Career Foxy’s United Nations - The Final Part

Recommended Posts

Introduction

As much as I enjoy getting my name onto challenge leaderboards sometimes I like to simply set my own challenge to my own rules and play it out without thinking about a final score and how it matches up to everyone else. I am well beyond the point of finding playing this game for the sake of it or simply to win trophies interesting so I like a sub plot to all saves but I don’t always want them to be pressurised and sometimes I’m happy to just play to my own tune.

This save is inspired in part by two other careers that have been on Vibe on FMM19. The first save was done by @Ashez where he wanted to get a single goal from a player wearing every squad number there was. There was no leaderboard at the end and he was simply signing some fun players and effectively playing a game against himself.

The second save that inspired this one was done by myself where I traveled the world getting a striker to score from nations to tick that one off. It was completed as a journey so the nations had to neighbour each other to move onto the next one.

The Setup

The goal of this save is simple and that’s to get a player from every nation in my loaded DB to score at least 1 goal.

I have only loaded England but I have loaded all the divisions down to the NLN/S and I will be managing Man City because they give me a huge war chest of money in order to keep bringing players in I need although I will be mostly looking for the cheaper options from nations.

With the whole of England loaded there are players representing 147 different nations of the world and my simple goal in this save is to get 1 player from each of these nations to score at least 1 goal for my team. Obviously some nations will be easy as I already have some great players at the club and the likes of KdB or Aguero are going to tick off there countries very quickly. Some other nations might just be a bit more tricky though due to limited numbers of players.

This is my spreadsheet showing every nation that is represented in the DB I have loaded up.

In order to make this save work I have enabled a couple of unlockables so I don’t need to worry about work permits for players and the transfer windows are gone so that I can sign whoever I want when I want them. I will be signing all the players though and not using the IGE because I think managing my money is part of the fun of the save as well so I can’t just spaff all my dosh on big name players without leaving some in reserve to make sure I can sign the right players for the nations I need to complete.

The First Squad

I decided that my best bet was to concentrate on the countries that only have 1 player in the DB first so that I wouldn’t miss out on a country because a player retired out of the DB. There were a couple of countries like India which the only player available was in his mid 30’s and with them not being very good they might take there time to score so this seemed a sensible policy.

The only other rule I have set myself is that I will also only be having 1 player from any nation in my first team squad at a time as well just to add some more interesting squad building for myself and to make sure I am competitive but not able to just use players from the best nations. I can swap players out of the reserves though so for example once Jesus has scored and completed Brazil he will go and Ederson will be back in as my number 1 GK.

That means I started the season with this squad.

As you can see there is lots of randoms in there (there’s even more in the reserves waiting there turn as well) but also plenty of quality because I still need to win games so I can’t just pack the team with shitters and expect to keep my job and keep the save going. I will be looking for a nice balance between quality players in the team each game and a few players who are simply there to try and score and complete there home nation.

I think the covers the setup and my initial squad. I’m hoping for updates most days as I will be posting as I play instead of finishing the season and posting a whole seasons results.

Hopefully you will all follow along and enjoy reading the updates.

I remember these challenges from FMM19!

Good combination of challenges as you'll need a good turnover of players to get through the countries and the numbers.

Nice to see Bigi getting to live his dream once again after his injury fiasco at Newcastle/Rangers.

Season 1 - Part 1

I don’t think it will come as much surprise that the early part of this career is dominated by some of the big name players. In many ways this first update can be split into two parts separated by a tactic change and the beginning of seeing some of the more random names start to score later on.

I want to get a good number of attacking players on the pitch at one time so I can play a mixture of shitters that need to complete there nation and good players who can help win the match.

With that in mind I started with this tactic which has at least 5 attacking players in the front two lines and then even the AP and IWB’s will push forwards. This is quite a tried and tested set up for me that has yielded good results and plenty of goals in the past.

It’s hard to argue too much with the start here as well but the lost games to Chelsea and Inter were a big concern for me as we hardly laid a glove on them and that’s what made me rethink going into the Man Utd match but we will come to that later.

These early matches are good for getting some nations ticked off as it seems most goals resulted in another completed country. I have put the profile of more well known players under spoilers and then the more random guys I will show unspoilt.

Match 1 v Liverpool

This was a good start with two countries done although it could have been better of Jesus had scored his penalty.

Colombia 🇨🇴 - Famous for its large haired 90’s footballers and coffee along with some other stimulants - Juan Cuadrado

Match 2 v Spurs

Jesus did get the job done here and he is now into the reserves so that Ederson can come back into the first team and be my number 1. It was a productive game all round with both Gundogan and Sterling scoring as well.

Brazil 🇧🇷- Famous for beaches, rainforests and the beautiful game - Gabriel Jesus

Match 5

Sterling was at it again and it’s hard to be mad at him because we need to win games as well but it might be helpful if he would pass more often. That said he got injured after this game and hasn’t played since.

It was after this game I changed to a 4-2-4 which I have used a lot in the last three editions of FMM and I always enjoy because it’s such a loose and free scoring tactic. The games are often entertaining and if your team is good you more often than not come out as the winner by the end of the game.

The change lead to 10 wins in a row including the Man Utd game although we perhaps weren’t always as free scoring as I hoped we would be in every game.

Match 9 v Zenit

I had signed Petagna to play TM as I find he can be very creative in that role and allow others to score but he got two himself in this game. I was delighted see Sunil score in this game as he is one of the older players I needed to get a goal from before they retire.

Match 11 v Djurgardens

With 6 goals scored I would have hoped for more countries ticked off but I had to settle for just 3. I could have brought Çalhanoglu off after he got his first goal which might have been sensible but never mind.

Match 13 v Everton

The handy thing with CB’s is that the good ones can just be played in there right position and let them get on with defending safe in the knowledge that they will almost certainly get on the end of a corner at some point and score as both Laporte and Dias have done now.

After all those games we sit top of the league and are also well set to progress in the Champions League as well.

I would like to complete this challenge in 147 or less games if possible so that I average 1 nation or better being completed each game played. So far I am slightly ahead of that rate.

Games Played so Far - 17

Nations Ticked Off so Far - 20

Nations Completed per Match - 1.17 countries per game

This update was longer than I actually planned it to be but I played further ahead and decided I would post the whole lot so if you have got this far well done. It’s likely that future updates won’t be as long as this one.

Thanks for reading

which leagues do you use

All divisions in England. I could have had more nations with other leagues added but 147 seemed enough for this.

Nicely done for the nearly the first half of the season.

Are you doing the squad numbers next season? (I may have missed you saying that)

Thanks, I’m not doing squad numbers it was just that save by Ashez was part of the inspiration for the idea to do this one.

Well, you've won 3 awards already:

  • Most Effort (that spreadsheet man!)
  • Prettiest Screenshots (all those flags 😍)
  • Longest update (I couldn't even type that much)

I'm sure there are many more to come! Perhaps if you were share your transfer screen for eg - that must be insane! 😄

Anyway, very impressive start! I think 147 games might be a little ambitious as the average rate will surely drop a little when you only have smaller nations left, but I expect it won't take you much longer. Gonna be fun seeing some of those lesser known players.

Can’t beat some good flag action tbf.

That first update was much longer than I planned but I got carried away playing the save and just thought I would post it all in one go. From now on the updates will probably cover no more than a few nations at a time.

I will post all the transfers at the end of the season as that will probably be an updated worth of pictures in one go! 147 games is probably ambitious but it’s nice to have a target to try and get near as it keeps me motivated.

It's all good. Sometimes a long one is more satisfying. And I understand about the target, I've been known to choose a hard one myself.

Season 1 - Part 2

The team had made a strong start to the season even though we went out of the League Cup early. We got some revenge on Chelsea though as we knocked them out in the FA Cup on penalties in the 4th round.

In the league our form has suffered and I only have myself to blame as I have got too ambitious with the number of crappy players I have been playing at one time and from having a good lead at the top of the table we know find ourselves behind Liverpool and with some work to do if I want to win the title.

I will be having a bit of a rethink before the next update and making a new tactic with a solid base that I can then fit perhaps two really rubbish players into for each game and hopefully still get the results needed to win some games as well because being sacked trying to complete all the nations isn’t on my agenda.

There was no evidence of a loss of form at this stage as we put 4 past Arsenal and ticked off two countries in the process. Aubameyang got Arsenal’s goal which was a nice reminder that need to buy him at some stage because he is the only player in the DB from Gabon.

This result is more like it although it’s a shame I can’t claim the nationality of OG’s for my list as I would have completed two and not one country. Al Greene must be the oldest player I will use in this save I’m sure at 42 years old.

Croatia 🇭🇷- Croatia is home to the worlds largest truffle, apparently - Marcelo Brozovic

St Vincent and the Grenadines - St Vincent was named by Christopher Columbus as he reached the Island on that particular Saints feast day in 1498 - Chevron McClean

Match 26 v Burnley

The name of one of the goal scorers might be vaguely familiar to some of you as Manucho spent some time at Man Utd way back in 2008 making one appearance for the club.

Angola 🇦🇴- Angola’s official language is Portuguese making it the 2nd largest Portuguese speaking country in the world behind Brazil - Manucho

Match 28 v Chelsea

Chelsea did us in the League Cup and although it took extra time and penalties we exacted some revenge here in the FA Cup. The goal came from Man City and Blackburn old boy Roque Santa Cruz who had rejoined the club on a “score one goal then piss off” deal.

Paraguay 🇵🇾- Paraguay often ranks high as being one of the happiest countries in the world - Roque Santa Cruz

Match 30 v Spurs

We had just lost to Liverpool putting them too of the league so this was an important 3 points for us as well and another nation getting crossed off the list. I have seen us miss a few penalties so far this season so I was happy to see Rodri put this one away.

Spain 🇪🇸- Although Spanish is the official national language there are another 5 “official” languages spread around the country which are Aranese, Basque, Catalan, Galician and Valencian - Rodri

Match 31 v Leicester

We reach the end of the update and it’s another damaging loss in the league this time to Leicester. The blow was cushioned though a bit by getting another 2 nations complete.

Namibia 🇳🇦- The Sossusvlei area of Namibia contains some of the highest sand dunes in the world with some over 200m high - Ryan Nyambe

8E903750-998A-4BBD-8E55-499EB31387D9.thumb.png.b23d0494c72447ea62c14b2d95cbf702.png

Burundi 🇧🇮- Unfortunately Burundi is one of the 10 most poorest nations on Earth - Gaël Bigirimana

That brings to an end another update and 12 more countries have been completed.

Games Played: 31

Countries completed: 32

Countries per Game: 1.03

At this current rate I am on course to complete all the nations in 147 games but I need to make some slight changes so that this dip in form doesn’t continue for long. That in turn might slow down progress but time will tell on that.

Thanks for reading.

Great work! Progressing well...

Like the lads said, the stand outs have to be Al Greene (please keep him and do a 1KC with him!) and Roque Santa Cruz (Quiz question: "Name the two managers that signed Roque Santa Cruz for Man City").

I also have a soft spot for Nyambe, having used him many times has a cheap but effective right wing back.

@Rob - Thanks for the compliment and I’m glad you enjoy my ramblings.

@Woody and @Rich - I agree Santa looks pretty good all round considering he is 39 and although he had a decent career he was never world class so his attributes probably haven’t dropped by miles over the years.

@Scratch - I think I’m probably retired from 1kc’s now so I will leave that you :P As a guess at the quiz question I will say Sven and Mark Hughes.

@Chelseaplchamps2022 - I did nothing special.

Santa Cruz was already at a club and I threw some oily money at the club and then Roque and he signed.

Al Greene was without a club and I just offered him a deal and again he was happy to sign.

I think the problem comes with older players later in saves when they are deciding to retire and don’t want to sign or at least that’s my experience in the past.

Umm... No. The correct answer is Mark Hughes and Sir Fuddled Fox... I guess that didn't work... 🤣

What threw me off was I looked at his history in FMM and it looks like he had two spells at the club so I assumed I was the 3rd manager to sign him for Man City.

Ah, right, I see that now. I was looking at Wikipedia! 😄 On Wikipedia, his Real Betis/Hispalis stint is a loan, so I guess FMM just missed that part. I'm pretty sure you're the second and now part of a quiz question that will be brought out every so often for the next 30 years.

Season 1 - Update 3

Last time out form had taken a dip as Liverpool had gone past us to top of the league. The attacking 4-2-4 I was deploying simply wasn’t working as I was putting too many dodgy players i at once and so I said I would be having a rethink of the tactic.

This was the result of that rethink.

8994F9AE-A306-4208-BC84-76C692AC71F0.thumb.jpeg.d0089984dc51fcb9fb4e2e1f60fc8529.jpeg

Certainly not anything very special or unique as the idea is simple.

The triangle of the two CB’s and the DLP give a solid defensive base to the team aided as well by the WB’s and the BBM whilst they also give an attacking threat as well with the WB’s providing crosses and the BBM getting forward to support the front 3. The AP a provides the balls into the front 3 who are there for goals. I can then mix and match up front with better player to aid getting some wins and then players that are simply in to score a goal for the challenge. The TM role is useful as Petagna is a good link up player but I can also put a CB there if he needs a goal and that can be quite effective at times.

We drew with Man Utd but other than that the results have been very good including smashing 4 past Barca.

We are still 2nd in the league but we have closed the gap on Liverpool to just 2pts and the title could yet be coming our way if this form continues and I get the balance between results and completing nations right.

You will see that not many games were played but that is because they were successful in both results and in terms of getting more countries crossed off my list.

Match 32 v Crystal Palace

The new tactic had a decent start against Palace although we didn’t actually create much and only 1 striker scored.

Match 33 v Coventry

A team from the division below could have been a banana skin for us but instead the lads went goal crazy. Not only that 4 out of the 5 goalscorers ticked off there home countries.

Match 35 v Wolves

We created plenty in this game and ticked off another two countries. I signed Auba in a straight swap for Aguero and he was a much sign player because he is the only player from Gabon in this save.

Match 36 v Barcelona

I played a very strong side in this game with only Zé Luis (who is fairly decent anyway) being in the team to hopefully cross off his country which is exactly what he did.

Match 38 v Southampton

The three points were important here but I was more pleased with the goalscorer as I have been trying to get a goal from this lad for most of the season with no success till now.

This was a much better update with plenty of wins and nations ticked off helped massively by that Coventry game. That means I still keep just above 1 nation ticked off per game played which is the target.

Games played: 38

Nations completed: 41

Nations per game: 1.07 per game

Thanks for reading
