What is the best thing to do in this situation? Should I sell him even though he's an important player?

Really up to you if you sell or not. I find that having a few unhappy players can effect results so I usually see if I can get a suitable replacement and then sell the unhappy player.

If he is a player that’s important to you then you might be able to ride out his unhappiness and get him to sign a new contract at some point.

I was given a tip for this on here which does work more often than not. Just cross off the transfer offer and go back to your squad screen, offer the player a new contract and of they accept then the transfer offer will automatically be rejected.

You can accept the bid and then when you go to confirm the transfer, just say no, and they don’t get unhappy.
