Looking good mate! They will surely get better and better. Loving seeing IFs score so much, I always go for the boring TM / AF route...

I think Slow is underrated. I experiment with it every so often and it doesn't seem to lead to less chances or goals - or at least not a lot, I sort of think that you might get less chances, but better quality ones, but I haven't been able to prove that happens at all.

As for Donnarumma, haven't had much luck with him this year. He's decent, but not great and I generally end up selling him. He just seems to let through more goals than I'm expecting. Haven't had him complaining too much though. I had him play every second game for a couple of years and he was fine with it. If it was more than one game out, then he quickly got upset, but not if it was every second game.

Thank you Scratch, it’s a different thing for me too but it does seem like they can score a good few goals. None of them ever go to the near post for corners though which holds them back slightly which is something those who’ve tried strikerless will know all about.

I dint mind slow as it seems to work ok, the only thing I was concerned about here was that we may end up with everyone around the box with the central players then getting too many shooting opportunities from the edge of the box. It’s in my mind to maybe try a faster tempo so I will do at on my test saves and if it shows promise I’ll go for it on here.

I’m not sure what I’ll do with Donnarumma now as he’s unhappy and won’t sign a new contract. I’ve still got Courtois though and he’s probably got a few years left in him so I may well get rid of Donna and just get a reasonable player as our backup.

Great start Ian and the lads are looking great so I don’t think a 100 goal season is too far away.

Season 3

This season wasn’t particularly great in many ways so rather than delay the build up, I’ll just crack on with the transfers.

Transfers

Not much business this year as the squad seemed in a good place. After season one, right wing back Hakimi came back from spending the first season out on loan and he looked very good so he was retrained to the wide midfielder role and was rotated with Trent and occasionally Saúl during last season. This caused me to use Saúl more often on the left as a back up to Robertson, simply so Saúl played enough games to keep him happy. Of course, that then meant Gaya who was my original second choice to Robbo wasn’t used anywhere near enough so my plan was to sell him which we ended up doing. I overlooked the fact that Hakimi was out of contract at the end of the season so I went into the market for a right wide midfielder and ended up using Gaya as a makeweight in a deal to bring in Max Aarons who was playing for Man Utd. He cost a lot more than I’d have liked to have paid but felt he was the best option and a good age at only 21. I did end up with some dreaded moaning as Brozovic kicked off over game time so he was offloaded in January with Tonali coming in to replace him and Emre Can left at the end of the season with my plan being to bring in a younger replacement to develop next year.

Team Results

We went backwards this year with our worst league campaign yet and lowest amount of league goals scored as my tactical tweak seemed to really hinder our results at times. We did manage to win the Super Cup with a great win over Liverpool and added the Copa del Rey to our trophy cabinet but that was it and largely not so great of a season so hopefully at least our duo have done better.

Manager

We’ve had our first attribute drop to below 10 and it’s discipline that’s let me down. I probably forgot to fine someone a week's wages for getting sent off or something like that.

This was the best game for our duo and it was Rod who was the one who was well in amongst the goals.

A combined 77 goals for the duo this time out and in less games played than last year so not quite as bad as I’d initially thought to be honest. Milinkovic-Savic is my first choice attacking midfielder so he’s always going to score a few, yet he’s a good way behind the two inside forwards in terms of goals and below him we have Bernardeschi and Williams who are the backups to our duo so the bulk of the goals are certainly going to the inside forward position but it just seems like if they both have an off day in this current system, everything then becomes a bit limp.

Tactics

The only change I made this year was to go with a faster tempo with the hope that it might help us get the ball to the inside forwards a bit quicker rather than delay the build up allowing the more central players to get chances of shots around the edge of the box. In some ways it’s working well when you look at how many of our goals are going to the inside forwards but there’s just not enough goals in general. The central midfielders don’t seem to shoot much at all which was what I wanted but I feel they may be the problem when it comes to results as we scored much more team goals in the first season with them as box to box midfielders. I think next season I’ll go with at least one of them as a box to box midfielder and see if that gives us a bit more edge as those 0-0’s are no good at all.

Nice season Ian, unlucky in the champions league there. The boys are looking very decent now, they should go from strength to strength.

Season 4

Welcome to the season four update of this double trouble inside forward career. This was the year when the World Cup is held midway through the season so often a slog but I actually found it ok and it didn’t feel much different to a usual season in Spain to be honest. I did make a couple of tweaks to the system which I’ll explain at the end after I go through everything else.

Brazil

Brazil had a shocking World Cup so decided they wanted a new manager, so I applied and got the job. I eventually (nearly forgot) checked my two players to see how many international goals they’d already scored and discovered that Rod hadn’t yet had a full international cap but Vini had and had scored five goals so should be easy enough to work out. I went through the whole squad removing every player and picking a full new squad to try and get rid of the U21 bug and it worked. The board expects us to reach the semi final of the next World Cup so with any luck, we’ll get four years at least in the job.

Club

Back to the club business now, starting with the transfers.

Transfers

I wasn’t sure what to do with Donnarumma; it was either try to offer him a new deal and then commit to using him as our number one or sell him. I decided before the season that I’d try to go with the first option but when I went over into the new season, there was a well rated young goalkeeper in our youth graduates line up so I changed my mind, decided to keep the youngsters to slowly develop and got rid of Donna. The only other major business was Camavinga who was the player I brought in to replace the outgoing Emre Can which was something I said I was going to do on the last update. There’s a glitch too whereby occasionally the game takes all of the academy players through even though you didn’t want them as I’m pretty certain I rejected everyone except the budding new keeper, yet here we are with about half a dozen on this list.

Team Results

A much better league season this year as we were much more dominant and scored much more goals than in the previous two years. Barcelona knocked us out in the fifth round of the Copa del Rey on penalties but we won the Supercopa and beat Bayern in the Champions League final to round off a somewhat successful season and it was certainly pleasing to get our goal return a lot higher.

I’d consider this to be the highlight game as it’s the first somewhat high scoring game so far where all of the goals have gone to the inside forward position. Of course, their sending off in the first half must’ve surely helped.

The team scored more goals this season so you’d think that that would mean our duo scored much more goals but unfortunately that wasn’t the case as all they could muster was a combined 83 at club level. Add on their seven goals for Brazil and we arrive at 90 which makes things seem much better. I was hoping I’d be able to do this without international and still want to get the 1,200 target at club so we’ll need a jump up from these returns otherwise we’re in for the long haul or failure with that target.

Both look great but my concern now is their shooting as I really think if I could get both of them up to 18 plus for that attribute then more of the team goals would go to them. I could’ve tried to improve their aerial which would’ve probably helped a good bit with a few more goals from crosses and even possibly a few more from corners but I decided to leave it which does have the benefit of making things more challenging.

Tactics

I made a few minor changes, going with one box to box midfielder and one central midfielder, upped the tempo and added back the through ball and it certainly helped us score a few more goals so I won’t be changing much going into next season.

Thank you Smoggy, it’s a bit different but I’m enjoying it. As soon as Rob mentioned the idea to me I went to do some brief tests and the numbers were promising although not earth shattering which got me interested. I’m certain there’ll be much better tactics than I’m using but I’ve started with this so I’ll just continue on with the same formation and just the odd tweak. The early signs are that the Brazil job should be a great help as every team we’ve faced so far seem to be less than great to say the least.

Season 5

Hello and welcome to the season five update of this career where I’m attempting the double trouble challenge with two forwards playing in the inside forward positions. We’ve made a start that suggests we have a decent chance of hitting the target and last year we got the Brazil job which in theory makes things so much easier. Anyway, this season was a bit of a mixed bag so let’s now see how it’s all unfolded.

Brazil

I’ll start with Brazil and the highlight game in all truth was this one against Paraguay where Vini got himself sent off, brilliant stuff!

7834F0C5-EF82-40C0-A4DD-742CE9D548FA.thumb.jpeg.e84c487a40eeb1243102c5fe5a3342a3.jpeg

I forgot to take the screenshot of the fixtures from before December but things went well with all wins apart from one draw I believe and the two boys had scored a few goals. The fixtures post new year went very well too as we won every game and things seemed very easy really and certainly a lot easier than I’ve found things to be in Europe. We’ll just have to see how we get on later when we no doubt meet some better sides.

The two scored a combined 30 goals for Brazil with Rod again being the main man. I’m just using the same system for Brazil as I am for club and their current players kind of suit the system but most are in their late twenties so we may face an issue when I need to start bringing the younger guys through. Just see how it goes though as if I get sacked then so be it.

Transfers

It was a very sad day for myself when I felt I needed to do the unthinkable and sell Ziyech. He’s a fine playmaker as he has all of the main attributes needed for the role in passing, movement, decisions and creativity and at really high levels but the one thing I like the most is that his shooting isn’t that great which I think stops him nicking too many goals. There doesn’t seem to be many like him on the game which has made him my go to peak aged (at the beginning) advanced playmaker this year. I replaced him with Paquetá who is very good, is also Brazilian so I know him well and I’m pretty sure he’ll do okay for us. He’ll rotate with Havertz but both have decent shooting at 14 so we’ll just have to hope the two don’t nick too many goals from our duo. Williams kicked off after we signed Paquetá as he didn’t like the fact we’d signed another winger which was slightly annoying as I’d no intention of playing him in that position. The developers like to put these little things into the game but surely if I could’ve told Williams what my plans were, we could’ve avoided the inevitable which was him then having to leave. He did leave and I decided just to take the stop gap route and bring in Lemar who should give us a few decent years. I also decided that now was the time to offload Fabinho who was heading into his advanced years so I straight swapped him for Tomori, who I believe I used on my ZZZ’s career and he was decent but he’ll very much be fourth choice here so we’ll see if he accepts that.

Team Results

The team results were very good with only the Champions League escaping us as Juve really exploited the weaknesses in our system in the final. I’ve included the quarter final where I thought we were going out as Mane and Salah destroyed us over two legs. The other cups were won fairly comfortably and the Champions Leaue final would’ve gone in our favour more times than not if we’d have played it 10 times I’m sure so we’re happy enough.

A decent season for injuries and these two have been pretty good in that regard so far, touch wood I guess.

Like Vini, Rod also got himself sent off in a game this season and I was very proud of him. I always keep the two up top if anyone gets sent off and it’s usually the attacking midfielder that gets hauled off or moved somewhere else on the pitch.

The highlight game for the duo apart from Rod’s sending off game was undoubtedly this.

It was a slightly frustrating season at club level for the duo in truth as they could only muster a combined 78 goals. I was really hoping they would’ve kicked on a bit by now and perhaps reached a 90 plus return but can’t be helped I suppose and we do have all of those international goals which are a great help at this stage. So, with those international goals, the two hit a combined 108 In total so we can only be happy with that.

It’s just their shooting that I’d like to see improve now and Vini’s in particular as he only has 14 so if that doesn’t improve and I fail this challenge, that’ll be my excuse!

Just caught up and you're doing well mate.

I rely so much on Aerial and crosses from wingers and corners etc, that I can't really conceive of a tactic like this where there's no one permanently in the middle. Just to illustrate my point: I've always avoided BBMs because they score too much, and I've finally solved that in my current career, so they assist a lot more than they score - but it relies on having central strikers!

Anyway, what I'm saying is that I think you're doing a great job given they are IFs and also much respect that you are holding to the philosophy and not training them in Aerial to get more from corners etc. Great stuff!

As for the ITN team, the first thing I always do is ship out the older guys and bring in a bunch of youngsters that I've been developing at my club. It usually works really well, but of course I got sacked last time I managed ITN... But anyway, swing those changes mate, get some fresh blood in...

Thanks Scratch, the main issue does seem to be getting everything right so the central players don’t take over. I’d usually try the work ball into box option to help with the long shots but that’s such a part of the IF’s game so you don’t want to use that. Just a conundrum in many ways and totally different way of thinking to normal but I’m enjoying it.

I did really get into the international on my Kean save and basically just went all Italian at club level which worked very well. This time I’m just winging it really and not planning anything so I’m almost certain I’ll come unstuck at some point.

Good going Ian, you’re doing great, I haven’t attempted a no striker tactic on this years, but can’t imagine it being easy by any stretch of the imagination. So well done on getting something to work 😁

Season 6

Hello and welcome to season six of this double trouble attempt with two beautiful Brazilians. This season turned out to be very frustrating in truth, so I’ll just dive right in.

Brazil

Things went okay for Brazil with the boys scoring a combined 19 goals. We won the Copa America at the beginning of the season with both players getting on the scoresheet and we’ve yet to taste defeat at international level but have suffered a few horrible draws. Yet again though, I forgot to take the screenshoot from December last year with those early season fixtures, sorry.

We tried to reduce the age of the squad a little with Milinkovic-Slavic leaving to be replaced by Olmo and Bernardeschi being replaced by Ikoné with both being a few years younger. Tomori hadn’t turned out to be the success I thought he would be so he was replaced by Todibo who will hopefully make for a decent fourth choice centre back. I was thinking of doing more business as we have a few other older players and Robbo and Tolisso were going into their final year of contract at the beginning of the season so I had a look in a bid to replace them. The thing was, I just couldn’t find anyone that good and decided in the end just to give them one last year because we’re financially sound as I’m hardly ever using the full budget so we could see some major changes next year. Robbo has already left at this point and Tolisso must just be on a rolling contract but pretty sure I’ll release him as soon as we move over into next season.

Team Results

Goals galore this year as we hit 156 in the league with 46 of them coming in the first seven games and at that point one of the two challenges had 15 goals so it was looking good. The goals dropped off though but we still ended up with our biggest league return yet and it might be my highest ever, I know I’ve had 150 odd previously but not sure it was as high as 156. Our Champions League campaign wasn’t so great as Bayern knocked us out at the quarter final stage but we got our revenge by beating them in the Club World Cup final at the end of the season. As you can also see below, we were successful in all of the other cups so a decent season in all.

After a terrific start, everything became a bit frustrating as the duo just fell off a cliff for awhile and it almost felt like the game wasn’t allowing them to score. The team goals dropped from how we started, yet there were still plenty going in but it just seemed like too many were going to other players and I was left incredibly annoyed. Anyway, they ended up with a combined 82 club goals this season, so 101 with the international goals included so we’re at least on the right track. I did make a slight tweak to the tactic before the season which I then forgot I’d made but it was very minor and I honestly don’t think it had any impact on this, guess we’ll see later as I’m reversing it for next season.

They should be arriving in their peak years now and it’s just Vini’s shooting that I don’t like as previously mentioned. I’ve even retrained them both to the central striker position and a different role to see if that helps, guessing it won’t but it won’t do any harm either.

That's a good season mate, though I feel you on the "game wasn’t allowing them to score" front. I've definitely been through that before too. Just gotta keep on keeping on.

23 hours ago, Ian said:

The thing was, I just couldn’t find anyone that good and decided in the end just to give them one last year

I often experienced that as well, so I often just buy up a bunch of youngsters each year, stick them in the reserves or loan them out, and see which ones are budding super monsters. Some don't work out, others are fantastic and generally end up taking over. But I have so much trouble trying to buy established players for many positions...

Anyway, you're doing great mate - keep on going!

That's a good season mate, though I feel you on the "game wasn’t allowing them to score" front. I've definitely been through that before too. Just gotta keep on keeping on.

Thanks Scratch, yeah it felt like the game decided that they’d scored too many earlier on in the season so it felt it needed to balance things out a little. Just how it felt, I’m not saying that’s what it does.

I’ve been trying to buy ready made especially now they’re arriving at their peak as I wanted the squad to be almost all peak too for those years but I can see it’s not going to go to plan as there’s hardly any options available I’ve noticed. I’ve had this on a few long saves this year so I should’ve learnt by now and if I do do another long save this year, I’ll definitely go younger earlier.

Motoring bud, this game can be frustrating sometimes but your doing really well.

Thank you Woody, it certainly can be.

Great going Ian, nearly half way, they will only go on from strength to strength I’m sure 👍

Thanks Dave, hopefully now they’re arriving at their peak years we’ll have some better returns.

I should be back later with the next update.

Season 7

Hello and welcome to the season seven update of this career where the target is to hit a combined 1,200 goals from two Brazilian inside forwards. We had a somewhat frustrating season six as the team scored a colossal amount of goals but our duo disappointed and just couldn't score enough of them. We were hoping for better this season so let’s see how it went.

Brazil

  • We drew a couple of games in the fixtures before December but the duo scored a good few goals with the games against Peru and Cape Verde being the better ones.
  • The second half of the year went well and we made the final of the World Cup where we’ll face off against Spain after we move over to next season.
  • Our first team is really strong but most of the key players are in their late 20’s to early 30’s so if we keep the job after the Spain game, things could get interesting over the next few years as I’ll be forced to play the youngsters.
  • The duo hit a combined 26 goals and it was Vini this time with the most as he hit 15 of them.

Transfers

Robertson and Tolisso had left at the end of last season and our second choice right midfielder Aaron’s kicked off over the Robertson departure so I had to either offer him a new deal or offload him. Having looked at him, I decided he wasn’t exactly fantastic so the second choice it was which left us needing a right, a left and a central midfielder. I went for Davies for the left who is usually great, Moriba for the central position who I’ve also used previously but doesn’t quite look so good on this save and then I went for a Brazilian regen for the right who does look like he’ll be great in a few years. Courtois finally left at the end of the season which has annoyed a few of the boys so we’ll need to dip into the market for a new goalie next year.

Team Results

We couldn’t repeat our goalscoring exploits of last year but were very dominant nonetheless as we won everything with our duo well amongst the goals in all of the finals.

We were really dominant this year with only one defeat.

Just the one injury this year and it was Vini who suffered it but it was just one of those in-game ones that ended up not being an injury post match.

This was the highlight game for the duo where they both scored a brace away in Turin against the mighty Zebres.

It was a much better season for the duo as they hit 101 goals between them with Hot Rod scoring a mighty 57 of them. They both started well and unlike in previous seasons, they seemed to maintain it with no real poor spells for either player. Hopefully this is the new norm and we can look forward to similar returns going forward but I’m not counting my chickens just yet. With the international goals we arrive at 127 goals for the season in total so a great return.

I don’t think either player is going to improve now but they are great and I’ll just have to accept Vini’s slightly poor shooting.
