Help Buying players

How are you supposed to buy players, whenever I try to buy anybody the amount the other teams want shoots up ridiculously compared to the value, I haven't been able to sign anybody yet, but when I sell I always have to sell lower than the value. A player valued at 2m I couldn't sign for less than 37m

I've found other teams' valuation of their players much higher than in previous seasons. I have noticed that using the 'Enquiry' function when making an offer does reduce the asking price quite significatly sometimes, as opposed to just making an offer straight away. In some cases as well, if you're rejected outright by the selling club, the player will become upset and if you make an offer again, the asking price can be lower.

They always ask for quite a lot more (unless the player is transfer listed), but there is a way to get them down to their absolute minimum. I'll stick it in spoilers as while most people I've talked to about think it's fine, some think it's borderline cheating.

Spoiler

To get the absolute minimum price from the selling team, do the following:

  • Drop the price down to about half what the player is worth and then make sure the Sell On Fee is at 0% (if it won't go down, you might need to go up first, not sure why).
  • Then press Close to close the negotiation screen.
  • Open it again. The Sell On Fee will be back to whatever they asked to - change it to 50% and submit the offer.
  • Whatever they come back with is their absolute minimum (it will still be more than the player is worth, but will be less than what they otherwise ask).
  • In most cases you can set the sell on fee back to 0%, close the screen, open it again, put it back down to 0% and submit the offer (leaving price as the absolute minimum) and they will accept it. Sometimes you have to leave some of the sell on % on.

Another useful thing to know when you are just starting to build a team is that you can normally get them for 66% of their absolute minimum if you set the sell clause to 50%. That does mean you lose half the profit when you eventually sell them, but means you get get a stronger squad in the first season, which it often worth it.

This is interesting. Do you consider

Spoiler

Agreeing a transfer after the window for a player whose contract is expiring, then cancelling the transfer on Jan 1st so you can offer contract for a free transfer

to be cheating? I don't tend to do it if I'm going LWTTT because it doesn't work with domestic players, but if I'm a struggling team in a high division, it can be the difference between strengthening in a couple of positions each close season, or trundling along with the same lower quality players for a long time

Haha, I never even thought of that!

Basically with this sort of stuff, it's all in a grey area where maybe it's fine because the game let's you do it, or maybe it's not because it's not very realistic. If it's just a save for your own entertainment, then it's up to you to decide where the line is for you. Sometimes I like to push the game for all it's worth, other times I like to play more realistically.

If you're doing a challenge and competing for a leaderboard, then it's really a matter for the challenge maker to decide. I have asked about the stuff I mentioned above in the past and the feedback has been that it's allowable - generally if the game lets you do it it's allowed.

That said there are some things which are clearly crossing the line. Like the transfer thing where you can sell players for massive amounts (don't ask if you don't know, that's one thing I won't share).

I make sure not to try to hide the fact that I'm using the techniques I mentioned above. It's obviously not cool to try to trick people and misrepresent how you got the results you did. Ultimately we are a community and there needs to be a level of trust. If people see you getting amazing results, but they can't see how it's possible, they are likely to doubt whether you're genuine (and fair enough).

I am getting some pretty amazing results right now, but I've always been open about what I do. Eg: I use the transfer tricks to get the best players I can; I don't use my scouting app on a save BUT I have seen way too much that I can't forget (which is why I don't go for long term leaderboards anymore); I'm using a pretty good tactic that I've built toward over a few years (most of the experimentation being public); I'm using a nifty corner tactic that's worth +50 goals, etc. So people can turn around and say "Scratch has an unfair advantage", but they can't say "Scratch us trying to trick us" - that's pretty important to me.

Err, I feel like I've gone on a bit - I guess this is just an important topic to me, for the very reason outlined in my previous point! Sorry. :D
