Career Ian attempts Badge 08: Borussia Babes

Recommended Posts

Hello and welcome to my attempt at the Borussia Babes challenge. The challenge was created by @Scratch and can be found here.

Season 1

For the first season I decided to go with Szoboszlai as my fifth wonderkid with the idea that he could play in multiple positions. I debated a little on how I was going to approach this but having just come from completing the Ronaldo challenge it was too tempting just to go with that system and see how it performed here in Germany with a not so good squad.

I tried to improve the squad as I can’t say I liked the look of it. A little wheeling and dealing was done and we were ready for the new season.

The season was largely mixed as we huffed and puffed in the league but couldn’t keep up the pace with Bayern so the target of winning the league was not chalked off. We were close though so that target certainly looked attainable for season two. The two domestic cups were won but we exited the Champions League at the quarter final to Barca after extra time so that target would also have to wait until season two.

The players contributed reasonably to the cause and all improved over the season but Haaland’s big jump up in stamina really caught my eye as it just rocketed up towards the end of the season.

Season 2

I debated a change of system for this season purely because of the Champions League final target as I didn’t have the utmost confidence that my season one system would be able to deliver. In the end I decided to stick with what I started with and try to improve the squad.

My season two wonderkid was Martinelli.

I had the idea to bring in Grealish to play as our main playmaker in the hope that that might help us in those important Champions League games. I brought a new keeper in to hopefully improve upon the guy we already had and I think we just about manage that. A couple of new wide players came in and Brozovic was replaced in January purely because he’s down as a negative in the dynamics.

After just scraping past Inter in the first knockout round of the Champions League we then faced off against Man Utd in the quarter final. You can probably tell where we’re going with this so I’ll not delay things.

I decided based on the tight inter game to try something a bit more balanced in the first away leg. It didn’t work as we lost 3-1 with Greenwood netting a hat trick.

BEF19EC0-3469-4692-BE0E-8400D861CE12.thumb.png.712aadb32cc2ba131c13acfacaf8db1f.png

After much debate I decided to go with the more attacking system in the hope that we’d just blast them away. Unfortunately, it didn’t pan out like that as after going 3-0 up fairly early on we ended up going out on away goals.

A9D2B7BD-1B68-4C5D-AA52-6737BC40B884.thumb.png.026695421849288ebc7929cc1d0a170a.png

So that’s basically the challenge failed but as we were near the end I decided to play on purely to see how the players would do and for future reference for myself.

We won the league easily enough and the two domestic cups so it’s just the Champions League that’s let us down which was always my concern.

Final Thoughts

So we’ve failed at the first attempt and now I’ll need to have another go if I’m to collect this badge. I just can’t see me getting the job done with this system so something else will be required, maybe something more central based like my goaltopia tactic or maybe the one I used for the Rooney challenge but something else definitely.

Thank you for reading.

I’m worried about the champions league as well Ian, such a tough one, such a shame you didn’t get to the final. Some great scores from your players and it’s making me think what am I doing wrong in training as my players look awful 😂

That Champs Cup is an absolute killer. Looking forward to seeing how you do with the other tactic.

Thank you Rob, back to the drawing board although I may just have a go with my Rooney tactic as it wasn’t exactly goal shy and certainly would give me a better chance in the CL.

Thank you Richard, yeah the CL was always my concern with this tactic and it’s usually a case of hammering the other team in terms of shots but then somehow getting beat which can be annoying 😂

I can’t complain about the players as they seemed to develop well and I can see how good Haaland can be.

I’ll be back again with another attempt.

Bad luck mate. That CL benchmark is really hit and miss! Just got to try again and hope for an easier run I guess. Looked great other than that though.

Damn, that is rough... I hope someone is going to be able to actually win this badge! If everyone fails it, we might have to loosen that a bit. I was worried about the CL final part, but my trusty advisors said "Nah, that'll be fine, leave that in"...

Anyway, that's a great score, hope you can match it and make the CL final next time.

Cheers Chris, I think my system was just too gung ho but perhaps it could work with a different approach in terms of players. I was planning on maybe changing things if I felt the CL just wasn’t going to work in the second season but unfortunately we had a really easy group so weren’t tested against the elite clubs. When we played inter in the first knockout round it was a bit of an eye opener as it was tight and I knew then we were up against it. I tried to go with something safer in the next round away at Man U but it was probably too much to ask of the players to get used to the new system straight away. I’m going to have a go with a different system as the main one but may set up in a way so I can perhaps switch to the gung ho system for a good few of the easier games.

Thank you Scratch, plenty will get it I’m sure but it is a nice challenge as it’s not quite as easy as it looks and you can get caught out if your approach isn’t right like what happened here 😂

I think I probably dived in too quickly but I’ll be back.

Can't wait to try it myself (midseason in a long term save right now, might have a go at the end of the season). The players aren't quite the right shape for my normal tactic, so not sure how I'll approach it yet... I'll probably fall short too if I use that tactic, not solid enough for cup runs.

Anyway, hope you come back an smash this!

Yeah I should’ve took more time to think things through before deciding to go the way I did. On the Ronaldo challenge where I used this tactic we might’ve won the CL but it took a very fortunate late game come back against Barca to get through one of the knockout rounds and that team was much better than anything I could create at Dortmund in the early years.

Good luck with your attempt, I may well have had another attempt by then though 😂

Attempt Two

After my previous failed attempt due to not being able to reach the Champions League final I decided to jump straight back in and have another go. I decided this time to go with a more safe system in terms of results which would surely give us a much better chance of making the team results benchmarks but would almost certainly make the player targets tougher due to the system not being very goal heavy. So basically if we’re successful here I can’t see this being a top end of the leaderboard effort but I’d take just getting on the leaderboard as a success at this stage.

Season 1

Player Choice

I use a lone centre forward and two inside forwards on this system so this guy seemed like a good choice as he can play both positions, well on the right anyway in terms of the inside forward role. There were other more expensive options that tempted me but I liked the idea of saving some funds to improve the squad.

Transfers

I didn’t go to town here and just brought in a few players I was confident would improve us. Last time I ended up buying a few older stopgap type players to cover us in a few positions which was a bit silly really as by the time we got to the second season they were declining rapidly and we were stuck with them on high wages so this time I was determined there’d be none of that. Most of the attacking positions in my system were taken up by our challengers so I focused on other weak areas. Two new quality centre backs arrived in a Langlet and Skriniar, Fabinho joined to predominantly sit at the base of the midfield and Partey came in to join Can as our first choice central midfield pairing. It’s a nice little set up in the middle as both Can and Fabinho can also play at centre back to a high level which gives us the option of maybe not needing quite so good backup options there. A couple of wing backs also came in and that was it. It seemed like a decent transfer window although I would’ve also liked to have improved on our first choice keeper but just couldn’t quite manage it. I’ve included the two who left as direct part exchanges as they wouldn’t show up on the basic in and out pages.

Team Results

All eyes were on our results here as I’d put a lot of faith in this system in the hope we’d be much stronger that way and we started well in winning our first three games of the season. We then had our first real test in the Super Cup where we’d face off against Bayern. It went well and we passed the test with flying colours to collect our first trophy.

Things were going well in the league and we got through our Champions League group to be drawn against Shaktar in the first knockout round. We got through that tie comfortably and would then face the mighty Real Madrid in the quarter final.

The away leg could hardly have gone better as we won 2-0 and restricted them to no shots on goal which I found rather baffling but there you go.

0B6387D7-C3B6-465A-B2A9-FEA756B359BE.thumb.png.217cfaa5cf38e27bb58f05e5610eaaaa.png

The boys saw it through in the return leg in winning the match 1-0 but it certainly wasn’t a thrilling encounter.

2DC2267F-EDF1-4A71-B3AA-722BA1C094E7.thumb.png.e37bac20fb3e02683c345c96e4c585df.png

I was absolutely thrilled to discover that Leipzig would be our semi final opponents, that’s not meant in a disrespectful way as they’re a good team but we certainly fancied our chances.

There wasn’t much in the first leg away from home and it looked to be heading towards a 1-1 draw until Poulsen came up with a last minute winner for them to make things interesting.

F5B990F8-A781-4818-8DD1-8A8468F2876C.thumb.png.314f326c3cd3ca3f1095fe378419ea66.png

The second leg was a bit of a nervy affair with everything that was at stake but we got through it thanks to a first half brace from Haaland.

0432D6E1-1D74-42D4-99A3-5EB83D5451D3.thumb.png.46effa19bc4c00191b0a9e35a4178cc7.png

At that stage of the season we needed just one more league victory to claim the title and the next game just so happened to be against Leipzig. It was Haaland again who scored the all important goal from the spot in a not so great game.

DE0CE547-0A93-45EB-81AB-5D8C06C48013.thumb.png.c70009a9dcacb8c41375c5bb67f096a3.png

You’ve probably noticed that although we’ve been fairly dominant; we've just not had the goal output but having ticked off the two result based benchmarks we now have the chance to go a different way in season two. We aren’t there yet though as we still have the following fixtures to play including the domestic cup final against Bayern and the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid so I’ll be back with another update later to cover those games and to see how the players performed.

Great going Ian! I had forgotten about Silas, I have him in my Chelsea game and by second season, his stats are fantastic. So hopefully he turns just as well for you, good luck with the rest of it 😁

I'm using Silas in my TTR currently - didn't get much out of him the first season, but he's come to life season 2. Never got a single point of aerial after a year of target man training, but he's got excellent shooting movement and dribbling.

Well done Ian on the league position. Really clinical so far.

Thanks Rob, it seems to be a decent system this for results but the goals are just not there and there’s been a few dreaded 0-0 draws in there which aren’t the best on these challenges. It’s a strange system though as even with a decent team the games always seem close in terms of stats but you usually get the result. It’s got the two results targets met though and now we can go gung ho in season two and hope for the best as the players should fit the system I’ve got in mind.

Thank you Richard, he looked decent but I was very close to going with Martinelli. He was going to cost a lot more though so I thought I’d just go with Silas. I have Martinelli in mind for season two but we’ll see as there seems to be a few decent options.

Without giving much away, it won’t come as much of a shock for me to admit at this stage that I didn’t get loads out of him either. Hopefully with the years growth and a more goal heavy system we’ll get more from him in season two.

Season 1 - Part Two

Just a brief update here so we can see how the opening season ended and what kind of returns the players got.

First up was Bayern in the domestic cup final and it was Haaland again who came up with the goods in a fairly comfortable 1-0 victory. He certainly seems to be the main man for the cup games.

We won the final two league games but I won’t show them as they don’t mean much as the league was already won and they weren’t massive score line victories or anything like that.

Atlético Madrid awaited us in the Champions League final which if we won would give us 20 bonus points so it would be very handy if we could after not being so goal heavy during the season. We went behind early on and I had a feeling things weren’t going to go for us but we fought back and probably just about deserved the victory as Silas scored the winning goal late on after they’d had a man sent off.

Here’s my manager's history page for confirmation of all I’ve posted above and on the previous update. It was a very successful season for the team so we can only be happy. Things could get nasty next year though as we’re going to be going for goals.

I thought I’d include the fixtures so you can see the horrible 0-0 draws which aren’t really what you’re after on these sort of challenges although it ain’t too bad for the goal difference.

Borussia Babes

You can see below that the boys contributed reasonably well but didn’t set the world alight. If I sort the players via goals or assists I still can’t get all five top in a row without any infiltrators which is slightly annoying but can’t be helped. They should all be ok for the target except for Bellingham who has a little job on his hands but with a little focus you’d think he can make it. With him being behind the rest I thought I’d focus on him in the final few league games so it was rather annoying to see him pick up that injury in the very next game against Leipzig that in the end confirmed us as champions. No real complaints though as unlike on my previous attempt that was the only injury any of them suffered so we’ve either been lucky, the system could be better in that respect or the fact that I mainly just rotated the five players into three positions helped us. It may well be a bit of all three or definitely a combination of the first and third I’d say and no doubt we’ll end up worse off in that regard next season.

Some steady growth from most of the players but Haaland didn’t get his massive stamina jump this time but Reyna’s crossing has powered up so he will probably be our main corner taker next year. Shame Bellingham looks stuck like that but he’s still decent and we need him to perform as he’s got plenty of ground to make up to get to his required target.

Final Thoughts

A nice season and pleasing to get the two team based benchmarks ticked off. Next season things will be different I’m sure as we’re going gung ho and probably with a system more similar to my goaltopia one with the attacking players more central in the hope that we can get a lot of one challenger assisting another type of stuff which really gets the points up on these sort of challenges.

Thank you for reading.

Very well done Ian. I like that you took care of the team benchmarks in season one and can basically smash the living heck out of teams season two. Great approach.

Great job mate, and I'm so relieved you met the benchmarks this time around! Was worried that this was going to end up in a farce with noone making it, but you're the third now. Mind you, you better watch that Bellingham!! Would be a shame if he let you down and you had to try a third time! 😄

Also, really like the approach of getting these benchmarks ticked off first season, and freeing yourself up to be more attacking in season 2.

Thank you Rob, it has worked out well. Hopefully the boys can find their shooting boots next season. It’ll certainly be fun that’s for sure.

Thanks Scratch, I probably should’ve thought things through a bit more before my first attempt, not just with the system but with some of my signings as I bought too many players the first season that wouldn’t last the two years. This time I was determined to only buy players that I was sure would be good for two seasons and even with the change of tactic I have planned for season two they should all be fine. It is a shame we couldn’t have got a few more out of Bellingham in season one but it still looks like he’ll be ok as long as he doesn’t get bad injuries. Reyna has developed quite well though this time and his crossing has jumped up a bit so he’ll be first choice corner taker.

Ah, yeah, I didn't go for anyone over 27 or 28. And I generally went for slightly younger players who will grow over the 2 years rather the players already in the prime (but 3 times the cost).

I've been a bit caught out by Bellingham getting the "needs to mature" immediately and presumably having that for a full year until his birthday at the end of season 1. Wasn't expecting that when we put this challenge together. I've got the same issue with Reyna to be honest, one update, then "needs to mature", but at least I only need to wait until November for his birthday.

Season 2

We had a successful first season in winning the Bundesliga and Champions League which ticked off two of the benchmarks leaving us with just the player targets to aim for in season two. Of course that meant we could be a bit more expansive which was what attempted to do.

Player Choice

This was my chosen player who we ended up signing with just one day to spare before he turned 21. I went for him mainly due to his versatility as he could play in any of the main positions in my system so we ended up in a situation where we could get all six in the first team together or just rotate the six into the three or four best positions so plenty of options.

Transfers

Not a lot going on here with just a couple of new faces along with our challenger as the squad seemed strong. I managed to get Goretzka this time who would no doubt move straight into the first team and Sabitzer would cover us in a load of positions.

Team Performances

After saying we would be going gung ho you’re probably looking at the goals scored and wondering what I was talking about but I did try to go more expansive but it just did pan out that way. We slipped up in the Champions League quarter final against Bayern but we did have a few injuries in the squad and I do feel like we’d win the competition plenty of times with this system.

Borussia Babes

There were a few injuries for the babes but nothing too bad, Sancho wanted a new challenge for most of the season which was slightly annoying but not sure if it hindered him to be honest as he performed pretty well when available.

All of the players ended up reaching their targets and all performed pretty well. It was Haaland always playing as a centre forward and the rest rotated around so it’s very difficult for me to gauge much about the tactic and performance of the different positions. All in all we’re happy enough and all of the players improved a good bit during the two seasons so good to see.

Final Thoughts

A very nice challenge which I thoroughly enjoyed even with the failed first attempt. It’s highly likely that I’ll play this challenge again at some point and more than likely will do when the winter update comes out as a way to see what changes have been made to the engine. I just hope I’ve added my score up correctly 😂

Thank you for reading.
