Lower League 4-4-2 Diamond Wingbacks

This tactic has so far got Kidderminster Harriers from National League North to League One in successive seasons:

National League North: 1st

National League: 2nd - won playoffs

League Two: 1st

This is generally plug and play, but I do occasionally change Team Mentality between Counter, Attacking or Overload depending on how a game is going. I turn Time Wasting on in the last 15 minutes of tight games when the team is winning.

These free signings are good enough to be with you from National League North/South through till League One and many will sell for big transfer fees along the way:

GK: Joel Coleman

Wingbacks: Cole Dasilva, Jude Russell (retrain position to WB), Mungo Bridge (retrain position to WB)

CBs: Rhys Bennett, Lars Dendoncker

DMs: Luke Dreher

CMs: Gomez-Mancini, Callum Hulme

AMs: Dion McGhee

Strikers: Michael Folivi, Virgil Gomis, Enock Asante

Thanks. Loving this tactic. Won the national with Buxton in first season by some margin and currently sitting top of the national. Also signed many of your recommended players. What do you tend to do tactics wise when you come up against a team from a much higher league in the cup?

Glad you saw success with these tactics and signings as well. For higher league cup matches I usually set up the same but start the game on counter attacking, tell the team to relax and more often than not, accept defeat! But have seen some cup success keeping to this tactic throughout.

Is it on clean state or not ?

Clean slate doesn’t affect anything. Select it or don’t select it just follow my screenshots and it’ll work.

Great tactic, really enjoying it (im top of the league and unbeaten as Wrexham).

One question though, did you have a really low possession rating? Im averaging 30-35% possession. And also, im not scoring that many goals (Im 5th in the league for goals scored).

Glad to hear it’s working well for you!

I’ve got to be honest, I don’t look at possession stats too much as long as I’m winning games.

Generally, my team scored lots with this tactic, but again this isn’t something I have been massively hot on. As I’ve been winning, I haven’t paid it too much attention.

Depending on the profile of your strikers try tweaking them to one Target Forward and one Poacher as this has worked for me with this tactic too.

I've used this tactic for 3 full seasons now and its worked almost perfectly. I took over Concord Rangers in the National league south and this is how it's gone in 3 seasons (ignore the first season I was using a different tactic and rubbish players):

The recent league 2 season was a playoff win after being in the automatic promotion places for most of the season. Just to add some notes on how the tactic has worked for me:

- The wingbacks are a great outlet for width in attack but because they have to work so hard going forward and defending from deep, prepare yourself by having 2 good wingbacks for each side as you will be subbing them off quite alot with the huge work rate they have to deal with.

- It works nicely having a compact midfield with the diamond 4 easily able to find each other and move forward, as at these levels the passing stats arn't great.

- The only real change I made from the original posted tactic was changing the right striker to an advanced forward. I found that it was better for me to shake things up slightly going forward and whoever was my AF each season ended up being top scorer.

Some of my key players along the way (all signed for free either from club or contract expiry):

- Ryan Astley (DC) (Sold for 130k but top defender for this level)

- Zac Bell (DC) Top defender that replaced Astley nicely

- Riley Harbottle (DC) Didn't think he would be that great but he actually surprised me.

- Richard Chin (WBR/L) Stats don't look great but he's quick and can play both sides. (Sold for 95k)

- George Gitau (WBR) About as good as you can get for a WB at this level

- Greg Olley (CM) Awesome set piece taker (scored and set up a ton) and captain right through all 3 seasons. Stand out player in this career so far.

- James Balagizi (CM) Key addition for the league 2 season

- Ewan Clarke (AMC) Assist machine, faded off in league 2

- Kasey Palmer (AMC) Top signing in my league 2 season

- Josh Thomas (ST) Destroyer up until national league but starting to struggle with 15 goals in league 2

- Joe Hardy (ST) signed from Accrington on a free transfer whilst in national league south. Good goalscoring record and doesn't ask too much in wages. Has probably been my standout player over the 3 seasons along with Greg Olley.

I'll probably decide to move to a different tactic for League one next season as the standard of players jumps up quite alot but this has been great for getting me there.

Thank you to the original poster for making the journey enjoyable!
