zaza who is another decent forward so you can see where I’m going with this. Anyway, I then tried to sign him too and again I managed to get him as part of a nice player exchange deal so we now had two players each with surnames beginning with Z. Now for some reason I was then convinced I needed a third to make up a trio and I also wanted to go one behind and two up top as I have a decent system for that so needed an attacking midfielder. There weren't a great number of players available with surnames beginning with Z but luckily I found my man so read on to find out who he is as I confirm my challengers.

Wilfried Zaha

Decent player in the real world although a touch inconsistent for me. I’ve never used him on the game before but he has some nice attributes and I’m keen to see how he gets on here in Portugal. At 26 years old I feel he’s ideal for this challenge and the plan is to use him as an advanced forward on the left of a front two.

Simone Zaza

Another steady player and slightly older at 28 years old so I’m not sure how many good years he actually has left in him. He’ll be going to the right of Zaha in my front two as a poacher.

I know one thing though; I won’t be standing for any of this sort of malarkey!

Arber Zeneli

My wildcard who could well make or break this whole attempt. In the real world he plys his trade at Reims in France but that’s as much as I know as I’ve never heard of him. At just 24 years old there’ll hopefully be a bit of growth left in him so he may surprise us and with him not being a striker and not going to play as a striker he’ll also qualify for the non striker leaderboard.

So that’s my three challengers who will be gunning for goals and assists individually and as a unit for the three player leaderboard.

Thanks for reading, I’ll be back later with the next update.

Thank you Foxy, yes most will know of the main two I’m sure but I haven’t seen much of them on the forum and Zeneli should be an interesting player as I have no idea what’ll happen with him.

Season 1

So after revealing my chosen players we cracked on and now we’re into the second season so it’s about time I updated you all on how the first season went.

Tactic

I’m going with my front three set up as below with five across the midfield and two central defenders. The system is very similar to my Liverpool front three tactic but this time I’ve gone with the advanced forward on the left and the poacher on the right which in turn means we have a right footer on the left and a left footer on the right which wasn’t actually intentional, sounds good though! I’ve cut the screenshot to show only the front three because I’ve since gone on to season two and forgot to take the screenshot at the beginning of season one so didn’t want to show it from season two as it would spoil things with transfers and stuff. I will show the full roles later on though and very possibly on the season two update. I’m fairly confident the front two will do okay here like this but my wildcard in the Treq role is the concern and if he isn’t so good I’ll be switching him to an SS which I personally find better in my systems if the player isn’t of the standard required.

Transfers

A wee bit of transfer action here as I brought in a mixture of tried and tested players and some new (to me) faces. Scott McKenna has finished his self isolation period so I allowed him out of my cupboard to join me on this journey and the plan was for him to prop up the defence alongside Rúben Diaz. A few wide players came in with James Forrest from Celtic expected to be my first choice on the right of midfield and Hernâni and Hahn were brought in as back up options with the former playing second fiddle to Grimaldo on the left and the latter as a decent option on both sides as he’s comfortable in both positions out wide. We went after Doucouré from Watford to be a first choice central midfielder and I think he looks like he’ll be very good in this league and he’s right in the middle of his peak years so I was happy to be able to get him. Veltman and Girotto were brought in as back up options at centre back and I believe I’ve used Veltman before, not sure where but I think he’ll be steady. Girotto is totally new to me and also looks good for that kind of money, I was tempted to bring in Jordan Willis from Sunderland as he did well for me previously even at English Premier League level but not sure he’d be so good in only a two man defence so decided to go a different way.

Team Results

The cup competitions were quite frankly a disaster as we failed to win any of them. We couldn’t do anything in our Champions League group which included us getting humiliated away to Inter which I’ve included under the spoiler and when we finished third in the group I was happy as that’d give us a better chance in the knockout stages but unfortunately it didn’t pan out that way as Ajax kicked us straight out of the Europa League with the all important winning away goal coming in the last minute of the second leg. Highly frustrating but our league form was grand as we went unbeaten with only three draws. I take full responsibility for those cup disasters as it became rather clear early doors that I’d underestimated the rate at which the fixtures pile up here in Portugal so our squad was just not big enough to cope which resulted in me kind of prioritising the league. We aren’t far away though I don’t think and the aim is to fare better in all competitions next year.

The ZZZ’s

I had no idea who to go with as my penalty taker and after much deliberation I decided to start with Zaha which didn’t last long as he proceeded to miss two in this preseason friendly.

Our wildcard picked up a little injury before we even started, he was back before the first competitive game though and that would turn out to be his only injury all season so looks like he’s somewhat robust.

Zaha pulled up with a little injury towards the end of September that would keep him out for a few weeks and that would be that as far as injuries to our challengers went.

We had a nice moment here which included some inconsistent penalty action from Zaza, I’ve been rotating between the front two for penalties where I just let one go and then when he starts missing I put the other one on them. They both seem average at best so I may well put Zeneli on them next season.

All three of our Z’s got on the scoresheet together for the first time in this high scoring affair, hopefully more of this to come later.

Wilfried Zaha

Wilfried contributed 24 goals and 35 assists to both his and our cause. For some reason his attributes dropped a bit during the season and then rose again towards the end to more or less the same state they were in at the beginning.

Simone Zaza

Zaza was our main goal scorer as he found the net 54 times and chipped in with a further 10 assists. He’s the near post corner man with him being on the right and Zaha is first choice corner taker so there was a good bit of that action going on which really helps both guys improve their tally’s.

Arber Zeneli

Zeneli started out fairly poorly which prompted me to switch him to the SS role but by New Year he seemed to be improving so I put him back to the Treq role and he seemed better during the second half of the season. He ended up with 18 goals and 20 assists which I’m happy with especially as he seems to be improving fairly decently.

Thank you Frimpong, we’ve made a nice enough start and hopefully we can continue this on and get a bit more success in the cups.

I like the ZZZ theme! Nice angle. Never used any of these players, so interested to see how they go.

Great first season. Maybe Zaha lost some attributes from the injury and then got them back later? Anyway, all the guys did really well, so can't wait to see what they do next year.

Thank you Scratch, yeah I think the drop might’ve been from his injury, it was his movement in particular that dropped to around 14 I think. I’ve got his training focus on movement and in the last month of the season it rose all the way back up to 16.

Season 2

We made a good start to the challenge in the first season in terms of our ZZZ’s but our team results were less than satisfactory as we’d had a rather poor season in the cup competitions. I’d put the reason for the poor cup showings down to not going in with a big enough squad so my focus this year was to improve the squad in a bid to fare better in all competitions so let’s see if we could.

Transfers

The main outgoing was Dias who actually left in January and whilst I’d have preferred to have kept him it was becoming increasingly obvious weren’t going to be able to as we’d had a few offers previously, managed to decline them, keep him happy but this offer of £79m from Liverpool was just too good to turn down and I was confident I could bring in a decent replacement so he went to Liverpool. We spent around half of the Dias fee on Söyünchü from Leicester who looks like he’ll be a decent replacement. We also tried to upgrade our backup centre back options as both Veltman and Girotto who I’d bought at the beginning left to be replaced by Bednarek and Dean and I was fairly confident we had improved in that area. I was happy to be able to bring in Keita who I’ve found does a good job at practically any role in centre midfield and a couple of decent wide players came in in Hernández from Norwich and Martínez from Atlanta City and Nardi should make a decent backup goalkeeper and I think I might’ve used him in last years Vibe World Cup. A good few left to help fund those new signings with Gedson Fernandes leaving at the end of the season having been on loan at Spurs for the first two seasons and for some reason he has gone to both Spurs and Juventus which is quite typical of this game so you can only laugh I guess. So with those new signings and a few decent players coming back from being out on loan for the first season I was confident we’d done some good deals and improved the squad.

Team Results

I was on a mission to improve our cup results and that’s exactly what happened in one of my favourite seasons on this year's game. I think it was because we were so poor the first season in the cups that made the second seem so good but anyway the only two games we lost were these two below.

Spoiler

In fairness we had a fairly easy run to the Champions League semi final but then we faced off against Liverpool who had comprehensively beaten us in the away tie of the group stage as you can see above and whilst we did manage a win in the home game I was expecting they’d do us here to be honest. They didn’t and we won fairly comfortably to set up a final against PSG which we also won relatively comfortably.

So all competitions won and we’ll face PSG in the semi final of the Club World Championship as soon as we switch over to the new season and no doubt they’ll be looking for revenge from us beating them in the Champions League final. The thing about this though is that there’s still a few areas I was looking to improve on in the squad but I have to be careful now as I could easily take us backwards if I’m not careful because we looked good as is this year. On the other hand the Champions League success might turn out to be a fluke so a bit of a conundrum for me as I try to work out what transfers I’m going to make before the start of the next season.

The ZZZ’s

Some little injuries for Zeneli and especially Zaza but the increase in games due to us performing better in the cups meant they both ended up playing in more games than last time out.

And another one here which I personally liked the best as all three of our ZZZ’s got on the scoresheet.

Wilfried Zaha

Wilfried had an improved campaign as he found the net 36 times and assisted another 35 goals to give him a season total of 71. He’s 28 now and his attributes especially movement seem all over the place as it’ll just decline for no reason and then increase again. Anyway, hopefully he’ll stay relatively decent for the full five seasons.

Simone Zaza

Simone ended up with 41 goals and 18 assists so a touch down on last year but he did suffer a few little injuries throughout the season which could’ve hindered him from a consistency perspective so we’re happy enough. He’s 30 years old now and I’m not overly confident he’ll remain so good for the duration of this but we can only hope he at least stays decent for the next couple of years anyway.

Arber Zeneli

Arber who was my wildcard continued his improvement and managed 38 goals and 24 assists which is a nice increase from his opening season return and being the youngest of our challengers it’s easy to see him becoming the main man by the time we end things after season five.

183F6FFE-FDBF-4864-A59F-4008B198D0E4.thumb.jpeg.25aeee989ff97aa6027646ce9aef5da1.jpeg

So that’s 192 in total for our trio this year which I’m happy with but regardless of the score I’m just enjoying playing it as I’ve got a half decent system that I’ve worked hard to get right and it’s interesting to see how the three players are getting on in this league.

Player Stats

The three were well amongst both the goals and assists so long may that continue.

Nice couple of seasons...the old classic two man back line! 🤣

Zaha was pretty good for me when I used him in my bosses challenge. Solid striker.

You can always rely on big money for Dias.

I am using Benfica for my late bloomer challenge currently, tough to start as they have so many players you need to shift before you can make the squad your own. Takes a few transfers windows.

Thank you Danovic, the system makes a bit of a mockery of the match engine but it works well although things can get a bit wild with a lesser team. I tested something similar with Southampton just with the starting squad and letting the a.i pick the team before each game and we got to January before getting the sack, we were the top scorers in the league mind but had conceded about a million 😂 With a few transfers and picking the right team we may have done ok though I guess.

First time I’ve used Zaha and I like him, I think this is a really good league for him too.

Good luck on your late bloomers attempt, I’m going to do that one too but haven’t decided on my player or team yet. I struggled in the first season here and I think it was because I went in with too small a squad. This season was much better but the Champions League success might turn out to be a fluke and I still think there’s plenty of work to do with the squad.
