After so many ticks and  twicks, I've succeeded to create an awesome Tactics that worked for my Crystal Palace save in my second season

 

Prep talk is also important as it affects the morale of players

Hi @PrinceMadu - a couple of questions for you:

1. can you share why you think this tactic is “awesome” please?
2. is this ‘plug + play’, or do you recommend specific changes towards the end of a match or vs specific opposition. formations?
3. how do you usually score / create chances? Is it mostly set pieces + long shots?

Why? I am struggling to find anything ‘special’ / great / awesome about it. It’s looks like a solid, average, slightly defensive tactic. If you added some recommended tweaks - then I’d likely give it a max 3 out of 5.

To me, it looks like it will perform (not out-perform) at your player’s ability levels. Weak squad = weak performance. Average squad = average performance. Not an ‘awesome’ tactic which would (even slightly) outperform your squad’s ability.

Would be interesting to get your feedback as maybe I’m missing something 🙂

Played 10 league games with Crystal Palace’s starting squad on season 1 - play and play style with no tactical tweaks mid-game - with a heal + morale boost (using the editor) before each game …

Note - I didn’t setup set pieces, so everything there is default. 
 

Strengths ✅ 

• Possession = I love the back 5, with 2 DCs, 2 IWBs drifting either side of a DMC. Very suitable for your slow, short, central passing game. So you should get ~60% possession in most games with this, even with a weaker squad.

• B2Bs when attacking = they should be your main creators, and should see A LOT of the ball as they move forward in front of the DMC + 2IWBs. I guess they’ll have a lot of shots. Need B2Bs with good shooting attributes?! 😄

   

Concerns ⚠️ 

• Narrow defense - narrow width with 2 IWBs … You’re inviting them to attack down the wings (which is fine). So you’ll concede a lot of crosses / corners to opposition sides who play with wide attackers (41221, 4231 DM, 343 DM) - which is most of the EPL teams. Need defenders with high aerial + strength to head away those crosses + corners!   
   

• High Line - high defensive line, 2 BPDs, uses offside trap … you’re inviting the opposition to play direct / long balls behind your defense. Need defenders with high pace!

• High Press - you’re playing a high line, ‘all over’ press, but only have three players in the AM/F positions, so it’s not going to be effective against any opposition with a DMC. Better with a mid-line / mid-press?

• B2Bs Defensively - they will get caught out. You’re asking them to get back when defending (that’s a B2B role), but also to press high up. So they’ll move to close down an opposition DMC / DC, and leave their MC unmarked. That’s a problem when their MC can make one through ball behind your high line!

• Chance Creation - how do you expect to score goals? I assume most are from set pieces and long shots. Certainly I didn’t see many chances nor goals 😞 

 
Suggestions ⬆️ 

Edited in - here are a few minor suggestions to make this tactic slightly more defensively solid / balanced…

Player roles:

• DCs - change both to normal DCs. Why? With a weak team, you don’t need BPDs as they’ll get caught on the ball, because you’re asking the whole team to play short passes AND they have good simple passing options to the IWBs / DMC. Normal DCs are more suitable. 
• DMC - change to an DM, Anchor or maybe a DLP. Why? Right now with high pressing, your BWM is running out to close down MCs, leaving opposition AMCs free in dangerous space. Better to have a DMC who is more positionally cautious.
• AMR/L - maybe change one to an IW. Why? Then you have two slightly different roles from your wide attackers - two different sets of movement.

Pressing:

• Medium defensive line - Why? So you don’t concede to balls behind your high line.
• Medium (own half) pressing - Why? Your 3 attackers will struggle to close down any opposition with 5 or more defenders + DMCs (e.g. 41221, 4231 DM, 343 DM, 5122).
• Deactivate ‘offside trap - not needed with a mid-line + mid-press.

Hopefully these are minor tweaks which don’t change the overall style of what the original poster wanted (except for the move to a mid-press)!

Actually I’m hoping that I’m wrong and the original poster is right.

Perhaps he / she makes some in-game tweaks for the 2nd half, or has got specific attribute requirements for certain positions, or maybe he / she wishes they’d labeled it as a ‘solid’ tactic (which would be true), etc … or maybe their squad in season 3 is much better and they’re performing better as a result?!

They obviously posted this for a reason. Am keen to figure out what it is 🙂

There's no need to test it - right?

You have already successfully tested it in a couple of different saves. If you switch to 'extended highlights' for a few games - you'd be able to tell us how it performs & how to tweak it - I'd love to see your analysis if you do choose to do that 🙂
