Career Rob tries the Peak Year Challenge - Season 5 - The End

Introduction

I wanted to give @Foxy‘s funky new Peak Years challenge a go. It’s here if anyone wants to see it:

Basically, you play the first five seasons of a save and your score is total goals plus assists for your player(s).

I have opted to use three players for this, with the scores contributing to the leaderboards for three sets of one player, three sets of two players, and one set of three players. And a partridge in a pear tree.

Had Liverpool not have been awarded such a dodgy penalty in last year’s Champions League final Spurs would have no doubt taken their place and romped the Premier League this year and solidified their position as the best team in the world, so I figured I would take over The Mighty Tottenham Hotspur to try and right the wrongs of refereeing past.

 

 

For the three lads I decided to use players already at the club.

One of these is blatantly obvious and is one of the best strikers in the game. You just got Kaned.

Next up is the smiliest lad in the world. I’ve always thought he smiles a lot as he isn’t having to play for that pile of turd over at the Emirates Museum. 

And last, but no means least, is last year’s Champions League hero. A beautiful player.

All three will play in the top line. Kane will be on penalties and free kicks, so I have no doubt he will score the most. Moura will be on corners, so will no doubt assist the most. Son will be somewhere on the middle and hopefully he will score more wonder dribbles like last season’s GREATEST GOAL EVER.

It’s a world class team. But, being serious, Kane is the only upper most class player used?

Oh shush. Premier League is hard. I’d be expecting huge scores from teams in the likes of Spain which are much easier leagues.

Season 1 of 5

Targets

I had two targets for season one:

• Keeping employment as Tottenham’s manager. First season’s are notoriously hard;
• Champions Cup qualification. My tactic is setup to score goals and assist, but not necessarily to win everything. Man City and Liverpool are the obvious main threat, but Chelsea, United, and, for some reason, Arsenal also offer a threat

 

Transfers

I took the option to sign Lo Celso. He is an excellent attacking playmaker in the centre of the pitch. Saul is one of my favourite players as he can play on several positions and does well everywhere. Brekalo, Sisto, and Kostic were to be my wing options at a club that only owns one real winger - Moura - who I am using as a top line IF. Lodi is a solid left sided player and Jonny can cover a few defensive positions. Deadwood left.

 

Team Performance

We reached the Quarter Finals in each of the Cups and came second in the league. We struggled a lot during the middle portion of the season, but the squad really started to perform as it went on to the extent that Barcelona knocked us out of Champions League in a game we dominated.

 

Player Performance

The boys did fairly well with the goals and assists.

They bagged 101 goals between them and 60 assists, which gives us 161 for season one.  A solid start and hopefully one that can be improved upon in season two when the squad is stronger.

Nice choice of player. I think it will be fascinating to see how using better players in a tougher league goes vs using 'lesser' players in an easier lower league. That sort of thing is always fascinating to me. 

A good first season, although 3 quarter-finals gave me a laugh. That's not the sort of treble you are looking for! 🤣

Anyway, great start and I'm sure there is even more to come next year.

Yeah, I did wonder that. Also, if you have a great club but lesser players it’ll allow you to spend more money on the rest of the team, so maybe that’ll be better?

Season 2/5

Transfers 

A few more pieces of deadwood left that I could not shift in our first season, with Quintero moaning and leaving for a decent profit. Puado was a standard ‘sign free, sell for money’ deal.

With a healthier transfer budget and unspent cash from last season I did a whole bunch of part-exchange plus sell-on deals for a few big names. Gimenez, Oblak (who was transfer listed, believe it or not), Dilrosun, and Dest all came in to play a part in either of my starting elevens.

Team Performance

I wasn’t going to post big updates with this career, but the Champions League run was hilarious and I thought it was worth mentioning.

First knock-out phase. 7-6 on aggregate after extra time. Kane scored five.

We win the quarter final 4-3 on aggregate. Goals in the 90th and 94th minute knock out Liverpoop.

In the semi-final we draw 4-4 in the second leg to win 6-5.

At this point I was thinking our name must be on the trophy. We drew PSG in the final and battered them with shots, but only scored one goal in a draw... and then lost on pens.

Meh.

However we did do the domestic treble in season two, grabbing the Premier League title with only 88 points (City and Liverpool weren’t as monstrous as season one) and also picking the Carabao and FA Cups. The league title was a season in advance of when I had hoped, so I was massively chuffed with that. The CWC was at the end of the season, with the knockouts to be held in season three.

 

Player Performance

188 points this season, giving us a total so far of 349.

Harry is obviously running away with the goals, with Moura smashing in the assists. Son has not done as well as I’d hoped at all.
