Career Ian goes for a 1kc with Lorenzo Colombo (Season 2)

Hello and welcome to my latest career where I’ll be attempting to hit 1000 goals with Lorenzo Colombo. After finishing my Hagi career (I still have the final round up post to do) I debated what to do next. I then started further testing the Hagi tactic and even started another 1kc split save with a very good German midfielder but that was never really meant as something I’d post. I started thinking that I could try to do a 1kc as it’s a challenge I haven’t completed since the 19 version of the game. I was looking through the player options and noticed young Lorenzo who I’ve used a few times on other saves as a backup player. He was never fantastic on these saves but pretty good and I’d like to think he’d be good enough to be able to reach the target.

So, I had my player but didn’t have a tactic so I set about on some testing to see if I could get something half decent going pretty quickly. I built a mega team at Real Madrid and used Lukaku as our striker to see what I could get out of him. I thought I’d first try something similar to the tactic I used with Moise Kean on the 19 game as I felt it would be great if I could get that working on this version of the game. We played the first few games a few times, I tweaked a few things and it seemed to work pretty good, albeit after only a few games and with one of the best strikers and squad imaginable. Nonetheless I felt there was enough there to give it a go with Lorenzo and that is exactly what I’m going to do.

I decided just to start out at AC Milan, which is a bit boring as I’ve been in Italy a lot recently but I prefer the idea of starting at the club he starts at. Here he is anyway and he looks pretty good with no real weaknesses.

I’m literally going live here too as I’ve only just played out the friendly games, so this could end up being an embarrassing disaster and if it does then I do apologise.

Thank you for reading and I’ll be back with more later once I’ve played on a bit.

Great player choice. I used him in my DT this year alongside Salcedo and he is fantastic. 1kc's are always more about the tactic though. I'm sure you'll get one going and smash this.

Best of luck!

Thank you Rob, it may have been a mistake to going live :D

He started incredibly well with five in our first competitive game.

Things aren’t going great for the team though as of late November. Hopefully we can weather this and keep the job as Colombo is doing okay.

Yikes! That tactic is pretty impenetrable from memory of the classic Moises career.

Haha, great stuff, looking forward to this (except it makes we want to abandon my split 1KC and start a 1KC too). Fantastic start, thinking this will be a big score (if you don't get sacked, which you surely won't)!

It seems to be somewhat ok for the striker but results aren’t quite so good, although it is the first season with the horrible schedule so I don’t want to judge it too soon.

Thank you Scratch, we managed to avoid the sack but it still wasn’t fantastic and subsequently I’m going to make a slight change going into next season.

Season 1

Here we go with the opening season and I’ll start with the transfers.

Transfers

Milan have a good few decent youngsters and I was determined not to go overboard on the transfers so we ended up going largely with what we had with just a few key players coming in;

  • Carrillo - Brought in primarily to mentor Lorenzo to hopefully bring his aerial up a bit.
  • Fabinho - The squad seemed slightly weak in the central midfield area, so he was eventually purchased to hopefully plug that gap and he can also be used at centre back if required.

  • Bernardeschi - I wanted a left winger with good crossing and he seemed like the best option.
  • Spinazzola - He was bought mainly to share the left wing back role with Hernandez but he can play on the right too so a nice player to have.

I ended up with this as our preferred lineup. I wasn’t overly happy with Leão as a winger as he’s more of a forward but I couldn’t see the value in offloading him as he’s not valued too highly at this stage. He’s too good to be a backup to Colombo though so I decided to try and train him up as a winger. I’ve got two BBM’s here too which does make you think they may get forward too much and pinch goals but it doesn’t always pan out that way and I’ll be hoping it doesn’t here. I am a sucker for an AP in the CM line though on this year's game so there is the temptation there to change one of them to that role and perhaps make the AP further forward just an AM, but I’m determined to give this a chance at least.

Team Results

We won nothing and ended up finishing in second place in the league which I was happy with as we’d struggled at times. I suppose we went far in both cup competitions too but it would’ve been nice to have won some silverware, suppose there’s always next year.

Lorenzo Colombo

He started very well indeed and had scored 20 goals in his first 12 games. We were in the Europa League which kind of helped but it was still promising. He couldn’t keep that up though and ended up with a return of 38 goals in 39 games, which was a bit frustrating given how well he’d started.

Injuries

Just an in-game injury that kept him out for a couple of games and a little injury towards the end of April. Apart from that he missed a good few games due to tiredness as the schedule was too much for him.

Final Thoughts

A slightly frustrating season in truth but I suppose Lorenzo has shown enough to suggest he’s got what it takes and hopefully things can only get better for the team as well. I think I’ll be looking to make that slight change to the tactic that I mentioned further up as I think it may help us at least in terms of team results, so I’ll need to do a bit of work in the transfer market as our central midfielders aren’t playmaker types.

That's a decent start. Easy to see how you're a bit frustrated though after the start he made. Glad you ended up keeping your job, not that it was in any doubt and finished strong in the end.

I very rarely use BBM's, especially during these types of challenges. Hopefully they don't poach too many goals from Lorenzo.

I tend to steer clear of Bernadeschi too. I have signed him so many times and he's ended up very injury prone and even when he's been fit his returns have been slightly disappointing. Hopefully that won't be the case for you.

I predict Colombo's goals will pick up next season. He looks brilliant already.

Love the choice of player, he’s always someone I’ve looked at but never gone for. That’s a solid first season as well, as the team improves now he should start banging the goals in 🤞🏻

Thank you Dai, I’ve not really done much with proper winger types for a while and I’ve often done stuff where I’ve tried to stop the wide players crossing so I’m very much going into things a bit blind there. Bernardeschi had decent crossing and I was hoping he’d be good for a couple of years while I try to train a youngster up to take over. He’s done ok so far I guess.

Thanks Rich, I’ve used him as a backup striker on a few saves this year and he’s always been steady so he was the first player I thought of for this. Hopefully he’ll do alright.

Thank you Rob, I was just happy to get through it in the end. I’m hoping he’s going to be somewhat okay for injuries. I should really know I guess having used him, I think he was okay but he was only ever a backup player so difficult to gauge anything from that really. We’ll see I guess.

Season 2

We had a bit of a mixed opening season where the team weren’t overly great but at least Lorenzo showed some promise. Let’s see how season two went.

Transfers

I’m trying to be somewhat methodical when it comes to the transfers so we don’t waste too much money and end up in a pickle. The idea is that I’ll think very carefully about every transfer and try not to make many unnecessary signings. I’m generally bringing all of the graduates through on this save as I’ve found on other saves that you can often raise a good bit of funds selling off the lesser ones after a year or two and sometimes some of them end up turning out better than expected.

The main signings were;

  • Goretzka - Just a brilliant midfielder and a decent age so not much thought went into this one.
  • Merino - Another nice midfielder who I eventually decided to go for. I’m not totally sold on him but for £41m I felt he was a good option as he’s usually pretty steady if not fantastic.
  • Chukwueze - A decent young left winger to train up. I believe I used him at Villarreal on my Hagi save so tried and tested to some degree.

The outgoings were;

  • Kjær - I felt he could go as I was planning on moving Fabinho into the centre back rotation with the two new midfielders arriving.
  • Castillejo - He was decent on the left wing last season but I wanted someone slightly younger to replace him and Chuck was the chosen player.
  • Pobega - The big offer came in that I felt I couldn’t refuse as he’s not that great.
  • The rest were deadwood leaving and youngsters going out on loan.

Team Results

A slightly better season this year in winning the league, Italian Cup and the Champions League, albeit we weren’t fantastic in the league and I’d put us down as being pretty lucky to win both of the cups as there were a few close ties throughout. Winning the CL meant we’d qualified for the Club World Cup, which caught me on the hop as I forgot it was this year. Anyway, we had a few decent wins in that before Dortmund knocked us out in the semi.

Fixtures

A nice start with some good returns from Lorenzo but a poor spell in early December and slightly too many blank performances for my liking. The squad is still pretty young though and I’m kind of hoping things gradually improve as we move forward.

Lorenzo Colombo

Just the one injury this season which came in the middle of April and subsequently meant he’d miss practically the whole of the run-in. He wasn’t actually available until the Champions League final which was much longer than the predicted one month and slightly annoying.

He ended up with 59 goals in 42 games which I guess is a good improvement on last season but he is a year older and had the Club World Cup games to aid him. I made a mistake with the tactic and didn’t notice until a few games into this season. Basically I had the free kicks outside the box set to short instead of the intended shoot, it was annoying but to be honest I’m not sure it would’ve made much difference. The fact he’s our top scorer and the two behind him are our only other two strikers gives me some confidence as there doesn’t appear to be any issues in terms of the percentage of goals going to the striker position.

I think that might be it for his aerial so I think I’ll switch my focus on getting his movement and physicals up a bit more if possible. Other than that, I guess it’s onwards and upwards.

Nice start, decent improvement this season and likely another jump next season (even taking the CWC into account). Onwards and upwards from here!

Um... What? Editing my tactic right now... I've never changed that, didn't even realise it was there (only ever used it for corners!).

Haha, totally! 🤣

Actually, I've never been that strong tactically, I just try stuff until I find something that works! But my ultimate secret is: "build a team so strong they could win 6-0 with any tactic". And actually I am mostly a n00b with the set pieces stuff, only dug into corners (and only attacking not defending them either).

I suppose it’s an easy mistake to make as at a glance short and shoot isn’t all that different. I’m not convinced going the shoot way makes much difference to be honest.

Season 3

On we go.

Transfers

We’re just trying to gradually get things sorted for the future, so there were just a few key signings and a load of graduates.

The main transfers were;

  • Bastoni - A big offer came in for Fabinho, which I accepted and brought Bastoni in as his replacement. We now have four Italians as our centre back options and all relatively young so hopefully we’re sorted there for a few years.
  • Szoboszai - I couldn’t resist the great Hungarian youngster but it’s just deciding where to play him as he’s so versatile.
  • Dest - Brought in to be our first choice right wing back. He replaced the outgoing Conti in the two man rotation with Calabria.
  • Tonali - I brought him in as a freebie and I was debating whether to use him or just sell him straight on for a profit. It was the latter as I wasn’t totally sold on him and £30m seemed like a decent fee.
  • Olmo - A quality playmaker.

It was much better in the league this year as there weren’t as many dropped points and we scored more goals. We won the third place playoff game in the Club World Cup, beat Monaco in the European Super Cup and then it was very much a Milan thing when it comes to the other cup competitions. We beat Inter in the Super Cup on penalties, narrowly lost out to them in the Italian Cup semi over two legs and then beat them in the Champions League final.

Lorenzo Colombo

He started the season like a house on fire and at this point I thought we’d nailed it.

Just one injury this year and not a bad one but it was a struggle at times with the heavy schedule due to the winter World Cup.

It was 70 goals in 49 games for Lorenzo this year which I’m happy enough with all things considered. I mean, there is frustration there as he failed to continue on his early season form and his return ended up not being much different to that of last year considering the games played. On the other hand, it was the winter World Cup year and the schedule was pretty tough for him as he’s still pretty young.

I’m not sure there’s much more improvement left in him but he’s just had a welcome boost to his physicals in the off season. I’d be pretty happy if we could just get those and his movement up a bit more.

Score

Lorenzo Colombo

Season 1: 38 goals in 39 games

Season 2: 59 goals in 42 games

Season 3: 70 goals in 49 games

Grand Total: 167 goals in 130 games

Season 4

Just a brief update here as I’m not sure I’ll be continuing. I got the team ready with some new signings and was pretty happy with the squad going into the new season. Things just didn’t go so well as we just couldn’t seem to score as many goals and it’s frustrated me.

The team won everything except the Champions League where Man U knocked us out in the quarter final. A lot of dropped points in the league though and our goal output fell down to similar to the first two seasons.

Colombo just wasn’t as good either with just 64 goals in 50 games. I suppose he still has a chance of making the 1kc but it’s just not what is expected on here, so I’m not sure whether I’m going to continue or not. Apologies for wasting all of your time if I don’t continue on but it’s not something I’ve done too often in fairness. We’ll see though as I may pick it up again but can’t say I want to do much testing at this stage and it’s looking like I’ll need to as this tactic clearly isn’t happening.

Season 3

On we go.

Transfers

We’re just trying to gradually get things sorted for the future, so there were just a few key signings and a load of graduates.

The main transfers were;

Thank you for reading.

Dont be too disheartened dude. Ive been trying to get a propper goal scoring tactic going all frickin year and when you think you have done it. It falls apart.

Keep going though mate as it could just be a blip season. 👍

Yeah, I just can’t get it quite right for some reason. I think I’ll go for one more season but with the original system from season one and take it from there.

That’s a good couple of seasons Ian, he’s getting to an age now where he should get more consistent and hopefully it means more goals, keep it at it 😁

Thank you Rich, I am continuing on even if he doesn’t hit any great heights. He should surely get a little better than this during his peak years which should give him a chance of hitting the 1kc at least. Well that’s the hope anyway 😂
