Career Ian’s Inside Forward’s Trouble Double (Season 14)

Recommended Posts

Tactic

This is the tactic I’m currently going with and have been since the midway point of season nine. The only changes from what I posted a few seasons back is the position of box to box midfielder and central midfielder have been swapped around and the attacking midfielder has been moved from the centre to off left centre position. The instructions and everything else remain the same and you can see that apart from the goalie, they are all real life players which is why I felt that this was the best time for this post.

Players

Here are the players and you can see that although a few of them are getting on a bit, they’re still quality.

Idea

The idea of the tactic was to get the ball to the two inside forwards very quickly so they can get their shots off. I didn’t want us to dilly dally about with the ball in the final third because I felt that that would increase the shots from the deeper players. I went for through balls in the final third in a bid to utilise the boys pace and movement and it seems to work okay the most part. You see a lot of goals whereby a central midfielder will pick up the ball in the final third, play a through ball between the centre backs and one of the inside forwards will make a run from the side of the box to around the penalty area and score. With Mane and Salah in testing, nearly every goal seemed to be scored like that. I have noticed that this method isn’t as affective against teams that play three at the back which makes sense as the central defender in the three is just in the perfect position to intercept the through ball. I’d actually say, the tactic in general for the inside forwards anyway, is nowhere near as good against teams playing three at the back and I think that that’s partly the reason we’ve found international fairly easy as I’ve noticed most of the teams we face in this area of the world play a flat 4-4-2 which this system seems to work incredibly well against. You could switch things up and perhaps lose the through ball against the three at the back teams but I’ve never bothered on this save and another thing I’ve thought about is to maybe try early crosses to again try and utilise their pace and movement by getting it in there early before the defence is set. I did try it in some of my test saves and it didn’t really make any difference with the players I’d used so I’ve just left it off here but if these two had had great aerial, I’d almost certainly have given it a try.

Changes

The reason the changes came about was that I felt like the inside forward on the same side to the box to box midfielder was scoring the most goals, it wasn’t easy to work out in truth as I often rotated them from side to side but I did feel that that was the case. I thought it was probably due to the inside forward on that side getting more support which funnily enough was the opposite of what I thought would happen as I’d expected the box to box guy to get in the way and maybe hinder him but shows what I know. I’d tried the double box to box midfielders thing earlier and didn’t like it because it seemed to increase all of the shots from the other midfielders and I’d also tried double central midfielders which made everything too limp. I was happy with the central midfielder and box to box midfielder in there with the advanced playmaker but just wanted to get more support to the inside forward on the central midfielders side. I suddenly thought that if I moved the attacking midfielder slightly to the left, he’d maybe offer that support without it hindering the team and I think it works although it is difficult to work out as the two are now right in their peak years so could be very overpowered.

Anyway, that’s the tactic and I’m not going to go into any more detail as I’ll be on all night. I mentioned the thing about what I think the attacking midfielder needs to help this work in the comments further up and there are a few other things but ultimately it’s mainly just pure quality that is needed as you can see from the players used. I can’t see many wanting to use this system anyway so this is almost intended as a reference for myself.

Thank you for reading and I’ll be back with the season 11 update tomorrow.

Great of you to explain what went in to your thinking whilst creating and adjusting your tactic Ian, it’s nice to see how different a tactic can be and still be very successful, obviously the tactic I’m using at the moment with 3 up top is totally different. So very interesting seeing how you found success with no strikers.

Ageing squad now, have you got replacements lined up? I just sold Trent as he was 31, I don’t like using older players now idea why. But seems like you’re getting to the point now where regents will have to come in.

Thank you Richard, I agree, there are loads of different ways to go about things. When it comes to purely results this year, looking at the tactics in the tactics thread you’d almost think you need to go either 4/5/1 or 4/4/2 or similar variants to get success. Of course, those are probably the best for results but you can get other things up work and work very well indeed for certain challenges on here.

We are ageing so I’ll have to look at that but we do have one or two youngsters coming through that are currently squad players. I’m only keeping a few going a bit longer because I noticed I’ve sold off a few at say 29-30 and after two or three years they’re still decent at 32-33. We’ll see how it goes I guess but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this career so far I have to say.

Another great season my friend and you are soo close now and will probably be done in 2 seasons(i guess).

It does seem that the crazy tactics are back this year. I've struggled with the "normal" looking ones but there is something quite perfect by a strange one! 🤣

Well done mate. 👍

Thank you Woody, hopefully we can get to the total without any real problems.

I think the one thing that’s good about going with top teams and players is that you can go the unusual route with tactics and have a chance of getting them to work. It’s still a challenge though as this hasn’t been a total cakewalk and there was a time a few seasons back where I didn’t think we’d get the club returns above 90 so to be sat here now with a couple of ton plus returns is very rewarding as I have done a lot of testing and stuff getting this system right.

Season 11

Things are looking good at the moment, we’re getting close to the target and the two boys are still right in the middle of their peak years so it’s just a matter of playing on now and hopefully reaping the rewards at the end.

Club

I’ll start with the club business.

Transfers

We’re into regen territory now with our transfer business so not much to say on it. You’ve seen from my tactic post yesterday that we are still rocking with predominantly real players which is something that can’t go on forever as they’re all getting on a bit so we’re trying to address that and hopefully we can manage it in a way that doesn’t impact our results too much.

Team Results

A clean sweep of trophies this year and a nice league goal haul of 132 which seems pretty good for this system. I mentioned the ageing players earlier but we do have some younger boys, so a decent blend in truth and although those established players are coming to the end of their careers, they’re still great and they certainly know their way around a football pitch that’s for sure.

Fixtures

We didn’t start out too grand as we were conceding a lot of goals and had a few late game collapses but we seemed to weather that and in the end only lost twice I believe, once to Barca and once to Arsenal in one of the legs in one of the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

Brazil

International is strange now as I’m trying to use some of the younger players and the fact they all have about five or six names makes things tricky as I’m constantly getting them mixed up. It doesn’t help that Brazil seem to often have loads of players that can play in any position in the final third which also contributes to the whole mixing up thing.

Anyway, we lost out to Uruguay and Ivory Coast in the first half of the season so you could say things weren’t looking so great but I was beginning to get a bit more confidence as I was getting used to the younger players.

We had two disastrous friendly matches in the first international break of the second half of the season after I had messed up my selection. When I say messed up, I mean that when it came to selecting the squad, I was just keen to continue on with our club season so without even looking at the squad, I just submitted it straight away. I got to the first games and realised we had a few injuries and that was that. I mentioned the other day about how I felt that the attacking midfielder in this system needed to have reasonable aerial and this was a prime example as I was forced to go with a young playmaker type in there who didn’t have the required aerial and paid the price big style. It wasn’t just that as there were other injuries but it was a big shame for the two inside forwards ultimately as those were two good games to pick up goals in. I wasn’t sure how the Worid Cup would go in truth but it’s went okay so far as we’ve made the semi final without any real problems and we’ll see how the semi goes in the next update. In terms of goals, it was Vini with eight and Rod with 10.

Vini managed 57 goals and Rod 43 to give them a combined 100 for club this season. With their 18 international goals we arrive at 118 for the season and 1,107 in total. So with just 93 goals left, we are really closing in on it now but I still want to get the total at club level if possible so even if we hit the target next season I’ll be carrying on.

Thank you all for the comments, much appreciated.

It seems my quest to get to the total next season is going to be blighted by injury.

On the plus side though, in early January, I got them both to sign new five year deals which gives me hope that we could maybe hit the total with just club goals.

Season 12

Hello and welcome to the season 12 update of Ian’s Inside Forward’s Trouble Double where our dynamic duo only needed 93 goals to reach our target.

My plan was to get straight to business and show you how the two challengers got on but I feel I must first do the international bit with Brazil as the season started with us having a semi final to play in the World Cup.

Brazil

The FA expected us to reach the semi final of the World Cup, which we’d done so there wasn’t much risk of the dreaded sack but we still wanted to win the thing if at all possible. It was France who we’d face in the semi final and Vini produced the goods in scoring a hat trick to set up a final against Uruguay. It turned out to be a fairly one sided game and this time in was Rod who was the main man as he netted a brace in a 3-1 victory.

We needed just 93 goals this season to hit our target which seemed very doable but unfortunately the challengers suffered a few annoying injuries to put us right up against it.

Vini hit the all important 1,200th goal in this games towards the end of the club season.

Vini scored 46 club goals, Rod hit 44 and they both managed 7 for Brazil. So 104 for the season which given the injuries, must surely be our best season yet. The target has been reached but as I’ve said all along, I’d like to hit the target with club goals only so we still need 176 if we’re to manage that. They’re both tied down for hopefully another five years so we’ll continue on.

Final Thoughts

I’m thrilled that we’ve reached the target and it’s been a really nice little journey, just need to hit the 1,200 goal total at club level now and I’d be very thrilled so that’s the new goal. I’ll keep the Brazil job until I’m either done with the save or more likely, I suffer the dreaded sack as I may as well keep it for as long as possible because it helps me control their game time.

Thank you for following and I’ll be back with the next update soon.

Yayyyy, and there one of the best careers this season! Brilliant done Ian: you accepted my challenge and destroyed it! A DT with two IFs is nuts. You’ll get your stretch target too, no doubt! Well done!

Thank you Rob and thank you for setting the challenge. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and I’d say it’s definitely my biggest achievement on the game when it comes to long careers. Hopefully we can hit the club target too and I am interested in seeing what kind of returns they can get from the IF position once they totally decline as I’m not confident there’ll be much there.

Thank you Richard, it’s been a great journey and if they can just hang on that little bit longer to get the rest of the club goals, I’d be thrilled.

Thank you Woody, I’ve really enjoyed it and I’m glad Rob came up with the idea when he did as I’m not sure what I’d have done otherwise.

Just caught up and massive congrats on the DT - like the others have said, that's a great job especially given their positions!

Thanks also for the thought provoking tactics explanation. So interesting to see the effect small tweaks can have.

Further to our previous discussions on peak players being a lot better than youngsters, I've recently been reminded of that thing where a player averages 7.7 in his first season, 7.4 in his second and by the time you get to their 4th season they are averaging 6.7 even though they still have killer attributes. Currently happening with me for Bernardo Silva, just reaching 30. Have you noticed this too? Have any of your ageing bunch had the same problem? How do you freshen those players up?

And also, I just had to laugh at this:

"International is strange now as I’m trying to use some of the younger players and the fact they all have about five or six names makes things tricky as I’m constantly getting them mixed up".

LoL, I stop buying Brazilians after a couple at club level for that reason, ITN must be a nightmare.

Anyway, great work, love what you've done with this career and with the write up.

Thank you Scratch,

I’ve had it before where a tactic has totally improved with just one tweak so that was always on my mind with this one. I just had my test saves and I’d look at things that were happening on here and if I got an idea to try something, I’d try it on the test saves and if it worked okay I’d go for it on here. It was Mane and Salah at Liverpool that was my main test save and I found that whilst most things worked well with them, there was things I tried that didn’t so I knew not to try them here. Moving the attacking midfielder to the left was the only thing I’ve done here without first testing and I’ve never even tried it on the test saves since, I feel it’s better and I’ve never felt the need to change anything since but it might just be that the two were going into their best years at that time.

I usually look to replace players when they hit 30 but I haven’t been able to achieve that here mainly because I’ve never found younger options suitable.

This is Bantancur now and he’s been first choice CM for years but he won’t be next year. His rating has been dropping over the years but with no affect on team results and these have been the best years for the duo so maybe something in that. Although, I did move the AM to right in front of him a few years back which might’ve lowered his output.

I’ve got Tonali who is still great but it’s in my mind that he could also drop at any time.

I have got a few decent looking youngsters coming through and I’ve noticed this guy who if I can sign him will be my replacement for Bentancur.

Brazil is just an accident waiting to happen really. I’ve got Guimarães as my first choice CM and you can see he’s going to plummet soon but there’s just not the options coming through.

I remember on the FM years ago, how you could give players nicknames and that would maybe be something they could add on to this game which would certainly help with the Brazil names thing. I’m thinking there must be some legal reason why they can’t though as I think they even took that feature out of the full game although I’m not totally sure on that.

I haven’t even started the next season so I better get on with it shortly.

I haven't used separate saves to test for a couple of years now, I just test on the fly. I just found it too hard get a team that was close to my existing one, so I couldn't really trust the test results - there were too many variables... But testing on the fly isn't any better, because although you have the real team, you can't do things like play the same game (too reduce variables) many times with different variations. In the end I opted for testing on the fly because it makes the most use of my playing time (ie I'm not playing dead games that don't count towards a career). Of course there are no rights and wrongs with this - I just find it interesting to see people's apporaches!

I'm at this spot right now, but because my 30 yo's aren't doing that well anymore, I'm ditching them and going to play my youngsters and let them develop. I take you're point about the ratings not mattering so much if the team performances aren't affected, but in my case we just feel more fragile (still winning most games by a lot but coming close to losing more often).

As for Brazil, yeah, that's gonna be hard. That's why I always sign up a lot of ITN youngsters and develop then as much as I can, because the other players just aren't quite there... Good luck with it.

There is already a nickname field which is shown instead of firstname + secondname (if a player has one). Eg Neymar is shown instead of Neymar da Silva Santos Junior. Even if they can't let us edit it for real players, they could surely set some nicknames for these new Brazilian players. They just don't bother to do that. I really hope they do something about it.

I just had no idea how this would go so just kept my original test saves from before I started and would every so often try things on those. I think I was three seasons in before I started posting as the community challenge was still ongoing so I didn’t want to start until that was finished so I did a lot of testing then. I’m not even sure if the end tactic is any better than the starting one in truth though as the team changed and the two players gradually improved too so difficult to work out as you say.

Yeah, I definitely think 30 is the best time to get rid as usually they’re still valued fairly highly then too. I’ve kept a few going too long here really but this next season I’ve brought a few more youngsters in and a few more oldies will be leaving at the end of the season so we aren’t far away now from getting the squad in good shape, as long as the new players are good enough that is.

I wasn’t really sure how to go about the Brazil job but in the end I just went for it the easygoing way. I can see first hand now, how players don’t develop well under the a.i. as some of these peak aged regens just aren’t good enough up be playing for Brazil in truth.

I’m wondering if SI just keep the Brazilian names like this out of spite because of the legal problems they’ve had with Brazil over the years.

Next season will be up in a minute.

Season 13

We reached the challenge total last season and now we are gunning for the total with just club goals of which we need another 176 to get us over the line. We should with any luck have another five seasons in which to get them which seems very doable but I do feel I’m going into their later years a bit blind, as I have no idea what’ll happen to the two inside forwards when they decline. I feel my system is heavily based around their pace, shooting and movement so once those drop, I’m not overly confident but guess we’ll just have to cross that bridge when or if we come to it.

I’ll start with the international results.

Brazil

I was given my marching orders after suffering defeat to Argentina in the quarter final of the Copa America. We weren’t exactly disgraced and after the game I thought we’d got away with it, yes the board were disappointed with the result but they hadn’t included this competition in their expectations so a day or so later when they wielded the dreaded axe, I was a bit shocked and deeply upset.

It had been coming in truth as we’d suffered a few poor results throughout the last two seasons. The squad just wasn’t right for my tactic and I certainly wasn’t going to change it at this stage. I’ve included a shot of the team report in terms of star ratings which I know aren’t overly reliable but as a guide you can see we weren’t that great really, especially in defence which was always going to make things difficult as my system kind of requires decent defenders. We’ve had a decent run though in winning two World Cups and two Copa Americas and now we can focus purely on our club goals. The two managed 19 goals between them this year and 206 in total over the years so not bad really.

The two made a great start to the season with this game being their best ever as they scored a combined seven goals.

They ended the season with a combined 80 club goals to bring that total up to 1,104. I was slightly disappointed in the end as they had scored 46 at the winter break stage and faded a bit in the second half of the season which could be a sign of decline. We just need them to hold off for a couple of years and we’ll be home so not much more to say really.

Final Thoughts

I suffered the dreaded sack from Brazil, the boys had a decent season and although they look like they’re declining, we only need 96 more club goals, so we play on.

Thank you all for following along.

Congrats on the DT mate, fantastic effort and a great insight into your tactics and thinking behind it.

Thank you Smoggy.

I finished season 14 last night so that update will be up later on today.

Great job mate! You should be able to bring the club 1.2K home easy enough. The question then will be do you go after the extra 94 goals (beyond that) you'll need for 1.5K in total?

BTW commiserations on the Brazil sacking... Happened to me in my DT (with Italy) and I gotta say it was a shock getting sacked, even though it was sort of enjoyable to not have to do the ITN job anymore.

Anyway, full steam ahead, looking forward to season 14 - did you manage to sneak home or will it take another season?

Thank you Scratch, I’d never thought about the 1.5k before so that’s something I’ll have to think about but I’ll not mention anymore on it before posting the next update as we’ll know more after that.

I did enjoy this international run as the original team seemed to really suit the system. At the beginning those extra few goals looked like they’d be important which made things easier during those 70-80 odd club return years.

We’ll find out how season 14 went in a minute.

Season 14

Hello and welcome to season 14 of this double trouble attempt with inside forwards. We need 96 goals to reach our club target so without delay, I’ll kick on with the update to see how many the duo managed this season.

Club Business

  • We were knocked out of the Champions League at the first knockout round stage by Bayern.
  • We did win every other trophy but we weren’t so great defensively as there were a few rather wild games.
  • A few transfers were made to lower the age of the squad and a few including Tonali left at the end of the season.

The challengers managed a combined 78 goals this season to bring their club tally up to 1,182, which puts us just a whisker away from our 1,200 club target. The two are declining now and the experience I have on this year's game tells me that there’ll probably be a big drop in their attributes over the next couple of seasons but with just 18 goals remaining we shouldn’t have to worry too much.

Final Thoughts

Another decent season and you’d think the club target that I crave will be reached next season and if so, it’s just a question of how much further I want to go. I could try and hit a challenge total of 1,500 goals but I can’t think too much about that until my club target has been hit. Even if we hit the target in reasonable time next season, I’ll still play on for the full season and then make a decision then.

Thank you all for following along.

Good going Ian, nearly there now, another season and you should be there. I know the feeling on whether to go for more, try and get that 1,500 I think 😁
