Career Score One Take One 2021 - Final Round Up

Recommended Posts

Season 1 - October

October was a relentless month of games with 8 matches to play in total so I have decided to put the last game of the month into the November update just to make it a little less of a slog.

Crewe Alexandria - Home - League 1

Our league form is excellent at the moment and we carried that on with a good win over Crewe. Will Grigg had earned a start after his brace in the Pizza Plate and he rewarded me with a goal and Tom Hopper carried on his good form after I nabbed him from Lincoln. I wasn’t too worried about conceding 2 as at least it limits the number of players I need to fit into my squad.

No surprises that it’s the two Crewe goalscorers who join up with us. Crewe are supposed to have lots of promising young players but I ended up with two 32 year olds with Steve Davies being a past his best TM and Ronan Finn being an ok AP.

Shrewsbury Town - Away - Papa Johns Trophy

Usually the Pizza Plate matches barely get 3 figure crowds but with free scoring Oxford in Town the Shrews had shifted 5500 tickets fo this game. They were rewarded by seeing there side humbled by a 2nd string side and I managed to collect another 3 players to my bulging squad.

The Shrews GK is on loan from Wolves and he probably didn’t expect to suddenly find himself playing for Oxford because he conceded 3 goals in a Pizza Plate game. I also took Ro-Shaun Williams which is a very good steal as he is a good CB and then Brad Walker who is an underwhelming CM who probably won’t stay around long.

Gillingham - Away - League 1

These big wins are a nightmare for squad management and I’m getting close to the 40 player first team limit now after winning this match by 5 clear goals. Hopper had to be involved in the goals again and then Winnall staked a claim for a first team spot with 2 off the bench.

The best player taken was probably Jack Turner who is only 20 and looks a decent CB but the rest are very unforgettable as players. One name does stick out in the list though and that is former Yellow and hero of our promotion team back in 2015 Alex McDonald.

Peterborough - Away - League 1

The next game was a clash with perennial League 1 promotion favourites Peterborough. We have been on a good run but this was an evenly contested game between two good teams. We needed a Winnall equaliser 11 minutes from time to salvage a point and continue our unbeaten record.

AB5448BC-B1DC-4431-9577-8A5235D10CF9.thumb.png.cff8205162a86d9f0787a9eb54c76e06.png

So with the draw it was a straight swap between our best performers on the day and in Posh’s case based on AvR over the season. Neither club did badly as we both sent IF’s to each other and although I perhaps shaded the deal they are pretty similar players.

MK Dons - Home - League 1

The games just kept on coming as did the goals as we smashed in another 4 goal haul. We are clearly better than a lot of teams in this league but as the Posh game proved not all teams.

B1D21451-66C3-4E32-89AA-F464769963EF.thumb.png.8fb32f35c54f762cadea39cfcc058838.png3E535C49-893D-4346-9BC8-16C24CB22EBE.thumb.png.f7469ba450338f1015b7c97f06d1b30e.png

Two of the players we took look ok with 22 year old GK Andrew Fisher looking like he might develop and be useful and 32 year old Kieran Lee looking a good midfield option. We also took former Southampton player Andrew Surman who is well past his best and young striker Stephen Walker who might develop but more likely will never get a game with the sheer number of players I have and eventually be released.

Swindon - Home - League 1

This is the big one, the glamorously named A420 Derby against Swinedon Town!

It was a bright start to this match with all the scoring happening by the 34th minute. I then gradually started to shut up shop as I didn’t want very many players to come from that lot into my squad. The plan worked and we only had to take two.

B931CA77-9A18-43C5-861C-1B0AB492A608.thumb.png.0897623dbd22efc1f340417aef04ffa2.pngB4517ABC-668D-44C4-B321-D9AF33A51480.thumb.png.abcf9f87560157254bc67b167185c9df.png

I didn’t want any of there players in all honesty but I also wanted to win so I had to take the rough with the smooth. I have no time for either player and I don’t need “agents” in the squad causing problems so I dumped both players in the reserves straight away never to be seen again.

Charlton - Away - League 1

We finally reach the final game of the update if not the month with an away trip to Charlton and our first loss. The Addiks are newly relegated from the Championship and will be looking to go back up but I was disappointed after Winnall equalised that we didn’t get at least a point out of the game.

With Winnall getting the goal he was on his way to Charlton which was disappointing as he is a decent TM and has scored a few goals so far. We have a few decent strikers though so no need to panic just yet.

If you have managed to get to the end of all that and have any idea what is going on then you deserve a medal and I thank you for reading.

I read it all as well and really enjoyed Foxy! Some great results in there! Dembele looks decent.

Look forward to the next update 😁

Enjoyable reading as ever.

I honestly would forget something every game.

Random question, do you pick the team or let the game (assistant manager) pick the team for each match?

Lovely write-up. You can always tell you enjoy this. I would like my medal too, so just pop it in the post with my Badges.

It’s good fun so I’m glad it comes across in the write up. Your medal should be with you tomorrow.

Dembele certainly looks good so I hope he can hang around awhile.

I pick the team every game which gets harder all the time as there are so many names in the squad now and I forget who is who!

A very nice unbeaten run until the unfortunate Charlton defeat at the end.

Things are moving along nicely.

Hopefully Charlton was just a blip.

Season 1 - November

November was another bumper month of games with league, cup and Pizza Plate action. With the good start I have made I don’t need to worry about the size of the squad although they aren’t all great quality.

Fleetwood - Away - League 1

We had lost our previous game and there was more dropped points here against the Cod Army although goal machine Tom Hopper did salvage a draw for us which was well deserved.

86EAC398-B067-4626-B999-A46953620B9C.thumb.png.eac1f160aedee83065dff6665514f6ac.pngD4B48534-28F1-47C0-B22A-201AB913F963.thumb.png.0d57c5deeadc21733012d08bf149a026.png

I was pleased with the draw but any sense of enjoyment was soon gone when I realised it would be a straight swap between our best players on the day and based on AvR that would be Tom Hopper!

I took him from Lincoln on the 2nd game of the season and wasn’t pleased at the time when Matty Taylor went the other way but I have come to love Tenacious Tom after he hit 8 goals in 8 games.

I need to take a moment to compose myself as sending him to Fleetwood was a soul destroying experience 😢

I took Callum Camps from Fleetwood and he is a pretty good creative midfielder but he is no Tom “The son I never had” Hopper.

Rochdale - Home - League 1

The show had to go on though and a new hero was bound to emerge.

Camps made a goalscoring debut which was nice as was William Grigg coming in for Hopper and scoring and the brace from his strike partner Agyei as well. This also brought us back to winning ways.

We got ourselves three players here and none of them are outstanding and I doubt  Morley or Kaja will be in the first team squad for long. Beesley could be a decent back up TM and who knows maybe he will be the new Tom Hopper.

Shrewsbury - Home - FA Cup

We smashed Shrewsbury 4-0 in the Pizza Plate a few games ago and we went and took another 2 players off them in the FA Cup as well. Will Grigg got his 2nd and 3rd goals in 2 games and he is beginning to fill the hole in heart left behind by Tom Hopper. It was nice to dominate the game with only 10 men as well and perhaps it was the sending off and the toning down of my tactic that kept the score respectable and meant I didn’t take too more crap Salop players.

Another CB was ok to take in this game but he isn’t going to be any more than a back up and the midfielder the less said the better.

Gillingham - Home - Pizza Plate

The Gills are another team we have played and taken players from this season and they lost another one here as we continued on our road to Pizza Plate perfection with a 1-0 win.

We added a midfielder to the squad in Jacob Millis although with the numbers racking up he went to the reserves and will be out the door soon enough.

Doncaster - Home - League 1

Next up was a right old Donny ding dong as we continued our fine form. I think it’s safe to say that Tom Anderson wanted to make sure he didn’t get transferred to us as he first scored an OG and then just to make sure he got sent off as well. Jake Beesley made himself useful in this game as he scored early on and it was plain sailing all the way from then on.

All three players were pretty good steals in this game as we added striker/widemen and a midfielder to the ranks although I have no idea we’re I will fit them in!

Wigan - Away - League 1

Will Grigg might have regretted his decision to leave Wigan for Sunderland a few years ago but he didn’t show it here as he made sure we won the game and didn’t lose a player. Unless his plan was to score get a good rating and then hope we draw or lose so he could go back to the Latics.

If that was his plan it didn’t work and we would be taking a player. It turned out we would get Joe Garner who is 32 so not a long term option at the club but he is still pretty good as a TM and certainly better than we have in that role.

Portsmouth - Away - League 1

Will Grigg is starting to make his mark on this save now with a brace against a team who should be (but aren’t) challenging near the top of the table.

I was hoping to get Harrison as he was good in my Redknapping Challenge attempt but unfortunately that wasn’t to be. Actually I did well though as full backs can be hard to get in these challenges as it’s the players in central roles that often get the better ratings so I was happy to take Callum Johnson who is a RB and looks good.

Stevenage - Home - FA Cup

This was the perfect tie to get us into the 3rd round and potentially in with a chance of taking a good player off of a Championship or PL team but on the other hand if we win well I could end up with a load of old tat that is going straight out the door.

We were 2 up in 10 minutes and I had seen enough and shut up shop from that point on. I was happy when Stevenage got one back and then we kept them at arms length to just take one player off of them and book our place in the cup third round.

It wasn’t actually the Stevenage goalscorer that we took but instead Tyrone Marsh who played wide in this game but actually looks a decent lower league striker who may feature at some point in the future.

We didn’t get the plum tie in the 3rd round but we certainly got a winnable game as we will take on Exeter in January.

We started this update with the sad news that Tom Hopper was leaving but we end with a new love as William Donald Grigg was the star man this month and even got the player of the month award.

Unfortunately in these kinds of save I had better not get too attached as he could be gone at any moment but that is easier said than done because I am a lover not a fighter.

Finally the league table shows we are well in the promotion picture and even after 14 games we look good for at least a playoff place.

December is another month packed with games so I think I will do that in a two parts and then show you my current squad and the comings and goings as well to try and make sense of everything that has been going on so far.

Thanks for reading.

Nice update that Fox!

Gutted to see you lose your son, but he was getting fed up of you embarrassing him in front of the boys!

Doing well, some decent players in and doing well!

Been meaning to catch up since I saw you posted this, following you in this type of challenge is always worth the investment!

Not going to lie I have no idea on half the players and who's even in your squad now 😂. Still enjoying the journey regardless!

Good job I have made William Donald Grigg part of the family now then.

Honestly I look at my squad and I have no idea who half of them are or where they came from and it takes ages to pick a team. The nice thing with this save though is the little surprises like Tom Hopper who come out of nowhere banging in some goals and then are gone again.

I bet it's a right pain! When I start a save with someone I'm unfamiliar with I also pick my starting XI then try not to deviate too much from it, until I've got my head around who I have available at least, it typically takes me a good few weeks or months to "understand" my squad, too have it constantly changing sounds like my nightmare haha. Keeping track of strikers during Squad Numbers was enough of a pain 😂

I try to keep a preferred XI in mind and then fit in players around that based on fitness or suspension. Then players I steal can go into my preferred XI if they are good or they become part of my rotation.

For the most part I know which players I have that are decent and the players where I think “who are they” tend to be the rubbish ones. It’s not fool proof though and I have suddenly come across decent players that I had forgotten about but that’s quite fun.

Loving this so far, lets hope for a decent draw in the cup next time out for a potential to grab a prem/championship player!

I hope so as it would be great to have a really good Prem player slumming it in League 1.

Season 1 - December

This isn’t actually the whole of December and instead I have decided to post my results up to Christmas and then do a Christmas/New Year post tomorrow which will also cover all the comings and goings so far.

Ipswich - Home - League 1

This was a 2nd v 3rd clash with the Tractor Boys 2pts behind such in the table. The game seemed to be heading towards what if I remember correctly would have been a first 0-0 but then Daniel Agyei had other ideas and gave us the lead. We rounded of the game in injury time when Sean Clare scored and we further commented our place in the top 2.

There was no season AvR needed as they had two players better than the rest today. Maouche isn’t great and has gone straight into the reserves never to be used but McGuinness who was on loan from Arsenal might just have some potential so I will be trying to keep him and give him some game time now and again.

Hull - Home - League 1

Another home game against another promotion contender and it was another win for the Mighty Yellows. Hull did make thing interesting in the 2nd half after we had gone 2 up but we held on much to my relief as Will Grigg could have been off if it had been a draw.

The win was pleasing but so was the steal as I got one of my favourite Lower league wingers of the last 5 or 6 years in FM. Hakeeb Adelakun as been a go to player in league 1 for a long time with his pace and crossing ability and hopefully he can find a way into my side.

Ipswich - Home - Pizza Plate

It was Ipswich again and this time they got the better of us albeit on penalties after we had fought back for a draw with 10 men. I played a 2nd string side here to rest some players and try some other guys out and they did well so there is certainly some strength in depth in this 35+ man squad.
C8370CF2-8AD1-453F-B494-2E6326CA08B8.thumb.png.8eb428dbaa9e6d2378a7c5049fcf5bf7.pngFFA1DE95-BFE5-4D66-A058-840514BAE77F.thumb.png.7d16a95b231c892dcce99731113715ce.png

I hadn’t factored in penalty wins into the rules of the game and I could have said it was a draw in 90 minutes so a swap would be done but that felt a cop out. I lost the game and didn’t progress in the cup so they should get a player. The shootout was won by 1 goal so they get 1 player just as would happen in a match.

As I said I played a 2nd team but the loss of Josh Ruffels our back up LB was annoying as full backs don’t come along often in this save.

Blackpool - Away - League 1

We seem pretty unbeatable in the league at the moment and that form continued in Blackpool as my players shone brighter than the illuminations. It seems at te moment that if Grigg plays he scores and the save for Agyei as well.

BE18ADEC-B089-4429-838E-DDB478A4B6FB.thumb.png.750b085d84c6ab4e6f71175bbc13493d.png64C34156-6153-4B1D-8FB2-376F2CDD603C.thumb.png.7df44e90952a831ce5402951440d399c.png

All three players we took are pretty good although one, Chris Maxwell, is a GK and we have enough of them so he is off to the reserves. Gary Madine is a good TM who will get goals if and when he plays and then we actually got a LB to replace Ruffels with James Husband joining us on the bus home.

Northampton - Home - League 1

This is a derby of sorts and there is certainly no love lost between us and Northampton. There wasn’t much energy lost by us either as we won easily with Joe Garner scoring his first goal for us, Grigg getting his now customary goal and Camps completing the scoring.

B4AFECC0-BB33-46D9-9C28-967717B188AE.thumb.png.a07bf6bc136e857e3629e88ba82ba0ee.png1933BE02-6AE5-4463-8BB9-A3BF0EA4046E.thumb.png.c45bc13d4840e1f61f835aefe2e9ef48.png

Despite conceding three goals Northampton’s two CB were the highest rated players and both look decent. Luka Racic looks the pick of the two as he is only 21 and might be a player @Mr Tree knows something about as he was on loan from Brentford. Bolger looks ok as well but Mitch Austin won’t be hanging around long.

Bristol Rovers - Away - League 1

This is another match that can also get tasty at times and this was a real humdinger of a game. It looked like we were heading for a draw and a player swap but Hinds got us the win with 9 minutes to go.

I thought I might get Erhun Öztümer who has a reputation at League 1 level as being quite the flair player but he had a lower season AvR than Westbrooke so it was him who joined us. He looks a decent enough CM and might see some game time soon.

That takes us up to Boxing Day and we are now sitting pretty at the top of the league with a 10 point cushion over 3rd. It’s hard to not see us going up at this stage but one or two lost games could change that if we lose key players in them.

Yeah i like Racic IRL, we've just brought him back actually (he didn't have a good time in reality) - i believe @Ianused him a fair bit in fmm20 or maybe even 19, too...

Looking very strong at the top and Will Grigg still seems to be performing well.

I did indeed use him a good few times on the 19 game and he never let me down. It was my Queen’s Park save where I first used him and he was first choice centre back the year we first won the Champions League. I notice Sean Clare scoring here too and he was also an integral part of that Queen’s Park side at some point.

He looks a good steal so I will be trying to give him plenty of playing time.

Quality striker if you know how to use him which no one at Sunderland has done yet.

More likely lose half my squad!

A great month, it's a shame about the pizza plate. But I'm guessing you'd just end up with a load more players you didn't need.

I’m not too worried about the pizza plate because as you said I don’t have much to gain in terms of quality players.

Season 1 - Xmas and New Year

🎶It’s Christmas time and there’s no need to be afraid🎶

Unless you are a League 1 team taking on the might of my Oxford United team.

Wimbledon - Home - League 1

There was no Christmas cheer for the Wombles as Brannagan and then a Will Grigg brace tore them apart in the 1st half before I tightened up in the 2nd half just to make sure I didn’t take any more players I would have no need for.

As it was the players I took weren’t that bad with a couple of decent CB’s and then Ollie Palmer is a more than capable TM. All round it was a bad day for the Don’s as they loss the game and loss three players who must be first team regulars.

This was another game that I was looking to close out when I was 2-1 up but the Plymouth got back into it and we had to make them pay for there audacity as we smashed in two goals in the last 10 minutes to get a 3 goal winning margin. Ollie Palmer marked his debut with a goal as he showed he was a decent capture.

The two goalscorers join up with midfielder Camará looking a good option to go along all the other good options I have. The other two players went straight into the reserves meaning they will never play in the first team.

Burton - Away - League 1

I have come up against a few former Yellows in this save so far and have even signed a couple. Few of our former players have put more effort into rejoining The U’s than Kane Hemmings though as he waited for us to be 3 up before cracking in two goals to boost his rating. I would have happily took a 1 goal win but Agyei didn’t get the memo that we were containing and got one right at the end.

Hemmings got his dream move back and it would be rude if I had just put him in the stiffs so I will try and find a place for him to play at some point. Kieran Wallace was the player Agyei’s goal got us and he isn’t likely to play.

Shrewsbury - Home - League 1

It feels like we play Shrewsbury every update and we built up to the FA Cup 3rd round game with Exeter by taking on the Shrews. Gary Madine was my TM of choice today and he spanked in a couple in a very routine match where the 2nd half was a real non event.

We picked up a couple of fairly good looking players with Udoh looking a good striker and then a LB/CB in Sowah but whether either will ever play for us I don’t know.

We are looking set to win the league now and barring disaster I’m sure my vast collection of players will be in the Championship next season. The FA Cup could make things interesting though if we can beat Exeter and then draw a really big team.

Half Season Player In’s and Out’s Round Up

So far I have lost 6 players to other clubs stealing them. Four of those players are guys that started at the club from the beginning of the save with Henry and Taylor in the first two games being particularly annoying.

72228013-55B1-4E5F-8527-8DFDA938856F.thumb.jpeg.f085447851996a48fba54ab9eb6f8c93.jpeg

Obviously with so many players joining the club it has meant that players have had to leave to keep the squad below the maximum squad size of 80 across the first team and reserves. As I stated in the rules in the OP once players get relegated to the reserves they can’t be promoted back to the first team so a few players have moaned. When that happens I instantly release them and I have also released a few when I needed to make room to relegate more players.

In total 11 players have been released from the club.

The player in list is far, far longer and totals 54 players at the moment!

Remember some of these players were on loan at the club I took them from which is why they are listed as coming from clubs like Leeds and Arsenal.

My favourite steal so far is definitely Will Grigg. He didn’t set my pulse racing when I first won him early on but since he joined he has been a goal machine and basically if he plays he tends to score which is decent as he is playing in a front 4 most of the time.

Great month again there Fox, I’m sure Poleon was a decent player a couple of years ago on FMM.

Madine doing well, some of the stories from his time at Cardiff are crazy and that’s why he got let go! Paying people to fight him 😂

Look forward to seeing the next update!
