Tactics The Fat Controller 5-2-3

It’s been some time since I posted a tactic of my own, because for the most part I have been messing around with Man City and challenges which don’t really lend themselves to creating a long term usable tactic. That’s lead me to Newcastle, and the third season of a save where I’ve had the same basic principle in mind, to create a tactic that controls and manages the game, if not necessarily the possession. I’ve toyed with many combinations of this over the course of my first two seasons, finally settling on this shape and instructions in the final 10 games or so of season two. Season three has been played without making any changes to the formation or instructions, and I’ve already surpassed my achievements in the league in far fewer games.

The tactic:

Now, clearly I’ve done a lot of work in the transfer market, and the team now is much stronger than Newcastle’s starting squad. That said, I feel like I’ve been pretty shrewd in the transfer market, and bought players specifically to fit around this style, and not overpaid when there was the potential to (my two largest transfer fees were En Nesyri at £40m and Porro at £41m, and these were offset by selling Dybala for £45m and Dumfries for £33.5m).

I also don’t think I have the strongest team in the PL or CL in terms of talent, but I think the suitability for the tactic and results speak for themselves.

Full instructions are below, added from my phone. I will return to make some updates and answer any questions when I get some more time.

do you change the mentality to attacking when in need of goal?

I will on occasion. To be honest, with the defensive record, and the fact that I usually tend to score early and first, I'm more likely to get the opening by making subs or swapping players within the formation, rather than changing mentality

Nice! And very happy to see Newcastle winning the league. That said, I do have to point out that's not a 5 3 2, it's a 5 2 3. 😀

👀

Not sure how I managed to mess that up, the 3 strikers were the starting point for the whole tactic

Lol, I was looking at title and the formation for way too long, back and forth, thinking I must have gotten it wrong! 🤣

I keep it on at all times, yeah. When I say control the game, maybe control is the wrong word, maybe manage or stifle are more accurate.

You said if cannot score overload + direct passing. This means all attackers need areal 15+?

P.s and turning off waste time when overload yes? You test tactic without wasting time?maybe its effective

Aerial will depend entirely on your level. I am currently working on Impossible Challenge, and am in VNL, I do find my more effective attackers are those with higher Aerial, but in my Newcastle save, I had success with players who weren't blessed with great aerial too.

When chasing a game, yes, I remove time wasting. I have tested without time wasting in general, and it doesn't improve my ability to score goals, and I seem to concede more goals. The tactic is mostly about stifling the opposition, and being clinical when we do get chances to go forward, I don't think this tactic lends itself to domination and scoring a large amount of goals

I think this is a good tactic for your journey, at least for the beginning. It seems to perform better than the standard of the players should allow. Below is my journey with Hungerford so far.

This is where I took over the team. 24th in VNS 5 points off safety, 3 wins out of 20, twice as many GA as GF

This is where I ended the season, 16 wins from the 26 games I took charge of, finally into a positive GD, and in the playoff positions.

End of second season. Won the league, albeit on goal difference, less than 1 GPG conceded, and twice as many GF as GA. My first trophy in the bag, and I've rejected offers from VNL clubs in the hopes of clinching that league title and the FA trophy in season number three.
