Massive to get Pellegri out of the way. 👏

Risky move not just sticking Esposito & Badji up front together, I feel. What does Esposito look like now? Tbh, you have to fully focus on Badji. It's gonna be tight, man. Shit just got real. 🤣

At this point both options are very risky. Focus on Badji and leave out Esposito for later or focus on both. I can see Badji nailing this but not 100% sure Esposito could. I really hope he can

Thanks mate! Felt good. Badji has taken a few weeks to get back to fitness, and I'm about to play his first game back and I think I've decided to stick with P (Esposito) and TM (Badji) and see how it goes. If he can score as well as Pellegri was, it might be enough. But if he doesn't I'll have to try something different.

As for Esposito, this is his current screenshot (better than the others, but not that much):

Esposito should be okay as he has 3.5 years left on contract, but Badji only has 1.5 years left. I'm pretty confident that Esposito will get enough from the final two seasons, even if he is just getting penalties that point! But I probably shouldn't take anything for granted.

Well done on getting Pellegri to the magic land, I am sure you’ll find a way to get the other two up to that 1,000. Good luck mate 😁

I've got everything crossed mate. I think if Badji stays healthy, he's in for a good chance of making the 1K before his contract is up. But by no means gauranteed...

Season 17

As covered above, Pellegri made it to 1KC mid-season. Job done old mate. Time for you to get some time on the bench.

Our attention moved to Badji, who has until the end of next season to reach the target, before his contract expires. He moved into the TM role, while Esposito played in the P role for 3 or 4 games. However he was outscoring Badji, so I switched him to a DLF.

Anyway, let's see what happened during the rest of the season.

Results

We won everything again this year, though league goals were very low with only 103 (compared to 141 last year and 179 at our best):

Which gives us:

Season Esposito Pellegri Badji
01 38 19 24
02 60 63 50
03 41 71 51
04 60 65 49

14 61 49 41
15 56 39 45
16 35 72 34
17 27 47 39
Total 928 1001 940

Decent effort by Badji, but would have liked a few more to be honest.

Final Thoughts

Pellegri's contract runs out in a month and we'll see if he'll sign a new one as it runs down. That could be a guide to what Badji may do 12 months later.

If Badji won't sign a new contract, he has only 1 season left to score 60 goals. Pellegri got 72 in the same role, but Badji is a little worse for wear. So it's going to go down to the wire. Any serious injury will kill his chances, though he is very rarely injured.

As for Esposito, he needs 72 more goals, but he has 3 seasons left before his contract runs out, so should be safe.

Thanks for reading and see you next season!

Oh man. Was hoping Badji would hit around 60. Still a chance he'll extend his contract. Only need another year I'd say. Hopefully he does. Great going otherwise. Fingers crossed, still. 🤞

Nah, wasn't expecting that much because he didn't take over as main man until two thirds of the season was gone. I was hoping for a little more than he got, but I don't think 60 would have been possible. He's had a good start in the next season (better than I expected), but my strikers always do perform better in the first couple of months..

So... Pellegri waited until his contract expired and then happily signed a new 5 year contract. So we'll keep him coming off the bench until this finishes.

Most importantly it means that Badji is likely to sign a new contract when his expires at the end of the new/current season. I've seen that happen quite a lot before, but I wasn't sure a 36 year old would do it rather than just hang up their boots.

Anyway, that probably means Badji doesn't need to get 60 this season, but he's making a good start to it anyway:

I'm sure he won't keep that up - my strikers always score really well in the first couple of months before slowing down a lot, but at least he's put himself in a good position.

Good output from your ageing stars!

13 in 6 games is a decent return, if you can keep up that pace for the first half of a season fingers crossed it'll be enough to carry him through untill the end of the season.

But I reckon you'll need at least another season out of him.

Espo can just happily plod along smashing in half that number!

Thanks mate. After that, he went 1, 1, 0, 0, 2, 2. I was just thinking he was in trouble, so the last couple of braces were welcome. Esposito only has 5 goal from 12, so lucky he has a few seasons left!

Fingers crossed he can turn it around and hit the ground running (as it were) when he returns but he might need another season, if he'll sign that new contract.

It's gonna be tight, but might still get it this season, as long as there are no more injuries...

Season 18

Let's cut right to the chase. Our main goal this year was to get Badji 60 goals, so he'd reach the 1K before his contract expires at the end of the season.

As covered above, Badji was steaming towards the target with 28 goal from 19 games before he picked up a month long injury... Would that derail him, or could he come back from that and still get the remaining 32 goals?

He'd timed the injury well, as it coincided with a long break for the World Cup. In the end, he only missed 5 games, so he still had a chance. That said, when he came back, he looked like this:

beijing-3x1K-s18-20.jpg.5bea159c43635158270da20870b7e8f7.jpg

Anyway, it seems it doesn't matter how bad a player is, if the rest of the team is world class and the tactic is decent, they will score. And so it proved.

Fast forward to September and he'd scored 45 from 33 games:

beijing-3x1K-s18-24.jpg.b78546728180cacd3a15c09a09084272.jpg

With 11 games to go, he needed 15 goals. Now mathematically, 45 divided by 33 is exactly the same as 15 divided by 11. So if he continued scoring at the same rate, he would get exactly 60 (and the 1K).

Of course we all know football doesn't quite work out like that. A few great games and he'd cruise home. A few bad games and he'd fall short...

So let's see what happened:

Spoiler

beijing-3x1K-s18-26.jpg.05e111fd325450344edbc6ac9002eb0d.jpg

Well... Mathematicize that...

Once again, he'd timed the injury well. There are odd gaps towards the end of the Chinese season, meaning he only missed 6 games. Which left him needing 15 goals from 5 games.

Of course that was too much, even for The Badj... He only got 6. So we better hope he signs a new contract or we'll have failed by only 9 goals.

With that out of the way, let's get on with the rest of the update...

  • Badji: A one month injury, followed by a 2 month injury.

  • Esposito: A 3 week injury, followed by a 2 week injury after the season finished.

  • Pellegri: A 10 day injury, followed by a 3 week injury.

Final Thoughts

Esposito should be fine with a few more years to get 34 goals.

The key is Badji - he only needs 9 more goals but he's out of contract shortly and steadfastly refuses to sign a new one. Hopefully he'll sign once his current one expires, as Pellegri did, but this looks ominous:

Considering whether to remain in football... Let's hope he does! I guess we'll find out in a few short weeks...

Thanks for reading and see you next season (though it remains to be seen whether it's for a 3x1KC or a 2x1KC).

Damn it, I feel this could be it for Badji! So close too! If only you could get him for half a season.

I'm surprised he hasn't called it quits and just retired immediately after getting to groin strains in such a short time frame, so fingers crossed he still wants to play and signs a new contract before retiring.

Gulp... I've never had an immediate injury retirement to a main player before, don't wish that on me! 😄 I have had players do a shock retirement at the start of the next season (only 7 goals short of 1.5K too).

Anyway, I'm hoping he will do as Pellegri did and sign again. That's what most players do. I just can't shake the worry that he'll decide to retire, given he turns 37 in a week or so.

I can't remember if it was to one of my players or not. But it might have been a career ending injury to an older player and they just called it quits.

Yeah, I've seen it happen, but definitely not to one of my challenge players and I think not even to anyone on my team, just someone on my shortlist. But really scary stuff!

9 freaking goals! 🥺 That's messed up man. The FMM gods are bastards at times. 😡 Seriously hope he does extend his career. 🤞

Those numbers are still impressive considering how they look. As you say, a World class team and successful tactic matter just as much as your target players.
