Destroying it Ian. Mighty Milan is heroic.

Thank you Rob, he’s been brilliant and his leadership is still rising so hopefully that’ll max out in the final season.

Oh wow, he's getting better with age! That's just fantastic mate, well done.

Hope you don't get the Shock Retirement thing in the offseason! 😄

Nah, I'm sure he'll be back and you'll have one more glorious season with him.

Thanks Scratch, he better not go and retire on me now as that would be hard to take 😂

It would be nice to win the Champions League to round things off but it’ll be a tall order with this system I think and I ain’t going to change it at this stage.

Haha, I know that feeling! Had Colidio go and shock retire on me 7 goals short of 1.5K (when I'd never done that before). If ever I was tempted to reload it was then...

Yes must’ve been horrible that one. I wonder if the shock retirement thing even exists now as I’ve never encountered it on either this or last years game and I didn’t really play the 18 game enough to know about that one.

Anyway, I know what happened now as I’ve finished the season and should have the update ready for later today.

Yeah, that would have been 18. I haven't seen it since, so maybe that is no longer in the game. Or then again, I don't think it had happened to me before either, so maybe it is just an incredibly rare thing. Glad it didn't happen to you, and look forward to the update mate.

Season 6

Milan only needed two goals to reach his and our target this season and it’d have been a total disaster if he failed so rather than start with the transfers, team results and what not I thought I might as well just get straight to the business of Baros and his two goals.

Baros scored in the opening cup game leaving him only one short of his target.

He then failed to score in the first league game against Trabzonspor but made no mistake in the second one against Yeni as he produced one of his trademark 25 yard free kicks to reach his and our target.

Now we’ll start the full update of the final season to see how Baros and the team bowed out.

Transfers

Not a massive amount of business as even though a lot of our main players are reaching or have reached 30 this would hopefully be the last season so I didn’t see any point in making wholesale changes and felt the ageing players had one good decent season left in them.

A brief description of the incomings;

Giorgi Chakvetadze - A new Georgian playmaker who can also play the attacking midfield position so a good option. He cost a hefty amount but as we didn’t need to do much business I felt I could go big on one player.

Murat Sağlem - I felt we needed cover for the right wing and this guy seemed ok plus it had the added benefit of weakening one of our rival clubs Fenerbahçe.

Bryan Oviedo - A decent attacking midfielder who ended up not being used very much. Still looks a decent player though.

Thilo Kehrer - A new central defender who can also play in midfield.

Erkan Süer - I brought this guy in knowing it’d be unlikely he’d feature much unless we had an injury crisis and we didn’t so he never really played. He was a half decent looking AP though.

Edgar Álvarez - We needed a backup goalie and I checked who we could get for free and this guy popped up. He ended up as our number one keeper for the second half of the season after our other goalie had a few poor games in the early part of the season so I took him out.

After doing well in last seasons Champions League we were hoping for something similar or even possibly going all the way and winning the thing. It didn’t go well at all though as we had a poor group stage and ended up in third place to drop into the Europa League knockout stage. Baros did score a couple of goals though which was at least something.

The Europa League went well as after beating Valencia, Lyon, Fiorentina and Spurs we found ourselves in the final to play CSKA Moscow. We were confident going into the game and just about got the job done to win our second Europa League title. It’s a shame we couldn’t quite claim the Champions League but with the system I’m using it’s no real surprise I’d say.

Milan Baros

A very fun challenge and now Milan can sail off into the sunset and enjoy his retirement.

I’m not quite finished yet though as I’ll be back with one more update where I plan to go through the tactic and explain what I look for in terms of attributes for each role. I may also explain how I go about managing the squad in terms of rotation so look out for that over the week or so if you’re interested.

Thank you all for following along and a big thanks to those who also dropped the odd comment, it’s highly appreciated.

Fantastic work @Ian Been an interesting read over the last couple weeks mate

Well done on smashing this challenge, some very low attributes he has now but you managed to stick with it and reap the rewards

I'm quite curious , do you watch commentary only during games or watch as much of the match as you can?

Be interesting your next article to see the tactics and your thoughts process over which attributes you feel are best and be a good insight into how you manage squads to get the best out of them

Look forward to it!

I’ve seen Smoggy has suffered a sudden retirement in his Late Bloomer attempt so it must still be a thing.

Yeah he’s very rough and almost as rough as you’d think he could get. I did go for a system with plenty of players around him and with the idea that we’d win lots of free kicks around the box and penalties. Of course he’s still got to score a few of them and luckily enough he was very good at pens and also decent at free kicks so it worked out well.

I usually watch the highlights if I’m testing something as it can show some things like if you’re losing the ball in a certain area of the pitch, stuff like that. On this system if there’s not enough movement in the attacking third you’ll see the ball go to one of the wingers and he’ll struggle to pick out a pass and constantly lose the ball which will often lead to conceding with only having two centre backs back there. It’s easy to think it’s the defenders or midfielders in defensive terms that’s the problem but it’s often the other end that’s not up to it with a lack of movement in certain roles and the AP one in particular here. On this career I had my system and just watched highlights on the first few games then it was back to commentary mode but with replays on so I can see how the goals are being scored but plenty of them end up being skipped straight away in truth.

I’ll write a bit about the system mainly because it’s a bit unusual and even with top teams can be hard to get working. I’m still learning things all the time with it but I feel that since I’ve posted the tactic I should try and explain things about it in detail to give anyone who might try it the best chance of getting it to work.

1 hour ago, Rob said:

Well done @Ian - great stuff.

Thank you Rob, he’s done well but I feel I’ve been lucky with his ability from the spot and at free kicks as both have helped us tremendously here. It’s something I looked for straight away and once I seen him scoring them regularly I knew there was a good chance we could do it.

55 minutes ago, Foxy said:

Nicely done Ian with no little amount of patience needed I’m sure to get those goals.

Thank you Foxy, it was strange as after the first couple of years I just felt the only way he wouldn’t eventually hit the target would be if he retired on me as even when he’d go on little runs without scoring you always felt he’d come up with a goal or two at some point. He can now hobble over and join Roy the boy for cocktail.

Great work Ian. I gotta say I was a little doubtful at first, but he's done real well. Could probably keep going too. 🤣

Looking forward to the tactics breakdown too. Sounds like they were just right for this sort of challenge (even if it make the CL harder).

Thank you Scratch. Yeah the first season I was hoping for more before he really declined but I saw enough to think he could keep the 20-30 returns up so I guess it was just hoping he’d play on long enough and luckily he could.

It’s not the greatest system for results but can work well for certain targets. It’d be interesting to see how a prime top quality striker would do in this system. I may do a little test on that to go with the next post.

15 hours ago, Kanegan said:

Great read this one Ian. The way you managed Baros with those stats is impressive.

Thank you Kane, he was poor but luckily he could score reasonably well from free kicks and exceptionally well from the spot. Plus I’m this league he did score a few from open play so I’m not how he’d have done in a top league.

Great achievement @Ianand a fantastic total for Baros at the end. Congrats!

Thank you Smoggy, nice to get him on the leaderboard. It’s a similar concept to the Lord Bendtner and Shane Long challenges that I did previously and enjoyed. I may try this again with another player if I find an interesting player and club. I was working out all the countries I’ve managed in this year and there aren’t that many I haven’t been in so I might try and do a challenge in each of the remaining ones.

Conclusion

A very fun challenge and now Milan can sail off into the sunset and enjoy his retirement.

I’m not quite finished yet though as I’ll be back with one more update where I plan to go through the tactic and explain what I look for in terms of attributes for each role. I may also explain how I go about managing the squad in terms of rotation so look out for that over the week or so if you’re interested.

Thank you all for following along and a big thanks to those who also dropped the odd comment, it’s highly appreciated.

Well done Ian. Unbelievable results great job  :)
