Nice season Ian, to get 57 goals from a inside forward is great! Good going, good luck with next season 👍

Thank you Dave, it was great. I’ve been hoping to get +90 so to get +100 was great. We’ll see if we can maintain this for a few years as sooner or later I’m going to have to kind of rebuild the squad as a good few are in their late 20’s now. I may try to do it gradually over a few seasons.

Yeah, I'm still amazed with these totals for IFs! Hope you smash next season too. Halfway now too!!

Thanks Scratch, it’s been going well. In a lot of my tests with Mane and Salah they got these sort of returns but not many of the tests were over a full season so tricky to work out as often tiredness can creep in in the second half of the season I find. This season they both just started well and kept it going all season which has never happened before so we’ll see how next season goes I guess.

Season 8

Hello and welcome to the update for season eight of Ian’s Inside Forward’s Trouble Double. We had a brilliant season last time out which was comfortably our best yet, so we went into this season in great spirits hoping to continue on from where we left things off last time.

Let’s see how it went.

Brazil

  • We were straight into action after moving over to the new season as we had the World Cup final to play against Spain. We won it 2-0 with Rod grabbing both goals.
  • A few more friendlies were won before the turn of the year, including a 11-3 hammering of Chile.
  • There were a few more friendlies after new year and they we all also won which kept up our unbeaten international record, we’ll be beaten eventually I’m sure but this has been the easiest international run I’ve ever had.
  • It was Vini who scored the most for country this year with 14 and Rod contributed 9 to give the boys a total of 23 for the season.

Club

Back to club business now, starting with the transfers.

Transfers

We tried to lower the age of the squad a bit this year but I still wanted peak aged players so it was a case of offloading a few key players who were heading towards 30 and replacing them with 24-27 year olds. Playmaker Olmo was replaced by Riccardi at great expense and Paulinho was brought in to replace Lemar as a backup to our duo. I know all about him from managing Brazil and the fact he can also play both wide midfielder roles helped persuade me to go for him as he’ll make a great squad player. I spent a canny chunk of funds on Meret as I felt we needed an experienced keeper because I’m not sure our younger prospect is quite ready yet. Moriba hadn’t developed how I’d hoped so I offloaded him and brought in Traoré who looked ‘okay’. The Hungarian Szoboszlai was brought in to play on the left in rotation with Davies but he can also play centre midfield so he’s like a new version of Saúl, so great to have with this system. It was a sad day when Saúl left actually but I felt the time was right and the Brazilians Militão and Paquetá also both left at the end of the season, much to the dismay of a few squad members so they’ll need to be replaced before next season.

Team Results

The team had a great season with a high scoring league campaign and a clean sweep of trophies. All of the finals were pretty comfortable too so a nice season in all.

Fixtures

If we could’ve managed another goal in one of those 7-0’s we’d have completed the Gündogan challenge. It would’ve been with Havertz again though so wouldn’t have meant much but guess I could’ve asked to have an * next to my effort to indicate that I did it twice.

It was back to the frustrations of season six this year as the duo could only muster a combined 82 club goals. It was Rod who let us down as he had a very poor start to the season and just couldn’t catch up. The annoying thing for me is that like season six, we scored loads of goals but far too many went to other players. In the end, they both scored 41 goals each and we just have to be thankful for the 23 international goals to pull our tally up to 105 for the season.

I think they are fully developed now so it’s just a matter of trying to get the right squad and system behind them for their peak years I feel.

Final Thoughts

A touch frustrating this season was but it’s been a good few days since I played it and on reflection I suppose it wasn’t so bad as we are still on course for our target. I just feel like the tactic is close but not quite there, like one or two tweaks away and I have a few ideas but I think I’m done going into test saves now so I’ll just try a few things as I’m going and hope for the best. I’m more or less live now too as I’m only currently near the end of season nine so I’m happy as I much prefer it that way. If I get a disaster now, say one of them refusing to sign a new deal or a career ending injury then at least I won’t have long to wait to tell you as there’d be nothing worse than knowing we’ve failed in such horrible circumstances but then having to write up about three or four updates before getting to it.

Thank you for following and I’ll be back with the next update soon.

Another remarkable season Ian. Since they are still in their prime, this looks an easy wrap up.

Thank you Kane, if I can get them signed up for another five years soon which would take them into their early 30’s, I’d then be very confident as there’s always that chance they might want a new challenge or something.

Well done Ian, a great season in all the cups and still a good amount of goals from the boys, I’m confident that you’ll get this done 😁

Season 9

Good Evening all and welcome to the update for season nine of this double trouble inside forward career. We had a fantastic season seven where the two boys managed to break the 100 goal barrier but unfortunately season eight was a bit of a let down as the two suffered a drop off and could only score a combined 82 goals. It would’ve been fine had the boys suffered many injuries but they hadn’t so it was all very frustrating.

We were looking for an improvement this season so let’s see how it went.

Brazil

  • We won all of the games before a December with the 6-2 against Paraguay being the highlight game as Vini scored a hat trick and Rod managed a brace.
  • There was one draw against Costa Rica in the second half of the season but no defeats and we made the final of the Copa America with the semi proving to be a special game with both challengers scoring a hat trick in a 6-2 victory over Chile.
  • Vini managed 17 goals and Rod 13 for country so a very helpful amount to add to our tally.

Not much business for us this year even though we do have a few ageing players and ideally I’d like to replace a good few of them but there’s a distinct lack of quality peak aged players available at the moment on my save in truth. Schuurs was my replacement for centre back Militão who left at the end of the season and young regen Bueno was a replacement for Todibo as I felt I needed to bring in at least one younger defender. Luis came in to be a squad player for the midfield and Martí was the AP I chose to come in after Paquetá left and he’s just a young regen who looks like he’ll be great in a few years.

A slightly improved return of 94 goals this year and it was Vini who marched out in front, scoring 54 of them and Rod following up with 40. With their 30 Brazil goals added on we arrive at 124 which is second only to our season seven return. I said I was going to just try the odd tweak as I was going, well that’s what I did and after a poor start where I think they’d only hit about 30 odd goals at the winter break stage, I made one positional tweak that I think worked very well. The thing is, we’ll probably come back next year and it’ll not be as good as I thought so I’ll not go into any more detail at this stage. If it still seems promising next year, I’ll reveal it although it’s quite easy to work out what I’ve modified as no role has been changed, just a position and there aren’t many that can be changed without then having to also change the role if you look at the system from a page or so back.

I’ve still got them training as poachers which was mainly for Vini with the hope that it might help push his shooting up a bit but I’ve given up on that now as it’s clearly not going to increase now. I just want to get them both signed up on new long term deals now. I tried around February time and they wouldn’t even enter discussions which is slightly worrying although they do still have plenty of time on their current contracts so guess I’ll just have to keep trying.

Thank you for following and I’ll be back later with the next update.

Here’s a quick preview where you can see we were finally beaten at international level and it was the mighty Venezuela who humbled us in what would appear to be their first victory in years. They even had a man sent off too 😂

334 goals needed and the boys are 27. This is looking awesome.

Thank you Rob, that’s the way to look at it really and if I can get them to extend their contracts, I’d be very confident.

Another good season Ian, the boys are on track to doing this easily I believe, great going 👍

Thank you Richard, it’s going well and whilst don’t think we’ll be able to keep the Brazil job much longer, you could say we’ve already got enough goals there really and it’s probably just a matter of keeping them happy and getting them both to sign new deals which would take them into their 30’s.

The lads are playing really well and scoring tons. Not far to go now.

This INF thing has become the new strikerless i think.

Thanks Woody, I’m enjoying it and hopefully we can make it.

I suppose this is as close to going strikerless as you can get without doing so.

Thanks Kane, we just keep on going now.

Another great season mate, well on course here.

Cheers Smoggy, it’s getting closer. One thing I’m wondering is how well they’ll do when they start to age and decline as I’m not convinced there’ll be as many goals to be had from the IF position as in a central role at that stage. Hopefully we won’t need many goals though when we get there.

Just caught up with this @Ian, and all I can say is remarkable, I am more gob smacked how you keep the GA down with only 2 CD's, mad!

Really good numbers now, this is a walk in the park for you.

Thank you Ian, I’ve used a few similar systems with the two at the back and five in midfield and whilst I was shocked initially that it was possible to keep a reasonable defence I’m not now after a few months. There are a few things I’ve noticed in testing that helps and to be honest, I’d almost say it’s like attack being the best form of defence with this so it more than likely requires a top top team.

We have no central focal point in this system, yet we’re going with mixed passing as I found that that helped push more goals to the IF’s so a lot of those longer balls could just be wasted and we’d suffer turn overs. Well, none of that was happening with Liverpool in my first tests as we had Bobby in the AM position and he’s somewhat reasonable in the air. When I tried a test at PSG, I went with a more total playmaker type in there and the system failed with loads of goals conceded and shit results and it took me a while to work out what was wrong then it finally hit me that none of the players I was using in the AM position were anywhere near as complete as Bobby. It’s a running joke on here about how he’s underrated on this game, well for me he’s the best player on the game at the beginning for this system and challenge I’m doing in particular.

Of course, if I just had say Messi there who doesn’t have the Aerial or defensive game yet is utterly fantastic in other ways, then maybe his quality would mask the problems or more likely we’d just score loads and also concede loads which would be fine for this challenge but I always find when I’m conceding loads in a system then I eventually fail too much in terms of results so I always try to get any system I’m using somewhat reasonable in defence.

I wouldn’t think many would want to use a system like this in truth but I was thinking of doing a little post on the system after the next update going into more detail about what I look for in players and such to get the thing to work. I may still do that but it’s difficult to get it all down as I’ve just written a good bit now, more or less purely on one role. 😂

I reckon a few would benefit from it, but as you said a Top team would be probably benefit more, I have got York straight to the Championship using a Tactic I would consider good as 4 2 2 2, back to back promotions and winning each league, maybe I might give this a go if I get to the Prem??

You're a book of knowledge Ian, I really enjoy reading how you theorise the game and look for the fine details. Im a whore for statistics 😂 but I never really look across different saves for patterns, it's something I wish I did do and should really start now, as it seems to be the most effective way to make a good tactic, it also sounds very fun but time consuming.

I’m not sure I would give it a go tbh as I’m almost certain yours will be much better. This one was created purely to try and get to pushed up IF’s to score a good few goals.

Thank you Aaron, I have done a good bit of testing on this one and I mainly just focused on trying to get most of the shots to go to the two IF’s so they would hopefully score the bulk of our goals and then also try to get the system to score plenty of team goals to further pull their tally up. There’ll be much systems than mine here I know that but I did enjoy testing and creating it.

Season 10

Hello and welcome to season 10 of this double trouble attempt with two inside forwards. We’ve done okay so far and it was pleasing that the two managed a club return of 94 goals last year but their season seven return of 101 remains the benchmark so that’s what we’re aiming for.

Let’s see how they got on this year.

Brazil

We were straight into action as we moved over to the new season as we had to contest the final of the Copa America against Uruguay. We won and fairly comfortably even though we suffered a scare in going behind early on. I mentioned last time out that we lost to Venezuela which was a bit embarrassing really as it looks like it might be their first result in years. Argentina also got the better of us in the first half of the season and we drew a game in the second half too but things aren’t so bad as we’re still top of our World Cup qualifying group and looking certain to qualify. They both scored 10 goals each this year so a nice 20 to add to their end of season tally. I’m not sure how long we’ll be able to keep going internationally as the squad is ageing and some of the younger players don’t look all that great but I almost feel like we’ve got the goals we wanted so the dreaded sack will almost be celebrated should it finally occur.

I mentioned last time out that I wanted to get them both tied down to long term deals so that was the first thing I tried after moving over to the new season and they both accepted our terms and signed. Things are looking good now as we should have a full five seasons including this one to get the remaining goals.

The two had a good year in terms of injuries with just an in-game one for Vini which turned out not to be one post match and a month long one for Rod that occurred towards the end of the CWC so shouldn’t cause him to miss many games at all.

It was 59 goals for Rod this year and 44 for Vini to give them a club total of 103 which is our best club return yet so we can only be happy with that even though the extra Club World Cup games most certainly helped. The two now have 989 goals in total, so 211 left with hopefully four seasons to get them in which seems very doable but we can’t celebrate yet. I mentioned a slight tweak to the system on the last update and it does seem like something that’s working okay so I’ll do a separate post on that and the tactic later as I feel now is the right time while my first choice team are all still real players. I’d do it now but it’d just make this post far too big plus it’ll take me a day or two to write it up I’d say.

Going great mate, you definitely won't need 4 seasons!

I made one positional tweak that I think worked very well. The thing is, we’ll probably come back next year and it’ll not be as good as I thought so I’ll not go into any more detail at this stage.

I really feel you on this part, I keep making changes that look good for a bit and then turn out to be average! Sounds like your latest change might be a winner?

I also feel you on the peak players thing. Players around 27 to 30 perform better than younger players (and call me thick, but I'm only just now realising how much), but the game sucks at developing the next wave. I generally make my own by developing youngsters from birth because they turn out a lot better, but ... then you need to play them when they aren't peak age or they get unhappy. Catch 22.

One thing against peak age players is the dreaded recovery time from injury. I just had to sell 27 year old Lemar, who had a couple of average injuries in a row (not big ones) and had only a few greens left (top of 17) compared lots of green and a couple of 19/20s a year before. It's quite hard to balance a squad. Mind you, that's probably not a bad thing...

Hmm, I probably shouldn't have mentioned that with the lads in 28 yo range! :P  Nah, they will be fine, peak players still perform really well even if their attributes dip a bit...

Anyway, really impressed with this, go bring it home in 2 seasons!

Thank you Scratch, hopefully another two or three seasons and they’ll hit their target. I did want to get them to the target with just club goals, we’ll just have to see on that one although it does look doable but if I can get them to sign another extension.

I made the little change half way through season nine and the second half of that season was great and this seemed good too but it could all just be their age. I am going to put the tactic up before the season 11 update but I don’t think I’m going to go into too much detail on it as I don’t think many would want to use such a tactic and I know I’m going to struggle getting everything down if I try to detail everything. I mentioned that little bit about the AM yesterday and there’s stuff like that for nearly every position plus when I think of one thing, another thing comes up and it’s giving me a headache basically. To be honest, even writing these updates out is quite challenging for me and although I have improved as I’ve been on here, it’s a struggle at times.

Yeah, I noticed it when I first got this years game. I think it’s probably always been similar but this year it feels more pronounced and if I go with too many youngsters I seem to pay the price.

Yes, that is something I’ve noticed a few times with players. Rod has just had that month long one at the end of the season but luckily it hasn’t really hit any of his attributes.
