We need to understand the formation you use first. Here, what I'll say is assuming you used a Left Inside Forward. Correct me if I'm wrong. 

One of main concern should be left winger - how come Saborit is the main player there? He is left footed winger, so he won't play to the best of his abilities as a left IF. 

None of your player are natural left winger except Hlozek, which Ig played more as striker? 

- Cornick is more right winger

- Eder is more AMC

- Duffy is too lacking probs. 

So maybe get one natural right footed AML to be main left winger - so Saborit can be your main WBL as that is also your weak point, with Smolcic is a more DC than DL. That will give domino effect as Smolcic can be backup DC. 

With limited budget, I'd suggest Blackpool's Keshi Anderson or Montevideo's Marcelo Allende?

And here's some relatively cheap (<1M value, <3k wage) GK that can be your back up GK.

You are absolutely correct in your analysis @Ariza8. The tactic I’ve setup is a simple 4231 with two IFs and a TM.

As DoF, the squad I’ve built is full of right footed IFs who can play on that left side (Hlozek, Cornick, Eder, and if needed Duffy) … PLUS two left wing backs who can also play AML if needed as backup (Saborit + loaned-out-Brown).

So why is Saborit our starting AML ?!

• As I’m holidaying the games, our assistant manager is picking the team + tactics! 
• He keeps picking Saborit as our AML, with Hlozek or Cornick as our AMR - even though Saborit should be 4th choice for the position.

• Also, when you holiday games, I don’t know for sure if the Assistant Manager keeps your player roles, or picks his own.

 
Overall - I don’t know why the AssMan picks Saborit as AML, and I’m not sure what role the AssMan plays Saborit as.

What I can do is:

• Sell Saborit - so the AssMan has no choice.
• Plus sell Brown also - for the same reason 🙂

Mid-Season 01

It’s the end of January. Surely we have “won the transfer window” 😃 Unexpectedly, we had a massive transfer war-chest, but very little in the wage budget. So we had to get ruthless …

Players Out.  
The good news started by selling players - including a surprise sale for a huge £11m.

Spoiler

Selling midfielder Mohamed for £11m was a surprise as he only cost us £0.9m, was out on loan for a half-season. That’s a +£10m profit!

Then we’d already decided to sell left wing backs Saborit + Brown, but I didn’t realize how much their value had risen! Both were bought for <£1m!

So selling (releasing with the editor) then both for half-price gives us (7.5 + 6) / 2 = another £6.75m

Lastly to save wages, we loaned out poor performing DC Helik …

… and (released with editor) sold three backup players / mentors (ST Smith, AM McGinn, + 3rd choice GK Woods).

However we did sign some contract extensions (e.g. GK Siegrist) - which puts more pressure on wages.

So we now have a transfer warchest of £18.4m + available wage budget of +£22k/wk … !

Players In !!!
Based on fan feedback, we wanted a new first choice DL, a solid DC, a backup DR + maybe a backup IF/ST upfront …

I really wanted this wonderkid, but his value + wages are just too expensive …

… so instead we decided to upgrade to Nigeria’s first choice left-back - welcome 24 year old Sanusi 🙂  

DC:
Nott’m Forest are struggling - so we helped ourselves to one of their best DCs, whose value plummeted due to poor form - welcome McKenna!

DR: 
Finally we got our backup DR for his £1.6m release fee - welcome Carriere!

<Though we sent him back out on loan asap as I couldn’t afford his wages anymore!>

IF/ST: 
This wonderkid was new to me + looks fantastic. Cheap too! Can he be a good backup to Sesko + Hlozek!

Bonus!
Plus one more wonderkid attacker was still available - but no-one wants to loan him + I doubt he’ll get games! A mistake?

 
 

So with 5 new signings, but no better backup GK … how are we doing?

Performances 
We’ll I didn’t realize one new signing would be at the African Cup of Nations, so that was an unpleasant surprise 

Plus we had a short-term injury crisis in defence …

Nice work, I reckon they'll gel from March onwards and fly through the end of the league season with a late push for automatic promotion. I think its better to have 1 more attacking option than just 2 per position so I think you have it right 👍

Its early May. Today we either get fired, or this career save continues. It all comes down to the last game in the league …

Then slowly rose to 6th 👍 with one game left …

That game is against 7th placed QPR. You may think a draw would be enough, but no, that could allow 8th placed West Brom to overtake us. 

We need to win.

After a few months ravaged by injuries + inconsistent form, we are left with one final game … at this point I’m genuinely nervous … we need to win …

Yeah, well if it's for summer Market it would change a lot of things, especially if you got promoted. The players you need will differ so much quality-wise, it's possible that the player you have now wont be enough.

I think the same - it seems the players will get injured often if you holiday-ing a lot. I tried use holiday mode a lot as I create a new safe, and some scary injury happened - at some point as much as 7 injuries happened at the same time. The ass. manager in charge also do some stupid transfer without my consent - and for some reason they won't play Lucca at all - even though I used Pisa (his original team) and Milan in another save(bought him before holidaying). The result keep getting worse, he bought bad player and at April, we got as low as 13th place and I was sacked 😂

You are absolutely right. So I turned on “do not buy players” when holidaying. That helps. Also when using the editor, I can always reverse any stupid AI transfer.

Also I’ve learnt a lot from my simulation “Chairman’s Challenge” career(s) + @Titjes Draft games - so can better guess which players the AI will start (based on CA + position familiarity) - which I why I knew January signing wonderkid Angelo wasn’t go to start many (any?!) games. But still get it wrong sometimes (e.g. Saborit as a left IF?!).

This makes me feel it’s more realistic as a DoF role, as the manager isn’t always going to play who you want - so you have to ‘massage’ the squad so you’re both aligned / picking the same players 👍

We are wearing our best suit. We’ve conducted the press conference in our heads. Our squad are essentially fully fit, with no injuries!

We got slaughtered 3-1 in both legs. Did you see how many clear-cut-chances they had?!

Our promotion dreams. Gone. Over.

Wonderkids Hlozek, Sesko, and … er … the rest … will still be in the Championship next season. They’ll be happy with that … right … RIGHT?! 😧

Well after only scoring 15 each in the league this season (Mitrovic scored 37 !!!) - maybe Hlozek + Sesko need another season in this division before they are ready for the Premier League …

… at least, that’s what I’ll tell their agents!

Pre-Season 2 (part A)

Now we prepare for a 2nd season in the English Championship. As the club's Director of Football (DoF), lets go through our squad + identify what player ins/outs are needed...
 

GK:
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ (3 out of 5)

We only have 2 keepers at the club - after releasing our 3rd choice keeper in January (so save on his meagre wages). With question marks over the remaining two GKs, do we need to reinforce?

30 year old Siegrist was undisputedly our 1st choice keeper this season + earnt himself a contract extension. He has decent attributes + performed decently well ✅ But he won't improve further 🔻

Backup
Backup keeper Johansen has decent attributes - but performed poorly in his 7 games last season 🔻 (6.57 average rating, 1.1 points/game). His contract expires in the mid-season, should we extend it?

Next?
So ideally we'd bring in a new 1st choice keeper, with Siegrist becoming our backup, but the question is when + who.

We can wait until the middle (or even the end) of this season, it all depends on getting in the right keeper. Suggestions welcomed!
 

DC:
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐  (4 out of 5 - due to great depth)

With SIX center-backs, there is plenty of decent quality + depth. Perhaps there is too much depth? You'll remember Pablo's performances and Helik's horribleness, so how did they finish the season?

30 year old Pablo was our best performing DC  ✅ - however he is aging 🔻 his attributes are declining due to injuries 🔻 and he is slightly injury prone, being injured for 4 months of last season 🔻

... should he stay or should he go?!

Problem
We need to make a decision about poor performing Helik. After his horrible 1st half-season, he went out on loan for the 2nd half-season. His contract expires at the end-season, so we need to make a decision - extend his contract or sell him?

The Others
The remaining four DCs are all of solid quality. The two Croatian youngsters can still further improve + we'd hope January signing McKenna's form will improve after a poor start with us.

Lastly, we'll probably send out young Sykes on loan to continue his impressive development into a solid center-back. 

Next?
Either could bring in 5-10m as I'd assume we can find a buyer, so do we sell Pablo or Helik? 🤔
 

FB:
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐  (3 out of 5 - due to great depth)

After our two January reinforcements, you may think these positions should have a higher rating with our 4 full-backs. Especially as we have a 5th option - with Croatian youngster Smolcic playing anywhere across the back four. However all is not as it seems ...

Spanish DR Rosas is easily the best of the bunch. He had the highest average rating of any player last season. Surely the bigger clubs will start to show their interest in him - how long can we keep him for?! Backup DR Carreira is back from loan.

Problem
Left back has been a problem position from the start. While ex-Man Utd's Fernandez should own the position in the future after another (half?) season on loan - in January we bought Nigerian first choice DL Sanusi + he's been a big disappointment. With only a 6.83 average rating + just 2 assists in 18 games, we expect better.

Next?
Probably - we wait - hopefully DL Sanusi improves. If not, then our Croatian DRLC will take that position. Otherwise we'll be waiting for Fernandez to take over as our left-back. Lets see.

It’s a good suggestion + one I’d decided not to do. In real life, a DoF could not ‘remove’ a player’s positional familiarity, so  I decided not to do it here. Nice idea though.

I setup a 4231 formation, and I’m pretty sure the Assistant Manager also uses a 4231 - due to the players he selects in each game. May switch to a 41221 soon.

However I have no idea what tactics (player roles? mentality? pressing? passing?) the Assistant Manager uses when I holiday - does he use mine, or his own … ?! I don’t know.

Pre-Season 2 (part B)

Here is the 2nd part of our squad - as we enter our 2nd season in the Championship!

MC:
Rating:  ⭐⭐⭐ (3 out of 5)

We have a mixed bag in midfield. It’s a young, decent ability group - but it lacks depth + lacks potential to improve.

Israeli defensive midfielder Glazer is probably our best midfielder - whose mental attributes has developed well.

Potential: 
Otherwise we are looking for American 20 year old Johnny to ‘kick on’ - as he’s the only one who has the higher potential to significantly improve.

Others:
In a group of only 6 fairly young midfielders - McCorie, Ferguson + Savarino are all decent squad players. However 2 star Mandroiu is only a backup.

Next?
An extra midfielder or two would help.

• Ideally a Premier League standard / great player - if we can afford them?!
• Otherwise a solid, cheap midfielder would be useful as backup / rotation. 
   

  
IF/ST:
Rating:  ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 out of 5)

Our strongest + most exciting area of the squad. But are they scoring enough + do we have too many wonderkids?!

Our front three of wonderkids Sesko, Hlozek + Leonardo are a future powerhouse ✅ 

But why did the first two only score 15 goals each in the league? That’s pretty poor + we expect more this 2nd season. IF we can keep them at the club?!

Others:

• 27 year old Cornick is a good rotation option as an IF/ST, behind our wonderkid front three.
• Left-footed midfielder Savarino can also play at AMR, giving another good rotation option.
• While backup wide man Duffy was ok on-loan to Dundee last season, but is worse than his 2.5 stars coach report suggests. Sellable.
• The bottom three high-potentials should all go out on-loan, as they’ll not get enough games with us just yet

Next:
Bye bye Elderly Eder - he’ll be let go - as he’s declining quickly + we’d like to free up his wages.

We could buy another cheap rotation IF/ST - and then sell backup Duffy - but that’s not a priority.

The priority is (a) finding good loans for our younger wonderkids, and (b) keeping the big clubs away from our front three! 
 

  
Summary: 
So I think our priorities (in order) are:

1. Sell a DC 🚫 either Pablo or Helik.
2. Buy a new MC ➡️ urgent
3. Buy a new GK ➡️ not urgent 

… but how much budget do we have available?!

 
Budgets:
Reaching the playoffs, we are given an extra £10m in transfers or £50k/wk wages. We’ll pick the extra wages! 😁

After extending a few contracts + selling (releasing) our elderly guys … we have a transfer budget of just £3.5m + £28k/wk wages.

 
The good news is that if we sell DCs Pablo or Helik, then it’s a £10-13m + £33-35k/wk wage budget. BUT is that enough for a new GK + new MC ?!

Here's some suggestion, I'd give some DMC/MC/AMC that's valued at <10M.

Do you look for some experienced players that ready for action, but still have good 3-5 years on tank? A bit high on wage though... 

Or some with experience but lower wage... Why not welcome my old suggestion :

Or other guys that is low wage but still quite good. 

Or let's aim for younger players with some potential to improve.

- He is relatively cheap and easy to get. In some of my saves, he won't play a lot in first season thus unsettled at Anderlecht - one time I even find him transfer listed 😅

- good starting stats (that screenshot is from start of season 2, his main stats already 14)

- good potential to improve, even if he isn't the best (after I got @Scratch'S AM22, found out his PA is around 140-150) 

- He always play above average for me, decent Goal/assists output even if I mainly play using winger and TF

Here's him in my current save, start of 5th season. He is maxed but quite decent I'd say 😉

Step 1 / Removed:

•  🚫 Torre - future transfer agreed with Barcelona, for realism purposes I don’t want to edit that away.
• 🚫 Grugic - on £35k/wk wages, so I can’t afford him!
• 🚫 Verschaeren - bought by Sours, worth £22.5m, so I can’t afford him!

•  🔻 Gragera - poor movement (7), so less suitable as a MC.
• 🔻 Brannigan - bought by Cardiff, for realism purposes don’t want to buy from Swansea’s main rivals!
• 🔻 Shepelev - ‘temperamental’ personality, which I’m trying to avoid. 
   

Step 2 / The Shortlist

Five players remain 👍 

• AMC Quintero seems to be the best - but also the oldest + most expensive 🤔 let’s see if I can afford him.
• MC Mannsverk looks good - young, cheap, will get better 👍 will definitely buy ✅

MC Mannsverk is a good all-rounder + one of the best defensively. Useful.

Well too bad for Verschaeren - for once a club realize his quality and buy him 😁 as you can see, that's how much he grew in 1 season - and he is capped by Belgium already - not u21, but senior NT. That's how good he is. Relatively fast to get good is a bonus.

If you buy Mannsverk that will leave quite a sum in your fund - potentially you can get better GK with that. Let's see if I can find some...

After quick search, at the start of 2nd season here's some young, good GK valued at £5-10m. At these range there are LOTS of good GKs - here's some. 

One of the best young GK in game for sure. And lots of people use him...

Maybe if you want some different ones - here's some relatively young but solid GK. 

And lastly, this guy didn't seem much at this point - but in my current save he developed nicely to be my 2nd GK as reserve for Joan Garcia.

And my main GK with £2m clause at the start of game - too bad he won't appear if you don't load Spain.

Agreed the 41221 should be better. I tried it once on this 2nd season + was fired by Christmas - no screenshots so can’t see more statistically how it performed. Will try it again - as it would have been our formation in the EPL if we were promoted!

Good shout on the AssMan. I’ve currently got a silver Leon Brittan - mainly because he’s ex-Swansea + I’ve been overly loyal.

Unfortunately I chose not to do monthly player talks - I consider that to be the manager (not DoF) role, so for realism purposes I decided to not do it 😞

This is our new AssMan - the ONLY guy whose gold, natural + “interested” (staff interest is a requirement for me for this save) … plus likes a 41221 🙂

@Ariza8 - your recommendation is simple but feels absolutely right…

This is our new AssMan - the ONLY guy whose gold, natural + “interested” (staff interest is a requirement for me for this save) … plus likes a 41221 🙂 

He is awesome - I love him already 

Hopefully that will help. 

As for talking, I believe not only director, but some of the club owner will talk with the players on some occasion - for example at Milan, Maldini (the director) talk with players lots of times - and the new owner also talk with players some times. So I think it's not out of realism - maybe not every month, but I think talking once every 2/3 months, or when the club is in hard place - is reasonable.
