Just read the whole thing and thoroughly enjoyed following your journey with Hagi. I've been tempted to use him but never have. You have managed to get the best out of him anyway.

Well done on completing your challenge.

He has been immense for you and your career has been brilliant and very gun to follow. I hope the Gala job comes up as that would just top it off if he signed. 👍

Thank you all.

There’s been a bit of a delay here with life getting in the way. Another update is coming in a minute or so though to completely bring things up to date.

Season 14

There was a bit of a drop off this year for Ianis but he still hit over 30 of each and the team was still largely dominant. I couldn’t really ask for much more at this stage in truth He was willing to discuss terms of a new deal and it was tempting to just go ahead and tie him down but it was almost a certainty that he’d then announce his proposed retirement at the end of that deal which would scupper any chance we had of going to Galatasaray. Of course, he may then have reconsidered his proposed retirement if asked but he’s already done that once so it’d certainly not be a given. Anyway, I decided to just hold off for now.

Season 15

A very similar season to the last here for Hagi with both 31 goals and assists in 47 games. He’s very noticeably declining but he’s not a hindrance in terms of team results even though admittedly our goal output has taken a bit of a hit. His deal was up literally at the season cut off point and this was when I left the save for awhile as I debated what to do.

This is how things looked at the job centre and there was just nothing there. Those two poor teams from Turkey only just appeared in the last week or so and they are poor as I say. It hardly matters anyway as I felt if I wanted to continue I had no choice but to sign him up for longer at Inter. Not ideal but I knew if I didn’t someone else could at any time or he’d maybe just retire. So it was either continue on at Inter or call it a day.

Season 16

After leaving the save for a week or two I decided to come back and try to continue on as I felt there was still a bit left in it.

I signed Hagi up for a further five years which as I expected prompted him to announce his proposed retirement at the end of the deal. I asked him to reconsider and he agreed, so we still have at least a chance of one more move should the Galatasaray job ever come up.

Hagi had a decent season with 37 goals and 24 assists but the same can’t be said about the team as things were largely mixed there. We had a few cup disappointments including dropping out of the Italian Cup in the first round and it was only the league and Super Cup that we ended up winning but I don’t really put the inconsistency down to Ianis as there’s a few areas of the squad that I wasn’t happy with.

Season 17

No sign of the Galatasaray job so we played out another season at Inter and it was very much better as the team got back to their dominant ways. Hagi also produced a nice return with 32 goals and 30 assists but he is starting to look a bit rough and it’s safe to say he’s beyond the point of no return.

We still wait patiently for the Galatasaray job and it’s starting to look like it’ll never come. They only managed to finish fourth this season and failed to win a cup but looks like the board are happy enough with that.

Season 18

We went into the next season, played out the Club World Championship, prepared the Inter squad for the season ahead and then it finally came.

I applied, got the job and Hagi came with me. The season is just about to start so we’re pushed for time when it comes to building the squad but the transfer window is still open for a few weeks so we should be able to get some deals done.

Great stuff mate, that's massive. And still going strong! Looking forward to his Turkish swansong.

BTW, I am now doing a split 1K myself - something I'd been thinking about for a while, but you writing these up are what pushed me over the edge! 🙂

Awesome stuff Ian, what a journey, looking forward to seeing how he does in Turkey 😁

Thanks Rich, hopefully there’s still a little bit left in him. As long as having him in the team isn’t a massive hindrance and he can at least contribute something then I’ll be happy enough.

Cheers Scratch, it’s just what I wanted so I’m pretty happy with it. I mean we’ve managed to manage a team in each of the loaded leagues and to finish up at his favourite club is perfect when it comes to what we wanted to do.

Cheers Woody, it certainly is dream stuff. It was the way I was hoping things would go with us starting out at a Rangers, having spells in Italy and Spain in the middle and then finishing up at Galatasaray. Can’t really ask for more really and glad I kept going as it wouldn’t have felt quite right leaving it a few seasons back.

Thank you Smoggy, hopefully he can keep going for a few seasons so we can at least try to win all of the domestic trophies on offer here. After that, I’ll be happy to finish at any time but I’ll go for as long as he wants to.

Season 18 - Galatasaray

As soon as I took over I had a quick look at the squad and it was largely mixed as although there were plenty of decent players, there was also plenty of deadwood that I’d ideally prefer to offload. We were very much pushed for time with the season literally about to start so it was a bit of a challenge in trying to put together a decent team for the season.

Here are the transfers which aren’t very interesting as we’re well into regen territory but I thought I’d at least show them with it being the first season here. Some were made before I arrived but we did manage to bring in a few players and I was happy after the window ended as I felt we’d very much managed to improve the squad. Some of the better players already here were kind of getting on a bit and I even bought a few older players as I felt we needed to play a bit for now to try and hit the ground running, so we’ll have a bit of work on our hands over the next few years as we try to gradually rebuild.

We were in the third tier European competition and the qualification rounds for that started straight away with us playing a very poor team. We were still rebuilding as we arrived at the first league fixture and it was intriguing as you just want to get an idea of where you’re at. It wasn’t great as we drew 0-0. The thing where the scores are off and the display is wrong on some games has happened this season which I’ve put down to too much happening. We started at Inter in the CWC and ended up in a different league and it looks like it’s too much for the game to handle and things have gone off. Anyway, in this game the stats have been flipped as it was surely us with 20 odd shots and hardly any on target.

Things improved and we were going well in all competitions until we hit a bit of a poor spell around February time, culminating with us going out of the cup and also denting our title chances as we were neck and neck with Besiktas at this stage.

We weathered it and went on a great run and basically overpowered them to claim the title which we were very happy with.

Europe went well too as we didn’t play any good teams until the final to be honest. The semi was against Fenerbache who only ended up finishing fifth in our league which kind of tells the story. Unfortunately Spurs were too much for us in the final and these stats aren’t from the same game I don’t think as it was a pretty even game if I remember correctly. Anyway, it was slightly annoying to lose here as it would’ve been nice to have won this competition as we may never get the chance to play in it again.

I’ve put this game down as the highlight, purely because Hagi showed he’s still somewhat got it and it was near the end of the season too which gives us confidence going forward.

Ianis ended up with 36 goals and 26 assists in all competitions which I was very happy with. He was doing well in Europe right from the off but it took awhile for him to get going in the league. It was a bit concerning at the time but he ended up doing well so it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on next season as we should be in a higher quality European comp.

Another very serious return there Ian! Especially now those stats are sliding. Top work, your system really does the business.

Thank you Stuart, yeah he’s getting pretty rough now but I suppose the good thing is that he’s not chasing anything. I mean, I have looked at it and perhaps he could hit 750 of each but I can’t see how he could hit say 1k of each. Ultimately, it’s just a relaxed play out from here and I will go for as long as he wants to.

A quick mini update.

We’ve managed to reach the Champions League final and it’s Spurs who we’ll face off against. If you remember they beat us in the third tier European final last year, not only that but we played them in our CL group stage this season so there’s a bit of a back story.

917ACD13-71E5-4529-9D37-86ADF2908C3D.thumb.png.cce55bb3e9b53d5e321afb424efaf149.png

We got the better of them in the group stage as we beat them twice and won the group but of course that doesn’t mean we’re all set to just turn up and win the final as that’s not how things work. It was nice to also draw our former club Inter Milan and it was honours even as far as that battle went with 1-0 being the scoreline in both games. Hagi didn’t produce in either game though so no point showing the games really.

222C66A4-8F4E-468D-9603-D660C69FC5D0.thumb.jpeg.cd175c51196b3cea2e9ea79fde8af7d7.jpeg

We best Benfica, Man Utd and PSG on route to the final which I’ll be playing shortly. I’m just debating whether to play Hagi to be honest, he’s at 92% condition and not tired so very much available but he is a slight hindrance at this stage so it’s not a straightforward decision.

I’ll take the dog out, then play it out and will be back with the update.

It’s half time and I’m going to have to take him off here as they’ve been slightly the better side even though we took the lead.

Off he went and his replacement made his mark almost instantly as he got us back in front. He assisted another goal late on which more or less confirmed us as the victors. Happy days.

Season 19

As you may have seen further up, we had a successful European campaign as we went all the way to the Champions League final where we beat Spurs to claim the trophy. If we managed to do that then you’re probably thinking that we’d have also done well domestically, well you’re about to find out if that was indeed the case as I’m here with the full season update.

I think this will be the last time I put the transfer shots up as it just isn’t interesting in the slightest now with all of the players being regens. I did mention last time that we had a good few older players, so the plan here was to slightly rectify that which we did. We do still have a few older players on high wages though that I just couldn’t offload but we managed to build a nice squad so those players would surely not even be required and were basically just sitting in the reserves. Most of them are out of contract at the end of this season so that’ll free up a bit of cash next year getting them off the books. Anyway, I was very happy with the window as we built a squad with pretty much exactly two players for each position and usually two similar quality players too, so I felt we were very strong.

This was the team sheet going into the European final, I thought I’d show it as it shows the perfect relationship lines for this system. Obviously, it takes a little while to get to this level when you make a lot of changes to the personnel and things can often be a bit mixed in terms of form until you get there. I find the lines between the wide players are especially important with this particular system. Anyway, I only showed this as this is usually my concern every season early on if we’ve made a lot of changes like I did this season and you’re just hoping you can get to the level like this without too many issues with form.

Unfortunately the match screens are all messed up again with the wrong stats and scorers which is slightly annoying so I’ve just decided to just show the fixtures here to give you an idea of how the season went. We started really well and then all of a sudden hit a poor spell which included losing two league games in a row. I was a bit concerned at this stage to be honest and I was kind of thinking that perhaps having Hagi in the team was going to be too much of a hindrance. Luckily things got better and those three early defeats in a row turned out to be the only defeats of the season so we can’t ask for more than that. We won both domestic cups too which means we’ve won all of the domestic trophies on offer here which isn’t much but is a nice little side challenge completed. If this match screen thing is going to be the norm going forward then I think I’ll start taking more live shots to kind of get around it. I do like this league though I have to say. It’s two legged rounds all the way to the final of the main cup and you often get a poor team in some of the earlier rounds which offers a good chance to rack up a few goals.

With having a successful European campaign we now have a few players valued rather highly including our best striker below. He’s valued at £93m and it’s got me thinking that if I start getting massive offers coming in for some of our players I’m going to be very tempted to take them. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in that regard.

Hagi did well again with a return not too dissimilar to last year with 33 goals and 26 assists. Hopefully he can keep going long enough to hit the 1.5k 50/50 as that is certainly looking doable. He’s not doing very well in the tougher European games so I think I’ll prioritise the domestic games for him from now on as it’s a struggle to keep his fitness up.

Considering the way he looks now he's so old his returns are great! It's so amazing how you managed to win the Champions Cup after such a short time at Galatasaray. Well done.

Thanks Rich, hopefully he can keep things like this for a few more seasons. If he’s around the 20 mark for both then there’s enough there to kind of make it worthwhile.

Thank you Dai, the European success surprised me too especially after we lost the first match against Inter. We went two down early on against PSG in the first leg of the semi and I thought that that would be that but no we managed to come back.

I mentioned earlier liking the league here and the cup schedule in particular and here’s a prime example.

Their team was largely filled with greyed out players and this was one of their defenders to give you an idea of the sort of quality we’re looking at.

Amazing results for a 40 year old!

I think I might try and do a 1k in Turkey next game. The level of the teams seems mediocre, but there are some Champions League quality teams there, and there seems to be no Visa restrictions :)

Thank you, it is a very good league and the cup competition is nice as you get two legged rounds all the way to the final. You often get a really poor team in the first couple of rounds and playing them twice gives you more chance of at least getting a big return in one of the games.

There’s a bit of a bug in this league this year too as the five substitute rule stays throughout. It really helps with keeping everyone really fresh and I suppose it’s a bit controversial here with it being a challenge but I’m not too fussed as I’m not really concerned about leaderboards atm. Plus it’s not my fault anyway.

Woah! those contributions are abnormal for such set of attributes in a player :O

Thanks Broodje, he’s certainly doing better than I was expecting.
