Feels like Davies would be a sound addition for the LB spot, also would recommend Atal for RB since he's usually good most of the time whilst providing a different skillset to what Hateboer has

Yes I’ve been looking at Davies vs Gaya for the left back slot. Here’s a comparison of the two:

• Davies - young (22) + very fast => should improve + great for ~10 seasons.
• Gaya - a better defender (tackling, decisions, positioning) - but only great for ~5 seasons.

It's a tough call, since Gayà is about to hit his peak next season. You'd definitely gotta decide yourself

 

Personally i would look at the RB option to make a decision on who to buy the player who's filling my LB spot. Gayà if my RB is a dribbler type, Davies if my RB is a passer type. That way there's a sense of balance in terms of our attacking profile with each flank complimenting one another

After an awful January, Manager Mancini extended his employment with this great run in February...

You’ll notice a Carabao Cup win over Spurs - a trophy + $20m? Thank you!

You’ll also notice an FA Cup final win over Chelsea - another trophy + $30m?! Great job guys!

... but what’s that ... ? ... Wow! We’ll be playing Paris SG in our first Champions League final !!!

Considering this challenge is about winning 5 ECLs, this is a major opportunity to get that 1st win 🙂
 

The Cups:

A surprising ‘clean sweep‘ of the domestic cups gives us an $60m extra in funds (10+20+30) 👍

After our poor January form, I don’t have high hopes...

Ok I can happily accept finishing 2nd. What I can not accept is only 73 points. That’s worse than the 78 + 79 points in the past seasons.

Add Mbappe to the squad + get fewer points? Unacceptable.

Our Squad:

Firstly we said ‘bye!’ to Martial late in January. That’s another 42.5m into my expanding warchest!

I won’t include the Koulibaly sale into my budget / balance - as my manager bought him, so it feels that her doesn’t really count’.

I’ll put our squad screenshots into a spoiler:

Keeper Onana continues to be great - though could do with more support in front of him.

Lukaku + Mbappe scored + played well ... just NOT AT THE SAME TIME argh!

Lookman + Alli played decently in their IF positions - that surprised me.

The first choice CMs continue to get 10-12 assists each per season. Not bad.

Barella only played 8 times this season. That’s terrible. 

Even worse is that Haaland barely plays. He’s not improving. That’s almost a sackable offence Mancini!

There continues to be players who get <7.00 ratings. But as it’s not a normal save, I can’t just ‘sell them’.

Tadic barely played - he’ll retire soon.

And Luke Shaw rots in the reserves while 33 years old Ismaily plays almost every first team game!

The Mbappe / Lukaku / Haaland issue is (emotionally) my team’s biggest problem. 
 

Next:

For a challenge which requires 5 ECL wins, this game is kind of important!

The Current Guy

In one + a half seasons, Mancini has  won the league, all the domestic cups, plus reached a semi-final + a final in Europe. Sounds successful.

BUT I’m thinking of replacing him with a manager who plays 2 upfront, as Mancini keeps rotating between Mbappe + Lukaku upfront in a 41221.

The Other Guys

I want 2 upfront. But I don’t want a traditional English 442.

So that gives me variations of 532 again - and that didn’t work out well for Conte... so I’ll also consider 442 variations like 4312 + 442 diamond.

Option 1: Inzaghi 

The solid choice. Another Italian. Has the highest ability of our other options, but plays a slightly defensive looking 5122.

The attacking choice. The German manager is now managing Malaga + prefers a more attack looking 5212. I love the AMC + 2 STs, but do we really need 3 CBs?

I’m tempted to ‘take the road less travelled’ + go with one of the latter two managers. Give them until Jan 1st + if it isn’t working out, then switch to the other one. Let’s see.

If anyone is interested in why I'm sacking Mancini - here's the proof ...

Season 3 had the WORST points per game (in the league) - adding Mbappe (& playing him as a TM instead of Lukaku) actually made us score less goals than previous seasons! 

Plus below you can see why Conte was fired in the middle of season 2. After a great start, his points per game ratio was dropping throughout season 1, and in the first half of Season 2 it fell even further.

Mancini came in - had a game changing second half to that season, but Mancini has had decreasing league performance ever since.

Welcome Messi! The romantic’s choice. This is a beautiful gamble.

• By Jan 1st, at least 2 points per league game + progression into the ECL knockouts.
• Plus he must play Mbappe out wide - if Mbappe is played as an TM then I’m sacking him in the new year.  
   

 Transfers:

The previous manager had some (AI decided) transfers already done.

• Wendell joins as a backup DL.
• Chelsea’s Kepa joins as another backup GK.
• The AI sold Gabriel but I edited him back for depth at CB.
• The AI also sold Luke Shaw - this time he’ll stay sold.

Plus after finishing 2nd in the league, I get a transfer opportunity with my $249m (edit: $229m) transfer warchest!

Predictions (for season 4)

• League - min 2 points a game, so to round up, ~80 points is great. Must reach top 4.
• Europe - surely it’s too much to ask Messi to win it in his 1st season in management?
• Stars - playing a 4231 with Mbappe + Lukaku/Haaland is a requirement. Otherwise I’ll find another manager who will!
• Retireees - Ronaldo has told us he’s (finally) retiring at the end of this season - so we get an extra transfer to replace him -  that’s why I’m saving the $$$ warchest!

Mid-Season Update    

   
Fixtures:

It started so well.

3 wins in the league + another community shield win! Messi’s first trophy + another $10m!

By Jan 1st the results had some yellow + red included - but still looks decent.

The League:

2nd so far!

44 point after 20 league games is 2.2 Pts/game, thankfully above manager Messi’s target of 2pts/game, so that’s excellent.

Interestingly Arsenal are 1 point ahead of us + top of the league. While Liverpool + Spurs are a few points behind us.

The Team:

Am delighted that Mbappe is playing out wide as an Inside Forward - with Lukaku / Haaland as the central ST / TM - as intended when we got Mbappe onto the team!

The player stats are interesting though. 

• Lukaku is doing fine - but Haaland + Mbappe are struggling.
• Deli Alli is scoring + creating - but with a poor average rating (many games where he gets a 6?)
• New left-back Gaya is doing really well.
• GK Onana was injured + out for 6 games, which didn’t help.
• The rest of the team are mostly pretty good + solid.

Yes it’s a group of death - but this challenge is about winning the ECL 5 times. We can’t do that if we are in the Europa Cup!

I’ll keep Messi as manager until the end of the season - no point firing him how, as we can’t win the ECL this season anymore, so may as well see how he gets on.

He’ll have to really impress me (win the league?) if he wants to keep his 1st managerial job.

The League:

Title Winners!

Yes Yes Yes! Our second title in four years with our highest points total so fare. Good job Messi 👍

Its a pity this challenge is about Europe - as if it was about the league we would be making good progress!
 

Top Players:

Lukaku was the league’s top scorer - as he returned back to our main Target Man upfront.

New signing Gaya was the league’s 5th top assistor from his left full back position.

Then Mbappe + keeper Onana both were in the top 5 for average ratings AND made it into the team of the year.

Our Team:

While most of our players have +7.00 average ratings, this formation doesn’t get the best out of Lukaku and especially Haaland + Mbappe.

The midfield did well - but Deli Alli played MUCH better as an IF instead of this season’s AMC role.

The defence was generally solid - but DR Hateboer + DC Koulibaly both had 2 red cards each.

Poor Barella. The midfielder was sent out on loan. To Moscow. Ouch.

So bye bye Ronaldo. Aged 39, he finally retires. With 6 pace, 7 stamina + an average 5.83 rating - he definitely struggled this season. Farewell!

 
We also might lose our youngest player. Star wonderkid Erling Haaland has sensationally had his transfer request accepted - as he wants first team football. Not good.

Messi. Come on man. You are better than this - right?! 
 

Next

Does Messi keep his job after winning the league? Or is he sacked after the European failure?

Then we have two transfers - one free player + another transfer using our +$200m warchest.

Who should we buy?!

The Manager:

Bye bye Messi. 2 out of 3 objectives would have been enough, but you kept benching Lukaku AND Haaland.

Welcome our new (relatively unknown) manager:

Stolen from managing Milan, Nikolic has the weakest attributes of any manager we considered - BUT he prefers a 442 diamond!

This allows us to play two STs (of Mbappe, Lukaku + Haaland), plus mitigates our weakness of having no other decent wide attackers.

This is a calculated gamble. I’m betting that even with a worse manager, we’ll do better in big (European!) games with our best players on the pitch. Let’s see. 
 

The Squad:

I love these images...

Our squad is ageing - that needs to be addressed, probably from next summer onwards.

Except for that, in a 442 diamond our biggest problem is our AMC. Deli Alli did much better in an IF position out wide, and much worse as an AMC, so we need an upgrade here.

Then our priorities are a backup ST, defensive midfielder, and new center back. We’ll get the backup ST now, and the other two next summer.

Edit - this was a mistake, should have got a center-back (de Ligt) now.

• League - want 2 points / game average (so 75-80 points total) + ECL qualification.
• Europe - want hope that we can win one relatively soon?!

For a challenge about winning 5 ECLs, this is a gamble to get close to winning in Europe again.

How far can we get in the ECL, or will it be the Europa League again?!

Yes. I’d thought about him. He would have been a solid choice. I’m just not sure that I need 3 CBs. Would rather one pushed slightly forward into the DMC position. Which essentially is a 442 diamond.

If this fails, then maybe Nargelsmann is the next experiment.

Full Season Review

Moving to fewer posts per season...
 

The Start:

I was not expecting such a terrible start.

Losing the community shield is fine - but the league form is very worrying.

I am happy to see the 442 diamond giving us both Lukaku + Mbappe (as TM + Poscher respectively) - just as we wanted!
 

Mid-Season:

Jan 1st. 

4th so far?

That’s not good. Is both out of ECL qualification + is less than my 2 pts/game target.

We qualified from our (tough) ECL group with ease. Unbeaten. 

This recent form gives me hope. I won’t fire you just yet Nikovic. But can it continue?

Fixtures:

The good form continued a bit longer... 

This included a Carabao Cup win 🏆  Nikovic’s first (and only?) trophy! 

End-Season:

So where did we end up?

May 31st.

Oh that’s disappointing.

4th. Out of the ECL qualification spots. Our lowest points total so far + less than 1.9 pts/game. Nikovic’s job security doesn’t look good.

... but why? Oh look at that poor league form at the end - 4 defeats in the league’s last 4 weeks. Urgh.

But what is that? An FA Cup win? 🏆 Congrats Nikovic!

Europe:

Oh wow. Do you see that last fixture? We play Real Madrid in the ECL final!

Has my 442 diamond gamble paid off in the big games, or have we just got lucky? More importantly, I’m now nervous...

Squad Stats

Forgot to add this into the post above...

• The 3 Strikers split the goals beautifully - each getting +20 over the season.
• Fati’s 6 goals in 25 games with a <6.8 rating isn’t great
• Both Foden + Alli were disappointing - they contribute to goals, but with poor ratings.
• Hojbjerg was our best midfielder with a 7.3 average rating.
• Our two full-backs were awesome - look how many assists they got (in purple) - although Hateboer got ANOTHER 3 red cards.
• Our central defence needs improving - as Onana conceded 66 in 57 games.
• DC Varane is too old now (only 32) as has deteriorated dramatically. Old man Koulibaly was the only CB to reach a 7 average rating. (Transfer target) De Ligt where are you?!

We have lost our last 2 European finals. We have a new manager you’ve barely heard of. A formation you rarely use.

We need to reach 5 ECL wins for this challenge. We have yet to win 1.

Real Madrid have won this competition many many times. Surely they are favourites ... 
 

Teams

• Both Mbappe + Haaland start up front (though the roles should be switched!)
• Oddly, Lukaku is on the bench!
• Foden starts in central midfield, with Deli Alli in the AMC role. Again, I’d prefer that was switched.
• Note - Captain Henderson was injured during the game (I took this screenshot afterwards)
• Wow. We need a new central defender. Gabriel is rubbish. 

Real Madrid have a lot of creativity, pace, and good full backs who will be in acres of space.

Geek Alert - they’re not playing a DMC, and we’re playing an AMC, so their MRC (Casemiro) should drop deep to man mark Alli, which should leave Foden unmarked in his MLC role. I hope he drives forward as he can be dangerous.

SEASON 06:
Preview + Transfers   

 
This challenge requires 5 ECL wins (Euro Champions League). After 5 seasons, we now have 1 win. Finally.
 

Manager:

Nikolic. Succeeded in 2 out of 3 objectives so (just!) keeps his job.

He played 2 of our star strikers together in his 442 diamond, he WON THE ECL (!), but finished 4th on 71 points. Let’s see if he’s a 1 season European wonder or not.
 

Squad:

Here’s the squad view from last season - adding the two signings (Fati + Foden) plus some new positions highlighted.

It’s a good squad - with our biggest strengths in attack ... Lukaku, Haaland, Mbappe, + Fati.

But - in orange - we need a new CB + DMC now, to replace the ageing Varane + Henderson.

We only have two transfer opportunities, so a younger right back will have to be next year.
